I was helping Jean Welshman judge the second annual East Bonnet Parade on Main Street, and I was pleased to see such a huge turnout. Congratulations to Pond Mills for decorating the best bonnet and for Sasha (Maria Bielman’s granddaughter) for gaining the top marks for best model. Thanks to all our models for braving the trek along Main Street with beribboned and bedazzled hats in honour of Easter Monday. In the month of May, we honour mothers, and I want to say a great big, “Happy Mother’s Day” to all the mothers of Glendale Crossing. We will be celebrating Mother’s Day with a morning social, and we encourage you to attend. For my own part, I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my mother (get it?) She is a great part of my life and she is an awesome Mom. Call your Mom, Think of your Mom, Visit your Mom, Be a great Mom – all good suggestions for Mother’s Day. We have lots of folks getting ready for the Alzheimer’s Walk for Memories on May 14th. Our team is raising funds, and I appreciate all the support given for our BBQ’s and bake sale. On May 2nd, we will be here washing cars out back. Come on over and make a donation, and get a nice clean car. I love when someone else washes my car, and I love to make a contribution to a very worthy cause. Remember…..May 2nd – CAR WASH! Have you ever been rock-picking? As a farmer’s daughter, rock-picking is a rite of passage for young people. We picked rocks on our fields and were volunteered to help out at the neighbour’s fields as well. Well….if you look to the West of the building, you will see a great expanse of lawn with lots of rocks sticking out. We need to get rid of the rocks before we start mowing the lawn and we are asking for some help. Sara (our volunteer) and some friends have offered to help, and Chanel has volunteered her children (sound familiar?) Would you like to help? We are thinking of getting onto the lawn on Monday, May 23rd at 10:00 am, and we hope to finish in time for a pizza lunch. The more people we have, the faster the picking will go. If you are interested, please tell Brian Chouinard or myself that you, too, want to pick rocks. Would you like some rocks for your garden? If you pick rocks, you can take some rocks home. Or perhaps you would like to take home a pet rock….we have lots. You will be receiving a notice with your billing to inform you that the rates for the cable service will be going up as of June 1st. We are able to provide a bulk cable service through Rogers for basic cable, but if you wish to have more specialty channels, you may call Rogers cable. On May 12th, Bill and Elsie Beaudoin will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary! The couple first met at the age of 13 in British Columbia. Over the time spent together they have enjoyed travelling everywhere and have lived in BC, Alberta & Ontario. In their younger years they volunteered their time with their children’s lacrosse, soccer, bowling and hockey teams. As they got older they continued to volunteer in every town they lived in - at local legions, meals on wheels, golfing events and various others. Along the way they made long last relationships with an abundance of friends in every community they lived in. Bill & Elsie and Bill looking very festive at Elsie were always inventing new ideas for our Hawaiian luau last year. crafts and always figuring out a way to make more money. Bill & Elsie enjoy spending time with their children and their spouses Renee & Derreck, Craig & Kim. They have 3 grandchildren - Miles, Alicia & Brent and are expecting a 4th this year. They have as well 2 great grandchildren - Joshua and Nathaniel. They have also welcomed Jennifer and Tyler into the family and one day look forward to attending the weddings for their grandchildren Miles & Alicia. They enjoy going for walks with their dog Whiskey who has been their constant companion for the past 6 years. Bill & Elise will be receiving 50th anniversary congratulatory certificates as requested by their daughter Renee from the Prime Minister of Canada, Premier of Ontario, Governor General of Canada and the Mayor of London. Heart- felt congratulations on your day of celebration, from your Family, Friends and the staff at Glendale Crossing for achieving this milestone! Written by their daughter Renee, with contribution by Jessica, recreation on Pondmills. We will remember them….. It is with great sadness we remember those residents who have passed away; Bev Bodker George Dalke Barry ”Joe” Doxtator Joyce Donaldson Muriel Morton Join us for a Celebration of Life the last Friday of the Month at 2pm in the Chapel. THE GLENDALE GAZETTE Volunteer Services Volunteers are love in motion ~ Author Unknown Volunteer Appreciation Yolande, Volunteer Coordinator Last month we celebrated our very first Volunteer Appreciation Event. It was so nice to see our volunteers together engaging in conversation and enjoying some delicious food. Thank you to Joe Galbraith for playing music for us as the evening began and to Paul Bernard for giving the welcoming speech which was well received by all our volunteers. His words were most sincere and appreciated by everyone. The evening would not have been possible without the support from the recreation staff, Jennifer Hall, Michelle, Cindy and her hard working team, and Chaplain Maureen. Also, thank you to the residents (you know who you are!) who came to Main Street to recognize and celebrate the volunteers for