Potentate’s Message

To All Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Jaffa,
The most recent event was the Atlantic City trip and everything went very well and this year, of course, not having a
tropical storm to contend with helped a great deal. Some came home with a little jingle in their pockets, some didn’t, but
most still had their shirt on their backs when we arrived home.
The Gun Raffle was a great project for Jaffa and I thank Chairman Scott Buchanan and his very capable committee for a
job well done. This is a huge project as most are, but I hope everyone appreciates the planning and hard work that is
expended by the Committee and all of the volunteers who also were kind enough to give their time and talents to the Gun
Raffle. Thank you!
The annual Kiddies’ Christmas Party is coming together very nicely. I especially want to thank all who have contributed
to make this possible. As you may have heard, the Party this year will include youngsters who would not usually have an
opportunity to attend the Jaffa Kiddies’ Christmas Party. This was customarily done every year in Jaffa and we somehow left that go by the wayside. We are hoping to bring some joy to these little ones because you cared. Please bring
your youngsters as well, as we always look forward to seeing how they’ve grown.
Through the past year, it has been my pleasure to have served as the Potentate of Jaffa Shrine. You, the Nobility, and
your Ladies have demonstrated time and time again that you are the very best Temple in Shrinedom. We have met many
challenges this year and you have surpassed the expectations of your Divan at every opportunity. You have supported
the Hospitals, the Capital Campaign Fund, the Endowment Fund, and certainly not the least, the Kiddies’ Christmas
Party. The generosity of the Units, Shrine Clubs and individuals proves that you are the best.
I was asked by one of the Representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of Virginia Beach, “how does Jaffa entice so
many of their members to participate in the MASA Convention?” Which also proves my point, you are the best, and that
was my answer.
As we “close out” the year of 2013, Jan and I want to thank you for your many kindnesses and consideration over the
year. I also ask that you remember that MEMBERSHIP IS OUR FUTURE and you continue to support this endeavor
so that Jaffa will survive and prosper over the coming years.

DEC 2013/JAN 2014
JAFFA JOURNAL—PAGE: The parade season has come to a successful end
after a summer full of local parades and the Mid
Atlantic shrine convention parade. Parades
are great place to advertise Jaffa and all that it
entails: the brotherhood of shrine and masonry,
and the opportunity to participate with a shrine
unit or club and remind the local residents in
02817(' our Jaffa territory of our shrine philanthropy 3$752/ the shrine hospitals and burns centers.
Our last three parades were well attended by
our Mounties - Schellsburg, the Altoona Campus
Homecoming Parade and the Hollidaysburg Halloween parade. The
part of the parade that I always enjoy is dinner with the Mounties and
their ladies and families after the parade - whether it be at a local
restaurant or the home of a Mountie. Great fun - already looking
forward to next year.
We are very fortunate to have good leadership in the unit and that
has attracted some great new active mounties. Several years ago our
membership was down, but with some new and younger blood, we
are back. And it is great to have the young members children at our
parades and other functions.
I personally want to take the opportunity to thank the Mounties
that have helped me out since my last parade horse passed on to the
big pasture in the sky. After 43 years of parading on 8 of my own
steeds, my Mountie friends have been sure that I have had a suitable,
trusty - and sturdy- steed to carry me over the parade routes. Thank
you all so very much, especially Brad, Dave and the Imlers. And for
the new "mounting block" that helps me get back in the saddle again.
On November 1 the Mounties and the Jaffa Antique Car Club
teamed up for their annual 300 Club at Jaffa. The proceeds have not
yet been determined, but the attendance and enthusiasm exhibited
were astounding.
Our Thanksgiving service at Jaffa is always a pleasure. Noble
Rev. Dick Henry and his committee give us a great opportunity to
worship together and give thanks for our bounty. All of Jaffa nobility need to be more supportive of this annual service and their efforts. Be sure to put it on your calendar for next year.
The fall ceremonial has not taken place at the time of this writing,
but it is my wish that we have taken in some good new members and
some prospective mounties.
This year's Christmas party is reverting back to where it was
many years ago when the emphasis was on helping the less fortunate. At one time we invited the young residents of the areas local
orphanages, but when they were no longer operational, we emphasized our own children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and
friends. I am sure Santa made his usual grand entrance.
Don't forget our great New Year's Eve Party, open to all shrinemasons and their friends. Reservations are available in the Recorder's Office. Party on and Happy New Year to all.
Our Jaffa Journal is supported by Jaffa funds and by our loyal and
faithful advertisers, most of whom are fellow shriners and masons. Please be sure to patronize them. Whether you need a holiday
turkey or your vehicle towed or serviced, home service or repairs, or
professional personal service, please support our advertisers and your
shrine mason brothers.
And don't forget to and attend your masonic lodge, Scottish Rite
and York Rite bodies. That is where we all started out - don't forget
to go back.
Until the next time, sit tall in the saddle and keep a steady hand on
the reins.

