New Commercial - Retail Developments in Glendale - North Shore
Glendale’s Southern Entrance Has A New
Look & They Are Not Through Yet
The Southern Entrance to Glendale just received a new
look with the completion of the first phase of the Beerline
Complex that was first revealed in the spring ‘07 issue of
the Glendale North Shore “News & Views.” Anchor tenant, Wisconsin Department of Corrections, took possession
of the 42,000 square feet of office space that was the former
site of Becker Foods on Port Washington Road at Olive
Street on November 1, 2007.
The project was the successful culmination of a partnership between Earthbound Development, Endeavor
Development, Beacon Properties and the design build
general contractor MSI General. MSI General’s architectural staff creatively took a 100-year-old group of warehouse buildings and converted the space to modern offices
while retaining the industrial character of the buildings.
They envisioned the diamond in the rough that was hidden
from view because of multiple additions that occurred over
many years. They carefully peeled away 11 of the additions and exposed the core group of six buildings that they
transformed into what you see today. There are still signs of
the industrial heritage that remains throughout, with objects
like the original metal fire door, the steel vertical supports
that were retained and artistically reused and all exterior
and interior brick and concrete was meticulously sand-
crushed and used in lieu of importing limestone and over
300 tons of crushed concrete were reused.
All contaminated soils were managed on site and new
soil was brought in as well. 35,000 man-hours were engaged to convert the buildings into 79,343 of square
footage for lease.
30 miles of data and communication cables were installed for the new State of Wisconsin tenant that took
42,000 square feet of leased space.
All this was accomplished in just 397 days - the total
duration of time that Beerline Crossing LLC and MSI General took to complete, including the RFP, Design, municipal
approval, funding, permits, construction and furniture installation for the tenant.
What is next for Beerline? This unique urban renewal
project still contains the opportunity for the additional lease
of 9,000 square feet of open second floor office space surrounded by windows and complete with skylights as well
as an additional 28,000 square feet of office/warehouse
space. Ultimately, this site will also contain up to 20,000
square feet of new build to suit space at the outside corner
of Port Washington Road and Olive Street. The Beerline
partners are looking for a tenant that would like to have a
creative structure built to compliment and complete the redevelopment of this former brownfield site. This project
would not have been possible without the cooperation
and guidance of the City of Glendale, elected officials and
Glendale Chamber of Commerce. It is conveniently located within minutes of I43 north and south entrances. The
owners invite you to drive by; you will love what they did
for the community, and even better, what they are doing to
help Glendale’s tax base.

Some fascinating facts about this project:

The first floor, in B&E General Contractors beautiful twostory office – show house, located at the intersection of
Green Bay Rd. and Florist Ave., Glendale, was recently
transformed into the Ultimate, fully functioning, Dream
Kitchen. In the tradition and long-held philosophies of
owners Mark and Marlynn Brick and their award winning
design and construction team – “practice what you advise
others to do and treat every job as if you were building it for
your own home. This is not a catchy marketing phrase, it is
the way we consider and treat each customer,” says Mark
and Marlynn Brick.
When you see their Ultimate Dream Kitchen that they
built in their large home-style offices, you will immediately

realize that they practice what they preach. The kitchen
contains regal Crystal Cabinet Works brand cabinets, an
array of artistic fixtures from popular vendors such as
Kohler, Brizo and Barclay and creative lighting options.
Counter top displays are comprised of Granite, Cambria
and Corian solid materials with unique edge finishes. The
kitchen displays gourmet-grade appliances from Wolf, SubZero and Fisher-Paykel.
There were two main objectives for creating the B&E
Ultimate Dream Kitchen. First, to provide their current
and future customers with a one-stop selection showroom
center. “With discretionary free time at a premium, we
wanted to alleviate the hassle of homeowners traveling to
multiple vendor showrooms to make product selections,”
said Brick. “In the comfort of the B&E office, conveniently
located in the North Shore, homeowners may select their
amenities and accessories with a personalized hands-on
guidance from their project designer and expeditor.”
Second, Mark Brick, a former president, locally and nationally of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), has a deep passion of giving back to the
community that has done so much for him. Brick is opening
his Ultimate Dream Kitchen to area chefs, organizations
and civic groups to use their facilities for meetings, bonding
sessions and demonstrations.
GCC member, Mark Brick and B&E have been operating
in the North Shore since 1985. In 2001, B&E relocated to
their new location after doing a massive upscale reconstruction of a former garden nursery property. Whether you are
interested in an upscale entire home renovation, or a modest esthetic facelift, give them a call at 414-351-5558 online: www.begeneralcontractors.com. Brick promises you
will receive unwavering attention and professionalism.

Three business partners, originally from Glendale, recently purchased the Quiznos Subs located in the strip mall at the intersection
of Port Washington and Bender Rd. Aaron Moeser, Matt Ryan and

GCC Members Volunteered to Help Buckthorn
Removal at Kletzsch Park
Some of the GCC Community Service members, chaired by
Charles Richner, recently teamed with Friends of Kletzsch Park
to help remove the invasive buckthorn. The buckthorn, native to
Europe (Rhamnus cathartica) is a problematic exotic invasive that
spreads readily through woods and savannas. It is a major threat to
Wisconsin’s ecosystems and very troublesome in County parks
and even in homeowners’ back yards.
“The Saturday, October 27th event at Kletzsch Park drew a volunteer crowd armed with
bow saws, clippers and herbicides and resulted in the most successful “weed-out” in the
park’s history,” said Friends director and GCC member, Jon Wright. An estimated one
thousand trees and saplings were piled in long rows ready for the wood chipper. “Our intent is to create public awareness of the invasive buckthorn and to preserve and to protect
the park,” said participant, Brian Monroe, GCC vice president and Community Service
Committee member. Our appreciation to Wright, Rychner and Monroe for their worthwhile
efforts.
Senior Moments - A Submitted Club Update.
Larry Ousterling has been appointed the new President of the
Glendale Senior Citizen Club, G.S.C.C., replacing outgoing president, Joe Laur, who will continue as their V.P.
The Club’s new elevator, for the exclusive use of the seniors and
disabled students at Glen Hills Middle School, is now operating
and conveniently located next to the Senior Center room. This elevator will now allow those who have trouble climbing
stairs to be able to attend events.
We congratulate Joe Laur in his unrelenting effort, over four years, to secure the necessary funds to build it. Donations from members, friends, and businesses brought in enough
to install the elevator, which was finished October 1.
Club meetings are held in the Senior Center, which is located in the lower level of Mill
Road Middle School, 2600 W. Mill Road and are open to anyone over the age of 55. It is
not necessary to be a resident of Glendale to join this group. Dues are $10 annually.
General meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month, at 1:30 p.m. They
include interesting and informative programs as well as time for socializing. Snacks and
beverages are served. Regular activities include Bridge, Sheepshead, Chorus, Crafts, Billiards, Bowling and more. On the 4th Wednesday of every month, a free movie is shown
in the Center on the wide screen television at 1 p.m. Parties, day trips, and picnics are held
throughout the year. For further information call 540-2100, or email