their commitment and dedication to the Village of Glendale Crossing. She has helped with many different programs, special events, and outings. She volunteers every Sunday with Church Service, every Monday for music night, and she also serves as a dining companion on the Byron neighbourhood. We are very thankful to Sarah who is always helpful, reliable, and a good friend to the residents. – Holly, Recreation Therapist A Spotlight on You: Jake Norwood On March 1st 2010 John Albert Norwood was the first resident to move onto the Brighton Neighborhood. He quickly became known lovingly as Jake. Jake is a man with a friendly face, forever a gentleman, & who always has a kind word to say. Jake was born in Edmonton, Alberta on May 23rd , 1916 making this year his 95th! When Jake was a young boy, his family packed up after their farm burnt down, and made the big move from Edmonton to Windsor, Ontario. Windsor would then become the home base for many world travels. Jake had an older brother and sister, as well as a younger brother Bob, with whom Jake has many fond memories. The boy grew up playing rugby. Jake, being only about 5’8” and 140 pounds, was one of the smallest players on the team. So he had to be fast! One of Jake’s favorite stories to tell is an account of how he had to start running in May so he would be ready for the rugby season that started in September. “I had to be quick, so no one would catch me!” On New Year’s Eve in 1938 Jake’s life would change forever. He was at a dance when he spotted a beautiful woman named Flo, and asked her to dance. She must have been impressed with his dancing, because not long after Flo became his wife. This was the beginning of a wonderful journey that lasted 67 years. Those years brought Jake and Flo four beautiful daughters who are the light of his life. As the family grew to 12 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, they spent as much time together with family as they could. Jake and Flo built a beautiful home in Fenelon Falls after retirement where many fond memories were made. Jake worked for Ford Motors as a parts and accessories manager. Working for Ford sent Jake and his family around the world. He worked in Windsor, Montreal, Vancouver, Oakville, South Africa, and Thailand, with each place proving to have its own challenges, but Jake wouldn’t have changed a thing. He often says to me: “My wife and I, We danced around the world. We were always the first ones on the floor and the last ones off.” This proved true all throughout Jake and Flo’s marriage, even with Jake’s last word to his wife being “Save the last dance for me”. Jake has been a wonderful addition to Glendale, and it has been a pleasure to get to know him and his family. Jake is definitely one special guy. A spotlight on Jake! Look for their Green Name tag that says “ Planting My Roots” !!** PAGE Chaplains Corner 7 Hidden in Plain View Don't grab your Bible---- I challenge you to do this without any outside assistance :-). One bit of advice I would give is to read the following through, before you start trying to solve it. The instructions are in the paragraph. Enjoy! There are 30 books of the Bible in this paragraph. Can you find them? Maureen , Our Chaplain This is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an airplane seat pocket, on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for hours. He enjoyed it so much, he passed it on to some friends. One friend from Illinois worked on this while fishing from his john boat. Another friend studied it while playing his banjo. Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued by it she mentioned it in her weekly newspaper column. Another friend judges the job of solving this puzzle so involving, she brews a cup of tea to help her nerves. There will be some names that are really easy to spot. That's a fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam, especially since the book names are not necessarily capitalized. Truthfully, from answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or a scholar to see some of them at the worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in this paragraph. During a recent fund raising event, which featured this puzzle, the Alpha Delta Phi lemonade booth set a new record. The local paper, The Chronicle, surveyed over 200 patrons who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As Daniel Humana humbly puts it, "The books are all right here in plain view hidden from sight." Those able to find all of them will hear great lamentations from those who have to be shown. One revelation that may help is that books like Timothy and Samuel may occur without their numbers. Also, keep in mind, that punctuation and spaces in the middle are normal. A chipper attitude will help you compete really well against those who claim to know the answers. Remember, there is no need for a mad exodus; there really are 30 books of the Bible lurking somewhere in this paragraph waiting to be found. God Bless. THE GLENDALE GAZETTE Help the “Glendalicious“ Team Fundraise for The London Alzheimer's Society’s “ Walk for Memories” The Alzheimer Society Walk for Memories is the largest fundraising event in the province dedicated to increasing awareness and raising funds for vital programs and services that support people living with dementia. It isn’t too late to join the team or make a pledge! Go to: www.walkformemories.ca Or talk to Jennifer Hall for more info