We had a loving and happy life but that is not to say that we did not have our times. I will tell you about the time I put my foot down. During the early years, game wardens were allowed to process the venison that had been hit by cars and there was a lot of that especially in the McGrath Game Refuge. They could sell the meat at local grocery stores and the monies received were sent to the State. At one time, Marion sold enough venison in stores to pay his wages. Well, Marion would butcher the meat and sell the good stuff and leave me to cook the mangled and bloodshot meat. One day, I said, “Marion, no more!” If you want venison then we will use only good meat and that was the end of “road kill” and he listened to that! We had very little venison after that! “At the game farm in Mad- elia, Marion became superintendent and I became responsible for the office as well as washing, cooking and taking care of the kids. Did I tell you that we had eleven children! Well, there was a phone in the office but only a bell in the house, so when the bell rang I would have to run outside to answer the phone. Usually there were orders for pheasants. We had many visitors and I would have to show them around the place. Sometimes there were high officials from countries like Finland, England and Scotland. I always kept smoked sausage, home made bread, cakes and rolls on hand. Many of these big shots said my food was the best food they ever ate. “In 1936 we had a bad winter. The drifts covered the electric wires. We ran out of fuel oil for heat and the men had to use a homemade snowplow, which was pulled by horses. The men would get in front of the horses and shovel the snow so that the horses could get through. The driveway was a half mile long and it had to be plowed so the truck could get in and also back out. “The kitchen stove in Madelia burned gasoline. Can you believe that? One time when I was filling the stove.,I set the gallon of gas on the floor and was taking the top off the tank when little Marion took the cap off the gasoline can and took a big drink. He could not get his breath and I did not know what to do. I put him on his stomach, opened his mouth and put my finger down his throat. Out came the gas, dinner and all. The Doctor said that I had saved his life. One day I was preparing a roast, I opened the oven door lit a match and there was a big boom; the whole kitchen was on fire. My son Ralph was right outside and he yelled, “fire”. The men got the fire out but the house was a mess and my hands were burnt, as was my beautiful hair. I cried as Marion took care of my hands and my hair was cut off. I had to wear a wig. That is when we got an electric stove. 3 Mom Cooper at the campsite. Notice the diapers on the line. “In Forest Lake we raised a lot of watermelons. The biggest weighed 48 lbs. Even with company we had a time eating that one! “My, Marion was made supervisor of the McGrath Refuge in Isle country and in the fall he would have 14 game wardens working with him. Deer shining was the big thing. People would shine lights at the deer at night and then shoot them. Many of them got arrested. “We lived on a farm and had 300 chickens. I sold 30 dozen cases of eggs every day. The eggs had to be cleaned and graded and put into cartons. There were 13 deer in our yard every night. One buck did not want to let me out in the yard. He would snort and stamp his feet. “Marion’s office was our house and I had a walkietalkie. The car was fixed so that they could receive my calls, so when somebody called about shiners, I would take the walkie-talkie and hang it around my neck and go outside the house and say 1-0 calling 2-0. “The game warden job was part of my life. I tagged whitefish nets, entertained any game warden that stopped by (they were always hungry) and of course there was always that phone. I waited long hours while Marion was in the field, never knowing what might happen to him out there. For 40 years we were game wardens together.” Pioneer Camp brings Aitkin County pioneer life to students BY PHILIP NEESE Aitkin County Historical Society’s second annual Pioneer Camp was a resounding success with 19 of its 20 spaces filled. Focus on the Family www.family.org (800) A-FAMILY (232-6459) Financial success connected to marriage? BY JOSH MONTEZ In the most recent list of the Forbes 400, the wealthiest Americans, all of them are billionaires. And there’s another similarity; most are married. Ignore those bumper stickers that read, “Driver carries no cash; he’s married,” because the fact is studies show being married has financial benefits. Jenny Tyree with Focus on the Family says hers and other family groups have been saying that for years. “Family experts have long recognized the financial benefits of mar- riage, calling it a wealth creating institution because both the married and their children reap from both the tangible and the intangible benefits of marriage.” She says it’s simple: marriages keep families out of poverty. “One family expert has said that avoiding poverty requires three things and marriage is essential to two of those: finishing high school, marrying before having children and marrying after the age of 20.” Mike McManus with Marriage Savers thinks one reason is a married man has a reason to work and succeed. “A man who has a given education and is married will earn 10-40 percent more than someone with the same education and is single. And I think the reason is that he works harder to support his family. He’s got an