Welcome

Calendar
spring 2013
so, what’s new?
Funny you should ask: it’s a New Year; we’re presenting
lots of new work and new ideas and we hope you’ll
enjoy discovering them with us.
The first University of Surrey New Writers’ Festival takes
place on 15 and 16 March. Exploring Lewis Carroll and
his relationship with Guildford via workshops, cabaret,
panel discussions, interactive tours and competitions,
established writers and aspiring authors, playwrights
and songwriters will find something fascinating and
inspiring.
There’s new thinking about how and why artists
work together from The Weak Force, an international
collaboration between artists Matthew Sansom (UK),
Andy Thomson (NZ), Paul Cullen (NZ), Laresa Kosloff
(Aus), Bruce Barber (Can), and Kim Morgan (Can) in the
Lewis Elton Gallery as part of the Guildford International
Music Festival.
The Festival springs into life in March bringing new
artists and programmes, as well as returning Festival
friends, to the University and to venues around
Guildford. Look out for performances in heritage spaces;
a music documentary film series; new dance works
- Weightless, celebrating choreographer Yael Flexer’s
20th anniversary and The Protocol Project, which invites
the audience to try out digital effects; Guitar Greats,
with John Wiliams, Craig Ogden and friends; and the
high-energy drummers of The Dhol Foundation. There’s
plenty of opportunity to find something new to enjoy.
Award-winning dance also comes from Theo Clinkard
and Joe Moran in a double bill Ordinary Courage and
Obverse, plus Theo’s short film, To Leap or Skip in an
Emotional Manner (6 February). In these pages you’ll find performances by Guildford
School of Acting; dance, theatre studies and music
students; professional performances; exhibitions,
lectures and festivals, often in conjunction with
local and professional partners, created by university
academic staff, students and our peers. Some events
may still be in the planning stages; some of them
take place in venues around Guildford as well as on
campus. Whatever they are, we know you’ll find it an
entertaining experience.
Why not make your New Year’s resolution to try
something new with us?

Actual Size is a student led dance
company, working with professional
dance artists and developing their
own work. In the past the company
has worked with artists including
Luke Birch, Annie Lok, Karen Da
Silva and most recently Rosie
Heafford (Second Hand Dance).
Actual Size has also been fortunate
enough to tour work and perform
at dance platforms such as Dancin’
Oxford in 2010.
This year Actual Size, co-directed
by Victoria Giles and Rachel Gildea,
presents a diverse programme of
work made by visiting artists and
the students themselves.
Founded in 2005 by Surrey
Dance students, the company
continues to serve as a forum
for students to explore movement

New work by two exciting dance artists:
OBVERSE
by Joe Moran
Commissioned for The Place Prize for dance sponsored by Bloomberg,
Obverse by Joe Moran is a complex, detailed and choreographically intricate
new trio that tests the remarkable virtuosity of its dancers to visibly transform
their state of being, from moment to moment, in both body and thinking
Commissioned in 2012 Obverse pursues formalism in choreography to liberate
the poetics and immediacy of dance.
ORDINARY COURAGE
by Theo Clinkard
Wed 20 Mar, 19.30
“We are defined by how well we rise after falling”
Flexer and Sandiland
Theo Clinkard’s rousing new group work for six dancers and live piano
brims with visceral and eloquent physicality.
Ordinary Courage follows a community in repair and harnesses the capacity
for movement and touch to communicate when words are not enough.
A luminous room lit by Zerlina Hughes and an original score by Alan Stones
that incorporates Scarlatti and Bach provide the canvas for breathtaking
performances. Clinkard completes an international, seven-strong cast
drawn from the likes of Random Dance, Akram Khan, Richard Alston,
Siobhan Davies, Sydney Dance Company and Australian Dance Theatre.

