Hartman II, Namtrah Tibetan Spaniels Four Tibbie puppies—John, Paul, George and Ringo—get their “15 minutes of fame” on Animal Planet’s cutest show! An Email and a Phone Call It all started with what looked like a form email that began with: “Hi Harold and Mary! My name is Quinn Fegan and I’m a casting director at Animal Planet/True Entertainment. I wanted to reach out to you as we’re gearing up for our next season of Too Cute and we’d love to feature Tibetan Spaniels.” I am sure that other Tibbie breeders received the same email. I thought at first it was junk mail, but recognized the phone number as a New York City number and called it. A woman on the phone said Animal Planet was looking for litters born between March and June. Our Coco had just given birth to four boys on March 9. When she asked me if I knew of a litter that might be available, I told her I was looking at four boys that were just a week and a half old. To my surprise, she asked if a film crew could come over on Saturday to do the first shoot. This was Thursday evening—talk about moving quickly! To get the final approval from Animal Planet she said I needed to send her pictures of the puppies, of their mom Coco and dad, Weasley, the room they lived in, the outside of the house and the dog run. I sent the photos to her and waited to hear back. By late Friday evening we got the word that they would arrive around noon on Saturday with their camera crew. Photo Shoots It ended up being a total of six shoots over five different visits from March 23 to June 9. They shot the puppies at barely 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 10 weeks and finally at 13 weeks for the “adoption day” shoot. The last shoot was also the ‘super slow motion’ filming. In total they must have shot about 12 hours of video. All of this was somehow going to be cut down to just a 16–18-minute segment of the Too Cute TV show. For that first surprise visit they said they would be at the house for four hours. I could not imagine what they would be filming for four hours since the squirming babies were so young—their eyes were just opening and they weren’t exactly active. Fur Bunnies & Toenails Around noon on Saturday, in came four people with lights, camera and the sound boom. We learned right away that the floor had to be absolutely spotless and dust free— as all of us Tibbie owners know, that was a huge challenge. They explained the camera was high definition and picks up everything. Good thing the floor had been mopped just hours prior to the crew’s arrival—still, the producer was on her hands and knees checking for fur bunnies! With puppies just two weeks old, the first shoot was about nursing and sleeping, with a little squirming. Mary had to trim puppy toenails because they were getting caught in the blanket the producer, Michelle, brought for the filming. They even shot the nail trimming and it ended up as the introduction to the four Tibbie boys: John, Paul George and Ringo. Tibbie Zoomies... On the second shoot at 4 weeks old, the puppies were up and about and starting to show their personalities. The crew got some great “Tibbie chase” footage, and the boys played hide and seek under the bachelor’s chest. Mary and I were sure some of that video would make the final cut—but it didn’t, because of what happened on the fourth shoot. What did make the cut was when daddy Weasley was introduced and Coco barked to warn him off. From this shoot onward, we could see that Michelle’s favorite was the little red boy, Ringo. First Steps...Steps...Steps...Steps... The third shoot at 8 weeks was both inside and outside. Now that the boys had their first shot we allowed them to venture outside onto the deck. Weasley also got his chance to play with the puppies as Coco apparently thought it was now okay for the boys to interact with their dad. We were asked to “save” certain events so that they could be shot for the first time with the Too Cute cameras. One of those events was their first steps outside onto the back deck. Over and over again, the four pups were placed back inside so that the camera could capture their “first steps” outside—following Coco, following Weasley, and all by themselves. Continued on next page Animal Planet’s Too Cute Continued from previous page up from his position and zoomed in on the big 4-foot-long black snake crossing the lane in front of the Tibbies. Michelle was shouting directions from a safe distance of at least 20 feet away. To this day I do not know how Mary summoned the courage to remain calm in the face of the dreaded Big Black SNAKE! Two Shoots in One: Slo Mo The fifth and final filming session at 13 weeks was actually two shoots in one. A whole new An Animal Planet camera crew filmed a