National Conciliation and Mediation
Board (NCMB) is set to settle HAU
Management and HAU Teachers and
Employees Union (HAUTEU) Collective
Bargaining Agreement (CBA) deadlock.
On the other hand, the National Labor
Relations Commission (NLRC) is expected to settle isues regarding the Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) case filed by
the Union.
NLRC quasi-judicial agency attached to
the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and is mandated to adjudicate labor and management disputes
involving workers through compulsory
arbitration and alternative modes of dispute resolution. While the NCMB is an
angency designed to facilitate mediation
and voluntary arbitration on labor issues.
The deadlock issue was raised to the
NLRC after the National Conciliation and
Mediation Board (NCMB) failed to mediate both parties to settle CBA issues.
Last September 21, 2012, HAUTEU declared CBA negotiations deadlocked after 2 months of dialogues.
According to Philippine Labor Code,
CBA is “a negotiated contract between
a legitimate labor organization and the
employer concerning wages, hours of
work and all other terms and conditions
of employment in a bargaining unit, including mandatory provisions for grievances and arbitration machineries.”
HAUTEU spokesperson Veronica Pangilinan explained that they are trying
to negotiate and create a new CBA together with the University Management
because the previous CBA expired last
May, 2012.
Edna Marriza Santos, Chair of the Management Panel in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) talks, on the
other hand explained that the current
CBA will still be in effect because both
parties have not yet agreed upon a new
CBA.
Pangilinan states that the primary reason for the deadlock was because of issues with the year-end re-computation
of the 70% allocation of the Incremental
proceeds (IP) during the CBA negotiations.

Education (CHED) Memorandum Order

“Since we got the 7th place last time,
we’ve seen the student’s lapse. The
lapse would be that we are not that early
in terms of doing the review. What we’ve
done is as early as November, I’ve asked
Sir Charlie (Prof. Carlos Buan) to form
our official team for this year’s PAPJA

by November and since December to
January the students have been reviewing”, Psychology Program Coordinator
Howell Calma said.
Calma also got Mr. Daryl Malonzo to co-mentor the participants.

Apathy Curiosity
With the unfolding events concerning issues with the HAU Management and HAUTEU, it is considerably
shocking that students know little
to nothing about it. What we see,
the black eyesore fence, the chatters of our instructors and the sudden increase of security guards are
nothing more than small reflections
of what is truly happening. The concerning part is most students see
them nothing more than what they
are – tension between HAU Management and HAUTEU.
Instructors have expressed
their discontentment with their students,
but not the common displeasure from
poor grades or uncooperative students.
This time they’ve boldly expressed their
discontentment with how HAU Management has been handling their salaries
and benefits. This started as vague expressions of displeasure to what now
has led to blatant megaphone screeching speeches of disgust and disgruntlement.
The university on the other hand
has taken immediate action by calling
for numerous meetings with students.
Meetings organized by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) have earnestly tried
to explain to students HAU Management’s side of the story. A considerably
admirable move if not for their inability
to answer a simple question of why HAU
Management has continually declined
to do a re-computation of the 70%incremental proceeds from the recent tuition
fee increase.
Students have asked why HAU
Management has declined to do a recomputation of the 70% IP which is supposed to go to teachers and employee’s
salaries and benefits. HAUTEU is clearly
having doubts if the 70% IP is actually
going to their salaries and benefits. But
let us not forget, there wouldn’t even
be any 70% IP if there was no tuition
fee increase to begin with. This money
comes from us, the students. We are the
major stakeholder of this institution. It is
only right for us to ask how our money is
spent or at least allocated.
Some experts suggest that universities’ sociopolitical landscapes may
be a reflection of the general sociopolitical landscape of the society. This is not
difficult to understand because most of
the influential movers and thinkers of our
generation have had experienced university life at one point or another.
If we recall, majority of the major HAU strikes and boycotts of the past
have had transpired during the pre and
post EDSA Revolution period of our history. The active demonstrations and boycotts in HAU’s history may have been influenced by the general tone of activism
of that period. This is a far cry from the
current peaceful negotiations between
HAU Management and HAUTEU. Based
on our interviews and observations, we
infer that behind the black fence still lies
the willingness of both parties to settle
issues peacefully. Why settle things with
force when it can be resolved with diplomacy?
We cannot deny the fact that
the results of the collective bargaining
agreement between the Union and HAU
Management would eventually affect the
students. Today, it has already penetrated the consciousness of many us. And
yet, there seems to be a little to no clarity
of what is truly happening. Are students
just apathetic to what is happening? Are
we not interested as to why most of our
teachers are in a state of pure discontentment while new instructors are not?
There is no heavy price for being inquisitive. Indifference is deadlier than curiosity. Indifference may steer you away from
direct conflict but it’s your inquisitiveness
that will secure your rights.
In the recent years, HAU has
increased its tuition fees, and yet it
seemed that there was a little consultation with students. The university has
maintained its position that they have
indeed followed proper legal process in
increasing tuition fees. This process includes consultations with student leaders who would serve as the voice of the
students. Why then do we know nothing
of these consultations? HAU Management has said that they’ve placed posting regarding this matter. If this is true,
does this outcome indicate that for the
past few years,we, the students have
accepted tuition fee increases without
question? Or does this indicate that our
elected leaders have failed to voice our
side and have unwittingly signed papers that would allow the university to
increase tuition?
Perhaps,are we simply afraid to
ask? In an educational institution, fearing one’s inquisitiveness is an irony. A
university should be a safe place for a
meaningful discourse and not absolute
dogma. We must not allow our idealism
to be watered down by the fear of being
called to the OSA to explain. Mr. Adviento, the current Dean of Student Affairs,
is a relatively approachable person. He
would answer any query with the best of
his understanding. Our teachers are not
afraid to voice out their concerns as well.
But have you tried asking your classmates, class presidents, org leaders, the
CSC and the USC about the issue and
what they think their role in it is?
Your classmates and your class
president would probably be quick to
joke about the current problem that is
plaguing the university, the heightened
security, the hush-hush talk, and the
gates that have arisen. Ask your org
leaders and they’re probably waiting for
other leaders and students to start moving to see what their next move is.
How about your local CSC or
the USC? They are probably more than
willing to share recent developments with
their respective College Days or University Days Celebration, a task which they
are not required to do, but are compelled
to, having placed the University Days
above their responsibility of protecting
the rights of every student. Let us not
forget that the primary responsibility of
these student leaders is to represent the
students, not to organize concerts and
beauty pageants.
Have you even heard of a recent USC President who rejected an-

other tuition fee increase? While student
publications are dying because of the
lack of subscribers, student councils are
steadily gaining more budgets as student population grow. What action has
the USC done to truly address the needs
of the students? Do they even listen to
each other? Or have they opted to keep
quiet as political tensions beleaguer
their leadership?
In a situation such as a conflict
between HAU Management and Union,
it is the responsibility of our student leaders to help bring clarity and peace. They
cannot achieve this if they themselves
are oblivious to the realities of both parties. It is also our responsibility to be
aware of what is happening around us.
We should not remain standing and wait
for our leaders to feed us with the latest

