Temperatures are regularly in the 70s-80s, it stays light past 8:30PM and it’s nice weather to be outside enjoying our Corvettes. I also like observing the lush green foliage on the trees, watching the grass growing thick and full in our yards and seeing the crops coming up through Iowa’s rich soil. I only wish it could stay like this year round. You’ve no doubt noticed that the local car shows, roll-ins and other automotive events have been taking place throughout Central Iowa. CCI has sponsored some events that many of you have participated in, too. We had a great event at Iowa International Raceway (Go Kart Track) in Marshalltown over the Memorial Day Weekend. It was a fun track to run on and there were lots of good people to hang out with. We had a great pizza party at Zeno’s Pizza on Saturday night, too. Thanks to all the CCI members who came out to race, work, or watch. Our next speed event is June 25-26. That’s the date for our annual low speed/high speed event at Iowa Speedway in Newton. Saturday is the low speed autocross and Sunday features the high speed event. We can always use workers and spectators, so even if competing is not your thing, please come out and support us. The new C8 Corvette was in the news, again, recently. Car and Driver posted some information on the internet including an artist’s rendering of what they anticipate the mid-engine Zora ZR1 will look like. This car is supposed to be available for 2017 at around $150,000. For more information, visit http://www.caranddriver.com/features/2017-chevrolet-corvette-zora-zr1-25-cars-worth-waiting-for-feature. Wayne Weidmann, Denny Luther and I had a nice conversation with Carl Moyer, from Karl Chevrolet, over lunch last month. We thanked him for his support of CCI and discussed some local Corvette events coming up around the area this summer. One of the events we talked about was the Corvettes at Karl 2016 event. You probably already know about this event, which will be held July 21-23. It features an open house at Karl Performance and a fishing derby on Thursday, July 21; an Iowa Speedway 4 Experience and Car Show on Friday, July 22; and Breakfast at Carl’s on Saturday, July 23. Some events are already full, but you can register by visiting www.karlchevrolet.com/corvettesatkarl. We agreed to provide judges from CCI to assist the staff from Karl’s with the car show at the Speedway following the on-track activities. Jay Hommer will be heading up the judging team. Also, don’t forget Cars and Coffee at Karl Performance is always the 2 nd Saturday of the month through October from 7-10:00AM. Are you interested in finding out about other Corvette events? Take a minute to check out the NCCC website at www.corvettesnccc.org to see what’s going on with other clubs around the country and the West Region website at www.westregionnccc.com. It’s finally Corvette weather! I’m going out and drive mine. I’ll see you soon. Until then, Save the Wave. Gary Foster Board Meeting Minutes, May 3, 2016 The May Board meeting was held at Jethro’s Lakehouse in Ankeny. President Gary Foster called the meeting to order at 7:00PM. Secretary’s report: Dave Howard recapped the April Board meeting minutes which included approval of his minutes and Ken Wilson’s treasurer’s report, Judi Nikolish’s review of social events, Denny Luther’s updated status of speed events and discussion on where to move our Memorial weekend event because of Chariton airport construction. Reports from Editor and Webmaster followed (the remaining appointed members were not present). Board meeting minutes will be published in Sportsmate. Motion to approve by Ken, seconded by Denny and passed. Treasurer’s report: Ken said the treasury was down about $1,500 in April primarily because income was low and the West Region Banquet cost was paid to Echo Valley Country Club. Ken’s full report will be posted in Members Only on the club website. Motion to approve by Judi, seconded by Denny and passed. President’s report: Gary had nothing to report. VP’s report: Judi talked about the cruise to Pella coming up on Saturday and said she is planning a trip to an I-Cubs game for Friday, June 10th. She also mentioned a possible trip to ISU’s Reiman Gardens in July and a couple other ideas she is considering for late summer. Governor’s report: Denny had a number of remarks about developments from the NCCC Governors meeting last month. A new Director of Charity, Michele Cantelmo, was appointed after interviews were conducted and the Governors voted St. Jude’s as the new NCCC charity. He reported that registrations for the 2016 Convention in Omaha have exceeded 300 but there is bad news regarding the 2017 Convention in Bowling Green – it has been cancelled due to unresolvable contract issues with the NCM MSP. Event flyers for Newton and Ankeny have been submitted to the RCD and we’re awaiting approval. Denny closed with an update on Family Helping Family. Member at Large: Jay had nothing to report. Editor: Dave said that the NCCC Newsletter Contest is nearing a close – only the May Sportsmate remains to be submitted later in the month. Webmaster: Wayne W. was not present and there was no report. Competition Director: Paul asked for permission to spend about $30 to widen the label board for our speed events because it won’t hold results for seven events and then he talked about the logistics for getting the timing trailer to Marshalltown for Memorial weekend and from there to Newton for the Speedway events. Membership Director: Sheila reported no new members for April and asked Dave if he could make note in the May Sportsmate of several WR officer positions that will be vacated at yearend. 