Timeless Classics
A charming Victorian boulevard with
canopied shops framed by leafy gardens
and fountains, Lord Street has been
Southport’s most famous landmark for over
a century. Specialist shops and designer
boutiques nestle amongst tea rooms, cafés
and restaurants, many with outdoor dining
areas creating a continental flavour for
visitors.
Right at the heart of Lord Street is
Wayfarers Shopping Arcade with its
stunning glass-domed roof and beautiful
period décor - over 30 exclusive stores
can be found here, along with a café and
restaurant where you can sit and watch the
world go by. The Royal Arcade, situated
towards the south end of Lord Street, is
the ideal place to search for antiques and
collectables.

Shop ‘til you drop
Shoppers will be delighted to discover
there’s much more retail therapy to indulge
in beyond Lord Street. For high street
brands and national names, start at Chapel
Street, adjacent to Lord Street and fully
pedestrianised. Linking through from Lord
Street to Chapel Street is the Cambridge
Arcade and Cambridge Walks and you’ll
also find Marble Place on Chapel Street
so plenty of undercover shopping! Just a
couple of minutes walk from Chapel Street
will bring you to Southport Indoor Market
Hall which has a range of classic market
stalls offering local produce and fantastic
value goods - and a licensed café too.
There are some niche shops on Market
Street and if you enjoy ‘village’ style
shopping then head for Wesley Street with
its pretty pastel coloured shop fronts.
Just by the sea but still within easy walking
distance of the town centre is Ocean Plaza,
a great mix of retail and leisure. There’s a
great selection of brand name shops and
restaurants, as well as a multiplex cinema
and Premier Bowl and Laser, plus over
1200 parking spaces. Five minutes walk
from Southport train station is C12 retail
park with stores offering everything from
fashion to garden furniture!

Where great events happen
All year round, Southport plays host to a
variety of exciting events from flowers to
food and planes to pyrotechnics so why not
plan your visit to the town to coincide with
one of them?
It begins with Jazz on a Winter’s Weekend
- brighten up a gloomy winter’s day by
enjoying some great jazz from a variety of
artists. The world famous Crabbie’s Grand
National meeting returns to the nearby
8
Aintree Racecourse in April. It’s a great
event for all - even if you’re not a serious
punter, with three days of fantastic horse
racing.
The Southport Jazz Festival swings into
town in May with a plethora of talent
appearing in gigs across the town centre many of which are free. The end of May
sees the Southport Food & Drink Festival
returning to Victoria Park with three days of
live cooking demonstrations, a food village
and much more - it’s a great free, fun day
out for all the family to enjoy.
June welcomes back the Woodvale Rally
to its new home in Victoria Park - two action
packed days of fun for all the family, and
then later in the month, Southport will mark
the British Armed Forces Day and the
Southport Falklands Anniversary Parade.
In August, the Southport Flower Show
returns to Victoria Park for one of the town’s
summer highlights. There’s so much to
inspire and surprise you at the show with
stunning gardens and superb floral displays
- it’s not just about gardening though,
there’s a food hall, craft marquee, family
entertainment and much more!

Prepare to be Wowed
The fun certainly doesn’t stop when the
summer season ends and in September
the renowned 24 Hour Yacht Race takes
place on Southport’s Marine Lake - teams
compete around the clock to win one of the
UK’s top endurance dinghy races.
10
The Southport Air Show, held on the
seafront in September, will once again thrill
the crowds with two days of astounding
aerial displays. There’s lots to enjoy on
the ground too, with the Air Show Village
offering stalls, simulators and model aircraft.
In October, Southport skies will once again
burst into light when the British Musical
Fireworks Championship takes place in
Victoria Park. Over three evenings, top
pyrotechnic teams from around the country
will battle it out for the prestigious title of
UK Champion, each choreographing their
displays to all genres of music. And don’t
forget the Southport Comedy Festival
which also takes place in October - ten days
of side splitting comedy in venues across
the town.
There’s another evening of fireworks in
November when the Hesketh Round Table
Fireworks Display welcomes thousands
of spectators to Victoria Park whilst raising
money for worthy causes. Later in the month
Southport gets the festive season off to a
great start with the town’s Christmas Lights
Switch On Parade - watch Father Christmas
lead this colourful parade through the town
centre as dusk falls and the Christmas lights
are turned on for the first time this year.

