Message
Instead of the red, white, and blue Montreal Canadiens
sweater, Monsieur Eaton had sent us a blue and white
sweater with a maple leaf on the front - the sweater of
the Toronto Maple Leafs. I'd always worn the red, white,
and blue Montreal Canadiens sweater; all my friends
wore the red, white, and blue sweater; never had anyone
in my village ever worn the Toronto sweater, never had
we even seen a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater. Besides,
the Toronto team was regularly trounced by the triumphant Canadiens. With tears in my eyes, I found the
strength to say:
"I'll never wear that uniform."

always what you expect, but there’s nothing that can
stir one’s feelings like love.
Looking around our neighborhood, whether it be on
the slopes of the hill by the car wash and kids speeding down on their sleds of fury, on the ice of Lake
Chaparral with kids wearing their Iginla or Crosby jerseys scoring that Game 7 goal, or folks walking their
dog down the ravine into the Valley with every new
person or stick just another excuse for an adventure,
you can see the love in our neighborhood.
I love Chaparral. But it’s not the roads or the parks or
the buildings or the lake or the location that I love.
I love it because it’s home to my family, because my
family is happy here, and because there’s nothing I
love more than my family. I love when I can watch my
son play hockey on the lake with my dad. I love when
I can help teach my daughter to skate on the upper
rink. I love watching my son and his friends come
home from playing their own (non-lethal) version of
the Hunger Games in the parks, telling stories of survival and crazy escapes. And I love being able to go for
walks with my wife to go grab a coffee or tea at Tim’s
or Starbucks, or just walk on the back paths in spring
to smell the bloom of the lilacs and rarely if ever give
a thought as to whether doing so is safe.
I am lucky and grateful for the life I lead and the family I love. I’m lucky because, even though I’ve worked
hard, I’ve had people who have chanced into my life
and made it better every step of the way. Friends,
teachers, teammates, bosses, classmates, workmates,
coaches, and quite literally thousands of others have
all played a role in helping me get to this point, but
I’ve been lucky to have one person in particular who
has helped me end up with this charmed life, and I
love her for it. Her eyes may be nothing like the sun,
but I think my love for her is as rare as any she belied
with false compare.
May all twenty-eight days of February bring you joy,
and Happy St. Valentine’s Day to all.

Community Cleanup and Recycling Day. Community
clean-ups are made possible through a partnership with
Calgary community associations, Animal & Bylaw Services, and Waste & Recycling Services. Community organizations are responsible for ensuring that volunteer
resources are in place, advertisements clearly outline
the materials that are accepted by Waste & Recycling
Services, and that the event runs smoothly. If you are
interested in coordinating or lending a helping hand in
the planning of another great community event contact

Earls Restaurant is opening a new location in February
at Shepard Flats off 130th Avenue. The management has
invited the Chaparral Community Association members
to attend free dinner seatings and provide feedback or

How to Get a
Gardening Education
Hello neighbours!
It might be the middle of winter, but we at Chaparral
Green Thumbs are busy getting ready for spring and
opening the garden again. After lengthy discussions we
have decided to postpone the start of phase two, which
was initially planned for spring of 2013. The creation
of the garden was a lengthy process, involving a lot of
fundraising, planning, and just plain hard work, and the
committee has decided that we need a year to recharge
our batteries and to have a bit more time to see how our
garden is functioning as it is. We have had some drainage issues, so we would like to fix that and spend the
year improving our current garden, before we expand.
If you had been hoping to be a part of phase two, feel

and we will put you on a waiting list. While most of our
gardeners are coming back again in the spring of 2013,
lives change, and a few plots may be available for this
spring.
Since we are not jumping in to construction mode, the
committee has decided to work on one of our other
goals, education. Working closely with the Calgary Horticultural Society, we are planning to host two gardening talks to help educate and inspire both our group
members and anyone else in the community interested
in gardening. We are still finalizing the details for our

talks, but the dates we are working with are March 7th
and April 11th, so mark you calendar and keep an eye
on our website for the venue and topics.
As well as our talks, there are a number of events already
scheduled for the gardening enthusiasts of Calgary. Additional information for upcoming talks can be found

Location: Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre
Come out to this family event to buy, sell, or trade seeds
and gain valuable gardening knowledge. Last year, for
the small fee of $2, participants were able peruse the
wares of numerous vendors and sit in on a number of
presentations.