Green Developer Making a Positive Impact in Glendale
Sells former Becker Property to Beerline Crossing & GM Real
Estate to Tony Machi – 40 plus Glendale Acres to Go.
Brian Monroe and Nancy Neumann partners in EARTHBOUND
Development, LLC have their sights set on Glendale. They recently formed EARTHBOUND after selling their former Becker
Foods site to the newly formed Beerline Crossing partnership and
their GM Real Estate Enterprise property to Tony Machi Fruits &
Vegetables. Both of these sites were vacant in 2004 and now have
tenants that bring additional increased values and opportunities to
Glendale and the surrounding area.
The EARTHBOUND Development name emerged with Monroe and Neumann’s desire
to focus on urban renewal projects that create environmentally friendly construction practices by recycling old buildings and the environmental remediation of contaminated sites
with new building footprints, green space and parking lots.
These green practices were employed with the Beerline Crossing redevelopment project
at Port Washington Rd and Olive St (see article on page 2).
GCC member, EARTHBOUND is about to tackle the challenging task of reclaiming the
40+ acres of vacant land between Port Washington Rd and Green Bay Ave just north of
Home Depot. They are working with the City of Glendale to maximize the development
potential of the largest area of vacant land in an urban setting.

Specialty Vitamin Health Store – Elite Nutrition - Opens In Glendale
Owner, Kate Peterson has been in the nutrition industry for over
nine years. The things that she did not see happening within her
industry, and that should be happening, motivated her to open a
store that answered those deficiencies. “When I decided to open
Elite Nutrition I set out to create a different type of customer experience, one based on three major premises,” said Peterson. “One
- the expertise of the staff. Two – a wide selection of the best products in the industry. Three – everyday low prices.”
Kate and her staff are very dedicated to providing the scientific based information and
answers customers want. Because they believe in seeking out the “ best of ” products in
any line, they do not carry items with their own brand name – Peterson says that this is
what often compromises stores from continually seeking and offering only the best products as advances are made.
If you are looking for a place where they take the time to provide expert insight, offer
the best products in the industry, at everyday low prices, give Kate Peterson a call or stop
by. GCC member, Elite Nutrition, is located at 6252 N. Port Washington Rd. in the shopping center just north of Bender. Phone - 414-964-6645.

this unique oven so he could offer his customers “We Bake & You Take” in addition to the

North Shore Legislative and Business Updates
State Representative Sheldon Wasserman
As you may know, the legislature finally passed and the Governor
signed the 2007-2008 state budget. Although there were many initiatives in the final version that I supported, I could not vote for the
budget because it included an unconstitutional and fiscally irresponsible raid on the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund
(IPFCF). Physicians, Nurse Anesthetists and hospitals have been required to pay into the IPFCF since its inception in 1975 with the understanding that these funds would be used to pay medical malpractice claims, not to fund
other government objectives. These are not taxes or fees. The state has no legal claim to
these funds.
At the start of every session, all members of the legislature take an oath to uphold the
Wisconsin and U.S. Constitutions. Taking 200 million dollars from the IPFCF is a violation of that oath, an unconstitutional taking of private property. (See Article I, Section 13
of the Wisconsin constitution and the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.) And it
violates state law - 2003 Wisconsin Act 111 codified that the IPFCF is held in trust exclusively for the benefit of injured patients and health care providers and may not be spent
for any other purpose of the state.
Because of this raid, patients will have a harder time finding health providers who are
willing to treat them. The raid will drive medical malpractice costs up dramatically, making it harder to attract and retain health care professionals.
And taxpayers lose as well. If history is any guide, taxpayers could be on the hook for
over half a billion dollars. In 1997, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association, Inc. v. Employee Trust Funds Board, that a similar raid on
pension funds was unconstitutional and ordered the state to return the money with interest
and attorney’s fees. Taking 80 million dollars to help balance the budget ended up costing
the taxpayers over 215 million dollars. Even if the legislature could legally take this
money, it makes no sense to use one-time funds to pay for ongoing programs and leave the
next legislature with a hole of at least 200 million dollars. Taking from the IPFCF to pay
for ongoing programs is fiscally irresponsible.
I was also troubled by the structural deficit built into the budget. Article VIII, Section
5 of the Wisconsin Constitution requires the Legislature pass a balanced budget. I cannot
support using accounting tricks to make the budget appear balanced when in reality it is
close to a billion dollars short. A vote on the budget always involves some sort of compromise. No matter how badly I wanted to see a budget passed, I could not compromise
on the oath I took to uphold the state’s laws and constitution.
Although I voted against the budget, I am pleased that school districts, local governments,
and taxpayers can plan accordingly. I appreciate the input I receive from GCC members
and want to thank the GCC and the Glendale-North Shore News & Views Editor & Publisher, Dale Schmidt for providing me with this opportunity to keep you informed of what’s
happening in the State Capitol. Sheldon Wasserman, State Representative, North Shore 22nd Assembly District