Fun for all
the family
For fun-packed family days out, Southport
has a great choice of things to do, no matter
what your age or what the weather.
One of Southport’s most famous landmarks
is the Grade II listed Pier - the oldest iron
pier in the country and the second longest.
If you’re feeling energetic enjoy the fresh air
and take a walk along to the Pier Pavilion,
or if you fancy a more leisurely trip, let the
pier tram take the strain. In the Pavilion
you’ll find a collection of traditional ‘pennyin-the-slot’ machines, as well as a licensed
café and small exhibition on Southport’s
history.
The iconic Silcock’s Funland and carousel
have provided a warm welcome to visitors
to Southport Pier for generations. Here
12
you can treat yourself to fish and chips and
an ice cream or play the latest video and
arcade games, there are also mini rides for
the little ones. Or why not hop on a hobby
horse, the beautifully painted Silcock’s
carousel is over 100 years old.
Continue the fun at Pleasureland
Amusement Park, where there’s a mix of
rides and amusements set around a park
that’s clean, bright and festooned with
hanging baskets. Pleasureland is also
a free admission park, which means
you only pay for the rides you
choose - helping the
family budget go that
little bit further.
Dunes Splash World is Southport’s all weather water park, it’s kept at a constant
84 degrees Fahrenheit so it’s the ideal place
to visit no matter what the weather’s like
outside. There are flumes and raft rides
for all ages plus a relaxing bubble spa and
water play area for youngsters. And with
a poolside café, parents can stay dry and
watch their children enjoying themselves.
Ocean Plaza is where you’ll find even more
attractions including the Vue multi-screen
cinema and Playtown Kids Adventure
Playground. It’s also the home of Premier
Bowl & Laser the town’s bowling alley and
laser zone, which also has a café, licenced
bar and the latest video games. There’s
a great choice of branded shops and
restaurants here too.

13
Keeping the kids happy
Southport’s Marine Lake is the largest
man made leisure lake in the UK and here
you’ll find water based activities to keep
the whole family entertained. Why not hire
a motor boat, take a trip on the thrilling
power boat or if you’re feeling more
energetic one of the swan pedalos. Circling
the edge of the lake is the Miniature
Lakeside Railway - an enchanting way to
enjoy the seafront sights.
Minutes from here in Kings Gardens is the
Model Railway Village; watch as the mini
train trundles its way through the quaint
model village. Then round your day off with
a game of crazy golf - always a sure-fire way
to guarantee laughs aplenty.
Just out of town and perfect for a day trip is
WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre where
wilderness and family-friendliness combine.
There’s plenty to see and do, inside and
out, all year round, with otters, beavers,
kingfishers, flamingos, pink-footed geese
and whooper swans - you’ll be amazed at
how close you can get to these and other
fantastic wetland wildlife. Stroll along the
peaceful nature trail, watch birds from the
shelter of the hides, and in the spring and
summer take to the water on a canoe safari
14
or guided boat tour for some awe-inspiring
natural encounters. Discover mini-beasts
at the pond zones, splash and dash in the
adventure play area and explore the new
interactive wetland wildlife exhibit ‘WoW is it Weird or Wonderful?’
Windmill Animal Farm is just a few
minutes from Martin Mere and here you
can experience the every day running of
a working farm and see farmyard animals
including lambs, goats and pigs. The farm
also has three play areas, a play barn and
pedal tractors - a fun way for the youngsters
to get around the farm.
Farmer Ted’s, home to the famous
Halloween experience ‘Farmaggedon’,
is not far from Southport either. Throughout
the year it’s a popular family attraction.
There are plenty of farm animals to meet
and pet plus soft play zones, a relaxation
area and cafeteria.
If you fancy cycling around Southport and
its attractions the town has a great cycle
hire scheme operating from Southport train
station and the Eco Visitor Centre. You can
pick up cycle route maps from these points
too so that you can plan your route.