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon (Hours may be reduced if
weather is poor)
Location: On the grassy field west of the Horticultural

This is a member only event (memberships can be
bought on site) where members can share excess plant
material and information with other members. Novices
like me, with nothing to share, can also purchase plants
for $2.

The Chaparral Community Association has been working hard to cover all the views, opinions, and concerns
for all matters pertaining to Lake Chaparral, Chaparral Ridge, and Chaparral Valley outside of the Lake
facility (we have nothing to do with Lake operations). We meet on a monthly basis at Lake Chaparral Boat House to
address a progressive agenda.
The cost of membership is $20.00 for one year. Without the value of the Community Association, we would
not be able to keep you informed of important events and factors affecting our community as a whole. Please

Scouts program. Beaver Scouts opens the door for your

Granola Bars
makes 12 bars
Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
• 2 cups oats, divided
• 1 tsp. cinnamon
• 1-1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
• 1/4 tsp. salt
• 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
• 1/3 cup agave nectar
• 3 tbsp. maple syrup
• 1 tsp. vanilla
•1/3 cup almonds, roughly chopped
• 1/3 cup cacao nibs (can sub chocolate chips)
• 1/3 cup dried cranberries

“Paper Love Bug”
What you’ll need:
Empty toilet paper tube
Pink paper
Scissors
Glue
Pipe cleaners
Pen, maker, crayons, or pencil
How To Make It:
•Paint or cover an empty toilet tube with pink paper to
make the body of the bug.
•Cut two hearts from construction paper.
•Attach these with tape or glue on either side of the
body.
•Encourage your child to draw a face on the top of the
tube. Pipe cleaners make great antennae.
•Write a cute message on the wings such as “Valentine,
you make my heart flutter.”
Directions: Start by placing 1/2 cup of your oats
into a mini food processor. Process until oats have
reached a flour-like consistency. In a large mixing
bowl, combine the remaining 1-1/2 cup oats, 1/2
cup oat flour, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1-1/2 tsp. pumpkin
pie spice, and 1/4 tsp. salt. Toss the ingredients until
all are well incorporated. In another mixing bowl,
combine 2/3 cup pumpkin puree, 1/3 cup agave
nectar, 3 tbsp. maple syrup, and 1 tsp. vanilla. Whisk
until smooth and add to dry ingredients. Stir until
dry ingredients are mixed into the wet ingredients.
Then, carefully fold in your cacao nibs, almonds, and
dried cranberries. Grease a 9×9 pan and transfer the
granola bar mixture into the pan. Using your hands,
press the granola mixture into the pan so it is even.
Bake in a 300 degree** oven for 20 minutes. Let cool
completely before cutting into 12 bars.
**For a crisper bar, try raising the oven to 325
degrees.

the park unless accompanied by a person over the age
of 12.

inform staff at entry gate of the number of guests accompanying them in to the park.
•Adult members are permitted 6 guests.
•Residents age 12-16 may bring 2 guests.