about the team! Date: Saturday, May 14, 2011 Time: 9:00 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Location: Springbank Gardens Thank you so much to those who have contributed so far. Between the dress down day, BBQ’s and bake sale we have raised $810.46. All of which will go directly to the Alzheimer's society! A little history lesson: Victoria Day Victoria Day (in French: Fête de la Reine) is a federal Canadian statutory holiday celebrated on the last Monday on or before May 24, in honour of both Queen Victoria's birthday and the current reigning Canadian sovereign's official birthday. It is sometimes informally considered as marking the beginning of the summer season in Canada. The holiday has been observed since before Canada was formed, originally falling on the sovereign's actual birthday, and continues to be celebrated in various fashions across the country on the fixed date. Royal salutes (21-gun salutes) are fired in each provincial capital and in the national capital at noon on Victoria Day. In Quebec, the same day was, since the Quiet Revolution, unofficially known as Fête de Dollard until 2003, when provincial legislation officially named the same date as Victoria Day the National Patriots' Day. VOLUME 1, ISSUE 5 PAGE 9 Recreation Reflection What going on in recreation?!? As most of you are aware we have a staff member, eagerly awaiting to go on Maternity leave in May. We wish Holly in recreation all the best with her soon to be baby. While she is away on her Maternity leave please welcome, Dylan to the Byron neighbourhood. This month, please also welcome Dawn Smale as our new social worker. Dawn will be here Mondays and Wednesday providing social support to all the neighbour hoods. You can get ahold of her by calling ext 8010. A word on outings. Recently there has been some miscommunication on outings. While we try to accommodate all who wish to attend our outings, not all 192 of you will be able to go on every offered outing. Therefore, we rotate residents who would like to go, add additional buses for more popular outings and try and target residents with indicated interests ( for interest those who love baseball, will be more likely to be the ones who attend a ball game at Labatt Park). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. On Mothers Day, Sunday May 8th, we will be having a Mothers Day morning tea and social on Main Street starting at 10 in the morning. This “drop in” event is a great way for residents and families to celebrate all the wonderful contributions Mothers make. I would like to thank everyone who helped our “Walk for Memories” team fundraise for our local chapter of the Alzheimer's Society. As a community we have raised eight hundred and ten dollars from our events and much more from individual sponsors. You’ve made me proud Glendale! Well done! Every four months the recreation team meets for Quarterly Planning Meeting. Our meeting in April sparked some new and innovative ideas we will be implementing for the spring and summer months. New programs, such as “movin’ and groovin”, which is a dance based program will be added on to Thursday nights. Look for car shows, neighbourhood BBQ’s, fishing trips and summer fairs to come! As always, my door is always open and would love to hear any feedback on both the recreation programs and this newsletter. Thank you, Jennifer Hall, Director of Recreation and Editor of the Glendale Gazette. Around The Town : Rain, volunteers and bonnets! A trip out to Heeman’s Greenhouse… in the April rain! The “ Always do my best award” was awarded to Jason Luke, from environmental Services. Here is what Michelle Vermeeren said about him that night: “ This employee is best described as “keen” “eager” “enthusiastic” “dedicated” “intense”. Every day this team member puts his best foot forward while I nteracting with the residents on his neighbourhood and helping out his teammates. He understands what it is like to be a contributor to a team and he has ( left to right) Bob Kallenen, Jason Luke and volunteered to sit on many committees within the Jamie Schlegel pictured at our Staff Appreciation village, including the planning of this party. The event. residents have described him as a big teddy bear. He recently had an opportunity to assist one of our sister villages in Windsor for their opening, and their team just ate him up, saying that he worked so hard, was constantly positive and encouraging, and that he certainly represented Glendale Crossing well. Always willing to lend a hand….. please congratulate Jason Luke as the winner of the “always do your best” award.” I interviewed Jason to reflect on this award and his career here at Glendale Crossing. Jason first applied to Glendale Crossing in our early days with hopes of obtaining a full time position. He was currently working three part time jobs in order to provide for his family. Being the successful applicant of his full time role here meant that he could spend more quality time at home with his wife, and 2 children. Jason is very proud of the work he does here at Glendale. He loves working in Long Term Care because he gets to be resident centered and work with a team, unlike other positions he has had in the past where he did not get to interact with other persons, residents or staff. Not only does Jason appreciate the team atmosphere of his work, he loves that Glendale crossing has provided him with so many educational opportunities that