Jerome Tepper, Mayor of Glendale
We have reached that time in the year where it is good to reflect
on the year past, the improvements we can make and what we
should appreciate.
Two items that took much of our attention were the opening of
Bayshore Town Center and the decision to remain involved with
the North Shore Fire Department by the City of Glendale.
November 2, 2006 marked the reopening of the former
Bayshore Shopping Center as the new Bayshore Town Center.
The grand opening took place at the Town Center on a cold and blustery day, even the
weather could not freeze out the enthusiasm that people from all over our State expressed.
All who participated have made this venture successful beyond anyone’s dreams. Glendale thanks the developer for their innovative concept and continued willingness to accommodate our community and our neighbors, and the merchants and consumers for
participating in our success.
In my opinion, the North Shore Fire Department is one of the best of its kind. Over the
past two years there have been ongoing discussions between the seven North Shore communities regarding issues that were of mutual concern. As most know, we had serious
open discussions regarding those issues. This past summer, all seven communities approved an amendment to the North Shore Fire Department’s by-laws concerning each
community’s financial obligations and this agreement will last for five years unless further
modified. We thank those seven communities and their elected leaders and the Fire Fighters Union for developing the concept that was finally adopted.
There were many other positive accomplishments. Among them, Johnson Controls’ expansion of their business division and firm establishment of their international headquarters in Glendale; redevelopment of Mill Road; the Port Road land use and master plan
discussions; the fantastic job done by Joe Laur and the seniors in raising the funds necessary to build a special needs elevator at Glen Hill School, and our Glendale Days - Fourth
of July celebration, which was a wonderful success as in years past.
Members of the community at large accomplished these projects with the unselfish donation of time and effort. I commend the CDA committee members for representing the
City’s interests regarding construction and design of the Bayshore Town Center, and the
Plan Commission for providing oversight and approval for other development projects in
the City. Many citizen volunteers gave their time and energy on committees such as, the
Fourth of July and beautification.
My personal thanks to the Glendale Common Council who spends countless hours doing
their best to address the needs of their constituents, and who, I believe, do an excellent job.
Special thanks to Bill Huegel and Cindy McManus, who retired from the Common Council
this year, they served this community in many capacities, and always put the City first. Bill
was my mentor when I became Mayor, and he as well as Cindy, are missed by all of us.
I would also like to thank the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, GCC, for the fine work
they do for the businesses and the community throughout the year. This year’s GCC sponsorship, promotion and the combining of the city’s Music In The Glen Streetlife concert
with their annual picnic, moving both events to Heidelberg Park, set a new attendance
record.
We wish to acknowledge our paid staff who daily serve our constituents and do a commendable job in a positive spirit. While I believe that what we have accomplished this
past year in the City is good, we can do better. A major way we can improve is if we look
in all directions and recognize that we have more in common with our neighbors than the
things that divide us, and that we continue to build on the foundation of those shared agreements currently in place.
I wish all the employees, volunteers, those living and working in Glendale, and our
sister communities a happy, healthy and prosperous holiday season.
State Senator Alberta Darling
Looking back on 2007, the budget debate has certainly been the
biggest story from the State Capitol. Plenty has already been written
about the recent passage of the state budget, so I’ll only give a very
brief wrap-up of the 1,600-page document. I voted against the final
budget for several reasons.
• First, the budget raised a variety of taxes and fees.
• Second, it is balanced with a lot of borrowed money, which must
eventually be paid back with interest.
• Third, the Governor raided the Injured Patients Compensation Fund of $200 million.
This fund is not meant to plug budget holes. It is meant to compensate patients injured by
medical malpractice.
• Finally, the budget contains too much pork, very specific local projects that benefit the
districts of certain legislators. Some of the more egregious examples include:
o $35,000 for a “wind sled” to help 15 middle and high school students zip to school
across Lake Superior in the winter.
o $10,000 to help the Town of Pensaukee in Oconto County fancy up its town hall
o $25,000 to pay the Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua Musical Troupe to visit public
schools
While this budget wasn’t great, it could have been a lot worse. Previous drafts of the
budget had huge tax increases on gas, real estate transfers and even a $15 billion dollar tax
hike for a poorly thought-out universal health care plan. I heard from a lot of Chamber of
Commerce members who told me how bad these proposed tax increases would be for their
businesses. Thankfully, those tax hike proposals were removed from the final product.
While the budget process has dominated the landscape in Madison, there has been other
news. For instance, the Legislature has set aside funding for 31 new analysts who will
eliminate the state crime lab’s backlog, which built up under the previous Attorney General.
For the rest of 2007 and into 2008, I will continue working on my “Smart Medicine”
health care reform package. Smart Medicine maps out a plan to lower health care and insurance costs, improve quality, increase accessibility and prevent expensive health care
problems before they start.
I will also keep pushing my comprehensive bill that closes loopholes, increases penalties
and clarifies potentially contradictory state law relating to sexual predators and crimes
against children.
Lowering taxes, fighting crime and lowering health care and insurance costs will remain
at the top of my legislative agenda in 2008. I will continue to oppose policies that make
it tougher for Glendale-area businesses to thrive and I will continue to support efforts to
improve our tax and regulatory climate. For more details on legislation related to these
and

Scott Walker,
Milwaukee County Executive
Budget Provides Positive Vision for Future of the North
Shore and Milwaukee County
People in Glendale and all across Milwaukee County want similar
things from local government. They want to be safe. They want
to be able to afford to live here or do business here. And they want
to feel proud of our county and our assets. Our 2008 county budget addresses each of
these issues.
Safety: We gave the Sheriff the resources he needs to protect our parks and buses and
to address violent crime throughout the county. This was built off of the success of enhanced patrols on the lakefront this summer. We also added new Parks Patrols that can go
through areas like Kletzsch Park. In addition, we put more into programs to keep our
young kids out of a cycle of crime, increase supervision of offenders in the community
with new GPS tracking, and improve one of the best paramedic programs in the country.
Public Safety is a priority in my budget.
Affordability: If taxes continued to grow at the same rate as before I got here, we'd be
paying $43.9 million more in taxes this year. Instead, for the 6th budget in a row, there is
a 0% increase in the tax levy from the previous year. Sure, the members of the county
board keep adding more levy, but I use my veto pen to get it back to zero and keep pushing
for them to hold the line on taxes.
This budget was built to protect the retired couple living on Social Security, the new
homeowners with a baby and the entrepreneur just branching out to start a new business.
These people need to be able to afford to live, work, grow and retire in and around Glendale and within Milwaukee County.
Pride: Our budget includes a significant investment in our roads, highways, parkways
and airport. We restore the transit routes that were to be eliminated and keep ParaTransit
service. We push new construction and housing opportunities. We continue our health
care for low-income individuals, increase long-term care for our seniors, expand FamilyCare to people with disabilities and improve care for those suffering from mental illness.
We continue our investments in the zoo, our cultural institutions and the parks. We add
more than $1.1 million in new equipment and $12.9 million in new capital improvements
to the parks – including a new aquatic center in Lincoln Park, which we hope will attract
families from Glendale and surrounding neighborhoods. In addition, our plan actually
INCREASES the number of hours of work in the parks. We replace year-round, full-time
employees with seasonal employees that increase the total work hours in the parks by
nearly 20,000 hours.
Do you pay the kid who mows your lawn to work in December? No. Our plan just
makes common sense as we allow the parks system to hire and use staff at the times when
they need it most. Our plan protects the parks while protecting the taxpayer.
Business owners in Glendale have to make choices every day on how to meet a budget.
Our county budget shows that one can balance the need to control taxes with the need to
provide core services. We will continue to look out for the interests of the residents and
businesses of Milwaukee County – and not just special interests – in our 2008 budget.