The start of 2013 was a good one for St. Bonaventure
Jr. High School. The basketball season began and is
now going strong. All of our teams are working hard
to perfect their skills. We are looking forward to hosting the annual “Falcons Invitational” basketball tournament from Feb. 21–23. Both of our senior teams will
be playing and there will be plenty of exciting basketball to watch!
Groups larger than 16 guests would be considered a
“large group”. A large group is only permitted into the
park upon completion of a Large Group booking form,
approval of park staff and payment of an additional user
fee. Information is available at the Recreation Centre office. The park has a ceiling on the total numbers of “large
groups” permitted in the park on a single day.
Lake Chaparral members will assume full responsibility
for their guests' actions at all times when participating
in the lake/park facility. Please make sure they are aware
of park rules.
Tobogganing
Tobogganing is only permitted on designated area on
hill just left of the front waterfall. This is marked by signs
and outlined by lights after dark.
This area is where there is the least amount of risk. Anyone caught tobogganing anywhere else on the hill will
have their privileges revoked. Safety is the top priority.
No building jumps anywhere on the hill
Tobogganing is an unsupervised activity and is done at
your own risk. Helmets are recommended and parent supervision is advised.
Skating
The upper rink with fire pit and pathways on lake ice are
for pleasure skating only, not hockey. Pucks and hockey
sticks are not permitted on upper rink.
There are three hockey rinks on the lake ice. Hockey and
ringette can only be played on these rinks.
No one will be allowed on the lake ice until the Centre
has determined the ice is a safe thickness and the DANGER THIN ICE signs have been taken down. For your own
safety please respect the rules and the Safety Flag Warn18
During the third week of January, Meaghan Buisson,
from “BodyWhys” presented to our Grade 9 students
about eating disorders and the benefits of a healthy
life style. Meaghan also did an evening presentation
for parents from the surrounding communities.
February will provide our staff with many opportunities for professional development. Feb. 1 is a PD Day
for our staff and the students will have the day off.
Then Feb. 14 and 15 is the annual Teachers’ Convention. Teachers will be attending a large variety of PD
opportunities at various venues throughout the city.
Students will be enjoying a well-deserved break with
a five-day weekend, as Monday Feb. 18 is Family Day.
Also in February we will be having our annual Shrove
Tuesday Pancake Breakfast for our entire school community. Parents and teachers will begin preparing
pancakes very early in the day so that our students
and parents can enjoy a warm stack of pancakes
when they arrive to school. The following day is Ash
Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Lenten
season. We will be celebrating mass together with St.
Boniface Elementary at St. Bonaventure Church, at
9:45am on Feb. 13. All parents are welcome to join us.

be $50 per player.

Musings from a life-long educator
“A Child’s Winter Boots”
to get the boots back on, this time on the correct feet.
He then announced, ‘These aren’t my boots!’
If you have ever watched a Kindergarten class get
dressed for recess or for going home you will understand why one must have the patience of Job. Here is
one typical situation with the teacher and one of her
young pupils.
She bit her tongue, and once again she struggled to
help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet.
At the end of a long day a teacher was helping one of
her young class pupils put on his boots. He asked for
help and she could see why. Even with her pulling and
him pushing, the little boots still didn’t want to go on.
Now she didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. But she
mustered up what grace and courage she had left to
wrestle the boots on his feet again.
By the time they got the second boot on, she had
worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy
said, ‘Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet!’
She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn’t any
easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on.
She managed to keep her cool as, together they worked
No sooner had they got the boots off when he said,
‘They’re my brother’s boots, my Mum made me
wear’em.’
Helping him into his coat, she asked, ‘Now, where are
your mittens?’ He said, ‘I stuffed’em in the toes of my
boots!’

What is the difference between the Chaparral
Community Association (CCA) and the
Chaparral Residents Association (CRA)?
The Chaparral Community Association is a volunteer run
organization that represents the residents of Lake Chaparral, Chaparral Ridge and Chaparral Valley.
Your Community Association is the recognized body that
liaises with government officials, expresses resident concerns regarding commercial, industrial and residential land
use development and represents the position of residents
on education, transportation, environmental and infrastructure issues.
The CCA supports organized sports, community programs
and social programs. The CCA supports and publishes the
community publication The Trailblazer to help keep you better informed. For inquires please see the list of CCA volunteers

Membership is a voluntary $20 per year.
The Chaparral Residents Association is the association
that governs the private membership of Lake Chaparral and
its facilities. Each home within the Lake Chaparral community is encumbered to pay an annual membership due to
the CRA. The annual dues are utilized for the day to day
operations of the lake property and all of its facilities, the
maintenance of entryway features of the community, maintaining an appropriate reserve fund and making long term
planning decisions for the lake and its assets. The CRA’s employs a facility director, Nancy Connors, under the direction
of a volunteer Board of Directors.