5 Old Business: Denny noted that he and Dave had discussed by-law revisions and concluded that no changes were required for 2016. There was follow-up discussion on the digital display for race times at our speed events, leading to a decision to go ahead with the purchase of Race America equipment for approximately $1,900. New Business: Dave said he noticed that the July 19th club meeting was going to fall on the Tuesday of Convention and to avoid that conflict, we decided to move the meeting to Tuesday, July 12th. We had a lengthy discussion of procedures for following up on Newton sponsors and Gary reiterated a desire to make Newton a destination weekend for future Memorial weekend events. Paul said he knew where to get a couple of lightly used canopies for corner workers at very little cost (to replace damaged ones) and we told him to go for it. Business was concluded at that point. Jay made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Ken and the meeting adjourned at 8:50PM. Respectfully, Dave Howard – Secretary General Meeting Minutes, May 17, 2016 The May general meeting was held at Jethro’s Lakehouse in Ankeny. President Gary Foster called the meeting to order at 7:00PM. There were no new members or guests in attendance. Secretary’s report: Dave Howard reviewed the minutes from the April general meeting. Among the items included were approval of the previous month’s minutes and Treasurer’s report and reports from the Vice-President, Governor, Member-at-Large, Editor, Webmaster, Competition and Membership. The minutes are published in Sportsmate on the website. Larry Noble made a motion to approve them as published, seconded by Jim Lucas and passed. Treasurer’s report: Ken Wilson reported that the club treasury went down about $1,500 in April because there wasn’t much income and he paid for the West Region Banquet. His detailed report is posted to the Members Only section of the club website. A motion to approve Ken’s report as posted was made by Larry N., seconded by Larry Mark and passed. President’s report: Gary had nothing to report. VP report: Wayne Nikolish reported for Judi on the cruise to Pella for the annual Tulip Festival and said an outing to see the Iowa Cubs play at Principal Park is scheduled for June 10th. Governor’s report: Denny wasn’t present but Gary reported that the contract with Iowa Speedway has been signed for June 25th & 26th and that event will be 7 low speeds on Saturday and 7 high speeds on Sunday. He also invited everyone to come out for the club’s Memorial weekend low speed events at the Marshalltown go-cart track. He thinks people will be surprised at the challenge this ½ mile road course presents but also said it is really fun to run there. Member-at-Large: Jay reported $126 in the 50/50 pot – and the winner of $63 was Curt McLeland. There was also a drawing for a door prize which was won by Nita Noble. Jay reported that the June meeting will be held at the Hilltop Restaurant on Hubbell Ave. He talked briefly about the Hooch Run planned for August and said a final count of 6 cars are signed up. Jay closed with information on the cruise nights Darren Brown has been working on. They will be held in conjunction with the Valley Junction Farmers Market on June 30th, July 28th and August 25th. Gregg Young Chevrolet is the sponsor and will support the Dick Mathern scholarship at DMACC on behalf of CCI. Editor: Dave reported that May’s Sportsmate is in the hands of the NCCC Newsletter Contest judges. He thanked Jim Jandik for his contribution of a tech article for that newsletter. Webmaster: Wayne W. had nothing to report. Points: Nan reminded everyone to make sure they’ve signed in for the meeting. Competition Director: Paul provided more details on the Memorial Weekend events in Marshalltown and said from a worker standpoint nothing could be simpler. He said we will go to Zeno’s Pizza for a Saturday evening party. 