Whitefish Bay Village President
As you gather with friends and family over the holidays I hope that
you joined us in Whitefish Bay for the annual Holiday Stroll and Tree
Lighting. Sponsored by the business association, this event is just
one example of the many contributions our merchants make to support our family-centered community. It is the kind of partnership that makes our business
district and our village thrive.
The Whitefish Bay Business and Professional Association is also busy working with the
Community Development Authority and the Village Board to assure a vibrant business
district in Whitefish Bay. Watch for progress as the details of the conceptual plan for
streetscaping on Silver Spring is refined.
A visioning session, jointly sponsored by the CDA and the business association, will
bring prominent speakers to discuss development potential in the business district.
Just as the vibrant shopping district in Whitefish Bay depends on the positive contributions of business, government and residents, our success requires working in tandem with
neighboring communities to envision and deliver a complementary and comprehensive
business community in the North Shore. I look forward to working with you to make that
happen.
In the meantime, if you are looking for a special item, a unique gift and friendly customer
experience, be sure to visit the streets of Whitefish Bay. May your holidays be peaceful
and prosperous.
Michael West, Fox Point Village President
In early October, I was pleased and honored to cut the ribbon officially opening the Fox Point office of Cornerstone Community
Bank. Although Fox Point is primarily a residential community,
the many businesses that have chosen to locate in our community
play an important role and offer our citizens and neighbors numerous opportunities for shopping, dining and services. Cornerstone Community Bank
will be a great addition to our community.
This year brought two significant projects to Fox Point. First, the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District is in the process of completing its stormwater management
project in the Indian Creek channel. This project has been anticipated for several years.
It will not be fully realized until the vegetation gets established and begins to mature, but
the project is essentially complete.
The second major project is the construction of our new police station. The ground
breaking was held in February of this year and the expected completion will be in the
spring of 2008. This project was studied and planned in detail prior to the Village Board’s
authorization to proceed and it recognizes the importance of the Police Department’s contribution to our community’s safety and general welfare.
2007 saw another season for the Fox Point Farmer’s Market. The market has received
broad community support over the years and this is a credit to the organizers and volunteers
that make it happen.
The annual 4th of July parade and picnic was successful yet again. Our thanks go to the
Fox Point Foundation for its financial support, the many volunteers and the village staff
who assist the effort. The 4th of July celebration is an opportunity for everyone to come
together and it is well appreciated by all.
Rick Monroe, Superintendent Nicolet High
School District
Glendale Supports Nicolet High School
I am honored to serve the City of Glendale as Superintendent of the
Nicolet School District, which is consistently one of top achieving
school districts in the state of Wisconsin. As a long-time North Shore
resident, and as the former Principal of Shorewood High School, I am
well aware of the time-honored, well-deserved, exemplary reputation the community holds
for Nicolet High School. From its very beginning in1955, Nicolet has had the support
and backing from the residents of our four special communities; Fox Point, Bayside, River
Hills, and Glendale, which value high quality education. The constituents of the Nicolet
School District understand the significance, and the economic impact an outstanding High
School has on the community. In addition to being a well-supported school district, Nicolet is privileged to serve a bright, creative, and motivated student body. Our students are
proud of Nicolet High School, where school spirit is alive and well.
A major initiative for this year is to develop a shared vision for an even better Nicolet
High School of the future. The process of creating the shared vision included all faculty
and staff, as well as student and parent representatives. Once our final vision for the future
is developed, it will serve as our guide, and give our efforts a common direction and focus
for the next few years. School District goals and objectives will be derived from that common vision as well.
Nicolet High School has so much that is noteworthy that I believe there is nothing that
we cannot accomplish if the stakeholders of the community work together. I have thirty
years of professional educator experience, and can say I have never felt the level of excitement and spirit that I feel now at Nicolet. We are fortunate to have a highly qualified faculty, staff, and School Board to serve our community. Providing a quality educational
experience for all of our students is vitally important work, and that is the challenge that
we gladly accept.
Bud Schneider G.M. Bayshore
One year in and Bayshore Town Center is going strong!
On Nov. 2, 2006 the new Bayshore opened its doors to the public
with a flurry of media attention and crowds eager to see Wisconsin’s
most unique shopping destination.
What most have discovered is that Bayshore is more than just a shopping destination. Visitors to the town center have found not only a great mix of retail
stores, but also upscale apartments that overlook our terrific town square. Bayshore has
also become a favorite dining destination with restaurants such as The Cheesecake Factory,
Bravo!, California Pizza Kitchen, Cameron’s Steakhouse and Devon Seafood Grill among
others.
Since opening last year, we’ve added a number of retail and dining options for people
to enjoy. New stores and restaurants that have opened over the past 12 months include:
Rockport, Chico’s, Apple Computer, J. Crew, Eddie Bauer, bebe, Yankee Candle and bd’s
Mongolian Grill.
Beginning in early December, the public will experience the latest addition to
Bayshore’s entertainment offerings, the opening of the IPic Entertainment Center. The
38,000-square-foot venue will be a one-stop destination for people looking for a night out.
The entertainment center will include a six-screen theater with six-foot wide loveseats
and will offer reserved seating and complimentary valet parking. For shows beginning
after 6 p.m., guests 21 years of age and older will be welcome to attend. Guests will also
be able to enjoy the 200-seat Ovations restaurant and the 120-seat Sequel bar for a “casual-chic” dining experience.
IPic Entertainment will also feature an upscale bowling venue called Pinstrikes, where
there will be 11 lanes for guests to enjoy along with an upscale setting featuring a variety
of drinks and food. It will be the first venue of its kind in the metro Milwaukee area.
Not only is Bayshore Town Center a shopping and entertainment destination, it is offering a whole new way to work. Businesses are recognizing the powerful perks Bayshore
is able to offer, which include luxury apartment homes, casual and fine dining, specialty
retail shops, 24-hour security and a convenient location.
Office space is available for small businesses needing 1,000 to 1,500 square feet or to
larger organizations that need 20,000 square feet or more. Special features include flexible
space plans, distinct finishing details, accessible entry points and wireless Internet access.
Bayshore caters to today’s busy professionals. A person working at Bayshore can start
their day with a workout at LA Fitness, walk to their office, and then have lunch or coffee
with a client at one of several restaurants. At the end of the day, one can meet up with
family and friends for entertainment or shopping – all within easy walking distance.
This evolution has greatly influenced the dynamics of Bayshore, making it a true town
center where the community can gather for both business and leisure purposes. Our first
year has been a great success and our evolution will continue in 2008. We look forward
to seeing you in the future.

