the New Black
Soft gray, as shown on this Palliser

and where to look for more
If the color gray brings to mind childhood memories of
staring out a window on a dismal day waiting for the sun
to return, dotty elders, bankers’ suits, or some vague,
intermediate area, it may be time for a new appraisal. In
home furnishings at least, gray has broken free of its dreary
associations and shot to No. 1 with a bullet. Gray—in all its
shades—is hot!
“Dark gray, mid-gray, light gray, if it’s gray, it’s topping the
6 AT HOME
charts,” relates one color expert, a comment echoed by
Contemporary Design Group members across the board.
In upholstery, where trend forecasters report that rounded,
curvy silhouettes are getting more attention than designs
with sharp angles or square corners, gray is now considered
the “new neutral.” In wood furnishings, where walnut is ruling
the day, gray-toned woods appear to be gathering momentum. And, in metal finishes, the most in-demand looks span
silvery gray shades like brushed chrome, steel and platinum.

We Gotcha Covered
Gray or not, neutral upholstery continues to hold sway in
Contemporary Design Group member showrooms across
the country. “Neutral fabric—gray, black, brown, khaki,
beige, ivory and even some navy and greens—make the
clean lines of a contemporary sofa or sectional frame stand
out; you can really see the design. It’s just an easier read,”
says one designer. “Then, we like to pop it with color.”
In fact, design experts suggest starting with a neutral
base in an investment piece like a sofa or sectional and
then layering in color with pillows, accessories, artwork
and accent chairs, can be a smart and cost-effective
way to remain on fashion’s leading edge. Then, as trends

anointed color this year is Radiant Orchid), fuchsia, eggplant, blue, turquoise, aqua, teal, green, red, yellow,
orange or pink, or you are simply in the mood for a
change, updating your look is quick and easy.
An even smarter move for many shoppers now is opting for
something in the relatively new class of high-performance
fabrics. With brand names like Sunbrella, Crypton, Brisa
and Ultrasuede, and durable, high-tech constructions like
microfiber, easy-care performance fabrics guard against
stains and wear, look great and feel just as good. Accidents
happen, and performance fabrics are a boon for openplan spaces where food and drinks are consumed, and for
those sharing spaces with children and pets.

Here’s how to enjoy the party
EVER IMAGINED YOURSELF as the host of one of those intimate
dinner parties portrayed in glossy ads, surrounded by shiny, happy
people looking exceptionally beautiful in the soft glow of candlelight,
gathered around a table perfectly dressed with a spread only a
professional food stylist could have arranged, and thought, “my
friends just don’t clean up that well.”
Well, we can’t help much with your social network, or for that matter,
the menu for the Food Network challenge. (Hint: hire a personal chef
and bartender for the evening.) We can, however, offer some insights
on how to make your space look magazine-shoot ready.
Fill your bar with all the necessities
before company arrives.
10 AT HOME
Take that dining room for instance. A lot of homes today don’t actually
have one, or at least, a dining room that is limited strictly to dining.
“Builders are eliminating the traditional dining room in many homes
today, in favor of more open-plan layouts and multi-use spaces,” says
one design expert. “Furniture designers are following suit with multifunctional pieces that adapt to these spaces, and the changing needs
and uses they accommodate in an instant.”

