The club is an example of sporting consistency. There has been heavy investment since the arrival of M6. Improvements of facilities, the development of its commercial services, new accomodations for our partners and a training policy have helped to establish the Club’s position in the French football. A WORD FROM THE CHAIRMAN Chairman, has it sunk in that you’ve brought the title to Bordeaux? Yes, it feels real now. We’re absolutely thrilled with this sixth French Championship title. We were worried that we might be disappointed, but we got there in the end (laughter). We played each match as it came. It wasn’t all easy and we had a few problems that knocked us out of our stride, such as the thrashings that we were given by Chelsea and Toulouse. But there were also a few pointers that suggested we could do it: Grenoble, when we played nine against eleven, Monaco, when we were 3-0 down at half-time and came back to win, and Rennes, where we won in the last few minutes, playing ten against eleven. There was also our win against Lyon, in Bordeaux. Is it a reward for a club that now has a structure? The club hasn’t changed overnight. We need to keep going along the same path, with the same commitment that some people have criticized as being “unadventurous”, but which I think is responsible and intelligent. It’s very easy to get carried away when you’re running a football club, and we know where that can lead. If you want to build over the long term, you have to combine reason and passion. I think we do that pretty well in Bordeaux! What about your targets for next season? Good question. Personally, I have three aims: to try and come through the Champions League qualification rounds, but that depends on the draw; to qualify directly for the Champions League via the championship, and to try to do something in the French Cup. Has M6’s long-term investment paid off? M6 has always supported us, in the bad times and in the good. We’ve always been able to rely on them. We’ve got the best record over the last ten years, after Lyon. Since I’ve been Chairman, we’ve only missed out on the European Cup for two seasons and we’ve played more European matches than any other French club. Despite a rather disastrous start and some early defeats, the Bordeaux team set to work and achieved its first creditable results in the 1931/32 season. 17 October 1936: the Club became Les Girondins de Bordeaux FC. 1937 TO THE 1980s 8 June 1937, from amateur to professional: the Club played its first professional match in Toulouse on 22 August 1937 [3-2]. It then began to make a name for itself in French football following its French Cup victory in 1941. At the time, France was divided into three parts (occupied zone, free zone and prohibited zone]. The Bordeaux team won three finals against Red-Star [3-1], Toulouse [3-1] and Fives [2-0]. 1950, the first French Championship title: This first championship title was won with a lead of six points over Lille, with Bordeaux catching up on a 12-point lead in 17 matches without a defeat! 1980 TO 1995 1984/1989, years of glory: After a rather difficult period between 1972 and 1979, the Girondins dominated French football during the 1980s. • 3 Championship titles in 1984, 1985 and 1987 • 2 French Cup victories against Marseille in 1986 and 1987 • Took part in the European Cups several times between 1982 and 1989, with two semi-finals. 1992, from anonymity to the elite: having been relegated for a season for financial reasons, the Club was promoted back to Division 1 in 1991/92, winning the Division 2 Championship. Two years later, FC Girondins de Bordeaux was back in Europe. 1995 TO THE PRESENT DAY 1996, the European adventure, from the Intertoto to the final: the great European adventure was orchestrated by the magical trio of Zidane, Dugarry and Lizarazu. That year, the Club played 20 matches in Europe, including the incredible elimination of AC Milan in the quarter final [0-2/3-0], after a match that will remain forever in the memory. FC Girondins de Bordeaux lost to Bayern de Munich [0-2/1-3] in the UEFA Cup final. This was the season that saw the arrival of Jean-Louis Triaud, previously a board member, as Chairman of the club, in partnership with Jean-Didier Lange for 4 years. 1999, the fifth Championship title and the arrival of M6: Having won the French Championship title on the final day after a hand-to-hand battle with Olympique de Marseille, FC Girondins de Bordeaux chose the M6 Group to provide the human and financial resources it needed to maintain its status and pursue its development. The year 2000 onwards: staying at the highest level and achieving European status: after a 1999/2000 season in which the Club discovered the Champions League, the two following seasons were a period of consolidation. In 2000-2001, Bordeaux achieved its fifth successive European qualification via the Championship. The following season saw the Girondins win the League Cup against Lorient [3-0]. Then came the 2003-2004 season, with a superb run in the UEFA Cup, ending in defeat in the 1/4 final against Valencia, who went on to win the competition. 2007/2008 - Bordeaux among the elite. By following a policy of stability and investment, the shareholders and directors, the team and all the other employees kept the Club at the highest level and Les Girondins de Bordeaux won the League Cup against Olympique Lyonnais. They went on to qualify for the UEFA competition once again in 2007 and the Champions League in 2008, following another title as vice-champion of France. 2008/2009 – The 6th Championship title, a League Cup and a Champions’ Trophy The Girondins had a superb season to commemorate the 10th anniversary of M6’ arrival, winning 3 trophies. The season began with a Champions’ Trophy win against Lyon (0-0, 4-3 on pens.). On 25 April 2009, the Navy and Whites won their 3rd League Cup with a win against Vannes (4-0). Finally, Bordeaux rounded off the 2008-2009 season in style! After a breathtaking chase to the finish with Marseille, the Club won its 6th French Championship title on the last day. It is the administrative headquarters of FC Girondins de Bordeaux. The FC Girondins de Bordeaux International Centre consists of 9 football pitches, 2 of which are synthetic, 1 woodland running trail 3 kilometres long, the professional centre, the training centre, the soccer school, the Girondins TV studios and, of course, the Château du Haillan, in an area covering a total of 11 hectares. A BIT OF HISTORY During the Hundred Years’ War, the estate known at the time as “Lanneblanque” was the scene of a great deal of fighting between the English and the French. The estate changed hands several times up to the 19th Century and in 1845 the new owner of Lanneblanque, Mr. Francisco Antonio de Los Heros, changed its name to Château de Bel Air. On 23 August 1944, all the wood on the property was torn