Tips For Getting Into the Holiday Mood
The Holidays are supposed to be a time of peace, love
and goodwill to all. But with all the stress, demands and
commotion of the season, sometimes we feel more like
Scrooge than Santa Claus. Here are some moderately easy
instructions for “Getting into the Holiday Mood”.
• Organize and Shop early. Holiday spirits can quickly
evaporate when fighting for parking and struggling
through crowds.
• Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environment a happy holiday. Say it with a smile and mean
it.
• Play Holiday music. Extend the experience – start early
and continue to the end of the year.
• Watch Holiday movies. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a good
one for reviving the Holiday spirit, or how about “How the
Grinch Stole Christmas.” Check with Hollywood Video for more excellent choices.
• Start to decorate your house a little earlier for the Holidays – keep them up a little longer.
• Don’t spend more money than you have. Anxiety over after-Christmas bills can ruin
your holiday.
The true holiday spirit is more about love and kindness, not just materialism and shopping. Do your best to balance commercial and spiritual aspects of the Holidays.
If all else fails – eat a lot of cookies and stollen!
Tell us what you do to get in the Holiday mood and we may publish them online now at
www.glendale-chamber.com, and in next years News & Views list.
Understanding the Symbolisms, Rituals
and Real Significance of Chanukah
By: Rabbi Nachman Levine, Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah
The mitzvah, or commandment, of Chanukah is to light candles
for eight days. We start with one on the first day and continue
adding an additional new candle each night until we build up to
eight candles, which are all lit on the eighth night. Why do we
light them in this manner? Perhaps we can answer that there can be no future unless the
past is carried forward. When the first day of Chanukah passes and the second day arrives,
we kindle a new light for the second day, but we rekindle the first day’s candle again, and
so for all the eight days. We believe that today’s light cannot be kept aglow unless it burns
with the light of yesterday, and tomorrow’s light is not assured unless today’s accompanies
it. No younger generation can succeed unless it stands side by side with the previous generation to learn and take guidance from it. Chanukah teaches that the youth of this generation is aglow with the faith and tradition of the generations past. And so, we continue
to remember with fondness and warm memories, the values of the past generations that we
now carry into the future.

Spirit of the Season
Teaching Children to Give of Themselves
Many families wince at the official start of the holiday
season. In addition to the routine you typically follow
during the year, you now go in search of the perfect gift
for loved ones, decorate the home and bake dozens of
cookies. As you rush through these tasks that are intended
to be enjoyable and provide your family a memorable holiday experience, what do your children learn about the
spirit of the season from your actions?
Perhaps your children wish they had more time to
spend enjoying the holidays with you or they might want
to participate in this hustle and bustle of preparing for the
holidays. Get them involved! What if this year you could help your child learn from you
the true spirit of the holidays?
Cultivate their compassion. Children want to help prepare the meals and share meaningful time with you, Mom and Dad. Children usually display their best behavior as the
holidays near, hoping to impress you and the elves bearing gifts.
Parents can present many gift options to children to instill the pleasure of giving and
receiving. It is important that children understand that charitable acts do not always mean
donating money. Suggest that your children give of themselves by bestowing their time and
talents as gifts this season. Taking the trash out or shoveling snow for an elderly neighbor
gives the gift of a child’s time. By spending time reading to a grandparent or person whose
eyesight is not what it used to be, your child learns the meaning of giving throughout the
year. Older children can donate time to baby-sit for a neighbor who needs to run holiday
errands or to a single parent who can use some time for them. Remember, the holidays can
be stressful for children too, so keep gift-giving pressures to a minimum.
The Gift of Giving…helps to get your whole family in the giving spirit. Take hot chocolate, marshmallows and a family favorite holiday story to a children’s hospital. Let the
children there know that you care or consider visiting or adopting CONTINUED PAGE 9

For Men’s Eyes Only
17 Rules of Shopping for Women’s Holiday Gifts.
Members of the male gender are hereby instructed to follow these rules
or risk lack of relationship bliss beyond the holidays
1. Newspaper is not wrapping paper. Neither is a plastic bag from the supermarket.
2. Flowers are not gifts, they’re a pretty garnish to accompany gifts.
3. If you are going to buy said garnishes - buy roses, monochromatic tulips, orchids on
the stem or bird of paradise.
4. Practical gifts are a federal offense. You are better off giving the garnish above than
any of the following: coffeemaker, paper shredder, vacuum cleaner, computer, smoke
alarm or forklift. Unless she specifically asks for it and then said gift should be surrounded
by a more personalized gift as well.
5. Acronym gifts are likewise violations: CD, DVD, BVD’s.
6. If you don’t trust your taste, buy her a service: a massage, facial, or manicure.
7. You shall not willfully ignore this obvious but crucially important shortcut: Ask
her friends and family for suggestions, especially her friends.
8. Pay attention to the small print. She says: “I loved that bracelet so and so was wearing.” Your actual translation: “Buy me that bracelet.”
9. You can never go wrong with cashmere or alpaca.
10. Try giving six wrapped wine bottles, each labeled with a watershed relationship
moment: first anniversary, first baby, first house, et cetera. Open and drink when you arrive at said moments.
11. Avoid self-improvement gifts, even if she asks for them. A book on the South Beach
Diet will not make her happy.
12. When buying clothes, it’s safest to stick to things that will not lead to further selfesteem issues involving the size of her body parts.
13. Don’t buy lessons. Yoga sessions and pottery classes put the onus on her, and no one
likes the onus.
14. Snooping is not a violation; snooping is encouraged! When she is not home, look
in her closet to see if she likes Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley or Chanel clothing. If it’s
Chanel, quietly close the closet door and back away. You were never there.
15. Find an item that she is most proud of and buy a newer, better, more expensive version of the identical item as long as said item is not of the number 4 category.

16. Perform due diligence. The next time
she is paging through a magazine, listen to her instead of nodding vacantly. Ask to see the
item she’s drooling over. Make a mental note. Buy it!
17. When buying reflect upon your appreciation and romance, from the heart and not
the head. ... By Sandra Moon News & Views Contributing Writer
Wine Tips Primer
FOR MEN’S EYES ONLY FROM PAGE 10
Should I Bring a Gift for the Host When
Attending a Holiday Party?
When going to a Holiday party, it is appropriate to bring a gift according to Cathleen Hanson founder of the International School of Protocol. Important tips when giving a gift.
Special chocolates are always welcome and some might say healthy. * A nice bottle
of wine or liquor for sipping after the party sends a wonderful “thank you for inviting
us message.”** When giving food make it a Gift Basket filled with jams, jellies, bread,
fruit or muffins containing a card that says “You are entertaining us tonight, tomorrow’s
breakfast is on me,” can be a real nice touch.*** Always include a note. Hosts have a
million things to think about during the party, and remembering who brought the gift
might slip their mind. When bringing flowers be sure to include a vase. The host usually does not have time to find a vase and prepare the flowers. ****
Useful wine information just in time for the Holidays.
Use these tips as a handy refresher course, or share it with a friend.
Serving Wine
1. Wine is best enjoyed when served at the proper temperature:
40-45 degrees for sparkling, 40-50 degrees for whites, 50-55 degrees for lighter reds, and 60-65 degrees for full-bodied reds.
2. If you forgot to put that bottle of white wine in the refrigerator an hour before dinner, it’s perfectly okay to stick it in the
freezer for 10 minutes.
Wine & Guests
1. When pouring wine for guests, follow culinary tradition:
serve all of the women first.
2. If a guest brings a bottle that doesn’t match the cuisine,
open it before dinner and serve it as an aperitif.
Wine & Food Pairing
1. Simple grilled halibut matches best with Sauvignon Blanc; halibut topped with a rich