litter of Tibbie puppies for several weeks to crew came to shoot the Tibbies create a segment on the popular TV show, with the ‘ultra slow motion’ Too Cute. Capturing the moment, Ringo on the back of their couch, Freddie the photographer jumped in classic ‘watch dog’ mode. The George shots were going to be a challenge. In the filming, George was led away by our grandson, Marcus. But Marcus was home in Columbus and George was still with us, waiting for a new home. Mary frantically tried to find a boy who resembled Marcus to pretend he was the new owner. She also tried to “fake it” by taking some photos of George with friends of ours from church. However, in the end, the writers decided to use a photo of Ringo in bed with Lucas—and just call him George! All in all it was an interesting adventure. The grandkids loved seeing themselves on TV. Lucas is very proud that his boy Ringo was the star of the show. All four boys are now in their forever homes. Hopefully those who watched the show got a better understanding of the breed we all love. After all, Tibbie puppies ARE Too Cute! Ringo became producer Michelle’s favorite—and the ‘star’ of the show— early on. Here he eagerly tries to get “up close and personal” with a snake. The new registry was implemented at the request of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) and is the ACVO's endorsed eye registry. One of the ACVO's primary goals of the transition from CERF to the OFA was the timely production and dissemination of statistical data regarding ocular disease and prevalence in purebred dogs. Under CERF, the last edition of the "Blue Book" - the publication summarizing eye examination results - was the Fifth Edition released in 2010 with data through 2009. In addition to the regular processing of eye clearances, the OFA has assumed responsibility for the maintenance of the ACVO's statistics and the production of the Blue Book. Working closely with the Genetics Committee of the ACVO, the OFA is pleased to have completed the Sixth Edition - 2013 Ocular Disorders Assumed to be Inherited in Purebred Dogs, with data compiled through 2012. The OFA is committed to producing annual updates, and to providing this information back to the parent clubs at no charge. A full copy of the publication is available on request. As your parent club's OFA/CHIC Liaison, you are being provided with the publication's pages specific to your breed. Entropion A conformational defect resulting in an "in rolling" of one or more of the eyelids which may cause ocular irritation. It is likely that entropion is influenced by several genes (polygenic), defining the skin and other structures which make up the eyelids, the amount and weight of the skin covering the head and face, the orbital contents, and the conformation of the skull. B. Distichiasis Eyelashes abnormally located on the eyelid margin which may cause ocular irritation. Distichiasis may occur at any time. It is difficult to make a strong recommendation with regards to breeding dogs with this entity. The hereditary basis has not been established although it seems probable due to the high incidence in some breeds. Reducing the incidence is a logical goal. When diagnosed, distichiasis should be recorded and breeding discretion is advised. ©2013, American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists 12 TIBETAN SPANIEL - 2 C. Chronic superficial keratitis / Pannus A bilateral disease of the cornea which usually starts as a grayish haze to the ventral or ventrolateral cornea, followed by the formation of a vascularized subepithelial growth that begins to spread toward the central cornea; pigmentation follows the vascularization. If severe, vision impairment occurs. Pannus may be associated with plasma cell infiltration of the nictitans. D. Persistent pupillary membranes (PPM) Persistent blood vessel remnants in the anterior chamber of the eye which fail to regress normally in the neonatal period. These strands may bridge from iris to iris, iris to cornea, iris to lens, or from sheets of tissue in the anterior chamber. The last three forms pose the greatest threat to vision and when severe, vision impairment or blindness may occur. E. Cataract A partial or complete opacity of the lens and/or its capsule. In cases where cataracts are complete and affect both eyes, blindness results. The prudent approach is to assume cataracts to be hereditary except in cases known to be associated with trauma, other causes of ocular inflammation, specific metabolic diseases, persistent pupillary membrane, persistent hyaloid or nutritional deficiencies. Cataracts may involve the lens completely (diffuse) or in a localized region. F. Retinal atrophy - generalized A degenerative disease of the