RV Parking Tips
For winter campers or those lucky enough to be traveling
somewhere warm to avoid Calgary’s weather, here are a
few reminders when parking your RVs:
Under the Calgary Traffic Bylaw 26M96:
•RVs registered to a City of Calgary address can be parked
on the street, directly adjoining the owner’s residence,
for up to 36 consecutive hours.
•After 36 hours, the RV must be moved to an off-street
location for at least 48 consecutive hours before being
parked again on the street adjoining the owner’s or operator’s residence.
•While parked on the street, RVs should be parked in a
manner that is safe and does not constitute a hazard for
anyone using the street.

With the holidays now long behind us, February can be
a slow time of year. However, this is actually one of the
busiest times for MLAs, as we head to Edmonton for
the spring session of the legislature and budget estimate debates.
During this session, I am looking forward to all the opportunities I will have to debate legislation that will
affect Calgary-South East, and to advocate for the priorities you have shared with me over the past year, including new schools and local transportation issues.
As a new MLA, I have worked hard to ensure that your
voices are heard at the government table, and am happy
to report I have met with some good results. In the fall
session, my motion urging government to build schools
in partnership with other stakeholders, so that the facilities may contain services such as libraries and daycares, passed unanimously in the House. I was pleased
to see that all of the other MLAs agreed we must look at
innovative new ways to meet the needs of our communities and our families.
I am proud of all our government has achieved over the
past 41 years and I look forward to making the next four
years just as productive and fruitful for Albertans.

After the frantic months of December and January, February might seem bland. But this couldn’t be further

watch the Super Bowl, or sit down to a Valentine’s Day

This upgraded version of the Ward 14 Aldermanic site is
much more comprehensive than its predecessor, and I
still have a few tricks up my sleeve for the future. Along
with a ton of information on Aldertalk, Ward 14 communities, and yours truly, there will be constantly updated
posts consisting of everything from these monthly newsletter columns, to Notices of Motion, to urgent news. The

to find things using the search tool. I hope you find the
content of this new website useful.
I’ve mentioned the Lake Fraser Gate Pilot Project in the
past. It was a trial run of some restrictions on left turn signals at the intersection of MacLeod Trail and Lake Fraser
Gate S.E. There are about 4800 vehicles/hour that pass this
intersection during the morning rush hour, and the project was an attempt to alleviate some of this congestion.
By the time you read this, your opportunity to give feedback on this pilot project via the 3-1-1 call centre will
likely be over, but I encourage you to contact me if you
have any other feedback to share. So far, the comments
have been mostly positive with regards to the changes
made at the intersection, but it is of critical importance
that we have all the information possible in the decision
making process, because ideas such as these have the
potential to very inexpensively alleviate traffic woes all
around Calgary.
The Lake Fraser Gate Pilot Project illustrates the most cost
effective option to reducing commute times that the City
has in its arsenal. The turn lane restrictions cost roughly
$30,000, in comparison to the roughly $30 million cost of
an interchange. It’s a promising solution at 1% of the cost
of an interchange with much less construction headache.
Obviously, I would love to take the idea and roll with it,
but as I mentioned before – the more feedback the better. Thank you to everyone who has already given their
input, and special thanks to the businesses of Lake Fraser
Drive for their patience and understanding.

École Blessed Mother Teresa
École Blessed Mother Teresa is a vibrant Catholic French
Immersion elementary school serving the communities
south of Fish Creek, east to the Bow River, and west to
the city limits. Our students are actively engaged in the
French language and culture.
January is always a month of beginings and we had
many new experiences to share. Our grade 5’s and 6’s
were at the climbing centre for two days achieving
brave new heights. Our chess club started up on January 11th and will be playing till March when they will
wind up with a tournament. We had presentations by
Canadian Musical Theatre and Music Alive; who taught
us all a lot about Mozart’s music. At the end of January
we had our annual Family Movie night and along with it
for the first time a Silent Auction, there were some great
items to bid on and we hope you went home with one
of them!
In February we are really looking forward to celebrating
and exploring our French culture with two days of Carnaval celebrations on February 7th and 8th.