How To Keep Your Pet Safe
This Holiday
By Ellen Zielinski
Keep pets away from preservatives you put
in tree water, drinking it can cause vomiting or
diarrhea. Also, protect them from spilled orcontained antifreeze- it is highly poisonous
If your pet is not a good traveler - it might
be best to board them. Our GCC members,
Dog Tired Day Care (see their ad in this issue),
Trim Time or North Shore Doggie Daycare,
Glendale, have boarding capacity. Keep your pet on their regular feeding and exercise
schedule during the hectic Holidays; it is less stressful for them.
Keep pets away from - tinsel, ribbon, bubbling holiday lights and angel hair – they can
all be toxic or lethal.
If you have playful pets - avoid metal ornament hooks – replace them with ribbon,
twine or yarn, and keep your treasured ornaments at the top and non-breakable ones on the
lower half of the tree. Buy your pet a safe toy, to play with instead, at Pet Supplies Plus
in Glendale.
No chocolate - it contains theobromine, which can lead to tremors, arrhythmia and
seizures in dogs
Supervise all candles - they are attractive to your pet, especially in a dark room, and
could lead to serious burns, spilled wax, or even worse, a house fire.
Keep Out of Reach - holiday ivy, holly, mistletoe, balsam, juniper, cedar, pine, fir, hibiscus and poinsettias plants from both pets and young children - they are all toxic..
If your dog or cat gets sick from any one of these toxic or lethal products, immediately
call your vet, or the 24-hour Animal Emergency Center in Glendale – 414-540-6710
Most Importantly - even though we are all extremely busy this time of year- the best
ingredient for a happy and healthy pet is to remember to give them a daily dose of a little
attention and love. In our case, our dog Ginger (pictured above) would rather have a pet,
hug, walk or massage than all the treats at the pet store. Happy, Safe Holidays to all.

[WINE TIP PRIMER FROM PAGE 11] cream sauce matches best with Chardonnay.
2. Hearty fare with a hearty wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
3. Fresh fruit with sparkling wine or a sweet, dessert-style wine.
4. Pizza, hamburgers, or other “comfort foods” with Zinfandel, Syrah or Merlot.
5. Drink the wine you like with the food you like; there are no “wrong” answers if you
enjoy the match.
6. Remember that when in doubt, the “old” general wine and food pairing rule is still
reliable: white wine with white meat and red wine with red meat.
Storing Wine
1. Always store wine bottles on their sides so that the wine inside is in contact with the
cork. This prevents the cork from drying out, cracking and allowing air in the bottle.
2. Most wine will keep for a few days after opening. If you don’t finish a bottle, put the
cork back in and, if you plan to keep it for several days, put it in the refrigerator. Yes, this
applies even to red wines.

Special Elevator Ribbon Cutting Really Honors Joe Laur
& His Incredible Community Achievement
L to R: Carl Vredenbrect (Glendale Senior Citizens
Club), Glenn Presser (Former Head-Glendale Recreation Department), Jeanne Reuter (Carlson Wagonlite Agency), Steve Rinzel (President-North Shore
Rotary Club), Taylor Laur, Ruth Laur (TreasurerGlendale Senior Citizens Club), Joe Laur (Vice President- Glendale Senior Citizens Club), Alberta Darling (Wisconsin State Senator), Nolan Benson,
Hildegard Smeby (Glendale Senior Citizens Club),
Leonard Jackson (County Community Block Grant
Department), Dale Schmidt (President/CEO-GCC),
Shirley Zembrosky (Glendale Senior Citizens Club),
Jerry Tepper (Mayor-City of Glendale) and Robert
Porshe (Board Member, GCC).
The October 18, 2007 Ribbon Cutting, at Glendale’s Glen Hills Middle School, commemorated more than the new private elevator for Glendale Senior Club members and
the special needs students, teachers and visitors - it also honors the almost super human
determination and achievement of Joe Laur, retired Senior Club President.
It is because of Laur’s belief, perseverance and unrelenting commitment to a meaningful
vision, in the face of almost insurmountable obstacles, that he managed to raise $265,000
for the purchase and installation of this special needs elevator for Glen Hills Middle
School.
His story of achievement, that many once thought he would never realize, should be included and taught to children at Glen Hills Middle School, in addition to their academic
education. The teachers certainly have the enduring, tangible proof to support the declaration that - whatever the well-educated mind, at any age, can conceive, believe and persistently pursue, it can achieve. Joe Laur certainly is that inspiration - at an age where
most men are content to sit in an easy chair, he is still taking that chair apart and reconstructing it to make it better.
This elevator would have never occurred without Joe Laur’s unrelenting vision and determination to bring this gift to the community. This is the real story here, and that is why
Joe Laur was the recipient of the GCC’s 2007 Exceptional Community Contribution
award. In a world where we have so many bad examples influencing our lives and the
lives of our children, isn’t it nice to be able to proudly point to a stellar example like Joe
Laur. Thank you, Joe. Dale A. Schmidt, GCC President-CEO / News & Views Editor.
LA Fitness Goes “Full Court” for GCC Members
Open House
Caption: Dale Schmidt, President/CEO-GCC moderating Question and Answer Session with Keynote
Speaker Carl Mueller of Mueller Communications
Over 100 GCC members, employees and guests attend the first Smart Business Leadership Luncheon
Series at the Radisson North Shore.
Carl Mueller, of Mueller Communication, was the first of many key executives and leaders
that will be asked to present important and proven business, marketing, management and
leadership insights for our members. Need to know informational insights, not always
readily available to our busy time committed business members and their employees, was
offered in an interactive concentrated form over lunch.
On November 1, 2007, at the launch of the “Smart Biz” Leadership Luncheon Series,
invited Keynote speaker, Carl Mueller, Owner and President of Mueller Communications,
spoke to a filled ballroom of GCC members, employees and guests, at the Radisson North
Shore, Glendale.
Carl Mueller and his company are well-recognized media, public relations and marketing
experts. Mueller Communications’ impressive client list includes AT&T, WE Energies,
Mandel Group, Milwaukee Brewers, Steiner + Associates, Lynde & Harry
Bradley Foundation – to name a few. His presentation covered practical and useful public
and media relations, marketing, communication and crisis management strategies. Each attendee received an interactive, private business self-evaluation form, followed by a moderated question session with Carl Mueller and follow up questions from the audience.
“The ‘Smart Biz’ Leadership Series is a member support program that I have wanted to
offer for several years, and now we have the membership base and interest that justifies
and warrants the sizable effort required to bring this ongoing series to our members,”
said Dale Schmidt, GCC President-CEO and events planner-coordinator. “The need for
our members to know this important information has always been there, and it is never
more important then today. As we all realize, we operate in a highly competitive, rapidly
changing global marketplace. To stay ahead of the rest we need to constantly learn from
the best.”
The “Smart Biz” Leadership Series is dedicated to providing successful proven
business and marketing strategy insights. Speakers will be seasoned professionals that
have achieved and can provide the desired results members can readily use.
In a little under two hours, and for the cost of a good lunch, member attendees and their
assigned employees will receive not easily gained information from those that have been
there and done it. This series will not contain theories or textbook hypothetical concepts
– only proven, result-harden information and strategies that members and their employees
can take away and start to apply today.
Thanks to Heidi Hunter and her Radisson North Shore staff, they did a great job and the
GCC day-of-the-event support team.

