1 About Bavaria
1.1 General information on Bavaria
Bavaria, with its capital city Munich, home to 12.69 million inhabitants, is located in the southeast of
Germany at the very heart of Europe. The lifestyle in Bavaria is one of the state’s trump cards helping it
maintain its lead role as the undisputed number one tourist destination in Germany. Bavaria offers a
variety of options unparalleled throughout the whole of Germany: mountains and forests, lakes and rivers,
plains and alpine heights. Bavaria has everything: nature, culture, age old traditions and state-of-the-art, a
fashionable lifestyle and an abundance of adventure tourism.
Unique diversity
Unparalleled in its diversity, Bavaria is a region of outstanding natural beauty with a healthy climate,
unspoilt natural environment, a wealth of culture amongst the best in Europe, exclusive all-year-round
sporting opportunities and an attractive range of wellness and health services and facilities in 51 spa
resorts. All this is underscored by amazingly friendly hotels and restaurants in all categories from budget
right through to deluxe.
Location
 located in the southeast of Germany
 largest of Germany’s 16 federal states
 covers almost one-fifth of Germany’s total land area
 has an area of over 350,000 square kilometers
 borders Austria, the Czech Republic and Switzerland (across Lake Constance)
 neighboring German states: Baden-Wuerttemberg, Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony
Landscape
The landscape of Bavaria can be subdivided into four major regions:
 the Alps, with the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany
 the Alpine foothills with their numerous lakes
 the Eastern Bavarian central mountains with the first ever national park in Germany
 the Swabian-Franconian cuesta landscape
Cities
Whatever the season - Bavaria’s cities are always worth a visit. Historic centers, churches, castles, great
shopping, events, museums, exhibitions, regional culinary specialties all ensure that Bavaria’s cities are
attractive places to visit with plenty going on. The capital city of Bavaria is Munich. Other major cities in
Bavaria include: Nuremberg, Augsburg, Regensburg, Ingolstadt, Würzburg, Fürth and Erlangen.
The Bavarian “Way of Life”
“Live and let live“ is the motto in Bavaria. Whatever the time of year there is always some sort of custom
being celebrated as traditional festivals are very much an integral part of Bavarian life. These deep routed
links to cultural customs and to past are reflected not only in the careful attention paid to historic sites and
buildings but also in the day-to-day Bavarian lifestyle.
Bavarian language
Bavarian belongs to the Upper German languages spoken in the south of Germany. Innumerable German
dialects are spoken in Bavaria. In the administrative regions to the north the Franconian dialect is
prevalent, in Swabia the local dialect is Swabian, a thread of the Alemannic dialect family. In the Upper
Palatinate people speak the Northern Bavarian dialect that can vary regionally. In Upper and Lower Bavaria
(Middle) Bavarian is the predominant dialect

1.3 Bavaria’s four regions
Allgäu / Bavarian Swabia
Eastern Bavaria
Sun-drenched Allgäu is a colourful paradise of
pure relaxation with gently rolling Alpine
foothills, crystal clear lakes, lush green meadows
and mountain peaks: recuperation for both body
and soul – a land of phenomenal beauty. Little
wonder that King Ludwig II chose the Allgäu in
which to realise his dream of a Utopian world and
build his fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein.
But the Allgäu is not just for those wanting to rest
and relax; it is also an absolute paradise for
anyone looking for a more active type of holiday.
Whether you enjoy hiking, cycling, water sports
or skiing, you will never be at a loss for
something to do in the Allgäu. Cultural highlights
include the Benedictine abbey in Ottobeuren – an
unparalleled work of art and one of the most
outstanding baroque buildings in the whole of
Europe.
The Roman remains in Kempten and Augsburg,
the intact mediaeval town walls of Nördlingen
and a range of magnificent town halls in
erstwhile imperial free cities bear witness to the
Bavarian Swabia’s rich cultural past. Visitors to
the area love the region’s culinary delicacies –
particularly the cheese specialities – that make a
perfect holiday complete.
Natural beauty, limestone cliffs and drip-stone
caves, halcyon river valleys, deciduous forests
of all colours and hues, crystal clear lakes and
stunning panoramas. Comprising the largest
area of forestation in Central Europe Eastern
Bavaria is home to Europe’s green canopy
comprising the Bavarian Forest (Germany’s
very first national park), the Upper Palatinate
Forest, the Bavarian Jura and Southern Lower
Bavaria. Lots of unspoilt countryside to walk,
cycle or ride through. Discover the romantic
wild east and experience lynx and bear first
hand.
The Danube and the towns along its banks
form a cultural vein flowing right through
Eastern Bavaria. State-of-the-art town life in
perfect harmony with historical monuments
dominated by some of the most impressive
sacred buildings ever built such as St. Peter’s
Cathedral in Regensburg or the highest brick
built tower in the world situated in Landshut,
and spectacular baroque buildings in Passau
and Waldsassen.
Ancient customs and traditions and conviviality
play an important role at the traditional
festivities held throughout the region where
delicacies containing produce from Eastern
Bavaria’s woods, lakes and rivers are served.

