Ravenscote PE and School Sport
Newsletter Spring 2016
Welcome to our spring PE & Sports newsletter. The children have been working on a range of skills in the curriculum PE and more pupils than ever have been engaged in our Level 1 & 2 sports competitions. Pupils have developed teambuilding in our outdoor learning topic which has included bouldering, orienteering, problem solving and
blind fold trust games. We have also tried some new games, tri golf in year 3&4 and pop lacrosse in year 5&6. As
we move into the summer term we will be focussing on developing the skills required for athletics and striking &
fielding games. We are also looking forward to our annual Sports Day & School Sports Week.
Ravenscote Intra Sports Events (School Games Leve1 1 competitions)
Our Level 1 competition programme has continued this term with tag rugby for year 3&4, hockey for year 5&6
and handball for year 4. These intra school events have proved exceptionally popular and we have had to add accommodate additional teams at all the events. While the games are competitive there are no outright team winners. Players are encouraged to compete fairly and honestly and be respectful in both victory and defeat.

Football & Netball Friendlies: This term saw the conclusion of the year 5&6 Surrey Heath friendly fixtures
with games against Lakeside, St Augustine’s and The Grove. Miss Bell and I have really enjoyed watching the children test their skills in these competitive inter school matches.
SHPSSA Change 4 Life Festival: With the support of Active Surrey Ravenscote hosted the first Surrey Heath
Change 4 Life celebration event. Three schools participated and we were delighted that the Ravenscote Sports
Crew were able to lead the activity sessions. Participants enjoyed working with our young leaders on a range of
physical challenges and our sports crew were outstanding sporting ambassadors for the school.

Spring 2016
SHPSSA & Chelsea Community FC Futsal Festival: Continuing our partnership with Chelsea Community
FC we were delighted to participate in this event @ the Surrey Sports Park. We took 22 year 5 boys to the event
where coaches delivered high quality coaching sessions in a range of futsal skill stations & matches.
SHPSSA Yr5&6 Girls Football County Finals: The Ravenscote girl’s football team continued their run of
form at the Surrey County finals in Woking winning their group and progressing through the QF & SF to face
Bishop Gilpin In the final. A very close game saw Ravenscote defeated 1-0 from a direct free kick. Ravenscote secured our first ever girls’ football county finals silver medal.
SHPSSA Yr5&6 Quicksticks Hockey Festival: Ravenscote entered two teams into this year’s hockey festival
which took place at Kings International. The teams put in a tremendous effort and played some exciting attacking
hockey. The Ravenscote A team lost 1-0 to Hammond in the final. Congratulations to both teams.
SHPSSA Yr5&6 Tag Rugby Festival: A last minute change of venue saw this year’s event move to Ravenscote. The event was managed brilliantly by the Sports Leaders from Collingwood. 10 teams challenged for a
place in the final. The Ravenscote B team narrowly missed a semi-final spot finishing third in their group. Ravenscote A team progressed as runner up and went on to win the final against Bisley 8-8 and 6-4 AET. Both Bisley
& Ravenscote will participate in the Surrey County Finals.
SHPSSA Yr6 High 5 Netball Festival: This year’s netball festival took place at South Camberley Junior School
on what turned out to be a very cold and wet afternoon making the playing conditions less than ideal. The netball
squad fell victim to Holy Trinity in their opening game who would remain unbeaten and go onto win the competition. Ravenscote won their remaining two games to finish second in the group but missing out on a semi final spot
by a single goal. A great effort from the team and thank you to Miss Bell.

Lunchtime Play Crews
Over the last two weeks we have been providing training for pupils in years 4&6 to act as play crews during lunch
times. Each day 8 pupils from year 4 & 6 will organise and lead games in the NEST. Pupils can choose to join the
fun by speaking to the play crew members in charge of the four zones: skipping, ball, team & movement. The aim
is to encourage more active play and provide a range of positive social opportunities for all pupils to build friendships as well as developing leadership skills in our crew members.
Sporting Spotlight — Ollie Mellor Year5 British Schools Biathlon Finals
A huge congratulations to Ollie Mellor who last week competed in the British Schools Biathlon final having previously qualified earlier in the year representing Ravenscote. He came second overall and won both his swim and
run heat. It was held at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace. 96 athletes had qualified to compete in the
finals and he was close to being National Champion and will no doubt do his best to go one better next year !