By exerting muscles through weight-bearing exercise,
the ligaments and tendons that attach muscle to bone
and muscle to muscle will impose a good “stress” to our
bone structure. Since our bodies are designed in such a
manor that we must “break it down” in order to “ build
it up”, weight bearing exercises aid in increasing bone
density. When you perform exercises, you are also fostering balance and coordination. The psychological and
physical gains enable people to enjoy further activity.

Optimal Bone Health

Maintaining strength and vitality does not have to
come at a cost. We don’t have to reach for the next
over priced supplement to preserve stability and bone
health.
Osteoporosis is a disorder that does not discriminate
although it is most commonly associated with older
adults, postmenopausal women, and those with a history of long-term steroidal use. The pathology describes
bones becoming brittle and porous; therefore lacking
strength and making them subject to fracture more
easily.
Although peak bone mass is reached between the ages
of 25-30, maintaining optimal bone density through
education is also required to minimize further deterioration. Calcium and Vitamin D are well known contributors in upholding bone integrity, however, many discard
exercise as a form of building or maintenance due to the
fear of physical impact and fracture.

Calcium also plays an important role in muscle contraction, adding to our bone health. It is a mineral mostly
stored in our bones and released when our bodies
do not have enough from our daily nutritional needs,
thereby decreasing bone density. Rich sources of calcium include cheese, milk, yogurt, which may be more
difficult to obtain for those who are lactose intolerant
or vegetarians. In order to maintain adequate calcium
levels, our bodies require vitamin D to aid in absorption.
Researchers at the University if Arizona determined we
can get enough Vitamin D from just 10-15 minutes of
sunlight per day, although best guaranteed from a daily
multi vitamin.
From low impact to more advanced weight baring exercises, many individuals can incorporate several bone
building activities throughout any given day.
While it is essential to recognize the importance of lifestyle on bone health, other factors such as genetics,
race, or gender cannot be overlooked in their sizeable
roles in developing osteoporosis. It is valuable to seek
the help of a qualified professional if you are unfamiliar
with the mechanics of any exercise.

salmon packets
These puffed packets are a fun way to incorporate more fish into
your diet.
6 18-inch square (approx.) pieces baking parchment
1 ½ lb salmon fillet, cut into 6 equal pieces
1 orange pepper, cut into thin julienne
1 yellow pepper, cut into thin julienne
6 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
6 tablespoons dry white wine
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 lime, sliced into 6 thin pieces
12 sprigs of fresh dill
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
CULINARY FILE: salmon
Fold parchment paper in half and cut into half heart-shaped pieces
using the full width of the paper. Do not cut the folded edge.
Rinse salmon pieces under cold running water and pat dry with
paper towels. Place each piece of salmon skin side down, on one
half of the parchment hearts. *If you use skinned salmon, lightly
oil one half of the parchment paper with vegetable oil.
Whisk wine and lemon juice together in a small bowl and pour
two tablespoons over each piece of salmon. Drizzle each with the
melted butter, and season with salt and pepper. Top each salmon
piece with a lime slice, the julienned vegetables and two sprigs of
fresh dill.
Fold the other half of the parchment heart over the fish and
tightly seal by making a series of tight overlapping folds all around
the open edge. (This is a little tricky at first, but it becomes easier,
when you can actually see how tightly the folds are holding.) Place
salmon packets on a baking sheet and bake until the packets are
puffed up – approximately 10 – 15 minutes.
Make sure the rest of your meal is ready to be served, and quickly
transfer the salmon packets to individual plates and cut open with
a sharp knife to reveal a steaming hot main course.