Franconia
Upper Bavaria
A fascinating holiday region, comprising 16 very
distinctive areas. Nowhere else are there so many
– 140 in total – charming cities and towns
fashioned over centuries by European art and
history.
A large number of cycle routes, spread throughout
the region ensure that cycle fans can always find
just the right sort of tour regardless of whether
they want to go on an ordinary cycle tour, a
mountain bike tour or a racing route. Franconia
has a total of nine national parks stretching from
the Rhön and Spessart to the Altmühl nature
reserve. These parks contain a wealth of forests,
rivers and lakes, mountains and meadows, sun
drenched wine slopes and extensive hiking areas.
Enjoy a dry, light, refreshing Sylvaner from the
wine growing areas along the river Main or a glass
of golden beer. After all, no other area anywhere
in the world has a higher concentration of
breweries than Franconia!
Franconia has no fewer than 17 health resorts and
spas all equipped with natural healing resources,
experienced health experts and modern spa
concepts focusing on the well-being of their
guests. Franconia is the place to go to rest and
recuperate, to experience something new and to
have fun.
Magnificent mountain scenery, gently rolling
foothills, moraine hills, far-reaching plains,
rivers and some 200 lakes make this region
particularly spectacular. Upper Bavaria – 16
areas of unique diversification, towns full of art
and culture with the state capital and cultural
centre of Munich at the fore, and a wealth of
world-class things to see.
Anyone interested in art and culture is spoilt for
choice. Upper Bavaria has an excellent variety
of museums and art exhibitions. A number of
world-class painters, including Marc and
Kandinsky, lived and worked in Upper Bavaria.
The “Blauer Reiter” school of painting was
founded in the town of Murnau. Visitors to the
state can also enjoy a wide variety of concerts
staged in the region’s castles, churches and
monasteries as well as picturesque landscape,
plenty of good, clean air all mixed together with
Bavaria’s inimitable hospitality.
Anyone looking for a bit of rejuvenation and
relaxation is in the right place: come to Upper
Bavaria for that unforgettable ‘feel-good’
holiday. The range of sports and leisure
activities on offer is also extremely
comprehensive ranging from extreme sports
through to gentles strolls, swimming and cycle
tours.

3.5 Rivers and lakes
What Bavaria lacks in shoreline, it makes up for in rivers and lakes. When summer temperatures climb to
30 degrees the numerous beautiful beaches are a great way to cool down whilst you lie back and enjoy the
breathtaking scenery and plan your next walk or cycle ride.
Rivers
Danube
The Danube is Europe’s second longest river. It originates in the town of Donaueschingen - which is in the
Black Forest of Germany - at the confluence of the rivers Brigach and Breg. The Danube then flows
southeast, passing through four Central European capitals before emptying into the Black Sea. The section
flowing through Bavaria is definitely one of its prettiest. River cruisers tie up in both Regensburg and
Passau. In the Weltenburger Enge Nature Reserve the Danube has to squeeze its way through its
narrowest section flanked by majestically soaring vertical cliffs past the baroque gem of Weltenburg
Abbey, home to the oldest monastic brewery in the world, and past the Kelheim’s Hall of Liberation
(Befreiungshalle). Further important tourist spots along the Danube include the Walhalla, the Stone Bridge
of Regensburg and St Stephan’s cathedral in Passau. The Danube Bike Trail (also called Danube Cycle Path
or the Donauradweg) is a bicycle trail along the river.

Main
With a length of 527 km the Main is the most significant right tributary of the Rhine. The Main flows
through the German states of Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg (forming the border with Bavaria for some
distance) and Hesse. It begins near Kulmbach in Franconia at the junction of its two headstreams, the Red
Main and the White Main. The Red Main rises in the Franconian Jura mountain range and runs through
Creussen and Bayreuth. The White Main rises in the mountains of the Fichtelgebirge. In its upper and
middle section it runs in valleys of the German Highlands. In its lower section it crosses the Lower Main
Lowlands to Wiesbaden, where it discharges into the Rhine River. Major tributaries of the Main are the
Regnitz, the Franconian Saale and the Tauber.

Inn
The Inn is a river in Switzerland, Austria and Germany. It is a right tributary of the Danube and 517 km long.
The source is located in the Swiss Alps, west of St. Moritz in the Engadin region. It runs north-eastwards,
entering Austria, and from Landeck eastwards through the Austrian state of Tyrol and crosses the border
into Bavaria near Kufstein. On Bavarian territory the river runs northwards and passes Rosenheim,
Wasserburg am Inn, and Waldkraiburg; then it turns east, runs through Mühldorf and Neuötting and is
enlarged by two major tributaries, the Alz and the Salzach. From here to the Danube, it forms the border
between Germany (Bavaria) and Austria (Upper Austria). In Passau the Inn finally enters the Danube (as
does the Ilz river there).

Lakes
Chiemsee
The largest lake in Bavaria is the Chiemsee, which is also known as the “Bavarian Sea”. The name has a
kernel of truth in it: not only does the lake, which has an area of 80 square kilometers, have tides like the
sea, it also originated from the primeval Thetis Sea, which once covered almost half of Europe. It has three
islands – Herreninsel, Fraueninsel and uninhabited Krautinsel – which all benefit from frequent ferry
connections to the mainland. On Herreninsel King Ludwig II built the royal Palace of Herrenchiemsee, while
Fraueninsel has an 8th century Benedictine convent and some of the best Bavarian restaurants.

Mountain lakes
Lake Eibsee at the foot of the Zugspitze (Germany’s highest mountain) is situated approximately 100 km
southwest of Munich and near the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The lake has a surface elevation of 973
meters and its surface area is 195 hectares. The panorama around Lake Eibsee is breathtakingly beautiful
and the crystal-clear water in the lake is amazing; the color of the lake varies from deep blue to turquoise.
This entire area is ideal for hiking and biking in the summer and for every winter sport imaginable.

The emerald-green Königssee near Berchtesgaden is surrounded by steep walls of rock, with the 1800meter east wall of the Watzmann towering above its west shore. Around eight kilometers long and over a
kilometer across at its widest point, and with a depth of up to 190 meters, the lake occupies the whole
valley between the Watzmann in the west and the Jenner and Gotzenberg in the east. St Bartholomew’s
Church in front of the east wall of the Watzmann, is a cultural highlight in this unspoilt countryside. The
area is particularly popular among walkers with its excellent network of hiking trails.

Starnberg Five-Lake-Region
Five lakes gave the region its name and each has its own character. This applies to the three smaller ones
– placid Wörthsee, romantic Pilsensee and idyllic Weßlinger See – equally as well as to the large ones.
The 57-square-kilometer Lake Starnberg is around 20 kilometers long, five kilometers wide and up to 127
meters deep. It is bordered by moraine hills. Walkers can explore the beauty of the landscape and the
various sights on the path that follows long stretches of the shore. Among the best-known towns and
villages on the lake are Starnberg, Seeshaupt, Bernried, Tutzing and Feldafing with Rose Island. Pleasure
boats circumnavigate Lake Starnberg on three-hour trips, stopping at little villages once visited by King
Ludwig II. Water-skiers come here, as do cyclists: you can rent wheels and do the 50 km circular route
around the lake.
Lake Ammersee is surrounded by wooded moraine hills. When the föhn wind is blowing, the Alps to the
south look much nearer and form a magnificent backdrop. Numerous marked hiking trails enable the
visitor to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding countryside to the full. The lake is just under 50 square
kilometers in area and has a circumference of over 42 kilometers. The conditions for many different water
sports (sailing, boat hire, swimming etc.) are ideal. There are also many attractive towns and villages,
including Herrsching with its romantic palace, the “Kurparkschlösschen”, Diessen, dominated by St Mary’s
Minster, Schondorf and Utting with the “Old Villa”, Rodenhauser Park and Mathias and Anna-Sophie
Gasteiger’s House. A further main attraction is Andechs Monastery.