Just the Beginning

your table a snap.
TO HELP GUESTS staying the night feel welcome, today’s hosts
and hostesses with the most, emulate world-class hoteliers and
innkeepers in the thoughtful details. Offer a selection of fluffy
towels, soaps and other toiletries in the bath, and empty space
in either a closet or drawer (preferably both) for guests to stow
clothing and other personal items. High thread-count sheets and
cloud-like pillows are, of course, de rigueur. Those who truly expect
to be remembered as a five-star establishment though had better
investigate the American Leather sleeper, known among true
connoisseurs as the ultimate overnight accommodation, not only for
its exceptionally good-looking, patent-pending design that provides
comfortable seating, but because it is actually exceptionally
comfortable to sleep on as well.
Stirred, Not in the Least Bit Shaken
Indeed, if your notion of extending the dining table
to accommodate extra guests involves dragging
a set of leaves out of storage once or twice a year
and wrenching open the table from both ends
to insert them, only to reverse the whole process
when the party ends, it’s time to take a look at
some of the newest designs in dining.
You’ll find cool table designs that are motorized
with self-store leaves, as well as height-adjustable
from table height to bar height for cocktails, and
cocktail tables that raise up to dining height when
everyone decides to linger into the dinner hour.
Self-store leaves are ideal for the right-sizing
crowd for whom storage is always an issue.
Other hip options created to make any event
smoother and stress-free, are multi-purpose
bars with plenty of storage, bar carts and other
wheeled designs that allow a host to easily move
the party—outdoors in or indoors out—and taller
media cabinets that double as sideboards.

Hides Are Hip
When it comes to contemporary furniture, beauty is indeed skin deep
SUPPLE AND LUXURIOUS, leather lends itself beautifully
to the sophisticated, sleek and clean lines of high-fashion,
contemporary furniture designs, with a draping capability that
serves to emphasize the great shapes of today’s styles.
Yet, when seeking the perfect sofa, sectional or chair that
speaks to you like no other, experts say that the soft and
plush hand—or feel—of the leather covering the frame is
the factor often trumping all else in the majority of shoppers’
buying decisions.
That’s not too surprising given that touch is the first sense
we experience in the womb. A superbly soft leather just
feels wonderful, and well, sexy—making our initial attraction
and emotional response to contact with this natural and
luxe material extremely visceral. If you want the attraction
to develop into a relationship that can go the distance,
however, it’s important to ask (and answer) a few questions to
determine compatibility.
Who (and what) Do You Love?
Be upfront with your salesperson or design consultant about
all other loves in your life, particularly kids and pets, because
14 AT HOME
not all leathers are created equal and durability is a factor to
consider. Also, be open about your lifestyle, meaning, how,
where and how often the furniture will be used.
“The fact is, a quality leather can last a very long time,” relates
a Contemporary Design Group upholstery expert. “And when
you are investing in great, quality design, you want longevity.”
As wise a choice as leather furniture can be, education is
key to determine the ideal grade of leather for your unique
circumstances and ensure you receive the best value for your
furniture investment.
A family with small children and a couple of dogs who like to
nap on the sofa may not want a naked, or untreated aniline
leather which offers no protection from stains in their family
room, for example. And if they do, they should be sure to
understand what to expect in terms of how the leather will
wear over the long haul. High-traffic space or not, that same
family may also not want a fully protected leather due to the
difference in the feel of the material. [See accompanying
story]. The good news is that a Contemporary Design Group
professional can help choose the ideal leather, which may be
one with some protectant that still has a soft, supple feel.
leather
Leather,
By Definition
Here are some words commonly used to describe leathers. Working
with your design professional will help you decide which is the BEST
leather for you!
Pure Aniline: Most leathers are analine dyed, But only the finest, most
beautiful hides are analine dyed and left “naked” creating a sumptuous
and soft leather.
Semi-aniline: Sometimes called “protected,” these leathers have a small
amount of surface pigment, giving them slightly better protection against
stains and fading.
Corrected: These leathers are less costly. The natural top grain is
corrected and embossed to create a uniform look. Heavier surface
pigment is applied making care of these leathers easier.
Pull-up: Full anilines that have been processed to produce a weathered,
or distressed look.
Embossed: Varying grades of leather can be embossed to create natural
looking textures or artistic patterns. textures.
Why Top Grain is Tops
LEATHER FURNITURE PRICES are largely determined by
the quality or grade of the leather, and leathers are graded
by the size, location and extent of the natural blemishes like
wrinkles and scars that are inherent in all natural hides.
Hides are separated into layers. “The very top layer is
known as the top grain, and if you were to examine the
top layer under a microscope, you would see fibers
running in every direction, making the top grain layer of
the hide very, very strong,” says a Contemporary Design
Group leather expert.
There’s a vast range of
quality and price within
top grain leathers, and
what’s best for one may
not be best for others.
Part of leather furniture’s
great appeal is luxuriant
comfort. “The finest of top
grain leathers will have the
softest feel, but may not
be as desirable if ease of

your house,” advises one expert. “They do tend to be a little
more temperamental.”
Finally, no matter how well it is cared for, all upholstered
furniture will fade with time and exposure to light and heat.