Parade season is over ..... last two
were the Penn State-Altoona
Homecoming Parade and the Hollidaysburg Halloween Parade. Both very nice ..... Altoona
parade was cold (as reported by a
couple of Lady Vettes) and the Hollidaysburg Parade was long and
spooky (with loads of tootsie rolls passed out to the hungry goblins) .
The unit presented donations to both the Shriners Philadelphia

and Rich Hill presented a check to the Erie Hospital for Children
from the Lil Vette Unit on a recent Roadrunner trip. These monies
were the result of the sale of chances on the handcrafted wooden

Election of officers was held for the 2014 year. Serving as President will be Charlie Cox, Dwayne Solich as Vice President and

Here it is the first of November already. A very

they are bored in retirement should try to follow

Meets the 3rd Friday at 7:30 PM
The New Year is here, why not mark your
calendar
now for the 3rd Friday of every

month at 7:30 PM. We would really like to
&2536 see you and fellowship with the members
who have not been at a meeting for a while.
If you need a ride call one of the officers and we will try to get a
ride for you. We would also like to see you at Jaffa functions even
if you can't help you can keep the meeting room comfortable for
the members that are working.
The Sports Show is right around the corner. As always, we need
all the help we can get with parking. Hopefully the weather will
cooperate and be warmer and dryer than it has been in the past.
Then before we know it, the Circus will be here in April. Hopefully we will see everyone there helping also. Any time you can
give is always appreciated.

To any Noble of Jaffa, the Cycle Corps would like to invite you to
join the Cycle Corps. We ride motorcycles in parades, park cars
for numerous events held at Jaffa, make Cotton Candy at Circus
time and just have fun and good fellowship. We have always been
a family oriented group. (There are a couple of bikes that may be
for sale).
Please remember that we ride and have fun so that the children
can receive help at the Shrine Hospitals. We also enjoy putting a
smile on the children’s faces along with the adults when we
ride. The Cycle Corps members would like to wish everyone a
very Happy and Safe 2013 Holiday season and a happy and
healthy New Year.
I would like to thank all the Cycle Corps Members for all the help
that they gave with the parking this year.
Our meetings are held on the 3rd Friday of every month at 7:30PM
in the Cycle Room.

We are ten weeks into this bowling season and
oh how things have changed. The String Band
with the return of Harry Hileman (thinking he
was a logger) to a strong team leads the High
Division in a close race with the Clowns (we
never let our bowling interfere with our refreshments) team, by1/2 game.
In the Low Division the Dively boys are in a
battle for the lead with Steve Dively and his
Patrol team leading brother Scottie Dively and last year’s league
Champion Jeepsters team. The Jokers thought they were close
behind until an error was discovered in the previous week’s
scores.
We are 12 teams strong but always have openings for a few new
bowlers, so come out and join us Monday evenings at Holliday
Bowl. The bowlers have a great time win or lose. We have a few
bowlers out with illness. Wishing better days to Leon Collins,
Dick Campbell, Ken Nofsker and (our Christmas party manager)
Jim Bertoldi. Hurry back guys when you are feeling better.
Some people can no longer afford to bowl because of the economy the way it is. We have picked up some new bowlers. A big
welcome to Mel Woomer, Dennis Etters, Jim Paul, Ron Estep and
Barrie Wyland.
Individual awards have Randy Colyer with the Low average lead
with a 106 and Doug Hoffman has the High average with a 204.
The USBC has decided to cut the amount of awards it will give
out next year. They are asking the local bowling associations to
buy their own awards next season. More on that later.
I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year!