Alpine region Tegernsee and Schliersee
Lake Tegernsee with its emerald water is up to 72 meters deep. The five small towns of Tegernsee, Gmund,
Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern and Kreuth are dotted along the lakeside, which can be easily explored on a
round-trip by bicycle. The 21-kilometer long stretch is mostly on level ground and follows the waterside.
Throughout the year, the ships of the Bayerischen Seenschifffahrt cross the six kilometer-long and two
kilometer-wide lake. One can stop off at, for example, Bad Wiessee, which not only has one of the longest
traffic-calmed lake promenades but also spring waters known to have healing properties.
A few kilometers further on at Lake Schliersee, one can explore the sea from a paddleboat, which is great
fun in the summer. Those who would like to cool off with a Bavarian beer can do so on the island of Wörth
– or in one of the innumerable traditional Bavarian beer gardens. Those interested in culture can visit the
St Sixtus church, with its 15th century “Gnadenstuhl” (Mercy seat) by the renowned south German sculptor
Erasmus Grasser.

Lakes in the Allgäu
The Greater Alpsee lake is the largest natural lake in the Allgäu and forms the focus for all of the region’s
water sports. Whether you enjoy fishing, sailing, surfing or just splashing about, everything is possible!
Those who want to enjoy the water without actually getting their feet wet can take out a paddle boat, a
rowing boat or go on the “Santa Maria Loreto” - a “Lädine” - a historic replica of a medieval trading ship.
From the castles of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein there is a splendid view of the Alpsee. It covers
an area of almost one square kilometer, with just under five kilometers of shoreline and a depth of up to 62
meters. The lake nestles between wooded mountain slopes in an area of unspoilt natural beauty, which
was already popular in the 19th century - the Bavarian kings built their romantic castles here on sites
originally occupied by the strongholds of medieval knights. Today there is a wide variety of hiking trails in
the vicinity, and on almost all of them you are following in royal footsteps. The “Fürstenstrasse” (Princes’
Road) leads from Hohenschwangau over the Schwarzenberg ridge and down to Pinswang in the Lechtal.
Only a short walk away from Hohenschwangau Castle is the little Swan Lake (Schwansee). This sleepy lake
is attractively set in the Allgäu mountains. A path around two kilometers long leads round the completely
unspoilt shore.
Lake Constance (Bodensee) is located on the northern edge of the Alps, where the borders of Germany,
Austria and Switzerland come together. With an area of 539 square kilometers, it is the third-largest inland
lake in Central Europe. A particularly beautiful, 18-kilometer stretch of the shore belongs to Bavaria.
Historic towns such as Nonnenhorn, Wasserburg and Lindau are among the attractions of this area.

Upper Palatinate Forest – “Land of 1,000 Lakes”
The Upper Palatinate Forest is known as the “Land of 1,000 lakes”. Actually, it is home to 4,700 lakes that
were established back in the Middle Ages by monks. Today the region is a unique natural biotope
providing a habitat to a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Lake Steinberger is ideal for lovers of water sports and offers a wide range of some of the most attractive
and state-of-the-art wakeboarding and waterskiing facilities in Germany.
The region also offers a true speciality for fishermen and gourmets alike – the Upper Palatinate carp.
Autumn is the highlight of the fisherman’s year. Themed “Fish” weeks get any fisherman’s heart racing
and fish and art lovers alike can set off in search of the fantastic carp for which Landkreis Tirschenreuth is
well known.

4 Culture
4.1 Cities in Bavaria
Allgäu / Bavarian Swabia
Augsburg
Augsburg is a modern city of fairs and congresses, with flair of a 2000-year-old free imperial city. Of
special interest: at the heart of the city center with its Renaissance character, the City Hall, the Perlach
Tower and the Augustus fountain, Maximilianstrasse, southern Germany’s most beautiful boulevard with
its Mercury and Hercules fountains, Schaezler Palace and St Ulrich churches. A walk through the Fuggerei,
the oldest social settlement in the world, is an absolute must for any visitor. The cathedral district, the old
town crisscrossed with canals, and the birthplaces of the writer Bertolt Brecht and of the ancestors of
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are further tourist attractions.

Füssen
Situated at the southern end of the Romantic Road, lies the 700-year-old medieval town of Füssen. The
town’s charming location on the edge of the Alps is impressive: framed in by imposing high mountain
peaks and an idyllic lake district, at an altitude of 800 - 1200 meters, the ideal starting point for visiting the
royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau four kilometers away. The Hohes Schloss of
Füssen, the former summer residence of the prince bishops of Augsburg and one of South-Germany’s
largest and best preserved late gothic castle complexes, is Füssen’s landmark.

Kempten
Kempten, the Allgäu’s main town, has a 2000-year-old history. Roman times are brought to life at
Cambodunum Archaeological Park. The townscape reflects the centuries of co-existence between the
former Protestant Imperial City (today’s old town) and the Catholic Kempten of the Prince-Abbots (Residenz
palace and St Lawrence’s Basilica). Furthermore the “Burghalde”, one of the oldest sites with open-air
theatre or the “Marstall” (Court Stable) with Europe’s largest museum of Alpine history are well worth
seeing. A wide choice of restaurants, interesting culture and excellent shopping opportunities complete
the range of delights Kempten has to offer.