incentive. He’s got a child at home or a wife who’s pregnant. The Forbes 400 has a 30 percent divorce rate as opposed to the widely publicized 50 percent divorce rate of the general public. NewsHopperTM 7 October 13, 2007 Fine-free check-in at local libraries Now’s the time to dust off those shelves, clear out that bookcase and return those treasured overdue library materials to any ECRL branch. For the first time in its existence, ECRL has declared from the present through October 31, a finefree check-in period. Return any of your overdue items during this amnesty period and we’ll forgive your fines – no questions asked. “We’d much rather spend the money in our budget on new titles, and not ON replacing lost items. Plus, sometimes the return of a long overdue item is like finding a treasure that’s been lost,” says Vickie Sorn, Community Services Coordinator. We are also offering this fine-free check-in period as a token of good faith to all our users for all the inconveniences caused by our computer problems the past six weeks. Patrons, however, will still be charged for any damaged items and for any lost items not returned. Plus, remember that materials returned on time after the finefree check-in period are never charged overdue fines. Progress on our new automation system, Unicorn, is progressing quickly. Patrons may now check items in and out, renew items and register for new library cards. Within the next few weeks patrons should be able to resume placing holds on items, plus access the library catalog in the library and from home. Be assured that each of us at ECRL is working diligently to restore all the services our patrons have come to expect from their local ECRL branch. “Sprague Lake at Estes Park Colorado”, acrylic on canvas by Jan Vriesen, 2007 annual wildlife juried exhibit winner. This picturesque resort is located on the east side of Cedar Lake, approximately 3 miles west of Aitkin. In 1946, this resort was just a wooded lot with one building. Elfrieda and Charles Fredericks bought the property from Jack Healy. It was their dream to start a resort on beautiful Cedar Lake. The rooms had to be cleaned; repairs made, bills paid and guests required a lot of attention. We were happy that first year. We were used to hard work and we were living on a beautiful lake and away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We had the best of all worlds and then in 1947 my husband died. I was devastated. I hung in there and my sister Edna helped when she could. Most of the guests were wonderful. If I got a bad one I made sure that they never came back. Many of our guests came back year after year.” Darlene Johnson, Elfrieda’s niece tells us why, “My mom Edna was Elfrieda’s sister and we got to come to the resort quite often. In the summer, Elfrieda would pick blueberries and make the greatest pie and share it with us and all the guests. It is no wonder these people came back year after year!” Elfrieda supplemented her income by baking. Gloria most wonderful baked goods delicious! You just picked out that she had for sale. Replacing old heating equipment with more efficient models will save energy and money. However, your home’s heating equipment is part of a larger system. In order to gain the benefits of a better heating system, it is important to properly maintain existing equipment, use a programmable thermostat, seal air leaks, test air ducts for leaks, and maintain adequate ventilation. Benefits: • Energy Savings If you have an older, inefficient furnace, upgrading to high efficiency heating equipment can cut your costs by more than onethird. Using a programmable thermostat adds even more savings. Your energy costs will decrease 1 percent for every 1 degree you lower the thermostat. The additional savings from installing smaller heating equipment is significant. Properly sized equipment runs more efficiently, lasting longer and requiring less maintenance. Smaller equipment requires that the home “envelope” be tight, which means adequate insulation, sealing air leaks, and having efficient windows. It is also critical to evaluate and address any leaks or defects in the duct work. The savings comes from multiple sources – efficiency pays! • Comfortable Living Your heating system is the engine that keeps your home comfortable. By addressing air and duct leakage, your heating system will actually heat the rooms you live in by fixing the problems that allow expensive heated air from escaping to the outdoors or into wall cavities where it doesn’t get the job done. You will enjoy living in a more comfortable home that costs less to heat every month. SAVINGS WITH A TWIST. If your energy bills average $1,500/yr. and you saved 40 percent or $600/yr., your home value would increase by more than $12,400. As energy costs rise, this return on investment grows. • Conservation Individual actions at home can add up to a lot of pollution prevention. If just one in ten households bought ENERGY STAR heating and cooling products, the change would keep over 17 billion pounds of pollution out of the air. minimum standard is an 80 percent AFUE, investing a bit more in a 90 percent plus AFUE furnace is provides more energy savings. These high efficiency units are closed combustion, which eliminates any potential for carbon monoxide poisoning from the furnace. They also provide more comfort and variable speed units save electricity. With the increasing and volatile costs of natural gas, this is an investment in your home. • Air-Source Heat