Well, we got back to our meeting schedule in September. We have had several Roadrunner trips to
Cincinnati and to Erie recently. Except for 1 exceptionally long run to Erie, they have been very good trips. That
Erie trip was due to appointment delays.
We had a fundraiser at Luigi’s Ristorante in DuBois on Nov 3rd
that was very successful. Our members covered 2 hour shifts
from 11:00am to 7:00pm and reported a brisk business and fine
camaraderie with the patrons all day.
Officers will be elected at our November meeting. No hint as of
yet who is interested in what.
Well, this report is short as I was a tad late! The Holiday season
is getting here fast, so allow me to wish all of you a very Happy
Thanksgiving and an early Merry Christmas!
Respectfully submitted,
Ron Ferguson, Secretary
Our Christmas Party has been scheduled for Dec. 7th. As always, we are looking for a good turnout and a nice evening.

Santarsiero resolution honoring Daughters
of the Nile adopted by House
HARRISBURG, Oct. 24 – A state House resolution recognizing Oct. 30
as "Daughters of the Nile Day" in Pennsylvania was unanimously adopted
Wednesday, said state Rep. Steve Santarsiero, sponsor of H.R. 535.
Celebrating its 100th birthday this year, Daughters of the Nile supports
Shriners Hospitals for Children by raising funds for research and equipment, surgeries, therapies and prostheses for children who suffer from
cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injuries, orthopedic issues or serious
burns, regardless of their family's ability to pay.
For their innumerous contributions, Santarsiero’s resolution urges a celebration of the Daughters’ membership in five temples across PennsylvaQLD$LU\V7HPSOH1R3LWWVEXUJK$OODK7HPSOH1R3KLODGHOSKLD
3O\PRXWK0HHWLQJ'RUFDV7HPSOH1R$OWRRQD2]HPE7HPSOH1R
+DUULVEXUJDQG6HONHW7HPSOH1R(ULH
Members also provide children with clothing and quilts, activity bags,
toys, books, educational and recreational items to help a child during their
recovery at a Shriners Hospital.
"The perseverance of philanthropy, good will and real help is always
worth commending," said Santarsiero, D-Bucks. "The selfless service of
only a few can help many through difficult and trying times. That basic
tenet, as exemplified by the Daughters of the Nile, is a cornerstone in
shaping a more supportive society and brighter world."

Shriners Hospitals for Children®
Howard Hanna Real Estate
Raising Funds for SHC—Erie
Howard Hanna Real Estate,
which has offices in Pennsylvania,
Ohio, West Virginia, Michigan and
New York, is holding a series of fundraisers in the Erie area to benefit
Shriners Hospitals for Children—Erie
Ambulatory Surgery Center and Outpatient Specialty Care Center, along
with the Howard Hanna Children’s
Free Care Fund.
These events, called “ChowChow,” are being sponsored by the
individual Howard Hanna offices in
the Erie area, and involve great food
and beverages. They are typically held
at local dining establishments and
clubs, and also include Chinese and
Silent auctions for great gifts. Funds
are raised through admission and prize
ticket sales.
This is the third year that
Howard Hanna has included Shriners
Erie in the proceeds from the “ChowChow” events. Last year’s “ChowChow” events raised more than
$13,000 for Shriners Erie.

JAFFA JOURNAL—DEC 2013/JAN 2014
“I’m the Guy”
Dear Illustrious Sir,
members of the Divan,
and fellow Nobles,
I’m the guy who was asked to join
your organization. I’m the guy who
paid his dues to join. I’m the guy
who stood up in front of you and
promised to be faithful and loyal.
I’m the guy who came to your meetings and no one paid any attention to
me. I tried several times to be friendly with some of the fellows, but they
all had their own buddies to talk to
and to sit next to. I hoped very much
that somebody would have asked me
to take part in a fund-raising project
or something, but no one saw my
efforts when I volunteered.
I missed a few meetings after joining
because I was sick and couldn’t be
there. No one asked me at the next
meeting where I had been. I guess it
didn’t matter very much whether I
was there or not. The next meeting I
decided to stay home and watch TV.
I attended the following meeting and
no one asked where I was when the
last meeting was held.
You might say I’m a good guy, a
good family man who holds a responsible job, loves the community and
his country. You know who else I
am? I’m the guy who never came
back.
It amuses me when I think back on
how the heads of the organization
were discussing why the organization
was losing members. It amuses me
now to think that you spent so much
time looking for new members when
I was there all the time. All you had
to do was make me feel needed,
wanted and welcome.
Regretfully yours,
A member you lost
NOBLES—are you guilty of doing
this??