The Kneipp spa resort of Ottobeuren lies in the western Günz valley. The town’s history dates back to two
important periods, firstly to 764 when Benedictine monks chose to establish their order here and secondly
1821 when Father Sebastian Kneipp was born in the hamlet of Stephansried that belongs to the parish of
Ottobeuren. The 18th century abbey is the largest and best preserved religious complex in the whole of
Germany. Both the “Jakobsweg” trail and the “Crescentia” pilgrimage trail run straight through
Ottobeuren. Whilst at the abbey be sure to pay a visit to the library, the “Kaisersaal” and the museum that

Nördlingen
Nördlingen, on the “Romantic Road”, is one of the few towns still to have a fully preserved town wall that
you can walk around. This 2.7 km stroll around the town defenses passed numerous towers and gates
affords many a great view of Nördlingen’s romantic little alleyways. As one approaches from afar
Nördlingen is clearly identifiable by its skyline dominated by the late Gothic church of St George whose
bell tower is lovingly called the “Daniel” by the people of the town. The top of the “Daniel” is just perfect
for enjoying panoramic views of the medieval town and the Ries crater that was created some 15 million
years ago by a meteorite impact. Nördlingen boasts a unique nightly event: all through the year as the sun
begins to set the town’s night watchman climbs to the very top of the “Daniel” where his cry of “So G’sell
so” echoes out across the rooftops of the town. Back in 2009, Nördlingen became part of the “cittaslow”
international network of towns that are striving to preserve and protect their hometown’s unique qualities,
the surrounding countryside and the authenticity of their regional produce.

Passau
Passau has a central geographical location within the tri-state-area of Germany, Austria and Czech
Republic. The three rivers – Danube, Inn and Ilz - lend the city on the Three-River-Conjunction-Point its
unique beauty. Passau was a Roman provincial town for over 400 years. Italian Baroque masters created
today’s city skyline, with its southern European flair. One of the most striking buildings is cathedral of St
Stephan, which boasts the world’s biggest church organ. Besides St Stephan other buildings like the New
Bishop’s Palace, Veste Oberhaus Castle, Town Hall, Niedernburg Nunnery and Maria Hilf Pilgrimage Church
describe Passau’s history. Moreover, one of the best ways to enjoy the magic of Passau is a sightseeing
tour by ship. The local shipping company offers “three-river” city tours and excursion into the Bavarian and

Landshut
Here, Gothic magic meets the lively atmosphere of a modern, flourishing city. In the heart of the town, the
two boulevards of the Old and New Town run parallel to each other. They boast houses and buildings of
different styles, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance-Baroque. At one end of the Old Town lies a
landmark of Landshut: St Martin’s Church, which has the world’s highest brick tower. There is a nice walk
called “oxway” leading from the Old Town up a mountain to Trausnitz Castle. Dating back to 1204, it was
constantly expanded and offers a lot to discover. In addition, there is a fantastic panoramic view of the city
and the Isar River from the castle’s balconies. Other sights downtown include the city hall with its large,
ornate ceremonial room. And the ducal residence is known as the first Italian Renaissance palace built
north of the Alps. Landshut is also home to the largest European Middle Ages festival – the Landshut
Wedding. Every four years, the marriage of Duke George and Hedwig, the daughter of the king of Poland, is

in Bayreuth and although he died in Venice his final resting place is in the garden of Villa “Wahnfried”, the
house he lived in. Today this classicist villa on the edge of the court garden houses the Richard Wagner
Museum - an absolute must for anyone interested in culture. Bayreuth - Upper Franconia’s largest city principally reflects the baroque period of architecture. Over 400 years ago Bayreuth became the
residential city of the Margraves and the then Margarine, Prussian Princess Wilhelmina, presented the city
with numerous palaces and parks as well as the Margravial Opera House that today is not only considered
to be the most beautiful baroque theatre in Europe but has also joined the list for the UNESCO world
heritage sites. Further notable sights are the new palace and court garden in the historic city center and
the hermitage, old palace, orangery and sun temple with its grottos and fountains. But there is far more to
the lovable, lively city of Bayreuth than just its historic sights: the city also has a buzzing cultural scene
and a wealth of restaurants, bars, bistros and street-side cafés all bestowing the city with its inimitable
Mediterranean flair.

Rothenburg
With its splendid location and charming medieval atmosphere hardly any other town is able to captivate its
visitors in quite the same way as Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A walk through this small town is an
unforgettable encounter with bygone centuries. The imposing building of the Town Hall, stately towers,
massive fortifications, churches and patrician houses are witnesses to a mighty imperial past. An imperial
castle dating back to 1142 represents the beginning of the town. Elevated to a Free Imperial City in 1274,
Rothenburg became one of the most important city states of the Middle Ages. In 1631, during the Thirty
Years’ War, Rothenburg was taken by imperial troops. Ex-Mayor Nusch saved the town by drinking nearly
13 cups of wine in a single gulp, the so-called “Master draught”. Nowadays Rothenburg, situated in
Western Franconia, is one of the most visited towns in Europe. Its richness of old medieval buildings and
museums - such as the famous Criminal Museum and the Imperial City Museum - explains Rothenburg’s
reputation as one of the most attractive destinations in Germany.

Coburg
The Upper Franconian town of Coburg is situated between the Upper Main Valley to the south and the
Thuringian Forest to the north in what is known as the green heart of Germany. Thanks to the dukes who
once lived in the town this erstwhile seat of royal power now enjoys a unique heritage of art treasures and
beautiful buildings. But it was the former Sax-Coburg and Gotha duchy’s cunning marriage politics that
earned it world renown. Owing to the fact that there are many castles and palaces in Coburg and its
surrounding areas, the town is rightfully located on the so-called “Castle Road” (Burgenstraße). Many
famous people have spent time here: Richard Strauss, Hektor Berlioz, Nicol Paganini, Franz Liszt, Friedrich
Rückert, Jean Paul, Queen Victoria and Martin Luther. Visitors to Coburg can enjoy a wealth of art and
culture including events of both modern and classical music, open air events on Coburg’s Schloßplatz,
opera, operettas, revues, ballet, theater in the royal Coburg theater, and Europe’s largest Samba festival.
Other firm fixtures in Coburg’s annual calendar include the "Vogelschießen“ fair, the “Schloßplatz” festival
(also known as “North Bavaria’s largest gourmet party”), the Coburg “Marktfest”, the “Museum Night” and
the Coburg Christmas market.

