What happens when you get hungry? Does your energy
level go up? Mine does! I seem to have a big increase in
my desire to find food. Without even thinking, I will find
myself gravitating toward the refrigerator or the pantry.
What does it take to deny myself food? Motivation and will
power. If I am not going to eat, I need a good reason.
During Lent, I have one. Catholics fast on Ash Wednesday
and on Good Friday. I like to do a complete fast.
Why do I fast? I fast because I want to be one with the
Church. I want to be united with everyone who is also
fasting. When we all fast, we share a link to each other. We
know how it feels and we know what people are going
through. We know the sacrifice and the rewards.
What rewards? When I fast, I find freedom. My basic
instinct to eat does not control me. I control it. I also
increase self discipline. If I can choose to not eat when I
feel like eating, I can also choose to do what is good even
when I don't feel like it. Fasting helps me to live a free life
and a good life.
To fast, we also develop our will power. When I am hungry,
I need to will myself to focus on the tasks at hand. I need to
remind myself that food is not my life. I need to pray and ask
God to help me. What happens is that I will my body to go
one direction - toward sacrifice - while my body strives to
go another direction - toward eating. In the end, my will
power grows so I become a stronger person.
Lent is here. I encourage everyone to come to Church, to
use the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and to fast.
As
followers of Christ, we are not looking to do the least we can
do. We are looking to do the most we can do.

WHAT GOD HAS DONE IN MY LIFE by Rosanne Smith
What God has done in my life……. I am
Rosanne Smith, 48; I have been a member of
St. Ann’s since 1994, and a Catholic since
birth. God has thankfully been present every
day of my life. Even when I do not recognize
Him or even acknowledge Him, He is present
and watchful, loving me as a child of God.
In my first marriage, God, my husband and I
created two beautiful children together. This
marriage did end in divorce, but through the
assistance of St. Ann’s and the Diocese of
Madison, an annulment was sanctioned and
healing continued. Faith, and a relationship
with Christ, carried my family through.
I was blessed with a Catholic upbringing. I am
the youngest of seven children. I grew up in
Bloomer, WI (about three hours north of
Stoughton), and I went to parochial school in
my primary grades and in college. I have
always believed in God’s presence, but I have
not always worked on a relationship with God.
The first time I ever really looked at my
decision to be a practicing Catholic was after
college. Before this, I believed in the faith, I
prayed, I practiced the principles, and lived a
“good” life but I never really made a decision
to be a practicing Catholic.
Christ was present at every stage. Friends
and family helped me see God at every turn.
At one point I remember my sister, Mary Ann,
encouraging me to count my blessings every
day. Count at least three blessings every
day. God is present. God is with us all.
God has given me so much. God gave me a
wonderful family friend, Dory, who was a
nursing assistant who cared for babies. She
was my inspiration for my career choice of
caring for infants. I am employed at St.
Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI in the
Neonatal ICU (NICU) and I get to see
creation on a daily basis. God in action. My
maternal grandfather Arthur, had a stroke
when I was ten years old. I was blessed with
opportunities to assist him in rehabilitation
and to assist my grandmother in the process
also.
God was present.
Through this
process I witnessed unconditional love, faith
and respect.
My grandparents prayed
morning prayer, meal prayer, the afternoon
rosary, and evening prayers together. They
also attended Mass as often as possible.
God ever present...a relationship growing... a
witness of faith.
PASTORAL CARE
by Shaun Kleitsch
God brought me into another union of
marriage. This marriage was witnessed and
recognized by God and our church. God is
with us. God is present every day.
As a daughter in a Catholic family, service to
church was always part of my practice. In my
formative years I assisted with catechism. In
college, I was a Eucharistic minister. After
college, I was a reader and a catechism
instructor. At St. Ann’s I have been invited by
God to participate in faith formation on
multiple levels. Presently, I assist with meals
and snacks when called upon. I am a
Eucharistic Minister. I participate in Lord
Teach Me To Pray, Women’s Faith Study,
and CEW. God has brought me to where I
am today.
God has opened my eyes to His people. As
earlier stated, I am a nurse in the NICU. I
witness healing and death. My professional
journey is an opportunity to serve God and
His people and to witness as a Catholic
believer to others.
As a volunteer with Southern Care Hospice
and the Personal Essentials Pantry, I am
blessed by God to serve His People.
Through my faith studies at St. Ann’s, and
God, I have opened myself up in community
service to speak of God, to avail God in the
form of prayer, time and presence. Years
ago I separated my faith life and my work/
volunteer life. But now, through study with
other believers of Christ and with God as our
Divine Leader, I now feel open to speak of
God in many settings. God is present in my
daily living, every day.
Yes indeed, I am a follower of God. I am still
in the process of my faith journey but I have
come a long way. God has granted me
patience, acceptance and purpose. Each day
is a gift for me, and you, from God. I feel
blessed by God to have been given the
freedom to make choices; to choose Christ, to
choose to read the Bible and to study the
Word of God.

CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE
WEEKEND by Shaun Kleitsch
Were you unable to attend this year? Well,
make sure you mark it down as a “must do”
for next year. What did you miss out on?
After the CEW weekends this year, a
participant wrote to me to let me know how
she viewed the weekend: “It was like reading
the best book ever, lots of twists and turns,
tears, laughter and when I was done it was
life changing in the best way possible.
Instead of just reading I played a part in it
which made it that much more fantastic.” We
are looking forward already to next year!
Won’t you join us?
Because of privacy reasons, we have limited
access to names of our parishioners who
may be hospitalized. Upon admission to the
hospital, please identify yourself as a St. Ann
member if you would like us to check in on
you during your stay. Or, you can also let us
know prior to your admission and Father
Randy would be happy to anoint you if you
would like to receive that healing sacrament.

will do greater works than these”. JOHN 14:12

I AM PRO LIFE by Kristin Nett
Kristin Nett is a member of St. Ann Parish and is
currently a freshman at the University of Nebraska.Lincoln
As I sit writing this on the Pennsylvania
turnpike at mile marker 133.6, I am aware of
four things; my butt is numb from this seat,
my stomach hurts from lack of food, I can’t
find a comfortable sleeping position, and I’m
annoyed from being stranded on this bus for
almost 24 hours due to the snowstorm. After
analyzing the situation, I thought, would I go
through all of this again just to promote the
value of life? Heck yes I would.
young people chose to make the trip from honor it is to have that belief. Help them feel

speak on the behalf of God.
You, our parents and respected adults, are
our role models in the Catholic faith. We need
you in order to expand and sustain our pro-life
generation. Once that happens, we will have
the knowledge, power and the confidence to
make our voices heard.
After attending the March for Life, I’m not
afraid anymore to share why I believe. I am
pro-life because I want to fight for the rights of
those who cannot. I am pro-life because that
"clump of cells" was once you and me. I am
pro-life because my mom chose life. I am-prolife because I value and respect life. I am prolife because no one has the right to take
someone's life away. I am pro-life because I
want to honor the lives of the 7 million who
didn't get to live. I am pro-life because I am
pro-woman, and women deserve better than
abortion. To the youth of St. Ann Parish; it’s
time for our voices to be heard. Let’s work
together to make abortion not only illegal in
our world, but unthinkable.
Just a few days ago, I had set off on the
March for Life trip with my Catholic church at
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For those
of you who are unaware, the March for Life is
a pro-life rally held in Washington D.C. to
protest abortion. Just a day ago, I had
marched around the square with thousands of
other people just to simply draw attention to
the problem that is abortion. To say that it
was a life-changing experience would be an
understatement. I’m so glad I went on the trip,
even with all the obstacles that we faced.
When I first heard about the trip, I knew I
wanted to go because I enjoy learning more
about what it means to be pro-life. Growing
up Catholic, I was taught about the
importance of life, and how life should only be
decided according to God’s will. I tried many
ways at my own school to promote these
beliefs, but many times I was discouraged
and ganged up on because that belief was
the minority. I didn’t feel like I could make a
difference in the pro-life movement because I
was so young. But, after attending the March
for Life, I am confident that I can make a
difference in this movement no matter what
my age.
At the March for Life, the majority of the
people there were high school and college
students. I was shocked to see how many
That’s when I realized that the power is now in
our hands. We are the pro-life generation, and
we can do this; we can end abortion. All it
takes is the help from incredible adult role
models who are willing to take the time to
educate youth on abortion. The only problem
is that people don’t want to talk about
abortion. It makes people feel uncomfortable.
What I’m asking you, the adults of St. Ann
Parish, is to talk about abortion with your
children. Educate the youth of our parish on
what it means to be pro-life, and what an