retinal visual cells which progresses to blindness. This abnormality, also known as progressive retinal atrophy or PRA, may be detected by electroretinogram (not part of a routine eye screening examination) before it is apparent clinically. Except for X-linked PRA in the Siberian Husky, in all breeds studied to date, PRA is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. G. Ceroid Lipofuscinosis An inherited disease of man and animal characterized by the accumulation of lipopigment in various tissues of the body including the eye. It results in progressive neurologic disease including blindness. (Also called Batten’s disease). References 1. ACVO Genetics Committee, 1999 and/or Data from CERF All Breeds Report, 1991-1998. 2. Breeders: Patricia Gilliard, Pam Glave, and Karen Hand Owner/Handler: Patricia Gilliard By Carol Srnka The AKC/CHF/Purina Sponsored Parent Club Health Conference was held last August in St. Louis, MO. As usual there were a host of very highly acclaimed speakers on a myriad of very intriguing topics! I was particularly interested in the first speaker, as I had received some questions from Tibbie breeders about epilepsy in the breed. So, first up was Dr. William Thomas DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology) from the University of Tennessee on “Canine Epilepsy, Where We Are and Where We Are Going.” He explained that “seizures” are events, “epilepsy” is a disease characterized by recurring seizures. It is possible to have seizures that are not epilepsy. There are two main types of epilepsy: 1. Structural/ metabolic - which are caused by lesions on the brain or neurological disorders and 2. Idiopathic or genetic of which there are dozens of different types. In idiopathic epilepsy the dog appears perfectly normal between seizures. There are no underlying lesions or other disease processes. Often the first seizure activity is age related - starting between ages 1 - 5 years old. It is presumed to be genetic. These dogs usually have the typical generalized Tonic/Clonic type of seizure. The Tonic phase being the abnormal/involuntary twitching/ possible loss of bladder and or bowel, etc. The Clonic phase being the period immediately following the Tonic phase where the dog is no longer frenetic, but seems spent. This is usually followed by a period of disorientation. Researchers are continuing to investigate the genetic factors of the disease. Breakthroughs in this area would hopefully lead to a better understanding of the disease, how individual dogs with the disease could be better managed, as well as recommendations as to breeding of affected and related dogs and could eventually lead to a definitive diagnostic test. “Currently there is no test to confirm idiopathic epilepsy and the diagnosis is based on clinical features and exclusion of other causes of seizures. There is no cure and treatment most commonly entails daily administration of phenobarbital or bromide.” These treatments have mixed results. Researchers are also continuing to work on other types of drugs, both human and some specifically designed for dogs, as well as additional options to drug treatment. Little Known Facts About Carol Srnka... I have always had a dog for as long as I can remember but got my first “purebred” dog when I was 13, a Miniature Poodle. My husband, Chuck, and I started raising dogs in 1969. We first had English Setters and then Gordons, for hunt and show, under the “High Brass” kennel name. In 1982, I decided that I wanted a small, low maintenance breed (read that, a dog that did not require a lot of grooming for the show ring!!) I looked at Tibbies, Cavaliers and Schips. Tibbies and Cavaliers were not yet AKC recognized so I got my first Schip who lived to be almost 17 years old! Hence began the “Belgae” prefix, for my little black barge dogs from Belgium. In 1990 I got my first Tibetan Spaniel, a little red and white parti bitch. Her name was Margee’s Amni Machen O’Belgae (MaiTai). MaiTai produced two champion daughters who went on to produce two generations of agility titled Tibbies. MaiTai was a very special little dog, with some very human-like characteristics. She was very young when she was diagnosed with a severe pure red cell Aplastic Anemia, she was gone in 6 weeks. So began my extreme interest in Tibbie Health. 