Dinkelsbühl
The former Free Imperial town of Dinkelsbühl, with its distinctive townscape, lies in the idyllic Wörnitz
Valley. Dinkelsbühl’s perfectly preserved town walls and magnificent patrician houses, which include the
“Hezelhof” and the “Deutsche Haus”, are a reminder of Dinkelsbühl’s glorious era in the 15th and 16th
century. Dinkelsbühl’s industrious craftsmen and flourishing trading activities enhanced its wealth, with
the town’s fortifications and 16 towers providing protection from attack. St George’s Minster, one of the
most beautiful hall churches in Germany, was build at the intersection of the old trade routes. Worth
seeing are also the Old Town Hall, House of Teutonic Order, Market Square & Gustav Adolf House, Town
Mill and the “Romantic Citywalk” along the outer city wall. Artists discovered the picturesque nooks,
crannies and alleyways of the old town in the last century and now visitors from all over the world flock to
the medieval town to get a taste of its vibrant ambiance.

Altötting
Altötting is located in the lovely Upper Bavarian Alpine region, not far from Salzburg and Lake Chiemsee.
For more than 1250 years this town has been the spiritual center of Bavaria and for more than 500 years
the most significant place of pilgrimage in Germany in veneration of the Virgin Mary. Due to the strong
feeling which the Bavarian people and their sovereigns have for the “sanctuary of our Lady of Altötting” (of
the blessed Virgin), Altötting was given the surname “Heart of Bavaria”. Joseph Ratzinger, who grew up in
the Inn-Salzach region, remained closely connected to the Shrine in Altötting since his childhood. In
Altötting guest can explore the city trough a guided tour or enjoy a weekend stay in the footsteps of Pope
Benedict. From May to October numerous pilgrimages, festive church services and candlelight processions
(always Saturday night) take place here.

Oberammergau
This small Bavarian community, with about 5,000 inhabitants located within the Ammergau Alps, owes its
world-famous reputation to the impressive Passion Plays that have been performed every ten years in the
town since 1634. The famous town of Oberammergau also shows how inextricably linked a handicraft is to
the history of its town. In principle a stroll through the town is almost like walking through a museum. The
colourful and attractive frescos know as “Lüftlmalereien” that adorn the facades of the houses relate the
history of the 500-year-old handicraft of wood carving. On every street corner and in every alleyway are
wood carving shops selling an amazing array of nativity scenes, angels, Madonnas, crosses and figures of
the saints. From the peaks of the local mountains visitors can enjoy a spectacular view of the fabulous
“King-Ludwig Country” with its fairy tale castles of Neuschwanstein and Linderhof.

Miraculously located in the beautiful setting of an Alpine valley, the Pilgrimage church of Wies is one of the
few 18th century churches to have been preserved in its original state, and its stunning interior is a

legacy of magnificent buildings across the state for us to enjoy. From medieval fortresses to splendid
summer palaces – there are castles for every taste. Most sites are open all year and have a special

4.4 Royal Bavaria and the Fairy tale King
Bavaria was proclaimed kingdom in the Treaty of Preßburg between the German emperor and Napoleon in
1805. It remained a kingdom until 1918, and the borders of today’s state Bavaria were established in 1814
by the Treaty of Paris. The most famous of Bavaria’s six kings was Ludwig II., who ruled the kingdom from
1864 until 1882. He is called the Swan King and the Fairy Tale King due to his passion for art and
extravagant architectural projects, such as the world famous Neuschwanstein Castle.

4.5 Festivals and Customs
An annual event calendar chock-full of festivities show just how much Bavarians love any excuse for a
celebration. Traditional festivities are held right across the state throughout the year, these include the
Oktoberfest, the world’s largest folk festival, as well as numerous regional festivals many of which are
based on the church calendar.

Hornschlittenrennen (traditional sledge race)
A "Hornschlitten" is a traditional sledge which
allowed the transportation of hay and wood down
into the valley during winter times in earlier days.
Today, mostly around carnival time, there are some
spots in the Bavarian and Allgaeu Alps where
people, sometimes in costumes, race down the hill
and over big jumps.

Fasching (Carnival)
Carnival in Bavaria begins in early January and ends at Shrove Tuesday. There are a lot of different traditions all over
Bavaria. In some regions people wear old masks ("Larven") which make them look like demons and in processions
the noisy crowd intends to drive out the winter. In other regions people wear costumes and ski down hills or take part
in a "Hornschlittenrennen" as mentioned above.
March/ April
Strong Beer Season
Strong lent beer had already been served during this period of carneval since the mid 15th century. Monks brewed
lent beer, because they weren't allowed to eat during this period. All these strong beers have the suffix "-ator" in
their name, like: "Delicator", "Triumphator", "Animator" and so on. One of the most famous events during the
Starkbierzeit (Strong Beer Saison in Bavaria) takes place at the "Nockerberg" where a barrel of "Salvator" is tapped
and the politicians have to face their critics in a very humorous way - which is called "Derblecken".
Easter
In true Bavarian style Easter is celebrated with a mixture of ancient traditions and 21st century goodies:
“Palmbüscheln” to be blessed on Palm Sunday, Easter Bunny (Osterhase), coloured eggs, kids searching for eggs
kindly left by the “Osterhase”, roast lamb lunch, Easter lamb cake and more. The decoration of the Easter wells,
perhaps the most charming custom in the Fränkische Schweiz, has experienced a great revival in the last few years
and has become a popular attraction. The main reason for decorating the wells and springs lies primarily in the
significance of water as the life-giving element for the arid plateaux of the Franconian Alps.