Role Strain
W
hile thinking of a topic
to write for this column,
it suddenly came across
my mind how pre-service teachers,
most particularly the fourth year
have gone through what we call a
“role strain” in the course of taking
few more steps towards their ambition of becoming future educators. I
realized that we haven’t played only
one role for this current semester.
We aren’t only in the character of a
student, and this is where I got my
inspiration for this piece of writing.
Our field study courses give us
three roles at a time—we are students, at
the same time, we are student-observers
and facilitators. Likewise, when we were
teaching the elementary pupils for our
catechetical teaching instruction program, we were playing two roles then—
students and student catechists. Several
roles have been put on our shoulders for
the past semesters and this current semester, not to mention of course the role
conflict which we are experiencing with
the extra-curricular activities that others
are fulfilling like those who are part of
the student council and publication and
those who are working students plus the
roles and responsibilities that we have at
home.Well, adding to those academic
responsibilities is the role that we play
as demo teachers whenever we have
teaching demonstrations in our subjects.
Sometimes, I tend to think that we are
like Super humans for having been able
to surpass all the struggles that we have
come through. Of course, those things
mentioned are all part of becoming Education students and they are all part of
the battle for our dream that we have to
get through. For that, I can say that we
have gone far enough.
Some students may not really
understand what Education students
taking up Field Study courses do whenever they are observing. They may not
really have an idea what it takes to be
a student-observer. Well, let me give
you a little idea on that. Our field study
courses require us to complete 20 or
40 or 60 hours of observation in a real
classroom setting giving us the opportunity sometimes to facilitate class activities when asked by our cooperating
teachers. And because we are student
observers, we are required to have our
observation wearing our school uniform
which means a “uniform day” if we have
a scheduled observation on a Wednesday which in our case, we really do have
Wednesday observations since our
schedule runs from Mondays to Fridays.
Now, you probably already know why we
keep on wearing our school uniform during wash days, FYI only.
I vividly remember how other
students stare at us, especially when we
are inside the jeepney, when we wear
our school uniform on a wash day. Well,
they probably are thinking that maybe
we forgot that it’s a wash day that is why
we aren’t wearing a civilian outfit or maybe we have nothing more to wear that’s
why we are wearing our uniform. Well,
that is not just asupposition since some
of my friends and acquaintances are really telling me those things. Sometimes,
all I want to do is to place a huge tag on
my chest saying “I am a student-observ-
er!” just to get away from those looks and
judgments.
I also remember one of my diary entries during one of my observation
days which I wrote: “Today is Wednesday, which means that it’s a wash day.
Most of all, this day is the first day of the
University Days. That’s why I really hate
to have my observation and most especially to wear my uniform on a wash
day and on the first day of the University
Days. But who cares? I will have my observation and proudly wear my uniform
and I don’t care what people will say
against me for a real teacher can do
anything just for the sake of accomplishing whatever she needs to accomplish,
even sacrificing not to wear a good civilian outfit and wear school uniform on a
day where in no uniform is supposed to
be worn.”How’d you like that?
Of course, our struggle does
not end in completing the required hours
for our observation but we also have to
accomplish a number of worksheets and
make our entries for our portfolio. If I remember it right, I had 40 pages for my
Field Study 1 portfolio and 125 pages
for my Field Study 3 portfolio. And mind
you, we are required to make not only
one portfolio in a semester, but more
than one. In fact, there was a semester
wherein we were required to make three
portfolios which we had to submit at
nearly the same time. One among those
three portfolios contains 132 pages and
the other also contains more than 100
pages. Aside from those things, we also
have our thesis, oral defenses and presentations and other requirements in
other subjects which are too many to
mention, plus the feeling of allotting all
your life to school since every day, you
have to wake up early in the morning to
attend to your observation in your assigned school, finish in the afternoon
and get back to the university to attend
to your classes until evening, arriving
at home every day at 10pm, feeling ex-
hausted.
Is it easy for us to surpass all
these things? Perhaps, no. But I believe that there’s no easy way out in life.
There’s no shortcut in achieving our ambitions. We all have to get through a lot of
hardships before we reach the peak of
success. That’s how it goes.
It’s really a wonderful feeling
when you have successfully surpassed
all the things that you need to get
through. After everything gets done, you
will certainly feel proud of yourself and
fulfilled. No matter how demanding your
role and your sub-roles could be as a student struggling to be the man or woman
you see yourself to be in the future, just
accept and face the challenges for those
will make you equipped enough in your
future careers.
We have gone far, and we are
more than halfway towards our dreams
and this we owe a lot to all the people,
our teachers most of all, who have been
walking with us through the seemingly
ceaseless road towards success. Our
deepest gratitude goes to our teachers
who have been arming us with the necessary competencies that we must possess and who have been supporting us
all the way.
All the struggles that we have
gone through may be called as burdens
for others. But for us, we call them fulfillments. Our role as students may have
been so demanding but the roles and
the responsibilities that we have on our
shoulders are just making us prepared
enough once we are already immersed
in our own fields. We may have been
close to giving up but we are closer to
the end of this long road. All the workloads and hardships are all what we
need to become fully-equipped for our
future careers.
To all the teachers and pre-service teachers out there, kudos to all of
you!
RH bill proceedings due to the
CBCP’s interference. He was
taken away by officials shortly
thereafter and spent the night
locked up in jail, posting bail the
following day.
This audacious tour guide became a public figure overnight. His stunt
elicited disapproval from the Catholic
Church and admiration from people who
supported the same advocacy. The passing of what was then, the RH bill was at
a dead stand-still in congress. It was no
wonder it urged Celdran to voice out his
plight in public, although he claims that
heintended to protest outside the church
and merely entered to take shelter from the rain. He initially
had no intentions of bargingin amidsta religious rite and
was as a matter-of-fact surprised to see high ranking
members of the Church during the Ecumenical Service.
Two years after the
incident that made him the
headline on various national broadsheets.
Last January 28,
2013 he was
found guilty on
account of “offending religious
feelings”by the
Metropolitan Trial Court to serve
a minimum jail
sentence of 2
months
and
21 days to a
maximum of one
year, 1 month and
11 days of imprison-
ment. A verdict which insinuated an uproar from his supporters and the general
public, who believe that his conviction
will be a springboard for further incarcerations against the exercise of the “freedom of speech”.
Though as preposterous as the
law on “offending religious feelings” may
sound, albeit passé, Article 133 states
that “who, in a place devoted to religious
worship or during the celebration of any
religious ceremony shall perform acts
notoriously offensive to the feelings of
the faithful”, thus legally labeling Celdran’s outburst at the Manila Cathedral
as a crime under the Revised Penal
Code.
While legal sanctions must
be enforced, the sentence of 3
months to over a year is rather
severe as opposed to verdicts for
other debilitating crimes. It is without a doubt that he had made a
destructive move that tarnished his
reputation yet affirmed his stand on
one of the major social issues
of our generation that
sorely needed to be
addressed. One may
vehemently
argue
that the judgment
was downright unreasonable,
as
it is every individual’s right to
express freedom
of speech, but
his discourteous
interruption during a religious
service held at
a place of worship
was fairly unwar-
ranted as well.I believe Celdran should
be penalized; reprimanded, fined and
possibly serve mandatory community
service perhaps, but not to the extent of
serving time for 13 months.
With far more ongoing and pressing
issues at hand such as the colossal
amount of damages on the Tubattahareef, why is everyone so riled up regarding his conviction?
Celdran was a martyr for his
cause. He catapulted a movement that
shed light on an issue which some lawmakers daren’t touch upon because of
the age-old dogmas we had been born
into and raised with. He was a crucial image behind the RH Bill. He had a voice
that echoed the pleas of those women
throughout the country who were suffering from HIV and sexually communicable diseases, of conceiving young girls
who wished that they were equipped
with information that could have steered
them off the path they had treaded and
of mothers suffering from the yoke of an
unending cycle of pregnancy and childbirth.
To his detractors, he is nothing but a
nuisance. To his supporters, he is a man
who changed Manila, just as he said he
would.
He was the man with the bowler hat whowhen all legal forums failed,
sparked controversy in attempt to be
heard. His act stirred an indifferent nation to take a standand take action. With
the RH bill’s approval, and now being
Republic Act 10354, it can be said that
the ‘DAMASO’ stint was not done in vain.
It has achieved its ultimate purpose. Celdran may have lost this battle... but hehas certainly won the war.

Celdran, Without
the Bowler Hat
A
performer, tour guide and
activist, the moment Carlos
Celdran fused his passion
for the arts, history, culture, music and
comedy, and attributed it into his work,
he was unstoppable. His seamlessly executed one-man, multi-venue tours have
become one of Manila’s go-to places
for vacationing tourists (and locals).
Although what made him become (in)
famousfor the past few years is his advocacy for the Reproductive Health Bill.
Clad in a 19th century suit similar to Jose Rizal’s signature ensemble
– bowler hat included -bearing nothing
more than a placard that screamed the
word ‘DAMASO’ in glaring black ink, plus
the courage of a madman, Carlos Celdran stunned the nation last September
30, 2010,by storming the Manila Cathedralduring an ongoing Ecumenical service attended by Manila Mayor Alfredo
Lim, Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, the Papal Nuncio Archbishop Edward Adams along with other
bishops. He managed to shout “Stop

Aneurism of a Student Journalist
those with entertainment qualities.
As student journalists, we are not
paid. Our goal is not to earn money. That
is why I do not see the point of having us
collect for publication fees when having a
running student publication is a requirement for accreditation. The Commission
on Higher Education requires universities
and colleges to have their own student
publications. We cannot and will not commercialize our system simply because the
purpose of student publication is to inform
and enlighten and not to profit.
We cannot deny the fact that
there is pressure for us to meet standards
in journalism that professional journalists
have followed for decades. This daunting
task often intimidates a lot of students from
joining student publications. Many of them
join student publications with the aim of
learning and harnessing their skills. This
is a concern. Our primary responsibility is
to serve students by producing quality articles. Harsh as it may seem but ideally, we
cannot sacrifice principles of journalism
over our own interest of self-improvement.
Some sources have had and still
continue to intimidate us. While others
like Ms. Edna Marizza Santos of HAU
Management and Prof. Elvira David of the
HAUTEU have graciously respected us as
student journalists. They have treated us
with the utmost respect and have allowed
us to interview them even with their busy
schedule. I’ve noticed that when people
have a clear conscience, they are not afraid
to be questioned. Often, they are more than
willing to present their side of the story
while those who have something to hideact
guilty; they would strike and respond aggressively in an effort to rationalize their
mistakes.
In the October 2002 issue of the
Nexus, the editorial expressed that the real
enemy of student publications are political
groups within and outside the HAU in the
community. It notes that publications are
at constant a struggle to identify its friends
from enemies. Back then, the problem was
not directly in administration but also in
political groups, publishing houses and fellow journalists within and outside the publication.
Today is a different story. The
greatest problem the publication is facing
is not directly on issues with the administration and publication fee collection, but
also the apparent apathy and indifference
of students. They know so little of the real
facts and happenings that directly influence
their lives here in HAU.
In a perfect world, students are at
a constant hunger for the truth and publications have the means to satisfy this craving.
But reality is far too cruel. We must remain
vigilant while still safeguarding ourselves
from the possibility of being sacked or
kicked out. We continue to strive in pushing students to ask, to talk and to criticize
what must be criticized.
Perhaps our efforts of moving
from print to digital may reach more students. Perhaps this move will once again
ignite the fire of curiosity and inquisitiveness that eventually leads to movements of
change. We will still continue to print and
issue copies of the Nexus for those who
still share our passion for printed materials. The allure of text printed on paper will
never cease as long as readers hold on to
the bittersweet nostalgia of reading from
paper.
As the saying goes hope comes
from hopelessness. I’m feeling this way
probably because I’m about to reach the
end of my term as the Editor-in-Chief. I’ve
started as a humble staff writer and eventually an editor under Mr. Jay-R Valerio, Ms.
Kerlyn Palo and Ms. Megan David. I’ve
recently reviewed our archives. Seeing old
issues of the paper ignited a passion in me I
though I’ve lost. Perhaps this culture of apathy has affected the publications as well.
But seeing old issues of the Nexus has
given me and my staff a new perspective,
a hope, like bright light from the past that
reminds us that the publication will exist
as long as there are students who share the
passion of serving the community through
journalism.