WEIGHTLESS
Electric Theatre
T: 01483 444789
Weightless is a new work celebrating Yael Flexer’s 20th
anniversary as a choreographer. Engaging, thoughtful,
but with a cheeky wink, this show carries Yael’s
trademark witty text and humour combined with fastpaced, space-hungry movement and a driving musical
score by Israeli cellist Karni Postel.
Weightless features an exciting digital element with
radio-controlled floating objects drifting through
the auditorium and a multiplicity of sound objects;
disembodied voices immersing both audience and
performers.
Tickets: £15, £12 senior citizens, University staff
£5 students, concessions
Weightless playfully references its own historical
position. It questions the ‘weight’ of history, both
personal and aesthetic: what is it that roots us down
physically and emotionally? What might it feel like to
let go or take flight?
As the cast of international performers attempt to
‘get on with the show,’ their meaningful glances,
mutual teasing and asides to the audience subvert
the choreography and unsettle their choreographer
- who desperately tries to keep things under control
from the wings.

LIKE SUGAR IN MILK: STORIES OF
ZOROASTRIAN MIGRATION TO THE
SOUTH COAST OF ENGLAND
BandBazi
Laugh or frown, giggle or flinch, you are sure to have something
to say about Mark Michael’s art.
John Hayes, The Art Café & Jewry St. Gallery, Winchester
Satirist Mark Michael studied at Winchester School of Art and achieved
First Class Honours in Fine Art. The Society of Fickle Fingers comments
on how mobile technology, internet and instant messaging have
influenced the new ‘Me generation.’ He says “It’s important for me
not to censor my thoughts; I love the reactions and happenings that
I see everywhere from books, movies, television, the bludgeoning of
advertising and excessive fear from the media. The digital age seems to
have isolated and insulated us, forcing us to change.”
Like Sugar in Milk is a Heritage Lottery funded oral history
and photographic exhibition.
It marks the culmination of an 18 month project involving
over twenty volunteers. Volunteer ‘memory collectors’ from
Sussex and Surrey have captured the migration stories of
twelve Zoroastrian Elders from the wider South East region.
The project has been guided by a Steering Group made up
of members and leaders of Zoroastrian organisations.
Bandbazi are proud to present these captivating and
poignant stories to venues across the South East.

Artist-In-Residence
Roger Dellar ROI RI PS
This is the fifth occasion Roger has been Artist-InResidence at the biennial Guildford International Music
Festival. He says “Each time I enjoy the challenge of
getting the sense of the music, the movement, and
drama of lighting, all during the period of the recital.
Sometimes I don’t know the outcome until the painting
can be seen in better lighting. I’m aware that I must be
inconspicuous as the musicians and audience must not
be distracted.”
As an educator, Roger is always happy to talk about his
work during the interval or after a performance.

The Weak Force is an international collaboration
between artists Matthew Sansom (UK), Andy Thomson

gravitational theory, the 100th anniversary of Luigi
Russolo’s manifesto The Art of Noises, and questions

CAPTURING THE EPHEMERAL
Bobbie Bale
Bobbie Bale’s colourful abstract expressionist
paintings are inspired by her wild garden.
She explains that the seeds for the ideas had
been germinating for some time when a
particular experience galvanised her into action.
After walking through wet grass, she turned
back to see the silver pathway made by her
footsteps emerge and, just as quickly disappear.
The experience became a metaphor for the
beautiful moment, change and memory.
Bobbie says “I have been particularly
influenced by the fragility and edginess of
work by Eva Hesse and Anya Gallacio,
the poets Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman”.
There will be an opportunity to view sketch
books showing how the work has evolved and
listen to poetry readings recorded by the GSA
students.

This series brings together four
extraordinary films about a broad
range of artists who share a
common goal: the right sound for
their music. Sometimes this was
done by fusing unrelated existing
sounds to create entirely new
genres (Ray Charles or Jimmy Page),
sometimes by bringing highly
traditional sounds into the present
(Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch or
Jack White); sometimes by endlessly
searching for the right sound for
a simple part (U2’s The Edge);
or sometimes combining all of the
above (producer Tom Dowd). This
series draws from the research of
University of Surrey popular music
scholar Tim Hughes, who will give
a short introductory talk before
each screening, and will be
available after the screenings to
engage in more relaxed discussions
at the bar.