Pumps. Electric air-source heat pumps use the difference between outdoor air temperatures and indoor air temperatures to cool and heat your home. There are some repairs you may be able to do yourself, in places where the ducts are accessible (attic, basement, crawlspace). Otherwise, you can hire a contractor that specializes in duct repair. Ventilation Making sure you have the right ventilation levels is a health and safety issue. Using mechanical ventilation allows you to control the ventilation in your home, saving money and improving indoor air quality. Quality heating contractors will evaluate your home with an on-site inspection. Do not accept over-the-phone estimates because there is no way for a contractor to properly size and design your new heating system without an on-site inspection. Lower the thermostat to 55 degrees at night or when you are not home. Reasonably priced setback thermostats are available to achieve these temperature changes automatically. • Clean your filter or replace a disposable filter once a month during winter months. • When the fireplace is not in use, close the damper. • Electric fireplaces provide a clean safe alternative to wood burning or gas fireplaces. • During the winter, heat rises toward the ceiling and cool air settles on the floor. During winter months make sure your ceiling fan is rotated so that it produces an upward airflow. Depending on the room size and shape, there could be a 15 degree Fahrenheit difference between the floor and the ceiling. • Check out Warm Floor Heating Systems. • Repair leaking faucets promptly; a leaking faucet wastes gallons of water in a short period of time. • Insulate your electric hot- Instant Rebates $2 per bulb are available to MilleLacs Energy Cooperative members who purchase Energy Star® compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL) (Limit of 12 rebates per member) Offer valid through November 30, 2007, or while supplies last. Units that meet ENERGY STAR have an AFUE of 85 percent or greater, and use 10 percent less energy than standard boilers. • Hot-water heating systems. Sometimes called hydronic systems, these are more common today than steam systems. Some hotwater systems circulate water through plastic tubing in the floor, a system called radiant floor heating. • Ground-source heat pumps or Geothermal units. These run water down into the Earth, where temperatures are more consistent year-round. This is a more expensive option upfront, but their simplicity and efficiency makes them as much as 45 percent more efficient than conventional heating systems. water storage tank and pipes, but be careful not to cover the thermostat. • Install non-aerating lowflow faucets and showerheads. • Heat your water with an electric water heater and save money every month by participating in a Offpeak storage water heating program. • Lower the thermostat on your water heater; water heaters sometimes come from the factory with high temperature settings. A setting of 115 degree Fahrenheit provides comfortable hot water for most uses. • Drain a quart of water from your water tank every three months to remove sediment that impedes heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of your heater. The type of water tank you have determines the steps to take. Follow the manufacturer’s advice. • Take more showers than baths. Bathing uses the most hot water in the average household. You use 15 - 25 gallons of hot water for a bath, but less than 10 gallons during a five minute shower. Information from www. mlecmn.net. NOW OFFERING INSULATION BY 218-927-7077 401 Minn. Closed Sundays & Mondays The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids, Volume 2, gives step-by-step instructions on how to dry and make an attractive birdhouse from a gourd (with adult supervision, of course!). If you really want to treat your feathered friends, you can also hang out a pinecone rolled in honey or peanut butter. Make a gourd birdhouse You will need: • Round or curlicue-shape gourd, completely dried • 12-inch ruler • Drill or sharp knife • Round stick or wooden dowel for perch, about 1/4-inch in diameter • Weatherproof cord or string Choose a gourd that is large enough for a bird to live in but not too large to hang from a tree branch. To dry it, keep it in a warm area with good air circulation (this may take several months). When the seeds rattle and tapping it produces a hollow sound, it’s ready. Using a drill or sharp knife, make the entrance hole at least one-third of the way up from the bottom of the large part of the gourd. Half an inch below the entrance hole, drill or cut a small hole the diameter of your stick or dowel perch and put the perch into the hole. Make two or three small holes in the bottom of the gourd for drainage and two holes in the top for the cord hanger. Run a piece of cord though the holes in the top. Leave enough length to hang and tie it. In the spring, hang the birdhouse on a branch where you can see it. To attract many birds, make a few birdhouses and place them on neighboring trees. Welle told the Board that traffic crashes are the leading cause of death nationwide with 42,000 fatalities. In 2006, Minnesota had 494 fatal crashes, a decrease for three consecutive years. However, one third of those fatalities were people under age 25. Other national statistics quoted were: Two out of three fatalities happen on rural roads outside metro areas, 300 children under age five that were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 1999 