6 Membership Director: Sheila reported on Denny’s behalf regarding the April Governors meeting. Highlights: Nan has been appointed as a WR scholarship judge; the Governors voted St. Jude’s as the new NCCC charity; there are reportedly 18 club newsletters entered in the contest; the NCCC E-board has cancelled the 2017 Convention but Jim Jandik reported hearing news that NCCC has reached an accord with the Corvette Museum MSP to hold Convention in Bowling Green after all. Old Business: Sheila said she is expecting delivery of the digital display board on Thursday, the 19 th and will work on set-up leading into our Marshalltown event. New Business: Sheri and Jim Jandik recounted their recent trip to Hallett in Oklahoma and invited people to look at the photos on her laptop. Gary spoke briefly about Nichole P. reaching out to others around the West Region via social media re our Marshalltown and Newton events. Dave V. asked about motels for Marshalltown – there are several near Hwys. 14 & 30. Ken gave a rundown on sponsors for Newton. Buy and Sell: none. Ken made a motion to adjourn and Jim L. seconded. We adjourned at 7:30PM. Respectfully, Dave Howard – Secretary A Message from Your Governor… CCI’s competition season is in full swing after our first weekend event at Marshalltown was completed with the Iowa Speedway and Ankeny Airport yet to come. This was our first time at the Marshalltown go-kart track and it couldn’t have been any better. We had strong participation each of the three days making for a Memorial Weekend filled with fun and excitement. I think most all the participants thought it was a good choice and enjoyed the track and competition. It is nice to know we have another venue to consider in the future. It is time now to get ready for our weekend at the Iowa Speedway in Newton. Do you have your reservation completed and sent in? If not, now is the time. We need your support as competitors and workers to make this a great weekend. It is truly a premier site for our event and is also an opportunity to keep your high speed license current. Have you registered for this year’s NCCC National Convention in Omaha? If not, you should look at all that is scheduled. Use this link, http://www.corvettesnccc.org/Convention2016.html, to review all that is planned and ROAR into Omaha. Following close behind Convention is Karl Chevrolet’s 2016 Corvettes at Karl event July 21st -23rd. It can fill up fast so check out all the details on Karl’s website www.karlchevrolet.com/corvettesatkarl. Would you like to see your Corvette featured on the CCI website home page? If so, send a picture of your car or even better, a picture of you and your car to Wayne Weidmann, CCI’s Webmaster. We hope to begin showcasing member cars soon on the CCI home page so we would love to have your car to post. Flyers for upcoming club social events follow the “Odds and Ends” section of Sportsmate. Memorial Weekend Low Speeds. Well, for all the hand-wringing we went through leading up to our 3-day, 21-event Memorial Weekend Low Speeds, it turned out to be one of our best speed event weekends in recent memory. The Marshalltown go-cart track, known as Iowa International Raceway, was an eleventh hour replacement for our Memorial weekend traditionally held at the Chariton Airport. Most who participated left with wide smiles on their faces and all of CCI’s entrants were put at ease early after experiencing the challenge and excitement that far exceeded what we hoped for. It was predicted we would have fun and that turned out to be an understatement! If you missed it or even if you didn’t, we will all have another opportunity in early July to return for a fundraiser that will benefit the West Region Scholarship Fund (see West Region News on page 18). Memorial weekend racers pose under the Stars and Stripes on Saturday morning 9 Back to Texas! In the pits after Monday’s finale Iowa Cubs Outing. An enthusiastic group of sixteen spent the evening of Friday, June 10th hanging out at Principal Park along with 12,000 other baseball fans to take in an Iowa Cubs game. Unfortunately, the Round Rock Express provided the fireworks early and often before getting the better of the I-Cubs in this one, 11-4. All was not lost however as Friday nights at Principal Park also mean fireworks of the pyrotechnic variety. We sure did enjoy the show! 10 Racing at the Speedway. The tenth annual event at Newton’s Iowa Speedway takes place later this month on Saturday & Sunday, June 25th & 26th. Saturday will feature seven low-speeds and an evening pizza party while Sunday brings seven high-speeds. If you have a high speed license, don’t miss this opportunity to keep it active. See the flyer starting on page 21. Save the Date! Mark your calendars and look for more details in upcoming issues of Sportsmate: Thursday, June 30, 2016. The first of three cruise nights in conjunction with the Thursday evening Valley Junction Farmers Market will take place in the 300 block of 5th Street from 5-9PM on June 30th. The other dates are July 28th and August 25th with proceeds benefitting the Dick Mathern Memorial Scholarship at DMACC. For full details see the flyer on page 15. Tuesday, July 12, 2016. Don’t forget that the July club meeting has been moved ahead one week to avoid a conflict with the NCCC Convention in Omaha because our third Tuesday meeting night falls during the week of Convention. Sunday, July 24, 2016. Please join us when we cruise to Reiman Gardens at the southern gateway to Jack Trice Stadium on the ISU campus. Lavish outdoor gardens, Conservatory, Butterfly Pavilion and a return appearance of the Nature Connects®: Art with LEGO® Bricks exhibit by artist Sean Kenney highlight this year’s displays. The flyer appears on page 16. Buy & Sell FOR SALE: 2009 ZR1 Corvette. 