Our Parish of St. Ann’s is doing a wonderful
job of helping these vulnerable unborn
babies by contributing essential items to the
Women’s Care Center and Pregnancy
Helpline. We have received many beautiful
homemade items such as blankets, quilts,
and booties (pictured); also outfits and
diapers.
What's the pro-life movement all about? It's
about more than banning abortion, as
important as that is. Ultimately, it's about
getting our society to do justice to the most
vulnerable among us... the unborn, the
elderly, the disabled, the infirm, mothers and
fathers in need. It's about recognizing and
defending the unique dignity of every human
person, without exception and without
compromise.
OUR FAITH STORIES
by Shaun Kleitsch
We have been so blessed this year to be able
to hear the witnessing of so many of our
parishioners. Most recently, Doug and Mary
Crandall, Fran Luther and Brian Mueller have
shared their journeys of faith during our
monthly “Our Faith Stories”. On April 3, John
and Emma VanHerwynen will share. They
only speak for around twenty minutes, but in
that time you can be uplifted and inspired to
watch for the ways that God is working in your
life. Please watch the bulletin for future dates
and speakers.

OUR PARISH FAMILY
ST. ANN SCHOOL by Kara Roisum
Parish members helped to raise over 800
food items for the local food pantry. Students
from Grade 6 delivered the items and helped
weigh, organize, and stack the goods.
St. Ann School has been abuzz with activities
and celebrations. After a very reflective
Advent season and restful break, St. Ann
School quickly jumped into its annual Catholic
Schools Week celebration. Students marked
the occasion with numerous fun activities,
including a human “Hungry, Hungry Hippo”
competition in their Faith Families as well as
field trips to Rockin Jump in Madison and
Cascade Mountain for a day of tubing.
In addition, at their special Catholic Schools
Week Mass, St. Ann’s awarded Karin Yelk
the “Outstanding Service” Award for her
sixteen plus years at St. Ann’s.
Her
volunteerism has benefitted both the school
and parish and has included numerous
activities, such as bake and plant sales for
Journey of the Heart and World Youth Day,
serving on the Fall Festival committee,
landscaping, and watering plants, to name
just a few.
St. Ann’s is grateful for all she brings to the
school, especially her enthusiasm, kindness,
and the love she has for the students. To
close out Catholic Schools Week, the Home
and School committee hosted another
fabulous Spaghetti Dinner and Raffle Basket
celebration. The evening was filled with great
music, compliments of Second Time Around,
lots of pasta, and of course big winners in the
raffle basket drawing.
As part of the Year of Mercy Jubilee, the
students have been participating in a number
of service projects to help spread Jesus’
message of love and compassion to others.
Just before Christmas, students prepared
goodie boxes for St. Ann’s 2015 graduates as
a way to encourage them as they discern
their vocations.
In addition, 5th Grade students had the honor
of
working
once
again
with
chef
extraordinaire, Peg Koch, baking holiday
cookies for local homebound patients. In all,
more than 60 boxes were decorated, filled,
and delivered. The Middle School students
have also been reaching out to members of
the larger Madison community with visits to
the Playing Field Child Care Center for
disadvantaged families.
Finally, Grades PreK – 8, celebrated
Valentine’s Day and Lent with a Feed the
Hungry Heart campaign.