O
ne morning, I saw my
cousin playing with his
geometry puzzle toy. I saw
him fitting the pentagon shape into
the circle hole. I watched him force
the pentagon shape into the circle
hole then after a couple of minutes,
he finally was able to somehow fit
the piece into the hole. But suddenly, the piece fell and my cousin
called for my help. I told him that he
picked the wrong piece for the hole
and that the circle piece should be
placed on the circle hole and the
pentagon piece should be placed on
the pentagon hole. Then I realized
one thing if you force something to
fit in—sometimes it will somehow
fit but not perfectly and most of the
time it will not.
From then, I just thought an
incident wherein this one teacher was
given a subject to teach which he didn’t
want to teach. For him, the subject was
not his area of expertise. Well, kudos to
him. At least he admits that he can’t be
good teacher in that particular subject. I
guess, instructors have the right to decline an offer if they themselves know
that they cannot teach the subject well
and that they are not comfortable with
the subject.
On the other hand, in the past
semester, I experienced a teacher
wherein the subject that he was teaching was far different from the degree he
a sensitive country filled with easily offended sensitive people can just change
the way they think and live in just a snap.
It will take years to change, it will even
take longer to stay changed, but then
again, we’re in a positive motion right
now. We can use these positive things to
hasten this painstakingly long and slow
progress, a snowball effect of progress
perhaps.
Let’s take these wins and use
them to get even bigger ones. As I’ve said
it’ll take a long time, so there’s really no
point in wasting anymore of it...
On the topic of our school falling apart now, I can only say that knowledge is a very powerful thing, and before
people make their assumptions, opinions
and actions, it’s important that we know
what’s happening and know all the sides
of a story. We, here at The Nexus, will try
to provide all the information about this
situation that we can get. What we hope
though, is before people scream their
murmurs, they should stop and try to see
what’s happening first. If there’s a need
for screaming, I’m sure it will happen. But
right now, what should happen is that the
information should be shared to everyone
affected by this situation, and surely as
students we are one of the ones affected
the most.
It’s kind of hard to learn when your teacher isn’t happy teaching. It’s harder to focus on class discussion if everyone is
has. He was repeatedly mentioning
his degree while we were having our
class with him. He was constantly
telling us that he has a degree in
Economics but he is teaching Arts. I
understand that the subjects belong
to one department but the thing here
is, if the degree of the instructor is in
Economics, then he should teach a
subject related to Economics and I
guess, there is a large line between
the two subjects.
I understand that there is a
lack of instructors in our university. In
fact, one department recently experienced that. But please, do not force
someone to teach a subject which is
not related with his or her degree and
do not let teachers to teach outside
the area of their expertise so that the
“quality” of education students will receive will not be sacrificed.
THE TRAIN GOT OFF THE
RAIL
A teacher must possess high qualifications for the subjects that he teaches. He himself should know that he
knows the subject very well and that
he can teach it very well.
But the case here is, our
teacher was always giving us sermon
before starting our class. Well, it is alright for us to be preached by him if
we ourselves know that we did something wrong. But what’s wrong with
that is, whenever he starts preaching,
he always tells us that Philippines is
not a progressive country because of
our unaligned chairs unlike the other
countries. After we had our subject
with him, we asked his past students
about his way of teaching and they all
said that they also experienced the
same scenario.
With this incident, if there is
something wrong with our teachers,
our student leaders are there to help
us in raising our concern to the proper office that is assigned to help us
with the problem.
talking about a boycott. It’s harder to go
to class when you’re not sure if it’s going
to happen.
Right now, the getting together
of both parties is what’s important, balance should be restored and we have
to get things back to normal. The people
responsible should get together and start
hashing at the details. To find a way, the
two camps should be in a situation where
they both can and are free to do their respective jobs. For the betterment of the
school, things have to go back to normal .
To the students out there, please
be aware. Start reading your college paper. A paper is a much better place to find
the information about what’s happening
in our school than the internet. Facebook
posts are not nearly credible enough to
base your opinion on. It’s not a bad thing
that they’re trying to spread the information. But the credibility of their info is hardly the most credible. So read the paper,
and think. Actions are important but the
decisions behind them are what really
count. Blindly going into action is wrong,
try and see the path before you walk it.
Look at how stable the bridge is before
you cross it, and know that understanding and knowing is more important than
becoming famous on the internet and being in the know first.
This University is on the wrong
side of the road right now, and this publication hopes it steers itself into the right
one before everything becomes too late.

No Summer Classes for
Education Sophomores
Education sophomores following
the BSEd S.Y 2011-2012 curriculum will no longer take their Logic,
PhiGov and Expowr courses this
summer as stated in their curriculum.
The said courses will be distributed
into three consecutive semesters. This
will make Education students, who follow the new curriculum, overloaded for
three consecutive semesters. Dean
Marga Carreon said that before the 1st
semester of this academic year has
ended, many education students especially working students had been asking whether the said summer class will
pursue.
“Kasi definitely, hindi sila makakapagsummer. So if that will be the case,
dadami yung mga irregulars”, the dean
added.
To consider those education students
who cannot afford enrolling for summer
classes, Dr. Carreon, after consulting
the chairpersons of different departments, decided to drop the summer
class.
Following the cancellation of the summer classes for education students,
education sophomores are now currently taking Logic course. Phigov and
Expower courses, on the other hand,
will be taken in the 1st and 2nd semester of 3rd year, respectively.
Dr. Carreon, when asked if the current freshmen will also have the same
change in curriculum, answered, “pag
na-ammend yung curriculum, ‘yun na
rin ang susundin.”
This decision, in general, received both
positive and negative feedbacks from
students.
John Aldria Realm Cruz, a working
second year education student, said
“Mas okay na mag-overload kesa gumastos pa ng summer. ‘Pag summer
kasi, mas maraming babayaran at saka
masyadong rush yung klase sa totoo

lang, pag summer”.
Another working second year education student, Dave Lorenz Suboc, conversely, has mixed feedback regarding
the cancellation of the said summer
class.
“May mga advantages yun. Yung advantage niya, hindi na kami magbabayad ng tuition fee, kasi hindi yun cover
ng scholarship. Yung disadvantage
niya, na-overload tayo. Ang tendency
nun, maraming ginagawa pero konti
ang nalalaman,” he said.
“Well, aside from walang baon sa summer at walang ginagawa, disadvantage
din kasi overloaded tayo ngayon. Super
dami ng ginagawa and instead na nabawasan na yung mga units for 3rd year,
nadagdagan pa. Syempre, yung mga
schoolworks nun, magsasabay-sabay.
Idagdag mo pa yung catechetical instruction and dalawang Field Studies
next sem,” said Recy Mae Aquino, an
education sophomore student.
One student who wants to remain unknown, however, remains very positive
regarding the cancellation of the summer classes. He said, “Okay na wala
tayong summer at least makakapagpahinga, makakapag-prepare tayo for our
third year. Sa tingin ko after this semester, we really need a break. Iwas-gastos
pa ang summer, at least may time para
makapag-save parents natin for our
miscellaneous fee the next sem. Regarding sa pagiging overloaded natin,
syempre, noong una nagulat ako pero
I think, nasa sa atin na yun kung paano
natin ima-manage yung time natin. We
need to be more flexible, siguro.”
The CASEd dean agrees that this decision has advantages and disadvantages but according to her, there are more
advantages than disadvantages. She
also said “Nasa estudyante na rin ‘yun”
on how he will take the extra three unit
load, “kesa naman magbayad pa kayo
ng miscellaneous fee, again, for summer”, she ended.
CASEd Convenes to Cancel
Socialization Night By Charlene Razon
A cancellation of the proposed
CASEd Night 2013 has been made.
The activity was supposed to be
held on January 12, 2013.
The Chairman of the College of
Arts, Sciences and Education Jayson Amcid said, “We respected
whatever the decision of our dean.”
Based from the lineup of activities submitted last November,
CASEd’sSociaization Night was approved by the college’s dean. This,
Amcid explains was under the condition that the event does not interrupt academic schedules.
During one meeting with the President’s Council on the University
Days (U-days), CASEd Socializa-
tion Night was considered to give way
to ease the preparations for the coming U-Days.
There was no communication with
the dean’s office duringthe Christmas
vacation but the College Student
Council (CSC) tried to plan for the
event.
Amcid explains that the dean’s office
was closed throughout the Christmas
break and the only chance they’ve
got to meet the dean was last January 9, 2013. This, Amcid explains is
because of the dean’s tight schedule.
The meeting between the CSC and
CASEd organization heads dealt with
the rescheduling of the University

His works have been put at the National Museum, Malacañang Museum, NCCA Gallery, Development
Bank of the Philippines and the
House of Representatives. The exhibit of his works at HAU will be the
tion possible to conduct on January
19 or January 26.
During the meeting, the dean argued
that holding a CASEd Night would be
redundant. This, she explains is because the Psychology Society and
the Communicator’s League have
already been preparing for their own
respective socialization night.
CSC CASEd Vice Chairman JansellSimbulan said, “As representatives of
theCASEd students, ginagawanaminitoparasakanila, parasa requestnila.
Kasingafor the past 2 or 3 years, wala
pangCASEd Night”.
The primary reason why the CSC
wanted to conduct the CASEd Socialization Night was to shoulder the
expenses of the coming University
Days. Amcid explains that after two or
three years, they think it is about time
to have a socialization night. This, the
CSC CASEd explains is to cater to
CASEd’s growing student population.
Then it was followed by ALE Party list
Representative Catalina Bagasina
and she is proud that she still buys
woodcrafts of Betis, where Juan
Flores came from and had been the
pioneer of wood crafting in his time
in Betis town.
The event was also joined by the
Arculator of the National Museum
in Manila, Nicanor Legazpi, and the
son of the late Juan Flores, Daniel
Flores. The two also did the ribbon
cutting of the said exhibit.
If approved the event would go
alongside the plans of the Psychology Society and the Communicators’ League who, for several year
have been holding Socialization
Nights for their respective members.
The CSC shared that they wanted
to push for this activity to allow
CASEd students from different
courses to mingle.
The CSC have since instead proposed for an Education Night for
Education students and alumni.
This, the CSC explains is to allow
other CASEd students to experience a socialization night.
Amcid, an Education student notes
that the possible Education Night
is still a subject for approval. He explaisn that the CSC is looking forward to having it since Education is
the only course from CASEd who
does not have a socialization night.