have helped him to develop as a person and assist the residents on his neighborhood. This was the first time in his work as a housekeeping staff where he has learned lifts and transfers, CPR, and falls prevention. His thirst for knowledge is one of the reasons that Jason became the recipient of this award. Being involved in all aspects of Village life is Jasons forte. Jason commented that he hopes that Glendale Crossing is where he retires from. We hope so too, as the Village would not be the same without him. Congratulations Jason on your award and thank you for all of the hard work and dedication you have given to your teammates and residents at Glendale Crossing. Thank you to those residents that have attended the food committee meetings and have given input to the new menu cycle. Menu suggestion are always welcome at any time of the year. I would like to welcome my new assistant Director of Food Service, Lauren Emrich. Lauren started with Glendale Crossing from the very beginning. If you have any dietary question or concerns you can bring them to her attention. Once again I would like to invite anyone who is interested to attend the food committee meeting each month. Cindy Awde, Director of Food Services FAP(FUNCTIONAL ABILITIES PROGRAM) . A Message from your Kinesiologist…. May is Hungtington’s Disease Awareness Month What is Huntington disease? Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited brain disorder that causes cells in specific parts of the brain to die. Huntington disease is a genetic disorder. About one in every 10,000 Canadians has HD, but one in every 1,000 are touched by HD whether at risk, as a caregiver, family member or friend. The HD gene is dominant, which means that each child born to a parent with Huntington disease has a 50% chance of sharing the same fate. The symptoms of HD include: • emotional turmoil (depression, apathy, obsessive behaviour) • mental loss (inability to focus, think and recall, make decisions) • physical deterioration (weight loss, involuntary movements, diminished coordination, inability to walk, talk, swallow) The disease leads to complete incapacitation and, eventually, death. At the moment there are no treatments that will slow down or stop the disease in humans. But hope for a meaningful treatment has never been more real. In recent years, basic research has dramatically increased our knowledge of HD. Various promising treatment strategies are now in the drug discovery pipeline. More than ever, now is the time to step up the fight against HD. Please stop by the Fitness Club to pick up a brochure on Huntington’s Disease to learn more! New for May! This month we will be starting to go for a walk outside (as weather permits) every Monday and Wednesday morning at 11am. We will be going around the building on the path. For those of you needing assistance, I will be available to assist you. Please contact myself or let your neighbourhood staff know if you would like to join! Also new – As of May 2nd we will have a new member joining our team for four months. Her name is Michaela Fernandes and she is a co-op Kinesiology student from the University of Waterloo. Please give her a warm welcome! Athlete of the Month for March Every month there are many of you that put your best foot forward and work very hard to maintain or improve your overall health. This month’s Athlete of the Month has literally been reaching new heights with every step he takes. He has been determined in his climb to success and has managed to climb from the first floor to the third using the stairs!!! This is a huge accomplishment and he should be very proud of this achievement. Please join me in congratulating Les Quant from the Lambeth neighbourhood as April’s Athlete of the Month!! ! Amy Harbin, FAP Kinesiologist Nursing Note An Education Event: Diabetes May 17th The Canadian Diabetes Association will be here to offer us an educational in service on Diabetes. There will be sessions during the day from 13 pm and in the evening at 6 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. The presentation will be held in the chapel. I hope to see you there. Nursing Notes Nurse’s Week We are celebrating Nurses Week in the village from May 9-May 15th. I want to extend a huge thank-you to all the nursing staff for your hard work and dedication. Have fun this week and come out and participate in the activities planned in the village. This little poem about nurses says it just about right. Hearts of Gold by : Sherry York There are times in our lives when we sit down and wonder where our lives will lead us. Sometimes we get so caught up in our jobs that we forget what we truly represent. We get frustrated, aggravated, pushed to the limits and so mentally tired that we feel what is the use in being a Nurse. But then someone gives us a weak smile or holds our hand and may say "thank you, you are so special." Then we feel the warmth growing in our hearts. All the bad feelings disappear and are replaced by the core values that we present: human dignity, compassion, dedication, integrity, stewardship, leadership and excellence. So when the bad feelings begin to show take the time to say this prayer: Lord, help me to bring comfort where where is pain. Courage where there is despair. Acceptance when the end is near. A touch gentle with tenderness, patience, and love. And, always remember, all Nurses are truly blessed. For you see --- God gave them Hearts of Gold.
