We continue to research our collection of over 200 tintype photos of Cambria residents dating around the 1870’s. Above are photos of three more of
the unknowns.
If you recognize one of them or just suspect that you recognize one, give
me a call. This gives us a clue to help in our search.
We will continue to display two or three photos each newsletter and invite
you to help us find a name for them.

Who was the Museum’s
20,000th Visitor?
Heirloom Garden News
David Kizler celebrated at the Cambria Historical
Museum with wife Layne and mother-in-law Dolores
Gasbarra during a special Open House on Independence Day. Honored as "Mr. 20K" by members of the
Board of Directors as soon as he signed the guestbook, he was recognized as the 20,000 visitor to the
museum since its inception in December, 2008. Kizler
was awarded a Commemorative Brick, an honorary
membership, and gift certificates from Red Moose
Cookie Company and Allocco Bakery

from Cambria Union High School’s Horticultural class shared the space in the back garden on
May 19 for a plant sale. Students and museum
garden docents had a successful day with visitors
and Cambria Garden Tour participants purchasing many plants and outdoor items. It was a true
team effort!
Spotlight on Education
The Cambria Historical Society awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Coast Union
High School senior, Luis Gonzales, in May. Luis was the Senior Class President and he plans to attend UC Irvine to study biology and psychology. He
would like to become an optical surgeon.
Our goal is to award two scholarships next year. We will be collecting donations for the Youth Education Fund at the Harvest Festival and throughout the
year, which will help provide scholarships and support other activities that promote Cambria history education for our community’s youth.
The third and fourth grade students at Cambria Grammar School brightened up the display room in June
with their dioramas depicting the life of the Chumash (3rd grade), and life during the California Gold
Rush (4th grade). Thanks to the following students for allowing us to present their artwork. 3rd Graders: Phoebe, Sophia, Diego H., Andre, Will-Burton-Linn, Michelle, Heidi Figueroa, Viviana Nunez,
Jasmine, Crystal F.
4th Graders: Rodrigo Ayala, Spencer
Magnuson (Mining Town), Alendra
Mercado and Nate Markham
(Legendary Thief), Ivan Arellano and
RileyVolz (Routes to California), Carlos Guizar and Angelina Perez (Levi
Strauss).

Richard (Dick) Quincy, native of Idaho, is the last
remaining survivor of the Montebello, which was
torpedoed off the Cambria Coast in December,
1941. Our display prompted memories of when he
was serving as an “ordinary” seaman aboard the
Union oil tanker. He was on the lookout and spotted
the sub and within an hour he made it from the
bridge to the lifeboat as the ship was sinking, while
being shot at 9 times. He continued his service in
the Merchant Marines rising to the rank of 2nd
mate. He currently lives in Danville, California.