Management: Fence is HAU’s
Statement of Preparedness
By Ron Julius Espada and Gallen Maine Bryn Villanueva
Edna Marriza Santos, Chair of the
Management Panel in the Collective
Bargaining Agreement (CBA) talks,
expressed that HAU is preparing for
any eventuality.
This response came amidst tension between HAU management and HAUTEU
over bargaining deadlock in the collective bargaining agreement.
Veronica Pangilinan, HAUTEU’s official
spokesperson, said“We’ve been without
the barricade for a long time, pero bakit
ngayon itinayo? Bakit itinayo ang barricade right after the strike vote?”
Pangilinan concluded that she personally feels that the erection of the barricade
is related to the Union’s strike vote.
Santos emphasized that not all the fences were built in response to HAUTEU’s
strike vote. She clarified that HAU Management do not consider the structures
erected outside HAU as barricades. She
explains that the first fence built on December 8, 2012 was to enclose the area
in front of the main gate.
“There is this place which used to be Funeraria Angelina, which is being cleaned
up. There is this wall with a digital boardalong construction area. So the fence
facing Sto. Rosario is used to enclose
said area when the wall with digital
board will be demolished”, Santos said.
She clarified that the fence built in front of
the main gate was to secure the safety of
construction workers and students. She
notes that she has heard remarks on the
transfer of HAU’s digital board. This, she
explains will require construction in the
area near former Funeraria Angelina and
HAU main gate.
Pangilinan argues “Nag-strike vote kami
ng December 7, 2012 … it was an overwhelming 304 votes vs. 24 votes in favor.
Then in the morning of October 8, 2012
early in the morning, someone texted me
who passed by Holy Angel at nakatayo
na raw yung barricade. Kung ordinary
citizen kang community ng Angeles… at
may makikita kang barricade, ano ang
maiisip mo?”
When asked regarding the other several
fences built around the vicinity of HAU’s
side gate, Santos explained that HAU
management is preparing for “any eventuality”.
“So the point is, it is a statement of preparedness of the institution for any eventuality. Because we may not know, kapag
nag-strike vote ang isang Union, what
does that mean? That any date, after the
strike ban has been filed, the strike may
commence.
… you will see there is written, “University Property” so it is a statement that
the university is stating its property line.”
Santos said.
Santos explains that one of the reasons in building the fences was to guard
HAU’s property and safety of the students, employees and other stakeholders should there be a strike.

Human Rights Film Fest
Awakens People’s Awareness
By Charisel Mae Dela Peña
A Human Rights Film Festival titled
“Truth Cinema” was held last December 7 at AC Library in line with the celebration of Human Rights Day.
The event was sponsored by Kabataan Party List and Tudla Productions.
The event’s aim is to reach out to demoted areas and to show the people
what is happening concerning human
rights cases in the country. The event
was attended by students and some
residents from Barangay Pampang.
“Ora pro nobis” by Lino Brocka, a
political film that transpired after the
Martial law, was presented. The film
is popular for human-rights activists and for those who are against
“Counter-Insurgency” operations. The film was also
banned during
its first release;
nevertheless, it
still got to enter the Cannes
Film Festival.

Students Complain about
Consistently Faulty Elevators
By Charisel Mae Dela Peña
CASEd and CICT students complain
about SJH building’s elevators which
have been in and out of service for
the past few years.
Students whose classes take place on
higher floors noticed this constant dilemma and no one really knows what is really causing the elevator jam. Some are
pointing at the students and of course
the students deny this.
According to a security guard in charge
of patrolling the building, the elevators
have only been going off during black
outs and although the machines had
conked up a couple of times, it only lasted for a short period.
“Nakaka-bother na kasi umaakyat ng
stairs. Bawal pa naman akong mapagod
kasi asthmatic ako baka bigla akong
atakihin ng asthma ko. Tsaka yung instance na na le-late ka na tapos lalo ka
pang male-late dahil sira yung elevator?
And‘ pagpasok mo pawis na pawis kana

Ann Dela Cruz, a first year Psychology
student whose classes take place in the
5th floor.
The customary delay of the elevators
that caught the attention of the students
who use the elevators has caused a set-
back amongthem.Although the students
on lower floors didn’t really bother about
it, some can’t help but to feel sorry for
those affected by the constant elevator
jam.
“Nakakaawa naman kasi nakikita ko sila
everytime I climb the stairs and they
were always in a rush to go up kasi under maintenance yung isang elevator”,
said an education student who refused
to reveal his name.
When faculty member who wished to
remain anonymous was asked about
the problem elevators, the answer was
that it may be due to power failure and
the building consumes more energy as
compared before since the installment
of the projectors.
“In the course of the preventive maintenance check-up of Schindler Elevators,
supplier of the elevator, a computer was
found to be in need ofa replacement.
This part has to be sourced outside
of the country”,explained Engr. Dhon
Dungca who is in charge of the technical
operations around the University.
“To ensure the safety of the users, the
defective elevators have to be kept
closed until the supplier gives it a clearto-operate order.”

NCMB TO SETTLE HAU CBA...
No. 14, Series of 2005, Article V, Section
13, a Certificate of Compliance (COC)
must be signed and submitted to the
CHED testifying that “seventy percent
(70%) of the previous year’s incremental
proceeds from the tuition fee increase
were used for the payment of increase
in salaries, wages, allowances and other
benefits of its teaching and non-teaching
personnel and other staff… twenty percent (20%) of the same was expended
for the improvement of modernization of
school buildings, equipment, and other
costs of operation”.
“The law provides that 70% of the incremental proceeds from tuition fee increases should go to salaries, wages
and benefits of the faculty and other employees, 20% for physical development
and 10% for return of investment.” Pangilinan said.
“Yung 10% bumabalik yun sa school.
Hindi yun kinukuha ng board”, Santos
clarified.
According to Santos, the 10% return of
investment goes back to the university
because it is non-stock nonprofit.
CHEd documents revealed that HAU
raised tuition for school years 20102011, 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. It also
submitted certificates complying with
the 70-20-10 percent proceeds.
In a counter manifestation submitted to
the Nexus, HAU management notes that
during negotiations, former HAUTEU
President, Allan Magat was “satisfied of
the proper computation and allocation
of the 70% (IP).” This, the manifestation
notes is an indication that during Magat’s
leadership of the HAUTEU, both parties
had gone into the final settlement of the
economic issues which would have led
towards acceptance by both parties.
The manifestation notes that acceptance
from both parties did not progress due
to “the termination of Mr. Allan Magat as
President of the Union.”
Pangilinan explained that the Union has
made its own analysis based on available documents and data. She notes
that they thought that something was
wrong. This led them to ask the University Management to do their own computation to compare both parties’ analysis.
“Kung may discrepancy, ipaliwanag nila
(the HAU Management) sa ’min kung
bakit. Since sila naman ang record keeper, hawak nila ang lahat ng data. They
can easily do that. So it is a simple question na parang may kulang yata. Tanong
lang yun na naging duda, yung duda
lumalim pa kasi they refused to do a recomputation”, Pangilinan said.
Santos on the other hand said in an interview that HAU Management is not
avoiding a recomputation but rather its
decline to recompute is based on “the
exercise of [HAU Management’s] prerogative to handle the business operations and processes of the university according to its best judgment and guided
by the prescription of the law.”
She further explained that disclosing
such information is tantamount to removing HAU Management from exercising its prerogative to handle business
operations.
Santos explains that prior to the start of
the academic year (AY) a consultation
was called with former Union officers
with regards to how the 70% IP will be
allocated. She notes that both parties
agreed that 70% will be distributed to
the salaries and benefits of teachers
and employees. She added that during
the consultation, the Union officers were
given the chance to inquire on how the
management arrived at the 70% and
that their inquiries were answered.
“We keep good faith dito, that we give
the 70%. If we go beyond the 70%, dahil ang university nakita nya na may expenses pa rito, expenses pa dun. But we
are true to our educational institution.
Sa kamay namin, yung law ang syang
pinangangalagaan namin. Meron din
kaming prerogative na ‘pag sinabi namin
na eto na yung 70% ninyo, you have to
take it, in good faith”, Santos explained.
When asked on how “in good faith” can
be verified, Santos explained that the
University Management has for decades
followed the same procedure of presenting the computation of the 70% IP to the
union prior to the implementation. She
notes that “management prerogative,
yun yung pinangangalagaan namin. Inside that prerogative, nandun lagi yung
‘in good faith’ natin.’
Santos also explained that HAU Management cannot violate labor principles
on deducting salaries in the case that
a recomputation would indicate that
they’ve extended more than 70% IP.
“Ibibigay namin sa kanila … pero saan
namin yun kukunin?”, Santos said.
She admits that in the case that the recomputation would indicate otherwise,
no violation would be committed if the
management provides the 70% IP to
teachers and employees.
She explains that as an educational
institution, the management has the
responsibility to follow the law. She explains that for several years they’ve followed the same formula and procedure.
She notes that three presidents, former
and current, followed an agreed formula
and procedure on the 70% IP.
Santos explains that HAU Management
is confident that 70% IP is given to employees.
“During the year, meron pa binabayaran
na substitutes, regularization, improvement in ranks, lahat yan. Kung tutuusin
nung mag-compute kami ng para sa
70%, hindi pa yun kasali … although we
set allowances. We’re confident that the
70% talagang binibigay s’ya”, Santos
clarified.
She explains that if HAU Management
commits a specific increase in salary,
they cannot diminish it if there is a decrease in the number of enrollees for the
second semester. This, she explains, is
a clear violation of labor principles which
the management is preventing.
“These are just estimates. Paano kung
bumagsak ang enrollment?”, Santos
said.
Because of the two years added by K to
12 Basic Education Program of the government, there is an expected drop in
the number of college enrollees for two
7
consistent years.
Citing HAUTEU’s actions of filing an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) case, declaration of deadlock, and filing of the notice
of strike, HAU Management states in
their January 14, 2013 Counter Manifestation that, “without a shadow of doubt…
the Union representatives with their current Panel, headed by President Dr. Edmond Maniago, have no intention … to
settle the CBA issues amicably.”
It notes that the University Management
Panel will direct all of its efforts towards
meeting and answering the ULP chargers filed by the HAUTEU against the
university. This, it notes is to vindicate
the University’s position that shall “clearly, transparently and definitely” resolve
all issues raised against the University.
Transparency and Accountability
Pangilinan cited HAU President Dr. Arlyn Sicangco-Villanueva’s advocacy on
Transparency and Accountability.
Pangilinan explains, “The president herself, advocacy niya ay transparency and
accountability. Us in the HAUTEU are
also adapting that. Humihingi kami ng
kwenta dun sa 70% IP. Of course, one
would want to make sure na naiibibigay
nang maayos. Mali ba yun?”
Santos said “Confident kami sa management na yung 70% na iyon ay ibinibigay namin sa employees kasi imagine
kung magba-violate kami, mako-call ang
attention namin.”
3.6 and 5.2 Million
Pangilinan shared that after the management allocates the increase for the salaries, there would still be excess money.
She notes that this excess should go to
employees’ s salary benefits.
“Originally, 3.6 million yun. Pag-uusapan
kung saang benefit idi-distribute yun…
But when we presented yung formula for
the 70% ,medyo nagkahirapan kami because they were saying na yung formula
na ginagamit has been used for a long
time”, Pangilinan said.
She explains that the HAUTEU has
presented an updated version of the
formula used to compute for the 70%
IP. During one of the CBA negotiations,
she explains that the management tried
to use its formula. This, she explains, revealed significant discrepancies.
“Yung formula na yun for the 1st semester, nag-agree sila na actual number of
students times actual number of units
enrolled. Yun pa lang ang ginawa nila,
nag-improve na yung 3.6 million to close
to 5.2 million”, Pangilinan explains.
When asked on the school’s response
to this, she said, “Palagi naman daw
nang-aabono ang school… How will we
know? Ayaw nila mag-recompute.”
Strike Vote
Last December 7, 2012, HAUTEU board
of directors called for a strike vote. Results showed an overwhelming 304
votes vs. 24 votes in favor of a strike.
Pangilinan explains that HAUTEU has
yet formally submitted the strike vote to
the NCMB. This, she explains, is to give
HAU Management a chance to reconsider HAUTEU’s concerns.
“Kung kami ang intension namin ay guluhin ang university strike na kaagad.
Pero dinadaan namin sa dasal”, Pangilinan said.
HAU Management Panel on the other
hand notes in their official Counter
Manifestation notes, “Up to this time, the
Union has not submitted formally to the
Honorable NCMB the strike votes result
that it obtained last December 2012 with
the presence thereat of NCMB representatives – which all proves what Management Panel has manifested before
this Honorable NCMB that the current
Union Panel’s intent is negotiating in bad
faith.”
Santos explains that no matter what explanation HAU Management provides,
HAUTEU still finds it insufficient.
“Ang (decision) namin is to face their
questions and their charges in proper legal fora. Kasi it is that legal fora that will
tell us, ito ang tama at ito ang dapat namit gawin”, Santos explained.
Netizens React
Holy Angel University alumni and students have voiced their concerns and
opinions regarding the recent issues
through online social networking.
HAU Waterproof Students Facebook
page reposted a status expressing that
“[students] should and must be aware.”
It added that “[students’] acads (sic)
must not be affected … teachers are
members of the union, they might not be
able to be in class or worst, they might
not be allowed to enter the school.”
“The admin said, they have contingency
plans about this but I doubt if they can
provide you teachers who are as good
as your current teachers. They even said
that even them (sic) will teach if necessary. You are there to study, to learn, and
to grow as individuals with the service
that the University must cater. But with
what is happening, it’s (sic) NOT conducive to learning anymore”, the post concluded.
It also posted an alleged message from
a former HAU employee who expressed
that “HAUTEU’s courage to contradict
to the admin is very risky. They chose
to take the risk, for their principles and
rights. Hope (sic) students will also have
the courage to voice out what they see”.
This is based on the HAU Waterproof
Students’ Facebook page with around
3600 “likes”.