Georgiritt in Traunstein
Every year on Easter Monday the traditional “Horse Pilgrimage” in honour of the St. Georg takes place in Traunstein
(Chiemgau/Upper Bavaria). Up to 400 equestrians ride with their decorated horses to the
little church of Ettendorf, where they circle the church and where their horses are consecrated. The horsemen are
escorted by a group of musicians wearing historical costumes and playing fanfares, bells, drums and pipes.
May/ June
1st May - Maibaum aufstellen (Maypole raising)
Every year there is fierce competition between the towns and cities in Bavaria for where the highest (some up to over
90 feet) and most majestic pole is elected. The Maypole can look different in each region. In some places it is planted
with the tree bark, and in others it is stripped and painted blue-and-white, hung with colorful ribbons, decorated with
carved figures and adorned with a wreath. The pole is erected by without technical assistance just with thick, long
rods (“Schaibeln”) bound together into “Scheren”. This work can stretch out over two hours. In neighbouring
communities the young men's associations often try to steal the maypole. According to a custom the stolen pole has
to be redeemed by a ransom consisting of beer and food which both communities share together.
Pfingsten (Whitsun)
Bavaria celebrates very interesting customs and festivals at Whitsun. In Kötzting (Bavarian Forest) hundreds of riders
on decorated horses move to a small church outside the town and all the way back. Other Whitsun Rides are held for
example in Sankt Englmar (Bavarian Forest) and in Ochsenfurt (Franconia) where beside the ride the "Bratwurstfest"
(franconian speciality). And, of course, there are also some beerfestivals around Whitsun, for example the "Erlanger
Bergkirchweih" (Mountain Church Consecration Fair).
Meistertrunk (The Master's Draught) in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Every Whitsun this event is recreated when hundreds of citizens dress up in period costume and take part in the
"Master Draught", as well as a historical procession and a variety of military camps.
Sonnwendfeiern (Midsummer/Solstice Festivals)
The night before summer officially starts (June 21st of each year), the sun reaches its zenith. In heathen times
summer has been welcomed by many fires on hills and mountains. Nowadays these old customs are more and more
re-established. So you can enjoy some wonderful Midsummer Festivals in the Bavarian and Allgaeu mountains with
the surrounding peaks illuminated by small fires.
Landshuter Hochzeit (Landshut wedding)
The former capital of Bavaria makes history come alive:
Every four years far more than 2000 citizens revive with
enthusiasm the whole splendour of the late Middle Ages
wearing costumes tailored true to the original. Celebrations
take place on four weekends during three weeks: The
wedding of the Polish King´s daughter Hedwig to the Duke
of Wittelsbach George of Bavaria-Landshut.

Kinderzeche Dinkelsbühl - One of the oldest historic Festivals in Germany
(since 1897)
During 30 Years War (1618 - 1648) broad parts of Germany have been
destroyed, while the mediaeval city of Dinkelsbühl has been left in good
condition. This is because of the children of Dinkelsbühl who plead for
favour with the swedish colonel. For more than 100 years Dinkelsbühl is
celebrating its rescue with a festival where the whole story is performed
again. And the city still shows its grateful appreciation for their help by
giving coloured bags with sweets to all children taking part in the
procession.

Viehscheid or Almabtrieb
(an autumn cattle-drive from the high alpine pastures)
In early september the cows are driven back downhill. The lead cows (only one per herd) are adorned with
ornamental head-dresses and huge clanking bells. By doing so, people celebrate their safe return in towns and
villages.
Oktoberfest in Munich
This festival, taking place always in the last two weeks of September and
the first week of October, is the largest folk festival in the world and
certainly the most famous among the Bavarian festivals. The festival has its
origin in the marriage of crown prince Ludwig, the future Ludwig I. Today
the area contains 14 tents, which offer the visitor Bavarian specialities (the
famous Brezn, grilled chicken…), the famous beer and a large number of
rides.

November/ December
Kirchweih (Parish Fair)
The official date of the Parish Fair is the third Sunday in October, but especially in Franconia a lot of parishes still
have their individual dates (saint’s day of the patron saint of the church). This day is celebrated with a culinary
specialities “Kirchweihnudeln” (kermis doughnuts) and kermis gooses. Some famous examples are the
“Bergkirchweih” in Erlangen and the “Sandkerwa” in Bamberg.
Christkindlmärkte (Christmas markets)
Traditional German Christmas markets are becoming more and more famous among tourists. Just think about the
world famous Nuremberg Christkindlsmarkt, the mulled wine (Glühwein), the gingerbread (Lebkuchen) and all the
other typical stuff. Most Christmas markets in Bavaria start in the last week of November and last until two or three
days before Christmas Eve.
"Sylvester" and New Years Eve
As the last vestiges of Christmas goose are finished up it’s time to get ready to welcome in the New Year. In Bavaria,
however you choose to celebrate you will find something just tailor-made for you. “Sylvester” - the German term for
New Year’s Eve that comes from the fact that the 31st December is St. Sylvester’s day – is celebrated with festivities
of all sizes from large gala dinners and balls to local festivities in cities, towns and villages across the state.
Wherever you choose to see in the New Year sparkling wine and fireworks are bound to feature prominently.

4.7 Christmas markets
Bavaria’s cities, towns and villages are filled with Christmas magic during the holiday season. The
Christmas Market season runs throughout the Advent period, more or less from the end of November to
the day before Christmas.
The markets are generally held in the Town Square and each has its own unique atmosphere. But common
threads include, decorated stalls heaped with traditional Christmas decorations, toys and gifts and the
aromas of mulled wine, grilled sausages, Christmas biscuits and gingerbread. St Nikolaus, the German
Santa Claus, often pays a visit. Christmas carol singing and Christmas concerts usually coincide with the
markets, which are generally open seven days a week and run well into the evenings.
The “Christkindlesmarkt” in Nuremberg is probably the most famous Christmas market in the world. There,
the Nuremberg Christmas Angel regularly joins the visitors and invites all the children to a free ride on the
nostalgia carrousel.
Nuremberg Christmas Angel © Stadt Nürnberg - Christine Dierenbach
Nevertheless, Bavaria is also rich in a variety of other Christmas markets. The fairs in Rothenburg ob der
Tauber, Regensburg, Füssen and at Lake Tegernsee rank among Bavaria’s loveliest and most beautiful
Christmas markets characterized by their traditional atmosphere.
But in Bavaria, you can also experience Christmas markets set in exceptional scenery. Stroll through the
stands of the floating Christmas market in Vilshofen, which takes place on the Danube river. Or visit the
Christmas market in Hauzenberg in the Bavarian Forest, which is set amidst a stone quarry. Or go to see
Bad Feilnbach woodland Advents, where some 50 stands nestle between the trees and the forest comes
alive with the gleam of thousands of lights and flaming torches.
Special offer: The Munich Christmas Market Pass includes a cup of hot mulled wine, a roll with a fried

4.9 Religious Cities and Places
The state's famed churches and other sacred buildings are still today important places of pilgrimage and
witnesses to the deeply held faith of the people of Bavaria. Many of the monasteries in Bavaria were
closed down during the secularisation of 1802/1803. From 1817 permission was once again given for new
monasteries to be founded.
Today Bavaria‘s monasteries have become important and attractive tourist landmarks. Most of them are
well preserved, still inhabited by their religious order and living witness to the state’s rich past.
Below you can find a list of important religious cities and places.