15 Epilepsy AKC/CHF/Purina Sponsored Parent Club Health Conference Part 1 - Epilepsy September Titles Dog Title Dog Name Champion CH Aki Shima Lets Have Many owners may find out that their dog has become infected with Lyme disease at a routine appointment as many frequently used heartworm tests also include testing for tick borne diseases. If this is the case and the dog is not showing any clinical signs of illness, it will be up to you and your veterinarian if you choose to pursue additional testing and treatment or take a “wait and see” approach. Basics of Lyme Disease Angelic Vetter, DVM Almost everyone knows something about Lyme disease, but often what you think you know may be only the beginning. Hopefully, this brief article will help to provide some basic information about the canine Lyme disease infections. Transmission and Prevalence Treatment Lyme disease is a spirochete bacteria scientifically known as Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted by the deer tick, Ixodes scapularis. The deer tick has an extended life cycle, about two years long. An egg develops from a nymph to larva and then adult. The nymph, larva, and adult each require a different host and at each of these stages the tick can become infected or transmit the disease while feeding. Lyme disease has been diagnosed in all states; however certain areas have a much higher rate of infection. Although most people associate Lyme disease with the New England states, other areas such as the northern coast of California are considered a moderate risk area. The Lyme spirochete is very good at evading both the immune system and antibiotic therapies. It is able to “hide” in different body tissues and change its configuration so that it cannot be detected. Therapy is aimed at reaching a latent state where the organism is not causing any illness or discomfort to the dog. In the past, the treatment for Lyme disease was a 28 day course of doxycycline. This antibiotic is effective and reasonably inexpensive. However, due to its decreasing use in human medicine, doxycycline has become difficult to obtain. Another antibiotic known as Minocycline is equally effective although generally more expensive. The cost will vary greatly based on the size of the infected dog Symptoms of Lyme Disease in Dogs Prevention Most people associate Lyme infection with a characteristic “bulls eye” rash. However, this is uncommonly seen in dogs due to their dense hair coat. Many dogs that contract Lyme disease are taken to the veterinarian for intermittent shifting leg lameness. The dog may seem to limp on one leg, get better, but then begin limping on another leg. Often times on a physical exam the dog may have swollen joints and a fever. Dogs may be infected for several months and possibly over a year before they show clinical signs. In fact, it is estimated that over 90% of dogs that become infected will never become sick as their immune system will be able to limit the infection. In rare cases while trying to eliminate the infection, the dog’s immune system will deposit immune complexes in the kidney and cause severe and irreversible kidney damage that is often fatal. It is very important to note that in order to transmit Lyme disease, as well as many other tick borne diseases, the infected tick must be attached and feeding on the host for a minimum of 48 hours. This means that utilizing an effective tick control product and monitoring your dog for ticks is the most effective means of disease prevention. There are many different vaccines available to protect against Lyme disease. There are arguments both for and against vaccination which are outside the scope of this article. This is a discussion best had with your veterinarian as they will understand the prevalence of the disease within your area. . ABOUT THE AUTHOR Angelic Vetter, DVM is a 2006 graduate of Iowa State University. All Creature Small Animal Hospital Indianola, IA • 515-961-7882 Diagnosis Many times the first test that a veterinarian will do if they are suspicious of Lyme disease is an in-house test that tests for several tick diseases, as many have similar clinical symptoms. This test will be positive if the dog has antibodies for the Lyme spirochete, meaning that the dog has been infected and the body’s immune system has developed a response. It is important to note that due to vaccine modifications a vaccinated dog will NOT test positive if it has not been naturally infected. When a dog has a positive test result, most veterinarians will want to do more extensive 20 New Champion Flolin Cynara Chasin’ Glory Owner/Breeder: Linda Foiles - Flolin Co-Breeder: Mary Novocin - Cynara D May the luck of the Irish be with you! “Emma” • Winners Bitch • Best of Winners • Best of Opposite Sex “Paddy” • Winners Dog First weekend out! That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. ~William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet I had my first litter of Tibbies and could not think of a kennel name. I had Norwegian Elkhounds originally and bred two litters of them. Thinking I was going to stay in the Elkhounds, I didn't want a Tibetan name for my prefix. Driving