MASHUP
Blending contemporary home furnishings with your favorite
antiques and other styles you love
THERE ARE MANY reasons to love modern and contemporary style. Whether you came of age in an era when designers
like Charles and Ray Eames and Milo Baughman were first beginning to celebrate form and function by incorporating plastics, bent veneers and lighter weight materials into useable objects, or at a time when we carry more technology in our back
pocket than those masters of mid-century design could ever have imagined, something in the sleek shapes, clean lines
and cool curves appeals.
Even so, few of us experience only one true love in our lives. “Most people are not strictly one style or another,” relates one
style expert. And, like that box of photographs, ticket stubs and love letters from past relationships tucked away on the top
shelf of the closet we never get around to disposing of, we consumers tend to collect all sorts of “things” over time.

It’s all in the Mix
“Americans are gravitating toward minimalism
and cleaner, simpler lines,” says one design
expert.
That said, the experts say that achieving the
perfect balance can be tricky. And that’s where
the design professionals associated with the
Contemporary Design Group can help.
Even so, as with that aforementioned box of
old love letters, we remain emotionally attached to certain things, and most won’t fit
in a cardboard box. Nor do most of us begin
with an entirely empty room. Prized antiques
passed down through generations, a vintage
find with meaning, or the special “thing” with
strong sentimental value you found on that
amazing European vacation; maybe lots of
special things. So what to do? Blend.
“Your space should make you feel good, so
you need to surround yourself with things that
make you feel good,” relates a Contemporary
Design Group retailer. “I grew up in a family that
blended antiques and contemporary furnishings so I appreciate that it gives a room a sense
of character.”
“When you put a classic modern sofa together
in a room with antiques, everything looks better,”
says yet another contemporary design specialist.
“The result is very eclectic. There’s a sense of
warmth that softens the edges and you can sit
back and reflect on the individual pieces.”
“Simplicity can be very easy to accomplish, and
we can help,” relates one member. “We have
on-staff design consultants who understand
how to use color, texture, finish and scale to tie
things together, and how to use an antique for
contrast, or a special piece as a focal point in
an interior space.”
Americans are moving toward minimalism, but
that doesn’t mean tossing out all that you love
and hold dear. Modern goes with everything.
Contemporary isn’t always cold; it can be
warm, welcoming and cozy. It’s not all glass
and steel.
“One of the things our designers ask people
to consider is, what are the things in your room
that are there now that you absolutely love, that
you couldn’t live without?’,” said one expert. “A
trained eye will be able to bring all the disparate
elements together and make it great.”

Point
How and where to find accessories to give
your home a finished, pulled-together look.
WITH CLEAN LINES and shapes akin to modern art forms, well-designed contemporary
styles look right at home in nearly every space, and are beautifully compatible with just
about everything else we own. The jewelry, or accessories, added to a room makes it home.
Striking the balance between too few and too many accents is key in creating a welldressed home. This in mind, we turned to a number of contemporary design experts to
seek advice on what may feel like a bit of a conundrum: How does one go about properly
accessorizing a space without overdoing it?
Dressing for Success
“I think of decorative accessories the
way French women wear scarves,” a
contemporary design maven described.
“She gets up in the morning and puts
on the same, well-designed black dress
nearly every day, but she throws on her
Hermès scarf one day, or the Khai Silk
scarf she picked up in Vietnam another,
and that’s what makes her entire outfit.
“If you think of the major pieces in your room as the canvas, or little black
dress, or jeans and T-shirt,” she continues, “the accessories you choose
are the jewelry and shoes. They are the great scarves that you put on that
can take the room to the next level. Accessories give your home a finished,
pulled together look that make it really feel the way you want it to.”