Benediktbeuren - Benedictine convent
Since its foundation around 740, the former Benedictine
convent belongs to one of the oldest of its kind in ancient
Bavaria and has all through its existence, been a treasure of
intellect and culture. Here, the popular “Carmina Burana”
(about 1230) were gathered, the painting stood here in full
blossom. The optical institute J. v. Utzschneiders was in
the secularised convent from 1805 to 1818. The production
method for precision lens was developed by Joseph von

Oberammergau - Convent of Ettal / Passion Plays
In fulfilment of a vow, following his healthy return to Bavaria,
Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria founded 1330, the Benedictine
convent of Ettal in the seclusion of the land of Werdenfels. The
Emperor did not survive his desire that the convent should not
only serve as home for
monks but also for knights and their spouses as well as
widows, for long. On the contrary, the convent succeeded in a
long-lasting period of blossoming. Today still, there are
Benedictines in Ettal. The knight-academy
founded in 1710 was converted into a high-school.

premonstratensian abbot of Steingaden was reason enough for
the establishment of a glittering sanctuary. The construction
works began in 1745 under the supervision of the popular
architect Dominikus Zimmermann. In the grassland on the base
of the Alps, he created one of the most perfected art works
of Bavarian rococo. The choir was sanctified in 1749 and the
church in 1754. The wasteful piece-ornamentation by Dominikus
Zimmermann and the ceiling painting of his brother Johann
Baptist Zimmermann, court artist of the Bavarian Electors
created a more buoyant and slightly agile decoration whose
richness and subtlety are unrivalled. The Wieskirche in
Steingaden, was accepted in the list of world heritage in 1983
as a masterpiece of the force of human creation and an extraordinary evidence of a lost culture.
Convent of Frauenchiemsee
The last Duke Tassilo III of Agilolfing founded a convent for
nuns around 766 on the second largest island of the Chiemsee.
In the period of Karolinger, it became an imperial collegiate
church, Irmengard, a daughter of Kind Ludwig of Germany,
functioned as an abbess. After dissolution in the course of
secularisation, Ludwig I re-established a Benedictine convent.
With their convent, the nuns today manage a conference centre
that is in popular demand.
Ottobeuren
Ottobeuren can be accessed above a mild fore-alpine highland
with generous fields, grassland and pastureland with dark,
forested hills cutting across it, while two striking peaks of
church towers signal the approach to the destination. Then, the
valley of western Gunz opens up and exposes a panoramic view
of Ottobeuren, bedded in a height of 660 m and dominated by
the unique focal point of the baroque-basilica and Benedictine
abbey. The shaping of this landscape began millions of years
ago under the strong influence of glacier. In several centuries,
flatlands were reclaimed for agriculture, highlands retained as
forest and increasingly husbanded. Ottobeuren emerged at the
spot where the valley offered the largest habitat in terms of
area.

The former Free Imperial Town Kaufbeuren is still dominated
today by its city image of the middle age. The lofty middle-class
houses offer an atmospheric platform for the numerous events

the oldest historical children’s festival of Bavaria. Visitors can
get to know the history of the city in the course of
guided tours, enjoy the downward view of the city from the
walkable town walls or moreover, experience the view over the
Crescentia of Kaufbeuren, the mystic-lady of the 18th century

The convent of Weltenburg lies at the gateway of the
romanticist Danube breakthrough. It was founded by the IrishScottish-Colombian itinerant monks Eustasius and Agilus von
Luxeuil (Burgund) around the year 600 and is thereby the
oldest convent establishment of Bavaria. The abbey church
built and equipped by the Asam brothers in the years 1716-1739
under the then abbot Maurus Bächl (1713-1743) is one of the
best performances of the European baroque. In the year 1803,
Weltenburg became a victim of secularity and was dissolved. It
was however re-established already in 1842 by King Ludwig I. of
Bavaria as a matter of priority and was inhabited by monks
from Metten. Weltenburg has been an abbey again since the
year 1913.

The two rooms opposite to the "Große Hofstube"
(Great Court Chamber) were the study and the
living room of Martin Luther (1483-1546) during his

Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Media of the
Reformation – Clash of Religions
The Ansbach Chancellor George Vogler passed a
huge collection of Reformation pamphlets to the
city of Rothenburg after his death in 1550. This fund
shows dramatically the bitterly fought religious and
cultural battle that raged during the Reformation.
The Imperial City Museum will resurge these
conflicts in an exhibition, which are reflected very
strongly in the early print media of modern history.

The Age of Reformation has been a phase of change

most prominent Franconian artists at the dawn of
Renaissance was Tilman Riemenschneider, a lime

world famous carved altars for Rothenburg such as
the outstanding Altar of the Holy Blood. The

5 Culinary Bavaria
5.1 BEER AND BREWERY VISITS
Bavaria’s reputation as the home of beer goes back centuries when brewing first began in the state’s
monasteries. Thanks to the state’s purity law that was introduced in 1516 Bavarian beer is brewed without
the addition of preserving agents, froth stabilisers, flavour enhancers or any other additives. Bavarian beer
is guaranteed to contain only the four classic ingredients - water, malt, hops and yeast. These selected
ingredients usually are sourced locally as Bavaria is one of the leading producers of brewer’s barley. In
addition to this, the region around the Hallertau, between Ingolstadt, Regensburg and Landshut, is the
largest contiguous hop growing area in the world.