GCC Sponsored Events Set Attendance Records In 2007
Throughout the year, the GCC produced, coordinated and sponsored many events for our
constantly growing North Shore members, their employees and guests. Some of these
events were created specifically for the public. Based on the favorable response, more
GCC public events for the North Shore will be planned in the future.
The following section is dedicated, especially at this time of the year, to the presentation
and acknowledgment of the many GCC business members that attended, hosted, assisted
and whose generous sponsorship made it all possible for our members and the North Shore
Communities. On behalf of the GCC, have a wonderful holiday. Dale A. Schmidt, President-CEO, Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

gave each attendee a free appetizer card for the next time that they dine with them. In addition, each person received the GCC “Attendee Rewards Coupon,” worth over $30.00 in
value – making the GCC the chamber that provides the most event and membership value

The Devon management and staff did a wonderful job under a demanding full room situation. Special thanks to Devon’s outgoing G.M., Ryan Doerr, incoming G.M., Scott Jordan, and an extra special acknowledgement to Stacy Lucus, Dir. of Sales, for her wonderful
assistance.
The GCC – Devon hosted event created a great mix of chamber business members
and a unique opportunity to meet, network and establish initial contacts, on a larger scale,
with those not-always-easy-to reach business members.
New introductions were made, contacts established and future business was discussed.
One member later reported that they got into a service trade show with a large company
because of a referral contact they gained at the event.
GCC member Patricia Clason (Center for Creative Learning) autographed her
new book, “Speaking of Success,” which she co-authored with Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard and others. Patricia offered them to members with a special bonus and donated part

Owner of Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center
Purchases Diane Building
First floor renovation, now in progress, designed to increase needed service capacity
Chiropractor, Dr. Corey J. Schneider recently
purchased the Diane Building at 5261 N. Port
Washington Rd., where he has been practicing
since Goodyear Chiropractic moved from
Whitefish Bay to the Diane Building in 2005.
Prior to the purchase, Goodyear Chiropractic
occupied two-thirds of the 5,000 square foot
space on the first floor. Schneider has now taken
over the entire first floor with completion of
renovation anticipated to be some time around
the end of this year.
“The expanded space will contain four more treatment rooms, a larger rehab. studio, massage rooms, an expanded waiting room and larger office space,” said Schneider. Several businesses, including GCC member, BrightStar Healthcare, occupy part of the
second floor and there is additional office space immediately available for lease.
Schneider also plans to work on some improvements for the exterior of the building
sometime next year. GCC member, Goodyear Chiropractic Health Center, is located. at
5261 N. Port Washington Rd. in Glendale. You may reach them by calling 414-332-6001.
Give Children The Gift of Self-Esteem & Confidence
J.K. Lee Academy of Fox Point builds confidence & self-esteem in children – using
appealing self-defense training. “When your child rises their hand in class when they
would not before – that is Confidence. When your child stands up for themselves when
being picked on – that is also Confidence. When your child does their homework without
being asked – that is Discipline and Self-Esteem,” states Sandra Moon, a mother of a child
that attends J.K. Lee Tae Kwan Do academy
The J.K. Lee Academy is dedicated to these objectives and involved parents love it because as they become complimentary spectators to their child’s achievements, they also
create a wonderful opportunity to build a stronger relative bond with their child.

Takeaway, Fox Point for seven years. When Jane’s was sold, Marietta, by popular demand,
started her new catering business in her home to service the many customers she had developed. Quickly she realized she needed to have a larger place to service the increasing

catering business called Mangia Mangia.
Mangia Mangia serves food that is cooked just like at home. Breakfast and lunch
service is available as well as a deli case; homemade soups that change daily for take out,