advice I can give to everyone regarding
the current hiatus bet, the HAU management and the Union: KNOW the real issue first before arriving with conclusions
and making some MOVES. Refrain
from DOING things impulsively”, posted
CSC-CASEd Vice-chairman Jansell Iris
Simbulan on her Facebook account.
The official Facebook page of HAUTEU
has also gathered significant attention
from netizens. It received more than
1000 “likes” in a span of two days since
it was created.
“They are preparing for an explosion of
disastrous proportions. They have taken

Teacher Ed Establishes New
Student Clubs By Rowin de Leon
Teacher Education (TED) UNESCO
Club (HAU Chapter) and Human Kinetics Society are two newly-founded clubs for students enrolled in the
Teacher Education program of HAU.
The recently founded TED UNESCO
Club HAU, after passing all the necessary requirements as UNESCO Club, is
now part of a global grassroots movement that develops understanding and
support for UNESCO and its programs.
This was confirmed when the Teacher
Education program Chairperson, Mr.
Arlan Dela Cruz, received a letter from
National Association of UNESCO Club
in the Philippines, Inc. (NAUCP). The
letter informs the said club’s president,
Zoraida Nacpil, a second year Education Student, that the newly-established
club for Teacher Education students of
HAU is now recognized as an accredited
UNESCO Club.
In line with this, Nacpil is invited to attend
the awarding ceremony in conjunction
with the 2nd national Innovation Conference on Education (NICE 2013) on
January 26-29, 2013, at the Sol y Viento
Mountain Hot springs Resort, Brgy. Pansol, Calamba city, Laguna.
The idea of forming a college-based
UNESCO Club within the Department
of Teacher Education here in HAU came
at a time when peace education started
to be integrated in its teacher education
courses in 2008. Since then, education
students enrolled in HAU receive peace
education lessons in their Social Dimensions of Education course. This follows
the idea that every future teacher is a future peace educator.
This student organization will serve as
an extracurricular training ground for
pre-service teachers to be advocates
of peace education and organize more
peace initiatives. This student organization is open for all teacher education students of HAU.
On the other hand, Human Kinetics Society (HKS), the newly-founded student
organization for MAPEh majors, is now
moving with their various activities headed by their founder-president Joseph
Lobo.
Joseph Lobo said that their club’s foundation is not merely for self-fulfillment but
for the unification of the entire MAPEh
majors in our university.
When asked about their activities, Lobo
answered, “Most of the activities are
tied-up with other organizations, pero
some of the activities kami naman ang
gagawa”.
Recently, HKS had an outreach program
(Laro ng Lahi para sa mga Kabataan
2012) at Brgy. Sapangbato, Angeles
city and they also participated at the
anti-drugs rally of Angeles City Hall. Currently, the said club is still waiting for the
accreditation of their club by the Office
of the Students’ Services and Affairs
(OSSA).
English, Social Studies and Filipino majors have also announced their eagerness to establish organization for their
area of specialization last 1st semester of this academic year. When asked
regarding the current status of their
planned organization, they said that they
are still working on the requirements
needed for the foundation and accreditation of the organization.
The current CSC-Cased Chairman, Jayson Amcid, shows his support to these

The ABPSY Experience
By Gaea Laquindanum
Probably one of the most interesting, exciting, yet challenging classes a psychology
major will consider in his entire life as an
Angelite is Abnormal Psychology(AbPsy).
Nevertheless, upon conquering AbPsy, a
psych major may say triumph is at reach as
there is so much supplement to the learning gained from the field in the end.
How is AbPsy exciting, have you wondered?
Who would not be thrilled to be able to find
out and understand how a disorder starts,
persists, and eventually is given treatment?
What even fuels the excitement is how you
discover the most accurate psychological
disorder through reliable and valid means.
All these await students who take the said
class as one is required to come up with a
comprehensive report that will deal about a
possible case.
Among the Angelites who took up AbPsy
in the last two academic years and those
who have had a taste of what the disorders are—through lectures and the exposure trip, not to mention the cases studied
and formulated with reports—here are
their reports of the most challenging and
brain-teasing psych disorders to determine
among all other disorders.
Dissociative Disorders.
This category of disorders have the main
feature of a defense mechanism called dissociation, an act of separation or disconnection from the self (depersonalization)
or from the reality in the environment (derealization). Such disorders can be brought
about by psychological trauma. A disorder
falling under this category, called the Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a very attention-grabbing one to discover and study,
but the person who experiences it can be
devastated as it may cause significant impairment in a person’s areas of functioning.
In DID, a person may claim various identities that coexist. These identities, adopting
varying behaviors, can be as many as a
hundred, all existing in an individual.
Schizophrenia and
Psychotic Disorders
Perhaps the most common words associated to Psychology is Schizophrenia and
psychotic behavior. What is schizophrenia,
really? Schizophrenia is a complex disorder greatly affecting cognitive and emotional functioning of a person. It comes along
with false, irrational beliefs (delusions) and
sensations that are not brought about by
real external events (hallucination). This
category of disorders is difficult to determine when little information is gathered.
Also, it may be confusing to figure out as
criteria must be taken into account very
well so as not to mismatch them with the
different types.
Personality Disorders
Among the disorders classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, the bible
of Psychology students and practitioners,
personality disorders are probably the
most interesting. It is interesting in a way
that as you go along discussions and lectures about the topics, you find yourself
checking criteria which seem appropriate to you. The terms narcissistic, histrionic, and OC (obsessive-compulsive)
are actually labels of personality disorders. These disorders are challenging
because it must be given emphasis that
such maladaptive behaviors are exhibited in a wide scope of personal and
social context of the individual
because personality disorders
occur in pattern of thoughts
relating to the self and to
others.
No matter how difficult it
may be for Psychology
students to determine a
disorder present in an
individual, with proper
training and more intense exposure and
much attention to the
subject, every diagnosis
can be as accurate and comprehensive as
it can be. Judging and labeling disorders to
people is unethical and must
always be avoided. In
cases that it brings
doubt and confusion, the perfect
thing to always do
is to know what
the experts have
to say for they
are the authorities to
be considered in the
field.