back from a match with Freeda Manley, who showed Tibbies with me, we passed through Amherst county, which had a shopping center called Ambriar, for Amherst country and Sweet Briar College, which was close to where I lived at that time. It hit me it could be used for my kennel name, so I changed the A to an E and it became Ambrier Tibetan Spaniels. My first litter was from TSCA Ch. Truk Ku She May Mo, “Natasha” and the sire was Sherwood's Ku Omar, "Ram". One of these puppies from this litter registration pictured below was Ambrier's Tiger Lily, who was sold to Tom and Flo Whiting. She is behind so many Tibbies since she was the American side of the foundation to Bims Tibetan Spaniels. -Mallory Cosby Driskill My kennel name, Butternut Hill, is the name of the hill that I lived on in my childhood in Upstate N.Y. It was and unbelievably remains , an idyllic place. I kept two pups from my first litter. My favorite is Butternut Hill Tim the Enchanter, CGC THD (pictured). -Colleen Faini I chose my kennel name from a poem by Ernest Christopher Dowson titled “Cynara,” written in the 1800’s. It is most noted for the line “gone with the wind,” where Margaret Mitchell found the title for her famous book. I started using the prefix with my Collies and contiuned using it with my Tibbies. My first bred-by Tibbie was Ch. Cynara High Time, “Austin” (pictured). His dam is Ch. Santera High Society, which I co-owned with Sandy Novocin, and his sire is Ch. Santera Tri Jed Di. -Mary Novocin ” Dreamcast was chosen because our son, Mike, had a horse named Dreamer. His first show dog was Tresaith's Dollymixture Dream. When his first showdog also had Dream in her name, it seemed logical to take that as a theme. Dolly's sire was Woodhenge Dreamcaster, so from that we took Dreamcast. Our first Tibbie to have our prefix is GCH Dreamcast Soul Survivor (pictured). -Janet Habiger Flolin is a combination of our first names Floyd and Linda. My first Tibbie that had Flolin registered was my group placing Ch. Flolin's Xiao Siang Thai (pictured), whelped August 16, 1981 out of Am/ Bda/Can Ch. Fairstar Cho-Sun X Ch.Phylmarko Par-Ti-Fait Flolin owned by Linda Foiles & Jo Downing. -Linda Foiles In the 1970's John and I were showing Samoyeds & a few years later we added PW Corgis. In 1984, when Samantha was seven years old she asked for a dog of her own that she could show. She did a good job of handling the Corgis but was just too small to pick those 25 pounds Corgis up and put them on the table so someone always had to be standing ringside to put the Corgi on the table for her to stack & the judges always put the Corgi down on the floor for her. So.... about a year later we brought home out first Tibetan Spaniel from Dick & Carol Jeffery, Jemari's Emperor. Sam showed Empi to his championship & then we got a bitch from the Jeffery's. That was the beginning of the Hysam Tibbies. We had a different kennel name for the Sammies & Corgis but Samantha wanted her own name. It was a very simple decision. Whenever Sam would show up ringside the other exhibitors would always greet her with “Hi, Sam!” So, a simple change of the spelling and we had a custom, short, five letter kennel name just for her. By early 1990 Samantha was the youngest breeder, owner, handler of champion Tibbies in the U.S. Sam's grown now and living in Baltimore in her own home with her two cats. So, in 1984 what started out as just one Tibbie for a little girl, turned into a love for the breed, and almost 30 years later we still have Tibbies. The perfect breed that in the beginning we knew very little about. -Susan, & John, & Samantha Mullins The Iceywinds Kennel name came from being involved with both Bernese Mountain Dogs and Tibetan Spaniels, which were dogs who had a cold weather connection, thus the “icey” part of the name. The "winds" part of the name comes from my nickname "Wendy" which was part of my middle name of Winslow. So, I put the two together to form “Iceywinds.” My first Tibbie to carry my kennel name was AKC Ch. Iceywinds Jen Kum Ra V Bev’s (pictured) back in 1985. His sire was Tashi Ali Kum Ra and his dam was Phylmarko Autumn Joy Of Briel. He was bred by Beverly Burney of Bev's Kennel. -Sarah Baker Our first Tibbie was Ian his registered name is Ambrier's Radiant Scion of Zeke. We went off the idea of scion, a sun or star. Both of our middle names are Rae and both our fathers were name Ray. Ketu means shooting star in Tibetan. So the kennel name became Keturay; rays of a shooting star. Pictured is Keturay’s I’ve Got A Right (Susan B) from our first litter. -Shelly Potter & Shannon O’Neal When I purchased my first Tibbie, I wanted a different kennel name. I started thinking of combining forms of my name with my husband's. The