From Globe Trotting Executive to Café Forte
NEW BUSINESS CONT. FROM PAGE 15 ...
From Cable TV Marketing Executive To
Proud New Owner of Dinner by Design
After 26 years in the corporate world, North Shore
resident, Brian Quirk, traded his executive suit for a
chef’s uniform and recently purchased the Dinner By
Design franchise in Glendale. It appears that he could
not be happier.
“When Dinner By Design first opened in Glendale in
2005, I said to my wife why didn’t we think of that?
We would have loved to have that kind of meal assemNew Dinner by Design Owner, Brian Quirk bly service available to us when we were raising our
young children and trying to balance all that with our careers,” said Quirk. “I was equally
fascinated and envious at the same time.”
Quirk and his wife became a customer and admired the professionalism, quality,
selection and price (less than $3.00 per serving). While many opt to come in or order over
the phone / internet and have Dinner By Design prepare their selected entrées, about fortyfive percent of the customers love to come in and prepare it themselves.
When the cable firm that he had been working for as an executive was sold, Quirk took
that as sign, and a perfect time to act on his dream of having his own business. As luck
would have it, the local Glendale Dinner By Design was for sale. Now, the very business
he wished he had thought of is now his.
“The Dinner By Design meal assembly concept is a wonderful social experience
where everyone has a lot of fun as they quickly prepare their foods. In less time than
it takes to go out to dinner you can prepare 12 entrees that can each feed 2-3, or 4-6,” said
Quirk. Both he and his staff help supervise every step and everything is already there for
the customer. No shopping, no prep work and best of all, no clean up, is the printed promise
to their customers. They host fundraisers and Quirk has developed a corporate rewards program for employees. New GCC member, Dinner By Design, also has prepared entrees
and desserts in the freezer for quick pick up. They are located at 6150 N. Port Washington
Rd. Glendale - 414-906-8050
Irina’s Kitchen – Love What You Did With The Place
Roman and Irina Kit recently changed their
restaurant name, but then they really had no
choice. The business that they purchased in Glendale, some four years ago, was a bagel and limited
deli called Jonathan’s. While they still make fresh
bagels every day, a bagel place it is not.
Roman and Irina Kit have created a wonderful family-style breakfast, lunch and dinner
restaurant that serves some of the best homemade food in the North Shore. At Irina’s Kitchen,
they call their food “real” homemade and they should know, because they make the food
fresh daily, from scratch.
That is just one of the many added customer benefits of dining at a restaurant that is family owned and operated. This is especially true when the owners personally love to cook
and see their many loyal customers as an extended family that they want to continually
please.
Breakfast offers an amazing selection of omelets, over 20 to be specific. They will make
your eggs any way you want them and serve them up with their homemade daily bread,
bagels or bialys. They serve fresh breakfast pancakes, along with many other selections.
Lunch and Dinner offer daily specials, three choices of soups, 33 different combinations
of burgers, sandwiches and wraps. If that isn’t enough, tell Roman or Irina and they will
make it your way. On Friday, Fish Fries, or broiled fish entres with great German Pancakes.
In addition to the Daily Dinner Specials they offer a wonderful selection of menu entrees, everything from Fish and Seafood to Steak, Corned beef (some of the best around),
to Chicken Shish Kabob and Fettuccini with Meatballs and Marinara, to name a few.
GCC member, Irina’s Kitchen, is located at 325 W. Silver Spring Dr. Glendale, across
from Bayshore T.C. and they are open seven days a week- 414-964-8277.
Lupe Duenas Brings New Coffee Experience to North Shore
After 20 years as a globe-trotting executive, Lupe Duenas made a career change. That change, an inviting upscale coffee shop, Café Forte located in Mequon. Lupe
moved to Milwaukee in 1995 working for Metavante as the
vice president of international sales and development. Loving what she did but working 18 hours a day helped propel
Lupe to make a change, the purchase of Café Forte in November of 2004. Her international travel exposed her to
rich and unique tastes and cultures; one thing was the same everywhere, coffee. Bold
espresso in Spain and Portugal, café con leche in France and Italy and Turkish blends
throughout Ethiopia and India. “ I have always been fascinated with the coffee industry”
Lupe said, “It has a lot to do with the specific culture and country.”
A Unique Place To Have a Meeting or Socialize in a Comfortable, Quiet Atmosphere
GCC member Café Forte occupies 2700 square feet separated into various sections and
offers Wireless Internet. The right side is open with tables and chairs, a more businesslike atmosphere; the left is made comfortable for reading or studying; complete with
couches and coffee tables. The double-sided fireplace, appealing to everyone. Businesses
can occupy the meeting room, which accommodates 8-10 people comfortably or if needed,
space is available for as many as 50-60 people. Café Forte also serves as an art gallery with
pictures, paintings and other artifacts from local artists on display and for sale. “The environment looks upscale, but it’s welcoming and inviting. It’s contemporary, yet soothing,” Duenas stated.
Lupe Duenas has chosen some traditional coffeehouse items for her menu, such as lattes,
cappuccino, espresso, tea and pastries. Café Forte also offers soups and sandwiches and
has recently added wine and beer to the offering. “I truly enjoy all the people and connecting with the community,” states Lupe. Stop in soon for a great cup of coffee, tea, wine or
beer at Café Forte, 10530 N. Port Washington Rd., Mequon and enjoy your all too infrequent special moments.
Editor Summation -- The vibrant fabric of our North Shore communities is sewn with
the strong threads of individual entrepreneurialism of the smaller, locally owned and operated businesses. For many, they not only support the community with their invested
business commitment and services – they also reside there.
Our strength, as a North Shore family of communities is in supporting and encouraging
the locally owned and operated smaller businesses through our ongoing patronage, as
much as we do their larger brother’s and sister’s. These four new businesses are prime
examples of entrepreneurialism in action on the North Shore. Dale A. Schmidt, GCC
President-CEO.

News & Views Interviews John Dodds About The Packers
N&V- Can the Favre Magic Last? J.D. – “Yes. As I mentioned over the last few years,
I have watched every one of his home games since 1992 and have seen no appreciable decline in his skills. The only noticeable sign of age is he does not like to run out of the backfield and take hits unless absolutely necessary. He was not washed up in 2005 with his 29
interceptions. He was a gunslinger without any bullets as injuries disseminated the RB’s,
WR’s, TE’s, and the middle of the offensive line. The 2005 special teams were horrible
and gave Favre poor field position at every exchange of the ball. Mike Sherman’s schemes
of longer pass routes were not suited to Favre’s quick West Coast passing success of the
mid-90s. With more talent, and the shear joy of winning games, Favre plays two more
years, maybe three.”
N&V- Can the Team Sustain the Momentum? J.D.- “Yes. As long as there are no injuries to key frontline players, Favre, Clifton, Tauscher, Jennings, Driver, and on defense,
Kampman, Harris, Woodson, and any of the LB’s. The NFC is weak. The best team is
Dallas and they are beatable.”
N&V- What Weaknesses Do the Packers Have? J.D. – “One is the running game. The
RB’s by committee is barely working. Another is the poor play of the C’s and OG’s in the
OL. GB lacks a fast TE who can get over the middle and keep the defense honest. Finally,
depth at OT, LB and CB is a concern.”
N&V- What are Green Bay’s Strengths? J.D. - “(1) Brett Favre. Other than Tom Brady
and Peyton Manning, no QB has played better in 2007; (2) DE Kampman and the defensive line. GB’s DL is its best since 1996 and among the top five in the NFL; (3) Special
teams – they have showed dramatic improvement. Crosby is a top-flight kicker who could
be there ten years. Punter Ryan has been outstanding as a holder and directional punter.
The special teams’ coverage units have more depth and talent; (4) The CB’s. Harris and
Woodson are big and physical, and (5) GB’s OT’s. Clifton and Tauscher neutralize the
opponent’s pass rush.”

N&V- Bottom Line: Will the Pack Make the Playoffs? J.D. – “Yes. GB is the youngest
team in the NFL – has a 38-year-old QB playing at the highest level – has a top defense –
and solid special teams, so, yes, anything can happen. After the Kansas City win, GB was
11-1 over its last 12 games. Only NE has been better. Barring injuries to frontline players,
GB has as good a chance as any NFC team to make it to the Super Bowl. Tough road
games at Detroit and at Dallas will tell the tale. Another thing to consider - can GB get a
bye and home field advantage for the playoffs?”