a contemporary design consultant? “You can wear a
great dress and make it look better by adding beautiful

in scale and proportion, to know what’s available out
there, and we can help identify the piece that will make
a room, ‘your’ room.”
stores don’t just sell furniture, they scour markets across
the world for special accents for a complete look.
“Contemporary design pairs wonderfully with original
art, from paintings and other wall décor to sculptures in
colored glass, metal and mixed media. The key is to look
for pieces that make a statement, whether it’s because
of its color, or its scale. But most of all, it is important to
surround yourself with things you really love.”

Four Surprising Health Benefits
1. Longer Life Expectancy
Did you know that you can live longer simply
by standing up more and sitting down less?
Studies show that active people have a longer
life expectancy than their sedentary counterparts. Sitting at a desk for long periods of time
can actually cause physical harm. As you sit,
fat accumulates in your heart, liver, brain and
other organs. Your muscles lose their tone and
definition, and your body tires more easily.
The Sit-Stand Desk
Rise with the touch of a button.
Sitting also places more pressure or “static”
loading on the upper body than standing.
Standing relieves the pressure on your back by
40%. So rather than growing tired in a seated
position, why not give your back a rest by
standing for a short time.
2. Burn More Calories
How many calories can you burn by switching from a sit-down desk to a stand-up desk?
More than you think. A Sit-Stand Desk can
help you avoid the health pitfalls of sitting
down all day. In fact, you can burn up to a
third more calories during the course of a
seven hour workday if you stand up. If you
are trying to lose or manage your weight, the
calories can really add up.
3. Improve Posture & Circulation
A Sit-Stand Desk encourages you to stay active
throughout the day, improving circulation,
posture and core strength. Movement is a
good way to keep your muscles engaged and
it keeps the blood flowing to improve overall
circulation helping you stay fit and healthy.
Lift or lower

anywhere from

with the touch
of a button.
4. Increase Energy & Reduce Stress
A Sit-Stand Desk increases your focus, alertness and activity level allowing you to more
easily release restless energy. Combine that
with the good circulation, stable blood sugar
and the active metabolism that standing
requires - and it is easier to focus on the task
at hand. Standing while working also helps
energy levels by fighting off the naturally occurring slumps and bouts of fatigue that often
happen mid morning or early afternoon.
Isn’t it time you stood up for your health?

LIVING LARGE
Making the most of small spaces
GREAT CONTEMPORARY DESIGN comes in all shapes and sizes. That’s particularly good news for
many as urban centers are growing faster than their suburban counterparts.
Driving the changing numbers are waves of empty nesters seeking to downsize, as well as young
professionals following opportunities in the job markets. Both groups are in search of the vibrant
lifestyles cities afford, with easy access to public transportation, culture, restaurants, nightlife and more.
26 AT HOME
organize
The trade-off, of course, for people living in urban environments is that space becomes limited.
Maximizing it in the most stylish and efficient way is where contemporary style’s emphasis on design
innovation, function and performance really shines.
“We specialize in furniture that is compact and multi-functional and we can offer alternatives for
people who have spatial problems that they didn’t have, say, 10 or 15 years ago,” says a Contemporary
Design Group member devoted to providing shoppers with practical solutions that are easy to live and
work with.
Short on Dimensions, Big on Style
When space is at a premium, every inch counts. Know what
you’ve got to work with and be prepared to share the information
with a design consultant. It’s helpful to go to a store with rough
dimensions of your living space, Most Contemporary Design
Group showrooms offer free, in-home design consultations
and will gladly take the measurements for you, eliminating any
guesswork in the process.
The next order of business is to determine how you want to use
the area you have. Often, when space is limited, a room serves
more than one function. Do you want to sleep in the space, or will
you need to accommodate overnight guests? How about dining
and entertaining?
A.L.F. offers wall units featuring a myriad of cubbies.
Like Clark Kent ducking into a phone booth and emerging as
Superman, many of today’s innovative furniture designs are
quick-change artists that can smoothly segue from one function
to another. Imagine a glass-topped extension table with leaves
stored inside the table. When a longer dining surface is called for,
the leaves roll out and pop up into place, then tuck back in when
the party is over. Or, a coffee table on rollers with a lift top that
easily morphs into a movable dining area then shifts back out of
the way.
Storage invariably remains an issue for anyone living in a
small space. Thankfully Contemporary Design Group design
professionals have more than a few tricks up their sleeves to
maximize available space. They can use vertical space by moving
up the wall with bookcases and wall units that act as room
dividers. Or, they can create a bedroom where none exists with
sleeper sofas that are comfortable enough to sleep on every
night, and find additional storage opportunities with beds that
feature deep drawers hidden beneath.
Contemporary Design Group members are great sources
of information and offer smart design tips for the spatially
challenged.