first one I thought of was Flolin which was Floyd and Linda. But I'm glad I did not decide on that since Linda Foiles was already using it for the same combination of names! Then I came up with Lin Chi which is the first three letters of Linda and my husband's nickname Chip. The picture is my first boy as a puppy...Sir Adams Porthos of Lin Chi -Linda Hendrix I was watching an episode of CSI:NY. The guy who lived next door to the "victim" was a Mandala artist. So it came out as the story progressed that Mandalas were Tibetan art. Each piece beautiful, individual and unique. Just like Tibbies. and BOOM! I thought, that's my kennel name. - Moira Sullivan “ ” Words have meaning and names have power. — Author Unknown We first heard about Tibetan Spaniels in 1997 when, at a family reunion, our sister-in-law, Melanie Hartman, began talking about searching for a Tibbie. At that time, I thought it sounded like an interesting breed. It wasn’t until we met Bingo, Melanie’s first Tibbie, that we fell in love. We began searching for our own Tibetan Spaniel. Melanie intended to show Bingo in conformation, and being active in dog shows was on my bucket list. It was the perfect time to start this adventure. Our three children were older and we both had the time to become involved. We purchased our first Tibbie from Mallory Driskill, Ambrier’s Force Is With Yoda. Yoda was not destined for the show ring. Even though we would not have traded Yoda for the world, I was still looking for a show dog and the ability to join Melanie in the show ring. Melanie and I went to Wine Country Circuit shows in September, 1998. I came home with Owen (Dragonhold Party of Five), and Melanie came home with two girls from Cheryl Kelly. That was the beginning of Melmar. Melmar was the combination of Melanie and Mary. The first Melmar champion that we bred was Ch. Melmar Harry Potter (pictured above). He was out of Owen and Jewel (Lorac Ambrier Crown Jewel). There were a total thirteen Melmar champions over the next several years. As time went on, Melanie’s two young daughters were growing and it became more difficult for Melanie to continue showing the dogs. In 2002, Harold and I decided to go on our own and start fresh with our own prefix. There were several names that we were tossing back and forth. We wanted something short and easy to remember. One evening we were discussing a new kennel name while cooking dinner. Our son was there listening as Harold and I went back and forth with names we had been considering. Dave looked at us and said “What about Namtrah?” We said “NAMTRAH?” He said “Yeah, that is HARTMAN spelled backwards.” It was an a-hah moment. Thus the prefix Namtrah was born. Our first Namtrah champion was, Ch Namtrah Fenlea Rising Son. -Mary & Harold Hartman II I originally chose my kennel name “Sierra”when living in Sacramento and owning and showing Shelties. I wanted a short , alliterative name and since we had a nice view of the Sierras it was pretty simple to choose. When I bought my first Tibbie I had planned to change it to something different but my husband told me I was already known by that name so I decided to keep it. My first Tibbie champion from my first litter bred is Ch. Sierra Chain Reaction (pictured). He was from a litter of five , of which 4 finished--but he was the first to finish - winning his first points on his 6 month birthday and finishing the day before he was one year old. Incidentally he was the only sable in the litter--the rest were all parti colors. -Jacki Scarborough Over 30 years ago, a couple owned a large tract of land – between 150 -200 acres. They had this idea of building a self-contained community with its own sewer and water and eventually power. The area was known way back then as Shangri-la. The neighborhood was eventually built and that is where I now live – only now it is known as Somerset Lake in Landenberg, PA. So, when trying to figure out what would be a good name, it just made sense to use the name for the area that I had grown up. – Sharon Lucernoni I grew up showing English Springer Spaniels owned by my Aunt and Uncle- Mary and Andy Carey. They had used CAREY’S for their dogs so that was not an option for me to use. When it was time for me to get my own dogs, coming up with a name was fairly easy. We were living on the edge of the Shenandoah Valley in a wooded area – hence, SHENANWOOD came to bein 1972 when I got my first English Springer Spaniel. Seven generations of English Springer Spaniels champions as well as several champion Welsh Springer Spaniels followed through 1993, when I got my first Tibetan Spaniel. Bill and I decided to continue with the name for our Tibbies. Our first homebred Tibbie champion was Ch. Shenanwood Court Jester,ROMX. “Ernie” was