Oktoberfest in Munich
It all started with a horse race which the national guard staged
for the people on 17 th August 1810 to mark the wedding of the
Ludwig Crown Prince of Bavaria (later King Ludwig I) to
Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The race was
such a success that it was staged again the following year.
From 1870 onwards the number of stalls began to increase
and in 1896 the very first beer tents were erected which sold
only beer brewed in Munich - a tradition which has remained
to the present day.

5.3 Wine and wine tastings
The heart of Bavaria’s wine growing is in Franconia
Franconia’s renowned “Bocksbeutel” - a short-necked, round wine bottle - and prized top-quality wines
enjoy worldwide fame. Connoisseurs love the distinctive flavor of Franconia’s dry, fruity wines. Some
6,000 hectares of picturesque vineyards provide some of the best white wines ever and the region’s red
wines are sought-after specialties. The inimitable taste of the wine is a true experience as are the cozy
wine bars, wine tasting venues and convivial wine festivals.
There is plenty of evidence that vines have been grown in the area as far back as the Roman era. The main
growing areas for Franconia’s world-famous red and white wines stretch mainly from Aschaffenburg to
Schweinfurt along the south facing slopes of the valleys of the river Main and its tributaries. 7,000
Franconian vintners are currently producing some 500,000 hectoliters of wine per year.
Vinotheques
Franconian Vinotheques are a perfect place to find an impressive selection of exquisite wines in a pleasant
atmosphere. You can count on the staff being knowledgeable and able to guide you in your selection. You
will be able to learn more about Franconia, its wines, and its wine-growers. And of course you can sample
everything!

6.1 Five-star hotels
In 1996, the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) established an official hotel classification
system in Germany. In the meantime, more than 8,000 establishments have asked for an assessment on a
voluntary basis according to the uniform nation-wide criteria of the “German Hotel Classification”. On the
basis of this classification system, guests are given expressive and reliable information about quality
standards of hotels within a star symbol scheme rating from one to five.

The myth of Maybach
In 1909, Wilhelm Maybach built top-class motor cars of an utmost luxury category, which were
manufactured on demand until the beginning of World War II. Between 1920 and 1941 about 1,800
Maybach limousines were built, although only 160 of them have survived over the last decades.
The Museum for Historical Maybach Vehicles in Neumarkt houses 16 of these vehicles and is
therefore the largest collection of Maybach limousines worldwide. Additional exhibits like
engines, gears, axes as well as historical documents, models and short movies complete the unique

Traditional costumes „Trachten“
Traditional costumes play a huge role in Bavarian life, more so than in any other state of Germany. The
saying goes that: „Clothed in a dirndl (traditional dress) or lederhosen (leather breeches) you are always
dressed to perfection.” Worn by locals to traditional Bavarian festivities or on church high days, Bavarian
traditional costumes are also popular at weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. By using flashy colors and
exceptional fabrics some innovative designers put a new spin on the traditional costumes - thereby
reinterpreting an old tradition.

7 Nature and Outdoors
7.1 National parks and nature parks
National parks
Berchtesgaden National Park
The Berchtesgaden National Park is one of the
oldest protected areas in the Alps. It is part of
the alpine territory near the Bavarian town of
Berchtesgaden in the southeast of Germany. The
park was established in 1978 by a decree from
the Bavarian government. It is a lush expanse of
218 square kilometers, with altitudes ranging
from 540 m at Lake Königssee to the towering
Watzmann Mountain (2670 m). Its amazing
natural environment shows little human
intervention. You will get an impression of this
ecological paradise either by taking part in a
guided tour or by going on your own. The
landscape is mainly characterized by large areas
of rocks and detritus, alpine meadows and
forested areas covered with dwarf pines and
alders. Your tour should definitely include a walk
to the renowned Lake Königssee which lies like
a fjord between the Watzmann, the Steinerne
Meer and the Hagen Mountains. The excellent
drinking water quality of Lake Königssee shows
to what extent the national park’s territory has
remained untouched. The fauna reflects the biodiversity of the Berchtesgadener landscape.
With a little bit of luck you will see wild Alpine
species such as the mountain goat, marmot,
eagle, blue hare, the Alpine salamander and the
rare golden eagle. The flora is equally beautiful
and diverse, and includes, for example, the
horminum, the Hausmann’s rock jasmine and
the dwarf alpine rose. The National park
administration offers a wide range of different
tours. The “Jennerbahn” is very popular among
visitors. This funicular will bring you up to the
boundaries of the national park at 1,800 m.
Bavarian Forest National Park
The Bavarian Forest National Park, Germany’s
first national park, was founded in 1970. In 1997,
its total surface area was extended to now 243
square kilometers. There, nature can develop
freely according to its very own eternal laws on a
surface area which, in its size, is unique in
Europe. You will be enchanted by an unspoilt
low mountain range landscape of which up to
95% is covered by forest. Besides extensive
woodland areas, the national park offers
mountain peaks with fascinating vistas of nearly
endless forests which cover the mountain range
representing the Bavarian-Bohemian border,
mysterious bogs, crystal clear mountain streams
and Lake Rachelsee, the park’s only glacial lake.
The fauna is the result of a rather harsh, slightly
continental climate with high snowfall in winter,
increased by large differences in altitude
between 600 to 1,453 meters. Besides the eagleowl, the Ural owl and the raven, which have been
reintroduced to this area, the otter, the
capercaillie, the hazel grouse, the Eurasian
Pygmy Owl and the Three-toed Woodpecker
belong to the indigenous fauna. A network
comprising more than 300 kilometers of wellsignposted hiking routes, nearly 200 kilometers
of bicycle routes and about 80 kilometers of
cross-country ski slopes give visitors the
opportunity to enjoy the beauties of the national
park’s characteristic nature. A very popular
highlight in the Bavarian Forest is the tree top
walk, which is the longest one of the world:
visitors walk along a 1,300 m long wooden path
that winds up, around a tree, to an impressive
44 m tower from which fantastic views of the
surrounding forests can be seen.