Catechetical Instruction to be
Moved Next Semester
By Rowin de Leon
Due to Education Sophomores’ morning
schedules, Mr. Arlan dela Cruz, TeacherEd Chairperson, decided to move their
Catechetical Instruction program from
this semester to the next.
“That was the only reason for such decision of not to allow second year students
to have their catechetical instruction”,
dela Cruz added.
He also clarified that “the ten-hour training consumed by the second year students during the one-day training shall
be credited.”
When asked if there will be refresher
trainings on catechetical instruction next
semester before student catechists are
deployed, he answered, “Definitely there
will be a day of re-orientation of the catechetical ministry for next school year.”
To disseminate the news regarding the
said discontinuation of catechetical instruction, dela Cruz asked the help of
the class beadles from his Esocdimed
classes earlier this semester. Consequently, mixed reactions were gained
from the students regarding the said announcement.
When asked about what he can tell the
supposed-to-be catechists regarding
their reaction on the cancellation of the
said program this semester, he said that
he has no comment on this as his office
has not received any complaints, formal
or informal, regarding the discontinuation of the said program.
One involved student who wished to remain unknown said, “It’s a bit upsetting
for me that the catechetical instruction
had been postponed because we should

HAU Psych Tops 4th in PAPJA...
Calma explained that the actual team
who competed comprised of Laquindanum, de Leon and Pineda. Pineda and
de Leon were selected because of their
prior exposure to the PAPJA quiz bee.
Calma notes that Pineda and de Leon’s
standing as seniors also gave them an
advantage.
Laquindanum on the other hand was selected over Cruz because of her higher
grade point average (GPA).
“They are five in the team pero dapat
isa lang ang backup pero dahil we want
to prepare for the worse kaya meron pa
ring dalawang backup”, Calma said.
HAU’s psychology academic team members were provided with PowerPoint presentations on psychological concepts.
These presentations included several
questions to be answered by the team.
One PowerPoint presentation consisted
of 400 items. De Leon and Indiongco
shared that the team met once a week
and were constantly given 400 to 500
item exams. These exams include topics
from General Psychology to Psychological Measurements.
“It was mind boggling, it was mind stressing… It was a good thing that every time
we had our review we had food with us.
We were instructed to bring sweets as
well”, De Leon explained.
De Leon and Indiongco recall that the
team underwent hypnotherapy as one
of their preparations for the competition.
Hypnosis sessions were provided and
facilitated by Daryl Malonzo.
“We had longer preparations this year”,
De Leon mentioned.
De Leon was exposed to last year’s
PAPJA quiz bee where she served as a
substitute. She explains that there is little
pressure to maintain or exceed HAU’s
7th place record last PAPJA 2012.
“I did not think that getting into the top
ten would be as promising as before…
For us, getting into the top ten was already enough”, said de Leon.
Around 11:30, participants were called
for registration. By 12:45pm, all 143 participating schools together with each of
their three members were distributed
to take individual tests. After taking the
prequalifying test, scores were tallied
according to school. The top ten highest
scoring schools then moved to the next
round.
The top ten schools were announced
after that convention’s afternoon plenary session. The schools were called
in no specific order. Holy Angel University secured its spot in the top ten together with Far Eastern University, University of Santo Tomas, Centro Escolar
College,Saint Louis University Baguio,
University of the Philippines Tacloban,
De la Salle University and Ateneo de
Manila University.
“Holy Angel University and Saint Louis
University Baguio yata are the only
two schools na nakapasok sa top ten
from Northern Luzon … Angeles University Foundation, UP Clark and the
University of the Assumption did not
participate”,Calma said.
“Nagnenerbyos ako syempre. Then the
quiz master said ‘from Pampanga…’.
Tayolangnamanang from Pampanga. I
was so happy”,Calma explicated.
The top ten schools then took their respective places in the stage for the actual quiz bee. HAU was able to successfully answer the first few questions but
lagged later on in the competition. Five
points were deducted for having no and
wrong answers. Each correct answer
was equivalent to ten points. Twenty
questions were presented. The questions came from, General Psychology,
Experimental Psychology, Theories of
Personality, Abnormal Psychology, Psychological Testing and Industrial Organizational (IO)Psychology.
Calma notes that majority of the questions came from Industrial Organizational Psychology.
“The questions were really difficult, hardcore talaga sila. Hindi natin nakuha yung

our present schedules which have long

they could join next year. I just feel that
there’s a lot of time that we could have
spent productively. It should have been a
big minus on our commitments.”
“May mga disadvantages yan, meron din
namang mga advantages. Bago naman
siguro ikinansela ito ni Sir (Arlan Dela
Cruz), pinag-aralan niya muna”, Karen
Lazaro commented.
Despite the cancellation of the catechetical instruction program this semester,
the Junior Education students will pursue theirs and they are currently having
it at Angeles Elementary School and
Sta. Teresita Elementary School.
Furthermore, Mr. dela Cruz commends
the group leaders of the said catechetical instruction for working and walking
closely with him to successfully accom-

“After the 15th question, nahinaan na
ako ng loob. Hindi na yata tayo makakapasok. I told Daryl (Malonzo) nakahit
mag-top 6 lang tayo okay na. This is because I want to exceed our last year’s
PAPJA record of 7th place. Surprisingly,
Daryl told me na nakakapasok pa raw
tayo”, Calma said.
When the scores were tallied, HAU
was revealed to be on the 3rd spot together with UP Tacloban and De la Salle
University. A tie-breaker-question was
called and all three schools were able to
answer correctly. For the 2nd tie-breaker-question, none answered correctly.
It was the third tie-breaker-question
which made the fate of De la Salle, HAU
and UP Tacloban, putting them on the
3rd and 4th spot.
“Nung sinabing top 3 at magta-tie-breaker pa, umaalis na kaming tatlo. Sabi namin, ‘ayaw na namin, sige sa inyo yan.
’Masakit na kasi sa ulo. Tumayo na talaga kami, pero andun na sayang naman”,
Pineda exclaimed.
When the answers were revealed, only
UP Tacloban got the correct answer,

la Salle shared the 4th spot. University of
Santo Tomas secured the top spot next
to Far Eastern University.
plish their goals for their group members
and their pupils. He also shows his gratitude and appreciation to the Campus
Ministry Office, to Ms. Lorna Tyson and
Ms. Ria Ignacio of the Christian Living
Department as well as Motorpool for
the implementation of this program and
the two partners in DEPEd headed by
its two principals: Dr. Agnes Manabat
of Angeles Elementary School and Mrs.
Edna Tongol of Sta. Teresita Elementary
School.
Catechetical instruction is a compulsory
activity for all teacher education students. This consists of receiving training
and providing catechetical instruction
among grade school children in public
schools around Angeles City.
“Definitely, participating in this ministry
is not an easy task. But I would like all
teacher Education students to take this
as a challenge as a pre-service teacher.
This program is a big stepping stone towards becoming the kind of educators I
dream them to be in the 21st century”,
said Dela Cruz.
Teachers and students from different
schools were seen congratulating team
HAU after the event.
“Nakaka-proud lang na nakikilala tayo”,
Pineda said.
“We saw it as a learning experience; we
really didn’t pressure ourselves to win.
Hindi namin inisip na dapat mapunta
kami sa top. We experienced this, we
became a part of it, that is good enough
for us”, explained de Leon.
When asked regarding the secret of possibly getting the top spot next year, de
Leon said, “It is more of the dedication
to learn and not to win. It was more of
learning by the heart … reviewing by the
heart”.
Plans for Next Year
Calma explained that he is coordinating
with Mr. Carlos Buan, the official coach
of HAU’s psychology academic team.
“I’ve told them about the ‘halimaw’ thing
of UST. The secret of UST is one year
ang kanilang preparations”, Calma mentioned.
He notes that Buan has already instructed him to scout for possible new
academic team members for the next
convention.
“Among the 20 questions, they (UST)
only got one wrong question yata. Halimaw talaga sila”, Calma mentioned.
Dark Horse of the Competition
“I think they(young psychology majors)
can make it. Kasi if we were able to get
into the top ten, kaya rinnila”, Pineda
said.
HAU was labeled as the “dark horse of
the competition” because it was able to
penetrate into the top 5. The top 10 of the
PAPJA quiz bee has traditionally been
dominated by popular schools such as
UST, Ateneo and De la Salle.
He explains that he heard rumors that
the juniors, sophomores and even freshmen Psychology majors are showing
great promise academically.
“People were asking, ‘What is Holy Angel? Where did they come from? Who
are these people?’ Well, tayolangkasiangkakaibasalahatngmga schools nanagsi-salisa PAPJA … kamuntikna raw natingmaabutanangLa Salle”, said Calma.
More than 4,300 students attended this
year’s PAPJA Convention. This is the
biggest PAPJA since its first convention. The event was held at the SM Mall
of Asia last January 18 and 19, 2013.
“We will not limit it to five. This time,
we’re going to prepare ten participants”,
Calma mentioned.
He explains that the new screening system will follow a process of elimination.
He adds that the review will also be in
preparation for the psychology board exams.
“Possible kasi na yung mga magtetrain might be part of the topnotchers
sa board exams ng psychology,” Calma
predicted.