co-owned with and shown by our son, Will, at many shows and easily completed his championship since “Ernie” was really his dog. Almost 100 Shenanwood Tibbie champions have followed in the past twenty years, with the newest group of youngsters out now. -Colleen Bias Chaffee “ ” It all began on a beautiful July day in 1979, as we set out to find a Basset Hound for Liana’s father. Long story short, we came back with Cairo for Dad and China Mae for us. It wasn’t long before China Mae was a young lady and we decided to breed her and keep a pup to show. The rest is history, we were hooked. We placed all of China Mae’s puppies in pet homes except for our son’s favorite. We named this young male “Matt’s Apple Jack.” Matthew’s favorite cereal was Apple Jacks. The stud owner told us we should have a kennel prefix if we were going to show and breed. What a chore! We finally decided on Tamzil for our kennel prefix. We wanted to include our children in our new endeavor. Matthew was 11 and Elizabeth was 8 and at the time they were enjoying our new hobby. So...we turned Matt and Liz around and turned it into “TAMZIL”. Matthew, now has his own Tibbie -The Beast- and Elizabeth has our two wonderful grandsons, Luke and Elijah. Our first Tibetan Spaniels to use the Tamzil prefix was a litter out of our Ch. Camas Tibs Hana Shobu and sired by Lily Tamura’s Ch. Braeduke Garpon. They were Tamzil’s NankiPoo, Tamzil’s ChenRe-Zi & Tamzil’s Honah Li. Greg & Liana Craven It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to. -W.C. Field Tamzil's Honah Li & Tamzil's Nanki-Poo held by the Craven’s daughter, Elizabeth. 29 I began in 1976 with Samoyeds and chose Anadyr for it's geographical location in the arctic circle. Later I went into Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and chose Crumpet for the English tone. Then about eight years ago I went to the Tibetan Spaniels. My first was a lovely red bitch who spent her entire life up on her “tippitoes,” even in the ring, from beginning to championship she rarely had all four feet on the floor. Hence, “Tippitoes” became my kennel name and her silhouette on her tippitoes is prominently displayed on my business cards and web sight. -Linda Lashley The first Tibbie to have our kennel name was Ch. Tzuzis Jive Talking of TuQute (pictured below). Karen Hand and I had both been in other breeds, mainly Rottweilers and Akitas. Karen used the name U-Nik and I used the prefix Imarii for the Akitas. Karen got a divorce and came to live with me and John and we started looking for a smaller breed. The first Tibbie we saw at a show, we both said, at the same time, “That is too cute!” We changed the spelling and that was that. - Pam Glave “ ” The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names. -Chinese Proverb I hope everyone has enjoyed reading about how some of these prefixes came to be. If you were not included this time and would be interested in participating in a “Part 2” please let me know. If I get enough interest I’ll be happy to continue with another piece. You can reach me by email or phone, which you will find on page 2 of this issue. - Mary Novocin, TSCA Newsletter Editor How did I arrive at my kennel name? Our first dogs were Ambrier dogs and when it came time to establish our kennel and have a litter we thought long and hard about what we felt would best identify ourselves and our litter. I had spent over 20 years vacationing in Maine so I thought Acadia would be great, but seemed too close to Ambrier. Then we thought about doing a combo of both our names – nah, not great. Then I (l - r) CH Wassong’s War said why not Wassong! Admiral.(Halsey), CH Wassong’s Tibetans are an oriental Winning Colors (Smudge), Am/Can breed and it sounds oriCH Wassong’s Whirlaway, CGC ental so there it was – (Rebel) Wassong Tibetan SpanWhelped 7-14-01 iels or Wassong Tibbies as they are better known. The origin of Wassong is Alsace Lorraine – it is a small section of France and Germany, borders move constantly and it is my husband Kevin’s last name. As a postscript all Wassong Tibbies are named after race horses (the only way Kevin would let me start our kennel)! - Pat Sarles AKC Pet Disaster Relief provides a safe, healthy environment for animals during disasters. TSCA has made a donation in support of the AKC Pet Disaster Relief to help support one of the relief trailers. Our donation will help provide animal care services during the first critical hours following a disaster the time before FEMA support and services are deployed. It will also put an end to post-disaster tragedies which have historically affected pet owners, such as: putting themselves in harm’s way to save a beloved pet, or even losing a family pet during a disaster.