to shreds by the explosion of the German munitions stored on the estate. The property was looted when the Germans left. In 1963, faced with the difficulty in finding agricultural workers, it became impossible to run the estate and the city council bought a large part of it to provide various services: large sports fields, a horticultural college, a greenhouse for the Bordeaux parks, etc. The council thus became the last and current owner of the Château de Bel Air. In 1986, in the Bez era, the City Council adopted a plan to set up an International football centre. FC Girondins de Bordeaux became the project manager and left the Rocquevielle estate in Mérignac. Today, the château’s facilities offer a delightful venue for partners, administrators and guests. The professional centre, the many grass pitches and the training centre also make the estate an outstanding home for a football club. They are in a magnificent setting, surrounded by ten football pitches, and are totally adapted for training high-level professional players. At the heart of a centre totally dedicated to football The Pro centre is on the Plaine du Haillan, surrounded by the first-team training pitches, with direct access to the synthetic pitch on one side and to the grass pitch on the other. This well-lit, glass-fronted building helps the Pros to integrate into their environment. The complex is organised in such a way as to allow the public to attend training and stand close to the pitches, and provides the press with the contacts that it needs. The presence of administrative and commercial staff and the teams attached to the Club, and its proximity to the Training Centre, all help to maintain the “Club Spirit” that the Girondins are keen to uphold. Designed for the well-being of its users The centre is designed to operate in a way that has been carefully assessed with its users. The dressing room is built in a half-moon shape and is in the centre of the building to encourage players to chat together and have contact along the bench. Movements are carefully studied to make the work of the building supervisors easier and to fit in best with the ways in which the premises are used. Finally, the centre is divided into a number of sectors: a treatment and muscle-building sector, a coaches’ sector and a video sector. Treatment and muscle-building The treatment and muscle-building sector is designed in 3 parts. It contains a large muscle-building room with direct access to the pitches and 30 latest generations machines for physical exercices. The second room is totally dedicated to stretching exercises, while the third is used for physiotherapy treatments. The rooms are inter-communicating, have large glass frontages and are equipped with a video circuit for showing football images. Everything has been designed for the players’ well-being to ensure that they are given the best possible treatment and preparation. Video This is an essential part of match preparation and the Club has the very latest equipment. The video sector consists of: • a fully equipped video projection room, • a complete digital video control room. Video is now an essential part of match preparation: viewing moments chosen from the past matches of the team and its opponents in the next match, presenting tactical diagrams, etc… The Professional Centre in figures • Surface area: 850 m2 of living space. • Dedicated pitches: direct access to 1 synthetic pitch and 1 natural pitch. • Dressing room sector: 1 dressing room / 30 lockers. • Balneotherapy sector: showers, affusion showers, underwater jet pool, iced water pool, 1 sauna, 1 steam room • Treatment and muscle-building sector: 1 stretching room, 1 physiotherapy room equipped with 5 tables and a biodex, 1 muscle-building room. • Video sector: 1 fully-equipped 30-seater room, 1 integrated control room with digital bench. Every year, it welcomes youngsters aged 14 to 18. The policy has borne fruit, leading to the discovery and training of talented players, and many professional players have emerged from the Training Centre, including Lizarazu, Dugarry, Mavuba, Afanou, Planus, Francia, Chamakh, Cid, Chalmé, Obertan, Marange, Ducasse, Feindouno, Grenet, Roche, etc. The Centre The FC Girondins de Bordeaux training centre is at the heart of the outstanding Plaine du Haillan site, which is the Club’s headquarters. Young trainees are therefore in contact with the professional team. The buildings cover 1600 m2, and contain 3 classrooms, a relaxation room, doctor’s surgery and treatment centre. The supervisory staff work under a director and include 12 teachers, 10 qualified coaches and instructors and a physiotherapist. There is also a person responsible for spotting and recruiting trainees. A programme adapted to each age level Soccer school: age 7 to 12. Children’s soccer school takes place on Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays. The aim is to have fun and let off steam to encourage the children to develop their talent. Pre-training: age 13 to 15. Pre-training is a symbol of the famous French-style training in which schooling and sport work hand in hand. The hours are adapted, but not the educational curriculum. The children are monitored psychologically and medically. Pre-training allows children to grow up within the cocoon of the Haillan complex. Training: age 16 to 18. The aim is to allow everyone to move forward at his own pace and achieve his maximum potential. Post-training: French Amateur Championship [CFA]. Individualised work Individual monitoring is essential in getting the best out of each trainee. Physiological and technical tests are carried out regularly so that everyone’s athletic preparation can be individually planned and their technique refined. Players are given individual work sessions depending on the results. The sports training director regularly discusses each player’s progress with the first team coach with a view to bringing him into the professional squad as soon as possible. Academic education Youngsters at the training centre are obliged to follow a normal course of schooling. This will bring them the balance they need for their well-being, as well as security for the future. Youngsters are therefore in contact with the outside world. An integrated education To reinforce the educational system offered to these young players and to offer them greater ease in everyday life, the Club has set up the FC Girondins de Bordeaux Private Technical School, which works with the Institut Péret for the general Baccalaureate and the Institut Bernom for the BTS vocational certificates, the vocational Baccalaureate and the school-leaver’s certificates. By offering a full range of educational opportunities, FC Girondins de Bordeaux can thus keep a close eye on the development of each of its young players and provide them with the most appropriate, flexible, individual solutions.