Management: Fence
is HAU’s...
“Merong ii-impose na strike ban, which
is 7 days, and then we expect a strike
any day from that after the 7th day. When
asked for HAUTEU’s reaction, Pangilinan said, “May nag sabi sa amin na
they (HAU Management) are preparing
na raw for the strike. So kung in the event
of a strike daw maliit lang yung space
naiwan sa amin so pupuntahan na lang
yung mismong street. Eh ‘di itinaboy kaming Angeles City Traffic Enforcement
Group (ACTEG).”
Santos explains that the university is not
just preparing for a strike.
“It may not only be the strike, it may be
another. I don’t know what can happen,
pero if you will look at signage, ‘University Property, Post No Bill’. It is the property of the school, and since it is the
property of the school, sine-secure natin
ito”, Santos explained.
When asked if HAU management foresees danger or threat to the school, Santos said that they do not see any sudden
threat at this point.
Satos further noted “They’re (HAUTEU)
connecting this to the strike vote, syempre the institution has to be prepared, syempre, aantayin mo pa ba na mangyari

Pangilinan said, “Noong pinag-uusapan namin ang retrenchment policies
muntik na kaming magka-deadlock
noon. There is a law that protects an
employee, yung security of tenure”.
In a letter submitted to the Nexus,
HAUTEU explained that one of their
main demands or issues was that
“security of tenure be upheld in the
University Retrenchment program.
In the Management’s proposal, the
provision of last in first out (LIFO)
was replaced by work performance
which can be subjective and may
contravene Seniority rights”.
Santos clarified that LIFO was not
going to be replaced by work performance. She further explained that
work performance was simply going to be included as a criterion for
retrenchment. She explained “educational qualifications, performance,
last in first out,ang performance is
just one among the criteria. In-explain ko rin ito sa Union”.
Panglinan on the other hand expressed that their concern is that
performance was placed as a primary criteria for retrenchment.
“There is performance evaluation sa
regularization process. Once regularized ka it means na-provide monaang performance nakailangan.
Performance evaluations should be
included in regularization and not as
a primary criterion in retrenchment. It
should assist the students... there is an
hour na sabay-sabay lalabas yan, kaya
yung guards, they see to it na nandoon
sila, and their alertness to assist the kids
… lahat yan sine-secure ng school.”

Cased Students Give Their Take
Safety of Students
“I think the admin is just protecting the
school’s properties and the people inside it”, Ms. CASEd Ashley Singh commented.
Should there be a strike Santos notes
that the fence will help in safeguarding
students and employees.
“Yung passage ng mga bata could be
also another thing that we have to secure. Not only the students, but also the
employees”, Santos said.
On the other hand, Pangilinan explains
that HAUTEU also puts into consideration the safety of the students.
“Kasi may specific time na lumalabas
ang mga bata, so kung heavy load ang
traffic ng pedestrian coming out of the
school, syempre kung maliit na lang
ang [passage way]. Mag-i-spill over sila
sa road mismo na dinadaanan ng mga
vehicles. How can that be now for the
safety of the students?”
“Personally hindi ko makita yung security reasons … it is posing a risk pa nakasi lumiit na yung dadaanan”,Panglinan
added.
In response, Santos said “Even when
the fence was installed, the guards
were given the instructions on how they

may become a venue for abuse.” She
explains.
A Case from the former College of
Nursing
Santos gave an example by citing an
exchange when several instructors
from the former College of Nursing
(CON) were retrenched.
“Nag-retrench natayo last summer
kasi lumiit na yung enrollment natin.
Nagkaroon kami ng meeting with the
Union officers. There was one faculty
member who joined us in the meeting
… kasi before we do any retrenchment
we inform the Union na dahil lumiitang
enrollment natin may mare-retrench
na faculty.”
Mr. CASEd Jastin Pangilinan also
shared his opinion. He explained, “ I am
not against the HAU’s action of putting
fences or barricades”.
He further added, “I think those fences
will just add another expense for the
school … maybe another expense from
the students.”
Jansell Simbulan, CSC Vice-Chairman
explained that a lot of students were
caught off guard when the fences were
erected.
“Especially I think itinayo sya the day after na mag-strike vote”, she observed.
She commented that students got a notion that there is indeed an impending
rally because of the fences.
“Nakakalungkot lang din kasi laging naging controversial ang issue between the
Union and the management dun sa pagpapatayo [ng fence]”,Simbulan said.
Simbulan also echoed the concerns of
retrenchment to address this concern.
“Since nagka-performance incentives
ang mga employees, talagang na
kita namin na nag-improve ang aming

that they are aware that they cannot simply request for the removal of the fence.

said.
When asked for his opinion,CASEd student council Chairman Jason Amcid
said, “Those barricades seem to protect the students, right? But they (HAU
Management) are really not helping students from passing by. [The passageway] became too narrow for us to walk
over especially by 9 pm. Most of the
students are protesting about it. Also it
becomes a total eyesore when you look
at it. I hope they will remove it as soon as
possible”,Amcid added.
“I think tama lang yun. Of course you
would want to secure your career.
Kapag matagal ka na sa pinagtatrabahuhan mo hindi ka naman matutuwa kung maunaka pang matatanggal kesa sa mga recently hired”,
expressed a 3rd year Education
student who also wished to remain
anonymous.
Retrenchment occurs when there
is an economic ground to reduce
number of employees. In the case of
HAU, this may occur when there is a
significant decrease in the number of
enrollees. Because of the two years
added by K to 12 Basic Education
Program of the government, there is
an expected drop in the number of
college enrollees for two years.

“Students Must Not Be Involved”
By Aaron Rivera
Despite tensions between HAU Management and HAUTEU due to the labor issue, the management and the
Union stated that students must not
involve themselves in the issue.
“Regular classes will still remain. There
will be no extension of academic calendar.” Edna Marizza Santos, assistant
of the HAU President and Chair of the
Management Panel in the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) talks said.
She explains that is still HAU Management’s duty to provide quality education
and services to the students. She notes
that in case that there will be “abnormalities”, it is their responsibility to take care
of the students.
“It is not their (students) concern”,said
Santos pertaining to the issue between
the Management and the HAUTEU.

Ano ang layunin sa nasabing

kinalaman sa paksang gramatika at retorika sa asignaturang nabanggit. Ang retorika
ay hindi lamang nakatuon sa kasiningan

sa kalinawan at katiyakan ng pahayag. At
isa sa mga sangkap upang matamo ang
kalinawan sa pahayag lalo na kung ito ay

Ang maling paggamit ng bantas
ay nagdudulot ng kamalian sa mensaheng

Learning Beyond the Four Walls
of the Classroom By Rommel C. Combis
It has been accepted that the teachinglearning process is not just confined in the
four walls of a classroom. In fact, several
alternative learning modes have been utilized by the Social Sciences department of
HAU and one of which is the Outbound Educational Programs (OEPs) held every semester on almost all programs. OEPs aim
to expose the students enrolled in Social
Science subjects in experiential learning.
The department has adopted this method
since the OEP also gains the participation
of world-class artists and renowned personalities as guest lecturers/speakers.
The clamor to have OEPs this 1st semester of the current school year comes from
both faculty members as well as students.
Unfortunately, several factors have made it
difficult for the Social Science department
to execute these trips. For one, the department, as a whole, thought that with the
recent onslaught of weather disturbances
and their unwanted consequences, parents of some students may need their finances to answer more pressing needs.
Although, prior arrangements with the tour
provider have already been made, the
economic, emotional and psychological
impact of these calamities must be considered.
The social science department believes
that out of school activities require much
preparation to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the participants, and to see to it
that learning is achieved. Everything must
not be taken lightly. Hence, faculty handling Rizal, Sociology, History and Government were required to submit the accomplished form as a way of monitoring and
of evaluating any outbound educational
activity.
For the past five consecutive semesters
of holding the OEP, feedback coming from
the participants had been very encouraging. That is so because the department
had always assured that the OEP at-
tained its aims and objectives in spite of
some factors that had, somehow, tried to
hamper the smooth conduct of the activity. The other key factor that contributed
to the success of the OEPs is the professional handling facilitated by the partners
of the department. These are the service
providers from within and outside HAU.
Before forging a partnership with a service
provider, the Social Sciences department
sees to it that transparency and proper discretion (delicadeza) is upheld in order to
protect not just the interest of the university
but also of the participants. That is why, in
the occurrence of any untoward incidents,
the department does not hesitate to cancel
or amend any arrangement made with the
service provider.
Some of the significant outcomes of the
past OEPs are:
1. Lecture–forum with Lolo Peping, the oldest among the direct descendants of Dr.
Jose P. Rizal at the less famous but equally
historically significant residence of Paciano Rizal
2. forum-discussion with Dr. Jose Abueva
and Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, both national
artists’ awardees
3. forum-discussion with the Senate Director and Senators separate from the attendance in the Senate plenary sessions, and
4. forum with Malacanang historians and
political analyst.
Hence, the OEPs contribute to the personal knowledge on how the participants
may view life through their first-hand EXPERIENCE with the PEOPLE, EVENTS
AND PLACES which they only see and
read in books and heard in the news. While
momentarily halted this semester, the department assures that OEP will continue
to complement the learning processes as
vowed by social sciences faculty. Only, it
must be done with the right participants at
the proper time and at the right place to ensure that OEP is truly educational.