Even though there is much to finish this year,
Kara Roisum and the entire school staff are
looking toward the future. Mrs. Roisum,
along with Father Randy and Lynn Wood
(Home and School co-president) have been
attending Marketing and Development
workshops through the Diocese of Madison,
to look for ways to support our Parish mission
to grow. In addition, Mrs. Roisum has been in
contact with the Stoughton School District as
well as the Madison Area Independent Sports
League to research the possiblity of
integrating an athletic program for Grades 5-8
at St. Ann School, beginning in the 20162017 school year. Current school families
have been surveyed as well as families
whose children attend Religious Education
classes at our parish and, therefore, qualify to
participate. Finally, with plans to separate
next year’s 7th and 8th Grade classes, the
Staff is looking at curriculum and special
needs. Several options are being explored to
accommodate the growing school community.
The future at St. Ann’s is incredibly exciting
and a reflection of the Parish’s commitment to
Catholic Education. Mrs. Roisum and the
entire Staff continue to pray and thank God
each day that they belong to such a
wonderful faith community. For those who
are interested in hearing more about the
school, please contact the school office, 8733343, to schedule a tour or speak to Mrs.
Roisum. Enrollment for the 2016-2017 school
year is underway, and classes are filling up
quickly.

EL SALVADOR MISSION TRIP by Ginny Joyes
From March 11th through March 19th parish
members Mike and Michele Donahue and Bob
and Ginny Joyes will be serving as part of a
medical mission team in Ateos, El Salvador.
The weekend of February 13-14 a request was
made for financial support to purchase the
medical supplies and medicines needed to
make this kind of trip possible. The spirit of
generosity in our parish touched the
“missionaries” deeply as coins, bills, and checks
were dropped in the baskets by so many young,
old and in between. With the very generous
contributions, it was possible to purchase
supplies and medicines needed for the 2200+
people anticipated to be served by the mission
team. The entire mission team is comprised of
twenty-six people from the Madison area.

In addition to providing medical care and
medicines for those who rarely have access to
them, the purpose of the mission trip is to bring
the Gospel to our brothers and sisters and to be
living signs of God’s love. Please pray for these
representatives from our parish to be worthy
servants of God. And upon their return, the
missionaries will be eager to share their
experiences with you in an evening
presentation to the parish. Watch for the date!

DIVINE MERCY NOVENA by
Working with Dr. Mike Kloess to inventory,
gather and pack supplies
Bill Weiss
Please join in praying a nine-day Divine Mercy Novena starting on Good Friday,
March 25, and ending on Saturday, April 2, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. This Novena
will be led by parishioner Bill Weiss. With Pope Francis declaring this “Year of
Mercy”, praying this Novena can take on even more personal meaning.
What is a novena? A novena is basically nine days of prayer in a row. Jesus
taught St. Faustina a novena that he wanted her to pray and that we can all
pray. Each day, he asked that a different group of people be entrusted to him
(for example, “all sinners” on day one and “all priest and religious” on day two).
This novena can be prayed at any time during the year, but a special time to
pray it is in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday, the first Sunday after Easter.
As part of the Divine Mercy Sunday Novena, Jesus said to St. Faustina, “The
soul that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain
complete
forgiveness
of
sins
and
punishment.”
At 3:00 pm on each day, we will pray the
Chaplet of Divine Mercy. This is a prayer that
is prayed on ordinary rosary beads, and is
popular because it can be prayed in a short
amount of time (about 10 minutes). The rest
of the hour can be spent in Adoration.
Why 3:00 to 4:00 pm? That time is known as
the Hour of Great Mercy, as Jesus died on the
cross for us at 3:00 pm. Jesus said to St.
Faustina, “This is the hour of great mercy for
the whole world…I will refuse nothing to the
soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of
My Passion.” So, it’s also a great time to pray
for our loved ones, especially for the
conversion of unrepentant sinners.
Pamphlets will be provided for you to use.
Bring your rosaries. Good Friday, we will be in
the garden in the gym. The rest of the days,
we will be in Church.
Hope to see you there!
On Sunday, February 14, members of this
year’s RCIA class and their sponsors
participated in the Rite of Election at St.
John the Baptist Church in Waunakee.
Melissa Bitter, Lonnie Hoiberg, and Candy
Kline will be welcomed into full
communion with the Catholic Church at
the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. We are
excited and grateful to welcome them to
our parish family!