Angela Conner’s sculptures harness the natural forces of our environment
using elements such as water and wind to move and unfold their abstract
forms. She has captured this energy in a staggering array of materials
including clay, steel and glass. The breadth of her sculpture moves easily
from figurative to modern kinetic art.
Unburdened by formal art training, she followed a creative path that led
her to work for Barbara Hepworth. Encouraged by work there, she set up
her studio in London and has been based there since.
Her work is represented internationally in many public and private
collections, including that of the Royal Family. Her 126ft sculpture
Wave in Ireland won the Kinetic Art International Organisation’s First
Prize and is the tallest mobile in Europe.

The Making of
the Extraordinary
Dr Peter Lamont, University of Edinburgh
Ivy Arts Centre
Admission free
Magicians, mesmerists, mediums and psychics performed
extraordinary feats for centuries. In the process, they have
provoked some extraordinary beliefs. But how does one make
an extraordinary feat happen? How does one make it seem truly
extraordinary? And what have people made of this? Peter Lamont
provides a brief glimpse into how magicians have faked the
impossible, how psychics have made it seem real, and how people
continue to come to the conclusions that they do.

This setting of biblical texts, rather than the usual Latin Requiem text,

grand and powerfully dramatic climaxes.

Tickets: £10, £5 students and concessions
“Byron’s always absorbing music genuinely draws in the disparate
elements of African and Eastern cultures, while retaining true jazz
spirit …”
Byron Wallen is “one of the most innovative, exciting and original trumpet
players alive” (Jazzwise Magazine). Widely recognised as a seminal figure
in world jazz, he is constantly travelling the world recording, teaching and
performing.
Byron was raised in a musical environment and started learning his first
instrument, the piano, at an early age. He then went on to study the
trumpet with Jimmy Owens, Donald Byrd and Jon Faddis in New York.
His early music career was forged while he was studying for a degree
in Psychology, Philosophy and Maths at Sussex University (he graduated
in 1992). Byron has been working on jazz improvisation, composition
and performance with Music students for several months. This concert
is the culmination of this mini-project which will showcase the ideas
they have been developing together. Byron and the band will play
a set based on compositions by Surrey students, all of which will be
interpreted through improvisation.

Hymn to St Cecilia, Op 27 (Words by W H Auden)
Stravinsky Mass
Music by Bach and Purcell
The University of Surrey’s Chamber Choir and Orchestra return to the URC
Music Series with a programme of music to nurture the soul. Britten’s setting
of Auden’s poem was written at the same time as his Ceremony of Carols, and
shares the same wonderful music effects. The Hymn contrasts with the austere
beauty of Stravinsky’s Mass and the extreme purity of Bach and Purcell.
This concert is one of the opening events of the 2013 Guildford International

QUATTRO MANI competiton
PATS Studio One
Admission Free
The Quattro Mani Competition
for piano duet playing was established
in 2010 with the generosity of concert
pianist Maureen Galea. Maureen was
our first PhD performance, and is now
a well-established piano tutor at the
University and locally. The aims of the
Competition are to encourage the
exploration of an under-played, but
rather wonderful, area of the piano
repertoire, while developing
the team-working and collaborative
skills for which performing musicians
are renowned. If the first Competition
is anything to go by, we anticipate a
high standard of entry from students.
We are thrilled to welcome the pianist,
Benjamin Frith, to Surrey to judge
this event.
There is also a chance to see Maureen
in action during the Piano Day, which
closes the 2013 Guildford International
Music Festival, when she will give a
piano duet concert with her University
colleague, Margaret Roberts.