Time with
the Angelites
“W
e prepare you for
life”—the
famous
slogan of Holy Angel
University.
There is no doubt that HAU
indeed prepares its students in championing the ideals of the modern day
society the moment they step out of
the campus grounds, but I believe that
dear HAU has not listened to the way
its students talk lately.
“However, we also have students who are having a hard time in
expressing themselves not only in
speaking, but in writing as well.” This
statement struck me during my interview with the English coordinator Ms.
Leslie Manalo and what’s more striking
is that, a lot of people share the same
sentiment.
I started noticing this dilemma
since – let me think – oh yes, the first
day of classes during my first year in
this university. I find it funny that some
professors seem to join students in this
predicament.
An English instructor told me
that most Angelites are having difficulty in accomplishing not so complex
activities like constructing simple sen-
tences. After being asked about his/
her comment on the English proficiency of HAU students, the professor straightly stated, “They’re not proficient”. Now, this is very bothering.
The same professor told me a story
that some visiting entrepreneurs
commended the hard work, and patience of the university’s graduates.
However, they are very dismayed in
their English speaking skills.
I started asking some Angelites about their personal opinion
on the English proficiency of their
schoolmates:
“It’s ok ‘coz we hear some Angelites
host, some write, and I think they’re
good naman in using the language.
Actually, di naman natin talaga
mape-perfect always, kaya, I think we
have a satisfactory English skill”, said
a student from CASEd.
“So low…I think that the
English proficiency of Angelites is
very low because we all see and we
all hear how Angelites express themselves in English”. This is according
to a student from CBA.
Another student from CASEd
said “Feeling ko nasa course naman
‘yan eh. If your course, kunware ikaw
ComArts ka, requires you to be good
in English, then be good in English, di
ba?”
“I think, in general, Angelites are still
struggling to be English proficient,
but we should consider the fact that
we have good students who use the
language well”, a student from CHM
explained.
Seriously, incompetence in
writing, speaking and reading English is more of an epidemia in Holy
Angel. Ms. Leslie mentioned that it
is not only in Holy Angel University
selves most of the time with the album title “me myself and I”. That’s not
the worst part. Each photo is identical
with every single photo in the album
or maybe with different angles but is
pretty much the same pout and forehead knot. Familiar, right? Another
aggravating thing that would make
you leave your news feed is sharing
this certain post telling you that you
just won this cash Oprah Winfrey
has and that you won an iPhone. You
know what those are, and so are the
other five hundred millions of people
in the world. Also, when this certain
song came out and everybody is
practically singing it through his/her
keyboard and Facebook statuses.
Aside from those are the pictures
where you are tagged in but you’re
not even there and those posts on
your wall telling you to post them to
other people’s profile otherwise you’ll
get hit by a truck full of kittens in an
hour.
I for once believe that these
are just few of the thousand things
that we shouldn’t be really doing on
social networking sites. There are really good posts that are worthy to be
shared but there are also these things
that don’t really fit the social networking scene. We should post what we
think is appropriate and sometimes
it’s for the better if we don’t post personal information because many had
become victims of different crimes
because of the convenience given
by the internet. A lot of times, they
can track missing persons through
their Facebook accounts but their
accounts can also be used by delinquents to track down who they
want to track. Teens and children
have been victimized by saying that
they are ‘Home Alone’ on their statuses. Putting ‘Single’ as your new
relationship status can make you
an item for stalking. Adding people
you don’t know is an error considering that they will get to know you
more and you don’t even know
what their motives are. So, we must
all maintain a certain degree of secrecy, facelessness and inconspicuousness.
Social Networking is a
great idea. But then again, it has
been a too good idea for a lot. The
internet is not a deemed reliable
source. Paolo Coelho once said
“People are very reluctant to talk
about their private lives but then
you go to the internet and they’re
much more open.” It’s just a veracity that most of us probably don’t
notice that much. It’s true that the
internet has been both a blessing
and a curse. So let’s make it all a
blessing and learn to use it prudently. The internet has things you
never thought would have existed.
It can make anything happen with
its immensity and extent. It’s a big
box of anything, so anything can
happen.
that we experience this dilemma. She
stated that other colleges are suffering
from the No-good-English virus. The
coordinator blames the loss of interest in reading of our generation. Well,
I have to agree with her on that point.
Reading must be a ‘hobby’ and not an
occasion for you to celebrate only once
in a blue moon or an opportunity that
gives you the bragging rights because
you are the only one who shows off
that you could actually read.
The world today is filled with
preoccupations and stuff that the
youths lack the ability and
support to truly develop
their totality during
their
formative
years. But let us
keep in mind
that this is not
a trend that
could be made
exc u s a b l e
because
ever yone
does
it.
This institution must be
aware that outside its gates,
is a world of
competition,
where those
who are well
prepared in
every
aspect are the
top predators.
Of course, we
cannot lay all the
blame to our dear
university; we have
a lot of factors to
consider. Still, it is in
this university where we are supposed
to be “prepared for life”. I hope, in the
near future, students and the school
would work hand in hand to finally end
this intolerable disease.
And for all the students, let us
not settle in the mediocre English skills
we have. If it is in communication we
are weak, then it is in communication
that we must work. Let us be partners
with the school in preparing ourselves
f o r
the bigger stage. It is in ‘I’
where change begins.

Where’d all the
good people go?
H
ow do you answer quite
a cynical question like
that? It appears as
though this oblate spheroid planet
has run out of people with good,
big hearts of gold. Where could
they have gone? Or are they to ap-
pear only on certain times of the
year—Christmas, International
Day of Peace, election period,
etc.—when goodness of heart
seems expected and necessary?
How do we define what good
is? What is goodness? Perhaps the
most common definition we may have
for goodness is a kindly feeling, and a
sense of generosity; an act of doing
the right thing, with pure intentions,
of helping others. But could it be that
good people appear only in certain situations? It is disheartening, yes. However, it seems true in the present time.
Worse, they initially do a good deed in
expectation that something in their favor must be returned. Is that how one
is defined a good person?

Lumalanding Kabataan, Sino ang
may Kasalanan?
P

palda. Pasikip nang pasikip
ang mga damit. Mas maaga
ang mga edad na nagkakaroon na ng
mga boyfriend o mga girlfriend. ‘Di kaya
mas maaga nang “lumalandi” ang mga
kabataan ngayon?
billboard! Konti na lang lumabas din
yung mga kaluluwa nila”, sabi naman ni
Maria Rosal, isang nanay.
Pero maliban sa mga katanginang
nakikita ng mga mata natin sa arawaraw, may mga pagtutunay rin naman
ito ayon sa mga pag-aaral ng mga
istatistika. Ayon sa Young Adult Fertility
Study ng UP Population Institute and
the Demographic Research and Development Foundation o UPPI – DRDF,
noong 2002, mahigit sa 23% ng mga
kabataan 15 to 24 years old ay nakaranas na ng pre-marital sex. Ayon din sa
kanilang pag-aaral, mas naging liberal
na rin ang paningin ng mga kabataan
tungkol sa sex.
Ayon din sa pag-aaral nila, mahigit sa
40% ang nagsasabi na ayos lang ang
pre-marital sex para sa
mga lalaki, at 22% naman
para sa mga babae. Ayon
din sa kanilang survey, 79%
ng mga first-time sexual intercourse ay walang gamit na proteksyon, gaya ng condoms. Mahigit-kumulang 162,000 o 10%
ng mga nanganganak ay mga
teenage moms na produkto ng
pre-marital sex, 15 to 24 years
old.
“Eh syempre, umiibig eh, wala
isang single mom at part-time service
crew sa isang fastfood chain.
At eto pa ang malala. Sa 400,000 abortions na nangyayari taon-taon, 36% ay
mga teenagers. Ayos, ‘di ba? Only in
the Philippines!
“Kung sino man ang gumagawa ng
mga laglag-laglag na yan eh mga sira
ang mga magulang nila”, sabi ni Roel
Robles, isang pulis.
Pero sa mga bagay na ganito, sino nga
ba ang dapat sisihin? Mga malalaswang DVD? Mga nababasa nating
malaswa sa mga front page ng mga
tabloid? Mga napapanood sa TV? Peer
pressure nga ba? Mga malalaswang
websites na madaling puntahan?
“Eh ganyan talaga sa Pilipinas, it’s a
free country. You can do what you want.
Kaya puro porn din yung Cellphone ko
eh. ‘Wag kang maingay ah”, sabi ng isa
kong kaibigan na ayaw ding magpakilala.
Pero, may mga magagawa nga ba ang
mga magulang?
“’Di ko alam eh. Madalas kasi parang
natatakot na yung mga magulang sa
mga anak nila. Kahit ayaw namin eh
wala naman din kaming magagawa.
Nasa kanila pa rin naman yung desisyon kung gagawa sila ng kalokohan o
hindi”, sabi ng isang inang ayaw magpakilala.
Ano? Sila pa ang natatakot? Depende
yan sa magulang. Kaunting diskarte
lang naman nila yan eh. Pwede na-

of time because of their remarkable
actions.
Their deeds are not just for us
to recognize and be proud of. Through
their genuine acts of goodness, we
are encouraged, invited, and—I think
the best word to use is—challenged to
emulate them. No, you are wrong if you
think that what this means is to live like
martyrs and make miracles like they
did. I believe you understand that this
is not the sole basis of being good.
I have always believed that
even in simple ways, we can start living good lives, for ourselves and ultimately, of course, for others. That is
how the drill is. Even if we start in tiny
things, it is important that our end is to
eventually create a huge impact. Yes, I
have always been a fan of progressive
change. This time, I mean it for each
one of the members of this community.
Before the flames keep burning, it is
vital that something ignites within us at
least.
Why wait for situations that
may call for goodness when even in
your day to day lives you can try to be a
blessing? How about if we strive to be
good people now, and in the long run
become better and better? Through
that, no one will even have to bother
ask, “Where’d all the good people go?”
because the answer is that they have
always been everywhere.
mang mag set ng curfew. Pag lumampas sila, grounded for some valid reasons naman yun. Kung may computer
set sila, pwede namang i-set sa High
ang web protection level ng paggamit
ng internet, o maglagay ng web page
blocker o key logger para namo-monitor nila yung mga ginagawa nila.
Pero may naalala lang akong joke sa internet. Ang sabi, “Who needs a meaningful relationship when you have a wifi connection?”
program presentation nila—ang “Created by love, Created to love” at “A life
without love”.
ano man yun, ‘yun na ‘yon.
relasyon. Makikita natin na marami ang
naka-relate sa nangyaring discussion
tungkol sa bagay na ito. At may sudden realization pa yung iba nating mga
mag-aaral.
at nais mong maging malaya, di man
sila payag, walang magagawa”. Kung
titignan natin sa lyrics, “Malaki ka na”,
ang ibig sabihin ay alam mo na dapat
ang tama at mali, kung ano ang dapat
gawin at hindi dapat. Hindi man sila
kung saan man tayo dalhin?
In the long run nga, tayo pa rin talaga
ang may kasalanan. Ang kabataan, hahanap at hahanap talaga ng mga lusot
o mga paraan ‘pag di nila mapigilan
yung mga bagay na hindi naman talaga nila dapat na ginagawa. Masyado
na tayong sumasabay sa bilis ng takbo
ng teknolohiya at gusto natin na mas
mabilis pa tayo sa wi-fi connection ng
kapitbahay natin ‘pag gusto nating