Sandtastic Beaches
Southport beach is at the north end of a
22 mile stretch of coastline which reaches
to the southern edge of the borough of
Sefton. It’s the ideal antidote to the hustle
and bustle of the town centre. Enjoy the
magnificent coastal views through the
seaside telescopes and enjoy building sand
castles or tuck into a picnic on the beach.
You’ll also find Southport’s iconic Pier here.
A little further down the coast is Ainsdale
Beach, Southport’s main bathing beach with
RNLI Lifeguards patrolling in the summer
months. A backdrop of miles of scenic sand
dunes offer the perfect place to unwind as
you enjoy some of the area’s most beautiful
coastline.
A ten minute drive from here is the idyllic
area at Lifeboat Road on the Formby coast,
with good car parking and disabled access
to the sandy beach.
16
Along with a backdrop of dunes and
pinewoods, it offers a beautiful sanctuary
to unwind and relax in. The bathing water
at Lifeboat Road, Formby was tested as
excellent in 2013 and it is also a Seaside
Award winner. The ever helpful, RNLI
Lifeguards are present on the beach during
the summer holidays.
Crosby Coastal Park also has a number of
scenic pathways and a marine lake. Here,
you’ll also find Crosby Lakeside Adventure
Centre where you can take part in a variety
of water sports, use the gym facilities or
unwind in the Lakeside Bar Bistro with
a drink and tasty meal.
The Southport and Sefton coast is a
favourite area for walkers, ramblers and
cyclists and the Sefton Walking and
Cycling Guide, available to download from
seftonsnaturalcoast.co.uk or by calling
01704 533333 is a handy brochure packed
full of local walking and cycling routes.

Back to Nature
Southport is surrounded by the beautiful
countryside and sand dunes of Sefton’s
natural coast. The area is home to many rare
species of wildlife including the endearing
and endangered Red Squirrel.
North of Southport Pier, the sand dunes
give way to the marshes of the Ribble
Estuary, an internationally important place
for waterbirds in the winter months.
The Ribble Marshes National Nature
Reserve and the RSPB’s Marshside Nature
Reserve are the gateway to the estuary and
well known for their spectacular displays
of waterfowl.
To the south, the coast is blessed with
some of the most special coastal nature
reserves in the country - these are the jewels
in the crown of Sefton’s natural coast. The
Ainsdale and Birkdale Sandhills Local
Nature Reserve adjacent to the bathing
beach and the Ainsdale Sand Dunes
National Nature Reserve are only ten
minutes drive from the town centre.
Many endangered creatures can be seen
here, including the Natterjack Toad, also
known as the ‘Birkdale Nightingale’, the
shy Sand Lizard, the Dark
Green Fritillary butterfly
and many more. The
Sands Lake Nature
Trail, with its boardwalk
access is also situated
nearby, about 15 minutes
from Southport by car,
and is another
natural beauty
on the coast.
Lifeboat Road,
with its excellent
car parking and
disabled access
to the beach is ideal for families and those
in search of coastal wildlife. Wide stretches
of beach with amazing numbers of wading
birds during the winter, are a treat for the
birdwatcher along with Red Squirrels in the
pinewoods and a landscape dominated
by the high sand dunes of the adjacent
Ravensmeols Dunes Local Nature Reserve.
The National Trust site at Freshfield adjoins
this area and again has sandy beaches,
dunes and pinewoods - you may also catch
a glimpse of the Red Squirrel here too.
Back in Southport’s centre is the Queen’s
Jubilee Nature Trail - a wildlife haven in
the town. In 1992 the site was restored by
schools, volunteers and local businesses,
to celebrate the Queen’s 40th anniversary.
Just across the road, is the Eco Visitor
Centre. This award winning building was
constructed with environmentally friendly
materials and even generates much of
its own power via a wind
turbine. It’s also one of the
main ‘welcome points’ for
Southport as it’s where the
town’s popular Park and
Ride operates from.

