SELKIRK
Village with a History by the Lake
Selkirk is the oldest Village in Walpole Township.
United Empire Loyalists and Mennonites settled this area in the late
1790’s & early 1800’s. Site of raids and a murder during the war of 1812.
First Women’s Institute in Haldimand County. Large Natural Gas field
discovered in 1904 lead to large scale exploration on land & lake for the
next centry. The commercial fishing industry shipped fish to the USA
and the apple drying factory shipped apples to England.
The town was a mill centre that provided all the local areas needs.
Pick up a pamphlet and take a Histroical Tour of over 30 places.
North Erie Shore Historical Society
The North Erie Shore Historical Society or NESHS is a group of local people
who have an interest in local history. They have three meetings a year plus a
bus trip. Our interest ranges from genealogical to architecture. NESHS presents
Heritage Day, at the Selkirk Centennial Community Centre, which draws 700
to 1000 people from near and far. Many local people demonstrate the skills of
yesteryears such as butter, ice-cream, sausage, sauerkraut and rope making, all
made the old fashioned way. The nice thing is that you get to partake in their
handiwork as all are available as snacks or can be bought in bulk to take home
for a meal later. Come join us next Heritage Day, Feb. 16, 2016, and see raw
wool being carded, spun and knit. The only thing missing is the sheep shearing
(that gets a bit messy). See raw wood carved into a beautiful bird, local artists
with their work and displays of apple carvings slowly shriveling into old tanned
wrinkled faces.
Anyone interested in joining our group can call Dana @ 905-776-1869 for information.