2009 was the inaugural year for the C6 ZR1 Corvette and this as new example is offered for sale by CCI member Craig Eggleston. Both Sheri and Jim Jandik are frequent contributors to Sportsmate and often without any coaxing from yours truly. The article below recounts their experience early last month at Oklahoma’s Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. It sounds like they had a great time and would encourage any of us with a high speed license (or seeking to obtain one) to give Hallett a try. This has been an annual spring event in the NCCC’s Southwest Region for many years so keep on the lookout early each year for information if running there interests you. Editor’s note: if you have something you would like to submit for publication, drop me an email! Oklahoma Thunder An Appropriately Named Event Welcome sign (Photo credit: Tracy Gaudu) and track configuration (Photo credit: Hallett Motor Racing Circuit website) Hallett Motor Racing Circuit located in Jennings, OK is the venue for the Southwest Region’s Oklahoma Thunder event in May. This event is appropriately named for a couple of reasons, the first of which relates to Oklahoma’s weather! We haven’t attended since 2011 due to predictions of bad weather either for our drive down, the drive back, and/or during the event itself. To our amazement we were finally able to return this year. Tornadoes occurred the weekend before and the days following, but the weekend of May 6, 7 and 8 was sunny (ok, it rained Sunday). The track itself is a very technical 1.8 mile course that includes several hills and 10 corners including one that is a 165 degree turn at the bottom of a hill! Not having been at the track for so long we were both a bit nervous as to if we would remember each aspect of the course. The weekend started with a ‘play day’ on Friday. Class instruction is always offered for those that are new to our crazy sport or those that let their license lapse. Although I was close to needing the ‘refresher’ course due to lack of track time over the past few years, Jim and I were able to sign up just for ‘play day.’ Approximately 20 cars and a few extra drivers showed up to play. Some of those cars are the second reason the event is appropriately named. Although a few cars were stock and somewhat quiet, many have had modifications made to the motor as well as the exhaust making for quite the roar as we all sped around the track. Four different groups of five to six cars were formed and the track official did an excellent job of spacing us out as we entered the track. This eliminated having traffic pile up and the need to pass others, although admittedly it is fun to pass someone else! Jim let me run the car first and as I drove the track under a caution flag for the first lap, the turns and elevation changes came back to me quickly. The green flag waved as I finished that lap so I had to step 12 up the pace. The tires and brakes were getting warmed up so each lap I pressed the gas pedal a little harder and pushed the brake markers a little further while focusing on how the increased speed changed how the car responded to the turn in and exit points. By the end of the first 20-minute session, I felt I was pretty close to being back “in the groove.” The car looks like it’s stopped, but it’s definitely NOT!! Photo Credit: Tim Turner, Hallett Foto Shop As the day went on we both felt confident that the car was solid and we were ready for the timed events on Saturday. The events are run differently here and it’s mainly due to, you guessed it, the Oklahoma weather. Because they have had such bad luck with rain over the years, they run the first run for event one through seven then run the second runs. This allows everyone to get at least one run in on all events. Then if it’s raining or someone wants to leave early, they get their points for running all seven events, assuming the first runs could all be made. The lap times are captured using the track’s timing equipment which is great. We did discover that putting the transponder in the front of the car caused timing issues, although they were quickly resolved. Not knowing how the events were run, Jim and I had only signed up for four events thinking we could get done early and head back home. This did cause some confusion on our part as they did a few other things a bit different than what we