Look to products made in North America for exceptional
quality and value
THE BEAUTY OF A GLOBAL economy is that there is
virtually nothing beyond the reach of American shoppers
today. Indeed, the entire planet is little more than a click
away. Yet, while the world is our oyster, there are good
reasons to think locally.
Great design can come from anywhere, and Contemporary
Design Group members scour the world in search of
beautifully designed, contemporary looks. Sometimes,
however, those beautiful designs are found right at home
in the U.S.
States like North Carolina, Vermont, California and Texas
are home to a number of furniture suppliers for the 25
retailers who make up the Contemporary Design Group.
30 AT HOME
“Some of the best designs we’ve found were designed
right here in America,” says one group member, adding
that many of those states are steeped in furniture
manufacturing history.
While searching for products for their stores, Contemporary
Design Group members rigorously vet any company—
domestic or otherwise—we partner with to ensure the
highest standards possible.
If furnishing your home with American-made goods is
important to you, know that your local Contemporary
Design Group showroom offers a wide array of
product from mid-century modern to contemporary
and beyond.

Your Local DESIGN
EXPERT
The advantages of shopping locally, and in a Contemporary Design Group store
EVERYONE NEEDS somebody in their
corner, and when shopping for great
contemporary and modern home
furnishings, shoppers can find no better
ally than a local Contemporary Design
Group member store.
Contemporary Design Group members
have been recognized for excellence
by trade associations like the North
American Home Furnishings Association, the Better Business Bureau, and
within their individual communities.
The group is also proudly affiliated with
the Sustainable Furnishings Council,
a non-profit committed to promoting
sustainable practices among manufacturers, retailers and shoppers alike.
Supporting a local retailer — like your
Contemporary Design Group store
— can have a meaningful, profound
impact in your community.

Local, independent and active participants of their communities, members
support local Habitat for Humanity
chapters, hospital foundations, beautiful art museums and a wide variety of
other establishments and charitable
organizations.
Store designers are talented professionals. Many of them are graduates of
top design schools, American Society of
Interior Designers members (ASID) and
Council for Interior Design accredited.
“Don’t undervalue the relationship that
you can develop with your designer,
or sales consultant,” relates one retail
expert, “because that person can be a
font of knowledge. They can be your
problem solver, and they can cut the
decision-making and editing process
in half. Plus, when you become friendly
with a designer, when you come back
in you won’t have to start from scratch.
They will already know your tastes and
the styles you like.”
Along with superior design and service
assistance on the ground, Contemporary Design Group buyers are dedicated
retail professionals who never stop
searching for the most unique and high
quality designs for your home. They are
also highly creative and work closely
with manufacturers to offer several
exclusive CDG collections and designs
that cannot be found anywhere else. As
talented and experienced negotiators,
they obtain the best prices and pass the
savings along to their customers.