LET THE LIGHT OF CHRIST SHINE THROUGH US by Zoe Apel
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a
mountain cannot be hidden… Just so, your
light must shine before others, that they may
see your good deeds and glorify your
heavenly Father.”
-Matthew 5: 14, 16
We are all called to let the light of Christ
shine through us. This year, the high school
students at St. Ann parish have been
learning to do just that. Through peer faithsharing, activities, and prayer, the City on a
Hill high school youth group aims to create a
family that is journeying toward Christ
together while having a ton of fun!
With the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, City on
a Hill youth group was created this year.
The youth group is led by a core team of high
school seniors and other young people, who
plan events and activities for the parish.
After attending youth events and retreats
throughout the diocese, several teens had
entertained the idea of bringing the joy and
community they had found at these events
back to their friends in the parish. “City” as it
is affectionately called, is open to high-school
age teens, who desire to grow closer to other
teens in the parish, get to know each other
through awesome activities and journey
together in faith.
This year City has already held a number of
events. Beginning with several inspirational
faith stories shared by fellow high school
students, it grew to include an exciting
evening of outdoor games, bonfire and
s’mores, and a board game night filled with
happy winners and lots of laughter.
FRASSATI FEST - THE FAITHFUL FIESTA
Mark your calendars! In the upcoming months
City on a Hill will be hosting more events for
the high schoolers of our parish. There are
two events in particular that present new and
exciting opportunities. On April 17th, City is
excited to invite several local religious sisters
to lead a time of singing and meditation, which
the whole parish is welcome to attend. We
invite all high schoolers to join us afterwards
for pizza and to get to know the outrageously
funny and beautiful sisters. On April 30th, we
will serve a meal at the Catholic Multicultural
Center for those in need in the Madison area.
Keep an eye out for posters and more
information on upcoming events. Follow us on

Frassati Fest was like a faith explosion. All around me stood excited teenagers with fires in
their hearts for God. I was one of the few lucky teens from St. Ann’s to get to experience this
faithful fiesta. Wow, am I glad I went! I was shocked to see young people so immersed in
God’s love and I realized that I saw God through those people. We danced crazily, sang
passionately, and connected spiritually. Kids poured out their hearts in inspiring testimonies,
keynote speakers delivered powerful messages, and I left feeling lighter than I have in a
while.
This unique faith retreat is a weekend that will definitely rekindle your spiritual fire. You will
make new friends, get inspired, and have some fun getting soaked at the water park. This
past weekend was more than just a confirmation retreat. It marked the creation of many
precious memories. I was not the only high schooler who enjoyed this retreat. Selina Schultz
passionately declared, “Frassati Fest was an amazing and fulfilling weekend full of people,
full of love and happiness toward each other and their faith. I would definitely recommend it
to anyone thinking about it.” So what are you waiting for? Register for Frassati Fest 2017!
CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES by Cathie Truehl
These teens are preparing to be confirmed this Spring. They have been
attending classes, going on retreat, meeting with their sponsors and performing
service work. Please keep them in your prayers as they complete their
preparations to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of
Confirmation.
TRAIN
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful and create in them a new life as
You renew the face of the earth. Gracious and Loving God, send your Spirit.
Empower these candidates with your gifts so that we might know You through
their words and service.
As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they
will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even
the love of your life. Many will step down and leave a
permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we
don't realize they vacated their seats. This train ride will be
full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes,
and farewells. Success consists of having a good
relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the
best of ourselves.
Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit, teach them to know the faith of the
Roman Catholic Church, to live by what is right and just, and to always rejoice in
their faith in You. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

At birth we boarded the train and met our parents, and we
believe they will always travel on our side. However, at
some station our parents will step down from the train,
leaving us on this journey alone.
The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which
station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the
best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It
is important to do this because when the time comes for us
to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave
behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to
travel on the train of life.