are used to as well. The number of cars had increased significantly and instead of breaking us out by car class, we had two groups. The first group ran the first run of event 1 then the second group completed the first run of event 1. This allowed for most, with the exception of two driver cars to have cold tires for the first run of event 1. Since group 2 people were already in their cars they ran the first run of event two then group 1. They followed that pattern all day and like I said we had to pay very close attention to what was going on, but we made it through our events with the exception of the last run for Jim’s last event. We had fallen victim to a bit of technical difficulty, but nothing that will stop us from attending the next event. We had also, for the most part, met our goals. My high speed license will now be good for an additional three years. We got some much needed seat time and we had fun. As a bonus we got to catch up with some old friends and make a few new ones. Jim as he navigates corner 6. Photo Credit: Tim Turner, Hallett Foto Shop I’d like to take a moment to thank a few people for their hard work during the weekend… Dale Acker, Ron and Jeannie Ruston – thank you for organizing the weekend and getting many of your club members to assist with tech inspection and staging. Dale, an extra thanks to you for making sure the bolt found on the track was brought to its rightful owner. I didn’t want it to be ours, but we are thankful that it was discovered before anything really bad happened. 13 Connie Stephens and all the staff at the track – thank you all for the hospitality and making the event run smoothly. To our fellow racers – thanks for the fun! We loved watching you go around the track as much as driving it ourselves. So many talented drivers and beautiful cars! Here are just a few. Bob Patillo – Grand Sport made from just about every generation. Bernyce Molenda – Super Charged C7 Z06 Kevin and Kathy Anthony – RP car, loud and fast! Tracy Gaudu – don’t be fooled by a lady driver! I think I’ve seen it said many times before, but I’ll say it again… It’s not just the racing that makes the weekend great, but the people you meet, the friends you make and the memories that will last forever. Saturday’s race participants. The WR Events Calendar through July is shown below. Flyers currently available for June and July events appear on the succeeding pages including CCI’s Racing at the Speedway on pages 21-25. The last of these prior to Convention is the West Region Fundraiser at the go-cart track in Marshalltown. Proceeds will directly benefit the Region’s scholarship fund so by all means take note of the great time everyone had at CCI’s recent event there and make plans to attend. Just a reminder that the weekends surrounding Convention are required to be kept clear, therefore competition nationwide is suspended for the last part of July. Stay tuned as competition will resume in August. 2016 West Region Competition Schedule Date Saturday, June 18, 2016 Sunday, June 19, 2016 Saturday, June 25, 2016 Sunday, June 26, 2016 Saturday, July 9, 2016 Sunday, July 10, 2016 Event Type Low Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross High Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross Low Speed Autocross Name of Event Location MAC Low Speeds Council Bluffs, IA MAC Low Speeds Council Bluffs, IA MAC Low Speeds Council Bluffs, IA Racing at the Speedway Racing at the Speedway Racing at the Speedway Racing at the Speedway Racing at the Speedway West Region Fundraiser West Region Fundraiser Newton, IA Newton, IA Newton, IA Newton, IA Marshalltown, IA Marshalltown, IA Marshalltown, IA 18 Hosting Club Sioux Falls Corvette Club Cornhusker Corvette Club Platte Valley Corvette Club Corvette Club of Iowa River City Corvette Assn North Iowa Corvettes North Iowa Corvettes Midwest Corvette Society Midwest Corvette Society 4 State Vettes, Inc Notes 7 Low Speeds 1 Low Speed 6 Low Speeds 1 Low Speed 3 Low Speeds 3 Low Speeds 7 High Speeds 7 Low Speeds 3 Low Speeds 4 Low Speeds 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 Thanks to our Sponsors City Wide Heating & Air Conditioning Cottman Transmission Center Wayne & Cheryl Weidmann Rocklyn Mobile Home Park 515 Lawn and Landscape Central Iowa Featherlite Lauterbach Buick GMC Paul & Sheila Wyman Jim & Sandy Lucas Larry & Nita Noble McIntire Electric Van Wall Group Bankers Trust Denny Luther Dave Howard Sugar Shack Stine Seed Car-X 28 Complete Car Care Car/ Light Truck Maintenance Tires, wheel balancing, & mounting regular and high performance Transmission and drive train repair specialists on location Clutches, Axles, Rear Ends, Transfer Cases, and more Domestic, Foreign, Performance Cars and Light Trucks All CCI members get a 5% discount (Tell us when you drop off your vehicle) If you’re looking for the best BBQ in the Midwest, you’ll find it at Central Iowa's place for Championship BBQ!