PRESENTATIONS
PATS Dance Studio
Admission Free
This will be the 25th annual celebration of collaboration and creative
work presented by students from Dance, Music and Sound Recording.
The students come together over an intensive weekend of non-stop
activity, which tests their inventiveness and creativity. Choreographers
and composers are paired together and discuss their ideas which are
then shared with the dancers and musicians; collectively they devise
and present the emerging pieces which have evolved over the weekend.
There is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and to gain an
insight into this fascinating creative process. Be prepared for dancers
playing, and musicians dancing!

Winner of 6 Olivier Awards, this musical satirizes America’s trash
TV culture taking a raucously irreverent look at religion, sexuality
and popular culture. Based on the notorious TV talk show of the
same name, this musical is an audacious and scandalous, yet
ultimately moral and challenging show that’s recommended to
anyone who can accept the odd dose of outrage in their lives.

A modern day musical theatre addict
known simply as ‘Man in Chair’ drops the
needle on his favourite LP. From the crackle
of his hi-fi, the uproariously funny 1928
musical magically bursts to life on stage,
telling the tale of a pampered Broadway
starlet who wants to give up show business
to get married, His infectious love of The
Drowsy Chaperone speaks to anyone who
has ever been transported by the theatre.
Fans of the Broadway songwriting duo Fred Ebb and John Kander
won’t want to miss The World Goes Round, an engaging musical revue
embracing musicals from Chicago to Funny Girl, from New York, New York
to Kiss of the Spiderwoman. GSA brings you the best of this important
Broadway song-writing team in an evening of music offering a seamless,
uninterrupted roller-coaster ride from beginning to end.
Rouses theatre-goers to their feet with its infectious tunes....

Edited by Richard Norton-Taylor
An amateur production by arrangement with Samuel French Ltd and Oberon Books
Director
Trevor Rawlins
The Ivy Studio
Tickets £10, £9 Concessions
Legendary songwriting duo Leiber and Stoller
virtually invented rock ‘n’ roll and their songs provide
the basis for an electrifying entertainment that
illuminates a golden age of American culture, in an
idealised 50s setting. Classic themes of love won,
lost and imagined blend with hilarious set-pieces
and slice-of-life emotions. Not just pop music but
compelling musical theatre!
Five time Tony Award nominated and Grammy
Award winning Broadway musical
The Ivy Arts Centre
Tickets £10, £9 Concessions
This dramatic reconstruction, based on the transcripts of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry,
was originally produced at the Tricycle Theatre in London. Black teenager Stephen
Lawrence was stabbed to death in a racist attack by a gang of white youths in Eltham,
South-East London in 1993. The police investigation failed to provide sufficient evidence
to convict at the time, and the public inquiry into the investigation caused a national outcry
when it found that the police force was guilty of ‘institutionalised racism’. The case was
back in the news in early 2012, when two members of the gang (Gary Dobson and David
Norris) were finally convicted of the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

OUR CREATIVE HUB:
Linking the Public, Research and Student Work
Thomas Heatherwick, designer
of the beautiful and ingenious
Olympic Flame Cauldron, said
that the spirit of Danny Boyle’s
Olympic Opening Ceremony was
about connecting with ‘people and
rooting things, rather than them
just being up in the air like a dream
in the sky’.1
This grounded approach applies to
the various activities of the School
of Arts, a creative hub where
students, staff and professional
visitors come together to extend
their creativity, curiosity and
imagination, rooted in the reality
of bringing academic research,
student development and artistic
practice into the public arena.
The events in this brochure
are presented by the School of
Arts. Our degree programmes
cover Dance, Film, Music, Sound
Recording and Theatre and our
public events revolve around these
disciplines and artforms. Other
distinct strands of our creative hub
include:
Research
Questioning, challenging, testing,
playing, looking for originality or
explanation are at the centre of
all universities. At Surrey we invite
a wide range of audiences to
enjoy, challenge, debate and even
disagree with our investigations
and findings in performances,
exhibitions, talks and seminars.
We want our audiences to
explore with us and we value your
feedback on our events.
