Economic Growth for the Denver Metropolitan Area's Future
Mayor Michael B. Hancock
Michael B. Hancock became Denver, Colorado’s 45th mayor in July 2011 and immediately began to
transform Denver into a more globally competitive city. With the fifth-busiest airport in the United State
serving more than 53 million passengers per year, Mayor Hancock is leveraging Denver International
Airport to make the entire Denver region a major gateway to the world. Mayor Hancock has secured five
new, nonstop international flights, including Tokyo, Mexico City and Reykjavik, bringing a combined
$167.4M in economic benefits to the region. These routes are opening new connections between the
Rocky Mountain West and Asia, Europe and Central America. To help the Denver area compete in the
global marketplace, Mayor Hancock also is working to create a bustling Airport City and Aerotropolis,
which will create more than 30,000 new jobs over the next 20 years. The first phase of these initiatives
includes a new 500-room hotel and transit center at the airport, as well as a 20-mile rail line linking
Downtown Denver with DIA. Mayor Hancock was also recently named as the first Mayor to serve on the
FAA’s Management Advisory Council, where he will bring Denver’s ingenuity to the table as he works to
advance major issues on behalf of DIA, other airports and the aviation industry. He also now serves on the
U.S. Conference of Mayors Transportation Committee. Mayor Hancock worked with regional leaders to
secure a new U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in Downtown Denver. The Patent Office will generate
nearly $440 million in economic benefits over the next five years and establish Denver as a hub of
innovation in the high-tech and advanced-industry sectors – something Mayor Hancock calls Denver’s
Ideas Economy. The Mayor has also developed strategic short- and long-term business plans to support
and grow Denver’s diverse, intelligent and forward-leaning businesses in emerging industries such as
clean energy, bio-technology, telecommunications, aerospace and healthcare. Denver’s economy is at the
forefront of American cities, offering among the strongest job and housing markets in the U.S. The Mayor
believes there is nothing more important than helping every young person in every neighborhood compete
and succeed in the 21st Century economy. He is aligning all City departments with nonprofits, businesses
and educational organizations to better prepare all children for every stage of life through new initiatives
such as the Denver Children’s Cabinet and Denver Education Compact. As Denver and cities across the
country emerge from the recession, Mayor Hancock is committed to creating economic opportunity and
eliminating inequities and disparities. Top priorities include reducing homelessness, increasing affordable
housing options, strengthening workforce training partnerships with community colleges, and finding
solutions to chronic mental health and substance abuse challenges in the community. Mayor Hancock has
also brought meaningful reform to the Denver Police Department by establishing new leadership that has
reorganized the department to get highly trained officers out of the office and back onto the streets. These
steps together strengthen Denver’s unparalleled quality of life. Prior to becoming Mayor, Michael Hancock
served on the Denver City Council for eight years, including two as City Council President. In his early
career, he worked for the Denver Housing Authority and National Civic League, and was the youngest
President of an Urban League chapter in America. Mayor Hancock is 44 years old and the proud father of
three children: Alayna, Jordan and Janae. He and his wife, Mary, have been married for more than 20
years.
Keynote
Dr. Barbara Jackson, Denver University
Presentation: Design-build really done right takes more than best practices, tools and technology. To
deliver truly integrated design and construction solutions requires a transformed cultural underpinning that
very few AEC firms can demonstrate or relate to. As an industry, the top down, command and control
culture is often still the norm at the project level despite the implementation of technology and best
practices, because it is still the norm at the organizational level of most companies within our industry.
Taking people who come from very traditional, hierarchical work environments, and placing them on
design-build teams where a culture of open communication, full transparency, and trust is the expectation
is truly akin to trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. This is what makes it difficult to fully optimize
the strategies and tactics that facilitate collaboration. This session will address this cultural dichotomy and
its impact on project level success even with the implementation of various tools, techniques, and best
practices intended to facilitate the design-build process.
Bio: Dr. Jackson is the Director of the Franklin L. Burns School of Real Estate and Construction
Management at Daniels College of Business at Denver University. She joined Daniels from California
Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she was a professor in the College of Architecture
and Environmental Design’s Construction Management Department and director of the California Center
for Construction Education. Jackson’s professional and academic experience spans real estate
development, homebuilding, commercial construction, project management, and facilities management
and operations. Jackson has received numerous awards, including the Service Recognition Award from
the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Building Operations and the Certificate of Appreciation
for the South Pacific Division, Regional Business Center, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Description of Session: How to find and develop the best project team utilizing the unique attributes that
Young Professionals (YP’s) bring to the table. YP’s are inherently more opened minded towards the
Design Build process simply because they have not had as much exposure / ingraining of the Design –
Bid-Build process. This allows them to bring an instant positive energy to the group, as well as innovative
approaches to overcoming inner team dynamic hurdles. So how does a Young Professional become a
driving force behind creating a Design Build team? In this session, we will explore the fundamentals of
building highly functioning teams, DBIA Best Practices as it relates to Team Building, team building pitfalls
to avoid, and what it takes to become an affect team builder / leader. The presentation will be followed up
with a panel discussion through executive level managers on how the Young Professionals of today can
develop their team building skills today to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Mike Buell, CCI Mechanical, Inc.
Michael T. Buell has been a strategic marketing and client development professional in the A/E/C industry
over the last 22+ years. He has worked with construction, architecture and engineering consulting firms
from small to global in size. Throughout his tenure, Michael has continued to build strong relationships
with clients, colleagues and peers alike from coast to coast. Whether for his firm at any given time or for
the thousands of marketing and technical staff he has lead training sessions for, Michael’s number one
goal has always been to help others build stronger and more abundent client relationships. Michael broke
into the A/E/C industry in 1992 with a small general construction firm in Cincinnati, Ohio. While leading all
marketing and sales efforts, he also took great pride in learning the industry and more specifically, learning
how to read a set of construction documents. In addition to construction services, this company also
became a commercial development firm in which Michael was responsible for securing tenants and
negotiating contracts for multi-unit commercial facilities. During this tenure, Michael helped the firm
quintuple in annual project volume. In 1998, Michael looked to join the design side to gain a different
perspective. Working with regional, national and global architecture and engineering firms has brought
great depth of experience, knowledge and understanding of how architects and engineers can be most
successful. Because of Michael’s efforts, each of these firms gained much improved branding presence,
successful experience in new vertical markets and a better understanding of what clients really care
about. Presently, Michael is leading the client development and corporate marketing efforts for a highly
respected full service design-build mechanical construction firm. To enhance his position in the designbuild market, Michael is also the reigning chair of DBIA Utah leading its statewide efforts. As well, Michael
is the Fellow Champion for SMPS Utah. Throughout Michael’s career, he has taken hold of numerous
leadership opportunities with SMPS. Co-founding the Northeast Ohio chapter; chairing the hugely
successful inaugural Heartland Regional Conference; and co-creating and being a lead instructor for their
Business Development Institute are the accomplishments of which Michael is most proud. Michael’s
educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising Management, along with
specializations in Marketing and History, from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. In addition to his
professional career and the many speaking engagements he continues to hold throughout the country,
Michael enjoys performing with community theaters, lecturing at church, coaching youth football, client
golf, and hiking in the mountains. Above all, however, he cherishes his time with his wife Patty and
children Chase, 12 and Katie, 11.
