CityScape and its partners have been involved in changing the look and feel of downtown Youngstown, from corridor improvement projects, new playgrounds and urban landscaping undertakings to organizing downtown tours and the installation of new historic markers on Central Square. This Annual Report provides a picture of the number and scope of our projects and partnerships in 2015. CityScape?s numerous successful projects and partnerships are meaningful and crucial to the fulfillment of this organization?s mission, and help this organization serve as a catalyst for the growth of other ventures downtown, strengthening our urban core, the corridors, gateways and neighborhoods of the city. Sincerely, We also believe that our projects and annual work form the bedrock for much of the other economic and community growth and development that continue to take place in Youngstown?s center city. This year, CityScape members and leadership have seen the fruits of working together with our partners on Sharon Letson Pete Asimakopulos Executive Director Board President PROJECTS Youngst own St reet scape 2015 Streetscape is our major annual project. The process begins with a campaign kickoff in March at the D.D. Davis Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens. On Streetscape day, hundreds of volunteers plant and mulch downtown garden beds and bunkers, install annuals in the 400 sidewalk pots, clear litter and debris, trim bushes and hedges, landscape bridges and spruce up Wick Park. All volunteers are treated to lunch in Central Square compliments of downtown restaurant donations. The event began eighteen years ago with a dozen volunteers in Federal Plaza has continued to grow each year since. Over 670 volunteers participated in 2015. Wick Park Improvement Project Since 2008, CityScape and its project partners have raised over $371,000 for improvements to Wick Park. Those improvements include new corner landscaping, ?welcome? signage, security gates, sidewalk repair, and additional and accessible parking adjacent to the pavilion. In 2014, CityScape received funding from the Youngstown Foundation Hine Memorial Fund, and in 2015 joined with the City of Youngstown and Wee Can Move Too to install a new, all-inclusive playground using elements of universal design. The playground became the focal point for the City?s Summer Day Camp Program in Wick Park. In the fall, CityScape partnered with Youngstown Rotary for installation of a Little Free Library and also held a fundraiser at the pavilion titled 'Wedding Soup In Wick Park'. PROJECTS 2015 Youngst own Cit yScape Grass Root s Gal a Since 2010, CityScape has recognized an individual or organization who has made a significant commitment to CityScape?s mission of revitalizing downtown Youngstown and its gateways through beautification, education and preservation. The Grass Roots Gala is CityScape?s formal recognition ceremony and it is held in February at the Davis Center in Mill Creek MetroParks. This year, CityScape recognized CityScape Board President Pete Asimakopoulos. Proceeds from the event benefit the Youngstown CityScape Endowment Fund, a component fund of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley. Wick Ave Improvement Project CityScape is the lead partner along with the City of Youngstown and Youngstown State University on this key infrastructure upgrade. CityScape received funding to cover the initial $63,000 of engineering costs for the utility line burial portion of the project through a grant from the Andrews Foundation. When completed, the project will upgrade the aesthetics along Youngstown?s ?Cultural Corridor?by burying the power cables that block the sight lines of several significant structures. This project dovetails with additional federally-funded infrastructure upgrades along Wick Avenue which will include road resurfacing, re-designing traffic and pedestrian lighting, and increasing the amount of green space throughout the corridor. PROJECTS Cent ral Square Hist oric Markers Four new markers providing historical and architectural information about Youngstown?s Central Square and its cornerstone buildings and monuments were unveiled in June. The four doubled-sided markers recognize; the Civil War Soldiers?Monument; Central Tower; the Stambaugh Building; the Mahoning National Bank Building; the Union Building; the Realty Building; and Central Square from 1798 ? 1899 and 1900 ? 2004. Project partners included the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and the Ohio History Connection. 9t h Annual Beaut if icat ion Awards Each year, CityScape recognizes individuals, businesses and organizations throughout Youngstown demonstrating exceptional dedication to beautification of their home or business. Those selected are recognized at a fall ceremony at the D.D. Davis Center in Mill Creek MetroParks. Those selected are nominated by community members or CityScape staff. This year, awards were given to 15 recipients in three categories which included Corporate/ Business, Institution and Individual. PROJECTS 5t h Annual Gol f Out ing Fundraiser In August, CityScape held its 5th Annual ?Swing, Scramble & Shake?golf outing at Henry Stambaugh Golf Course on the city?s North Side. The golf course was opened in 1923 and remains a part of the City of Youngstown's Parks & Recreation Department. Numerous individuals, businesses and organizations sponsor various aspects of the event and attendance this year was the best yet. Proceeds from the event benefited the ?Sparkle Youngstown?holiday lighting display in Central Square. Sparkl e Youngst own Campaign CityScape assists with the organization of Youngstown's annual holiday parade and also spearheads the downtown holiday lighting campaign in Central Square titled ?Sparkle Youngstown?. The display offers a warm welcome to visitors with over 50,000 individual lights during Youngstown?s frosty winter months. Between online donations, checks by mail and institutional support, CityScape met its campaign goal of $10,000. PROJECTS Downt own Wal king Tours This year, CityScape began offering two-hour walking tours of downtown Youngstown. The tours included an overview of the history of downtown as well as current and future projects, plans and events. Several hundred individuals participated in the first year of this new program. In 2016, CityScape seeks to raise funds for self-guided walking tours. The tours will feature display stands which will include photos and narratives of notable landmarks as well as QR codes for an additional multimedia experience via your smart phone. Youngst own Nat ion Gif t Shop CityScape maintains an exclusive partnership with the Youngstown Nation Gift Shop & Information Center. The store serves as an outlet for CityScape program, event and volunteer information and assists with direct fundraising. This year, CityScape assembled the first-ever Youngstown Discount Card which offers a variety of discounts to downtown shoppers all while promoting downtown businesses and organizations. 2015 DONORS THANKS TO THE INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES WHOSE GENEROSITY MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE.