Beautiful gardens
come rain or shine
Southport is well known for its beautiful
parks and gardens; from the Victorian
splendour of the Botanic Gardens to those
along Lord Street in the town centre.
Churchtown is just a ten minute drive from
the centre of Southport and is home to The
Botanic Gardens. Originally opened in 1874,
these Victorian gardens are bursting with
colourful floral displays. Winding through
the park is the garden’s lake and a multitude
of pathways. There’s also a Victorian fernery,
aviary, children’s play area, gift shop and
café, so there’s plenty to see and do for the
whole family.
20
Hesketh Park is even closer to the town
centre and is the largest park in Southport,
as well as being home to one of the UK’s
few remaining floral clocks. Feed the ducks
on the lake and admire the variety of unique
plants and flowers in the restored Victorian
conservatory. Or why not take a walk
along one of the park’s pathways, through
ornamental gardens and round off your day
with a bite to eat in the café?
Victoria Park, venue for the famous
Southport Flower Show and many other
events, is just a few minutes walk from
Lord Street. There are acres of open lawn,
perfect for ball games and family fun as well
as a network of pathways - a favourite with
cyclists and skaters. There’s also a children’s
play area - ideal for youngsters to enjoy and
at the edge of the park the model
boating lake.
Southport’s legendary Lord Street is not
only known for its Victorian canopied
shops but also for its stunning, landscaped
gardens. They’ve recently been restored
and are home to a number of fountains and
water features - there’s plenty of seating
too, making it the ideal spot to relax or have
a picnic.

Culture for Everyone
Southport’s reputation as England’s Classic
Resort is supported by the beautiful
Edwardian and Victorian architecture
throughout the town. Add to this the
theatres, arts venues, parks and gardens
and it’s easy to see why Southport has a
great reputation for culture.
The Atkinson is Southport’s beautiful
new home for music, theatre, art, poetry,
literature and history, right in the middle
of Lord Street. Significant investment has
been made in refurbishing the stunning
19th century buildings, to create a really
welcoming multi art-form venue with a
strong contemporary feel.
The Atkinson offers an exciting and varied
programme for families, cultural tourists
and arts enthusiasts alike, with a full day
and night time offer. While the day away
visiting the new shop that sells gifts and
contemporary crafts from regional makers
and then relax in the Bakery, choosing from
a selection of artisan bread sandwiches,
cakes and sharing platters. You can even
22
take little bit of The Atkinson home with
you from the delicatessen. Wander through
the major exhibitions and see performances
from some of the UK’s foremost musicians,
actors, performers and companies as well as
films, family activities and much more.
In October 2014 The Atkinson becomes
something even more exciting for visitors,
with the opening of the museum which will
tell the story of Southport and Sefton as
well as the area’s dramatic maritime history.
It will also be the new home for the
Goodison Egyptology Collection, a
remarkable collection of archaeology that
has not seen for over 40 years.
The Atkinson is open throughout the year
with varied seasonal programmes and
changing exhibitions, so whatever time of
year you visit, it offers a fun, creative and
varied day out with family or friends.
The Southport Theatre and Convention
Centre on Southport’s Promenade has a
year-round programme of concerts and
shows. From music, comedy and exhibitions
to a traditional Christmas pantomime, the
theatre caters for all tastes. Back in the
town centre is the Little Theatre on
Hoghton Street. It has an extensive
programme of plays and performances
and is home to many of the area’s
amateur dramatic groups.
For a quintessentially British attraction,
look no further than Southport’s British
Lawnmower Museum, the only one of
its kind in the world. Home to over 300
restored exhibits of garden machinery,
some of which once belonged to the rich
and famous. Machines on display include
those from Princess Diana, Brian May
and Southport’s own Jean Alexander.

