Wow! What a active year we've had with our club
and our Labradors. The new year is scheduled to
be even busier with more events for our club
members to participate in. I want to Thank each
and everyone of you who have given so much to
make this club what it is. It takes time, dedication
and a love of our breed to move our club forward. These are exciting times!!
Looking forward to 2011 to be even better for
DFWLRC!

By-Laws Update, Ann Vaughn
The Club has been trying to revamp the By-Laws and make them a little
more up-to-date. Erin Webster started the process. I have finished as much
of the process as possible until the membership votes on the changes. Most
of the changes had to do with using email and electronic media for contacting membership and others interested in DFWLRC, Inc. The other major
change was in counties where meetings could be held, with the
DFW metroplex still being the major hub.

Notes from the Editor
The last Newsletter had a survey of how well we know our members...well, I made a mistake and
left Roy Cone off of the list of members that are judges! I apologized to Roy for the mistake! I
showed under him at Shawnee Mission Specialty soon after the error...he was very forgiving. He
did a nice job of judging and was very good with puppies and youngsters! I also have recently
shown under Sherry Anderson at Belton. Sherry also did a nice job of working with the dogs and handlers.
I did not win under either one, but I would show under them again mainly because they were very courteous to everyone and breeder judges need our support!
I recently worked as a “go-for” at our hunt test. I had a little time to take some pictures and
watch the JH and Master A tests. What talented dogs and trainers we have! I was a little
overwhelmed about the JH test on Saturday, it looked very tough for learning dogs! Member Kay Scott was one of the judges for the Master A tests...don’t know much about Master
tests, but it looked like it was running very smoothly and I did not hear any grumbles in the
gallery. Many of the dogs in this test loved to make big splashes when entering the water, I am going to
have to get better with my camera! The weather was cold and windy, but the camaraderie was very warm.
I guess the saying, “Misery Loves Company,” is true! Volunteers made the Tests flow and no one knows
the work it takes to put on any kind of activity until they volunteer and help to make the project a success.
Our Club has so many talented people that generously give their time to the success and betterment of our talented breed the Labradors! Wahoo! Hats Off to You! The club has several projects
coming up in the near future...VOLUNTEER! Look at the Club Calendar or Reports from the
various Chairpersons and find a venue that interests you...then VOLUNTEER! Making this Club
a success means MEMBERS participate! (wow, that was me on my soap box!)
An addition to my “soapbox”… a new bane to the Club is a Quorum ! Several items have
been on the table for the membership to vote on and make decisions. I do not think there has
been a Quorum since the Yearly Awards meeting in June! It is very hard for the Club to function when many actions stay on the table and no resolutions! All of US need to try to make a
few more of the meetings! I for one would like to be voted on “as a Full membership” instead of an Associate, then I could help to make a Quorum!

PennHIP Database For Labrador Retrievers
Ever try to locate a Labrador with a PennHIP Score? The Pawcatuck River Labrador Retriever Club is providing a database service to the Labrador community. We feel that this is an important tool in improving our
breed. Breeders/owners are able to register their dog’s PennHIP information directly from our website at
http://pennhip.prlrc.org Searching the database is a breeze! To search for all dogs on the database, do a
search without filling in a name. Please give it a try and we appreciate your support.
www.PinkRibbonPuppies.com This 2011 wall calendar was inspired by an unexpected turn of events when a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer a week after breeding our co-owned Labrador Retriever this summer. As much as she was looking forward to
these puppies, it was decided that my friend should focus on healing
so while her day started with radiation treatment five days a week
for six weeks, mine started with puppy breath! ...Carrie Eberhardt
100% of the proceeds from the sale of the calendar will be donated to the
Breast Cancer Research Foundation (R) http://www.bcrfcure.org/

Pythiosis (an email that has gone around and a future
club presentation with Bob Glass from PavLab )
Pythiosis: an intestinal infection that several dogs have
contracted !
Experts are seeing Pythium cases on the increase already this year and expect it
to be one of the worst years seen in a while. All the rain is making for more
standing water. Ponds/lakes that had very low water levels for the last 3 years
had grass and other vegetation growing in areas that are now under water since
these ponds and lakes are once again full of water. It's great for fishing and
for Pythium. Please visit any of the following sites and educate yourself and
other dog owners about this
disease.
Though this disease can strike and kill dogs of all ages we see it more in the
younger dogs. This is probably because younger dogs will play in any puddle they
find and lower immune system. If your dog vomits 2-3 consecutive meals, the
first thought is they have swallowed something. If they have not, you might
question Pythiosis.
Primary states with infections: FL, LA, TX, MS, AL, GA; also, some in NC,SC, TN,
MO, IA, IN, IL, OK

A team of Mississippi State veterinary faculty members, clinicians and students is working to demonstrate that a
hunting dog's frequent exposure to gunshots can progressively damage the animal's hearing.
A first, the university study of noise-induced deafness in dogs is being supported by the College of Veterinary
Medicine's Office of Research and the Denver, Colo.-based American Animal Hospital Association Foundation.
"A partially deaf dog is not as effective as either a hunter or as a pet," said Dr. Andrew Mackin, holder of the college's Hugh Ward Chair in Veterinary Medicine and an associate professor in small animal internal medicine.
To make the investigation as scientifically controlled as possible, Mackin said the team only is testing Labrador retrievers. In addition to being quite common in Mississippi, the breed habitually sits near the hunter and, therefore,
close to his or her shotgun.
Mackin said the test subjects are middle-aged animals 4-10 years old. "We wanted dogs that are old enough to have
hunted at least a couple of seasons, yet not old enough to be going deaf out of old age," he explained.
Because swimming can cause ear infections leading to progressive hearing loss, the team screened candidates to
rule out evidence of past or current infections, Mackin said.
During the testing, Mackin and his team sedate the dogs and attach scalp electrodes and a tiny probe in the dog's
ear canal. The probe sends a repeated clicking noise and the researchers record the electrical pattern in the dog's
brain to see how well the dog can hear. The test is repeated in both ears and the results are compared. The hearing
test is a painless, standard way of testing for deafness in animals.
"We routinely perform this kind of hearing test for pet owners," Mackin said.
While a healthy Lab begins to hear sounds at about 10 or 15 decibels--much like a healthy human--Mackin said one
test animal that has been heavily exposed to gunshots didn't respond until 60 decibels, which is quite loud.
The research group also includes Dr. David Jennings, a neurologist, and Dr. Amy Janda, a small animal intern, as
well as two veterinary students. Janda said the sound at 60 decibels is comparable to half the noise of a jet engine.
The team's original research proposal called for testing a total of 40 dogs, 20 hunters and 20 non-hunters.
"The difficult thing in Mississippi is to find a Lab retriever that never has been hunting," Mackin said. As a result,
team members decided to forgo a search for 40 animals.
"We are very excited about our preliminary data," he said. "Practically all of the hunting dogs have some hearing
loss and practically all of the non-hunting dogs have great hearing."
The difference in hearing ability between the two test groups "is extreme," he added.
Ultimately, results of the study could have great consequences for hunters.