were unrestrained in those vehicles; alcohol-related crashes account for 38 percent of traffic fatalities at a cost to our society of $150 billion annually. “Safer driving behaviors, using seat belts, not drinking and driving, and obeying traffic laws dramatically reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths,” said Welle, along with improvements to roadway safety and making safer vehicles. Commissioner Wedel and County Administrator Patrick Wussow will start attending emergency management sessions. · The Board accepted a $10,000 grant from Blandin Foundation for a feasibility study to be done by Northspan Group for a plasma energy park. · Environmental Services Director Terry Neff and the Board discussed having internal staff review the Shoreland Ordinance to clarify language and eliminate confusion. Neff will bring any new language back to the Board for review. “The Shoreland Alteration area is where we have the most violations,” said Neff. “Something needs to be done.” Neff said his staff is spending so much time after the fact and sometimes damage is so severe, it cannot be totally reclaimed for decades. Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Ironton City Hall. Council Members present: Gerry Altonen, Bill Thoms, Bill Wynn, Dean French and Mayor David Hicks. Also present was Rosemary Caddy, Clerk Treasurer and Cheryl Buchite, Assistant City Clerk. Mayor Hicks called the meeting to order. Councilmember Wynn corrected the Sept. 19 minutes to reflect he wasn’t present for the meeting and clarified that the $10,000 donation to the Ironton Fire Department would be relegated to the City’s budget. Wynn also confirmed another meeting would take place concerning resident Stromberg’s fence issue. A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes with corrections. Motion was carried. A motion was made to approve the bills. The motion was seconded and carried. A public hearing was held to consider an application for a conditional use permit by Terry and Don Dean for a metal recycling facility at 312 4RH Street located in A B-1 General Business District. The owner of the garage neighboring the recycling center asked whether the recycling would be inside the facility. After a brief discussion, a motion was made, seconded and carried to approve the conditional use permit for the recycling center. A brief discussion ensued concerning a letter from the DNR to Rosemary Caddy, City Clerk regarding purchase by the DNR of the Jeff Olsen property located within the City of Ironton. A motion was made, second and carried to forward the letter to City At- torney Langel for review before the next Council meeting where it will be brought before the Council again. Caddy announced a grant application submitted to the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation for funding from the General Grants Fund has been denied due to lack of funding. Resident, Dave Fournier, appeared before the Council to discuss alleged complaints about his property from anonymous residents. Fournier feels he is not in violation of any city ordinances. Fournier stated the Police Department has made several visits to his residence and he feels harassed. It was noted that there are four licensed drivers living at the residence, and Police Chief Coughlin has run license checks on the vehicles. Fournier also stated he has made phone calls to Coughlin and she has not returned his calls. Mayor Hicks stated there is no ordinance on the limit of cars at a residence. Unless a formal, signed complaint is received by the Council, they assured Fournier they would not take action in this regard. Mayor Hicks inquired about the $100 water shut-off fee assessed by the City when it’s necessary to shut off water at a residence. Hicks cited the fees assessed by neighboring communities: Deerwood, none, Crosby, $15 and Baxter, $10. After a brief discussion Hicks stated he would like to see Ironton’s fees adjusted accordingly, i.e., a minimal fee of $25 then an hourly rate if the shut off becomes complicated or involved. Caddy suggested this issue be brought before the city employees who turn the water off and then the 15 feedback be presented to the Council at the next meeting. A letter from the City Attorney concerning Heglund’s property Hidden JewelL was discussed. Langel laid out the zoning ordinances as they relate to R-1 or R-1M districts versus residential zoning. Hicks suggested Langel’s letter be reviewed before the next Council Meeting and the issue placed on the agenda for further discussion. There was brief discussion concerning the Sanitary Sewer meetings Councilmember Altonen currently attends. She will continue to attend these meetings and report issues to the Council in the future. A representative of the Ironton Fire Department presented a check from the Relief Association in the amount of $10,902.65, stating he would like to see $1,902.65 relegated to the City of Ironton with the remaining $9,000 issued to the Women’s Auxiliary. A decision will be made concerning the distribution of the check by the next Council Meeting. Mayor Hicks inquired about the dumping of material at the tennis courts, pipes, rocks, and other trash. Hicks would like it removed and the area cleaned up. Councilmember Wynn inquired about ongoing discussions with the Union concerning the City Employees’ contract. Caddy will speak to the Union representative this week to ensure this is proceeding. The meeting was then adjourned. The City of Ironton City Council meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The meetings are open to the public. longer wait. Attending the meeting was a deputy sheriff to keep order. His presence was due to the previous meeting’s concern of a threat. Procedures of city council members are “in question” under the “Open Meeting Law”. The Minnesota “Open Meeting Law” generally requires that all meetings of public bodies be open to the public. Minnesota courts have generally ruled that a meeting is a gathering (exchange of any information) of a quorum of public officials to discuss, decide or receive information on matters over which they have authority. McGrath City Council confusion continues SUBMITTED BY DARLENE MACIEJ The McGrath City Council meeting on Sept. 13 was called and posted to be held by Lynette Thomsen and Rose Krebs. At the meeting Mayor Larry Bullen and city council member Richard Mottl were not present. The meeting was called to order by Nancy Stemig. The motion to address getting a different city lawyer was made, second, and voted on. The motion passed and then discussion began. A meeting date and agenda is to be posted three days prior to meeting. The resignation from Thomas Murtha was dated Sept. 12. The day before the meeting. Discussion of new attorney brought up Troy Gilchrist. He was one of the three applicants in the early part of the year. Lynette did have contact with him. Motion to hire Troy was made, second and carried by the three council members. Lynette will e-mail him to let him know he was hired. Due to the hiring of the new attorney the Sept. 17 meeting with engineers was cancelled. The meeting with the engineers was in regard to correcting the sewer system problems and a new mound. The residents have been waiting so long to have the problems corrected. The Internal Revenue Service is reminding about 137,700 Minnesotans, who in April requested more time to complete a tax return, to avoid late filing penalties by filing a 2006 tax return by Mon., Oct. 15, and to pay special attention to requesting the one-time phone tax refund on that return. The IRS estimates that 837,000 Minnesota filers missed out on at least $25 million because they neglected to request the phone tax refund at all when they filed this year. Those taxpayers now filing extended returns still have a chance to get the one-time refund without doing extra paperwork. The agency is also alerting Minnesotans that Oct. 15 is their last chance to file for 2006 the easy way – electronically. Electronic filing is not available after that date until the next tax filing season. People who had little or no 2006 income and had a phone during the refund period (March 2003 through July 2006) may be able to request the phone tax refund using a short, easy form. “If your 2006 income was low, it’s likely that you can request the phone tax refund using the quick and easy Form 1040EZ-T,” said IRS spokesperson Carrie Resch. The simple 1040 EZ-T is exclusively for taxpayers whose 2006 income was below the filing requirement – often students and senior citizens – but who still qualify for the telephone tax refund. It takes just minutes to complete. Simply go to IRS.gov, click on the e-file logo, and use Free File to find a software provider offering the 1040 EZ-T at no cost. Taxpayers who already filed but missed this refund may have a cell phone, but no landline, and mistakenly thought they did not qualify for the telephone tax refund. Many do. Qualifying taxpayers in this situation should use a paper Form 1040X to amend their return and request the telephone tax refund. The telephone tax refund covers the threepercent tax paid on long-distance and bundled service from March 2003 through July 2006. It can add $30 to $60 — or even more — onto a taxpayer’s refund. So far this year, nearly 2 million Minnesota filers requested telephone tax refunds. For taxpayers who requested an extension of time to file a 2006 return, it’s due Oct. 15, 2007. Be sure to check on the telephone tax refund. Nearly every household qualifies. Taxpayers in Presidential Disaster Areas struck by severe storms and flooding on Aug. 18 in southeastern Minnesota and southern Wisconsin and in Grand Forks County, North Dakota on Aug. 26 have until Nov. 15 to file. Returns must be postmarked or electronically filed by midnight on the respective deadline day to avoid penalties. The disaster areas include Dodge, Fillmore, Houston, Olmstead, Steele, Wabasha and Winona counties in Minnesota; Columbia, Crawford, Dane, Grant, Green, Iowa, Jefferson, Kenosha, La Crosse, Racine, Richland, Rock, Sauk and Vernon counties in Wisconsin; and Grand Forks County in North Dakota. IRS computer systems identify taxpayers in Presidential Disaster Areas and apply automatic filing and payment relief. Taxpayers in those counties do not need to self-identify by writing on their returns or using the disaster designation in their tax software. Affected taxpayers who reside or have a business located outside these counties need to call the IRS disaster hotline at 1866-562-5227 to self-identify for disaster relief. Taxpayers with an adjusted gross income of $52,000 or less generally qualify for free electronic filing this year through Free File at IRS.gov. Electronic filing is available through the Oct. 15 extension deadline. For more information and free electronic filing options, visit IRS.gov. Download Form 1040 EZ-T or the Form 1040X at IRS.gov, or order it from 1-800-TAXFORM. Still have questions? Call 1-800-TAX-1040. cancer screening.