23
Time to paint the town red
With all that there is to see and do in the
town, it won’t be long before you’ve worked
up an appetite. And on the gastronomic
front Southport can certainly deliver.
With over 100 restaurants, cafés and tea
rooms there are plenty of places to stop
and refuel.
Whether you’re looking for fine dining, a
tasty snack or traditional cream tea there is
a fantastic selection to choose from. Plus
you’ll find a great choice of cuisines from
Italian to Indian and Japanese to Lebanese -
24
not forgetting traditional British of course.
The Southport Restaurateurs Association
is a group of the town’s top eateries - look
out for their restaurants on your visit as
they’ll have the Association’s logo in the
window. You can also receive a copy of the
Southport Eating Out Guide by emailing
your name and address to
[email protected],
calling 01704 533333 or

visitsouthport.com.
After enjoying a delicious meal, there’s even
more fun to be had as the evening draws
on. From cosy pubs to stylish wine and tapas
bars, there’s a great choice of places to while
your night away. If ‘real ale’ is more your
thing then there’s a selection of snug pubs
to relax in with your favourite tipple. Looking
for something more upbeat? Then visit one
of the many music bars and nightspots in the
town centre. If you fancy a flutter Southport’s
new Genting Casino is the place to go. With
the Fahrenheit Grill Restaurant and a bar,
it’s the complete night out.

25
Sporting Choice
Southport has a lot to offer sports fans world-class golf courses, superb sailing
facilities and Aintree, the world’s most
famous racecourse and home of The
Grand National, is also close by. Southport
is renowned for its high number of
championship golf courses and lies right at
the heart of England’s Golf Coast. There
are 15 top clubs no more than an hour’s
drive from the town, seven of which are less
than half an hour away - so less time on the
motorway and more time on the fairway.
26
Royal Birkdale, just a few minutes drive
from the town centre, has been ranked as
England’s top golf course and justifiably
so after hosting The Open Championship
on nine occasions, most recently in 2008.

Hotels, Guest Accommodation and Self
Catering Accommodation Rating System
Across a number of the accommodation
advertisements within this guide, you’ll notice
ratings displayed - these have been awarded by
Visit Britain or the AA. Hotels that opt into this scheme are given a
rating from one to five stars - the more stars, the higher the quality and
the greater the range of facilities and level of services provided. Guest
Accommodation covers a wide variety of serviced accommodation,
including guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, inns and farmhouses. These
establishments are also rated from one to five stars, as too are Self
Catering properties. Progressively higher levels of quality and customer
care must be provided for each of the one to five star ratings. The more
stars awarded, the higher the overall quality in areas such as cleanliness,
service and hospitality, bedrooms, bathrooms and food quality. The
ratings are your sign of the National Quality Assurance Standards, giving
you the confidence to book the accommodation that best meets your
needs and expectations. For detailed information on the accommodation
rating system check qualityintourism.com or
theaa.com/travel/accommodation_restaurants_grading.html
Southport Hotels Association
Book with confidence with members of the
Southport Hotels Association (incorporating Guest
Houses, Caterers and Holiday Flats [Est 1888]),
visit southporthotels.org for more information.
Members of the local Southport Hotels Association have also been shown
as appropriate. All accommodation within this guide, as a minimum,
has either been inspected by the Southport Hotels Association / is a
Southport Hotels Association member / graded by Visit Britain or the AA.
All ratings were correct at the time of going to press in November 2013
but are subject to change.
The Southport Hotels Association is your guarantee of comfort,
satisfaction and safety - and only Association Members can display the
symbol. Members are here to make your holiday a real success. They
work to ensure a good standard of accommodation and food for the
tariffs charged.
All terms and tariffs quoted by advertisers are as accurate as possible
at the time of going to press. All terms and tariffs quoted include
vat at its current rate and are subject to change if the rate of vat is
altered. Prospective visitors are therefore advised to check current
tariffs with holiday establishments before finalising a booking so that
misunderstandings about tariffs and terms are avoided. It is regretted that
Sefton Council as publishers of this guide cannot enter into any disputes
concerning tariffs and hotels accounts which are private matters between
the accommodation provider and their guests.
