Wallingford Parks & Recreation FALL 2014 - Guide to Leisure & Fun! www.town.wallingford.ct.us &(203) 294-2120 MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR: JOHN GAWLAK, CPRP As the summer comes to a close and we look ahead to the fall, our program calendar is full of program opportunities waiting for you and your family to discover and enjoy!! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome resident Michael Jagoda as he was appointed by Mayor William Dickenson Jr. to fill the vacant seat on the Parks & Recreation Commission left by Rosalind Gallagher. Roz served the Parks & Recreation Commission for over 12 years. We are grateful for her volunteering efforts, service and value she brought to the commission. The Recreation Department says goodbye to two long time staff members Jim Sayre Facilities Coordinator and Joanne Vass both who will move to retirement after many dedicated years of service. Both will be deeply missed as coworkers and friends. Personally, speaking Joanne’s presence leading the front office and her service with the general public was consistently outstanding. I wish them both happy days beyond their days with the Recreation Department. I would also like to give a warm welcome to Joanne’s replacement resident Shirley Barillaro. Shirley will assume the role of Senior Clerk at the Recreation Department. The Recreation Department and Commission have been extremely busy working along side the Engineering Department Engineers John Thompson and Rob Baltrametis, Department of Public Works General Foreman Steve Palermo and Kurt Trieber Jr., Risk Manager to bring to the residents many park projects. I appreciate the genuine collaboration over the last few years. 1. Vets Park Parking Operational and Safety Enhancement Project will commence this September with a tentative completion in October. 2. The Legacy Gardens at Wallace Park work has begun fencing, benches, irrigation, and brick walk way complete. The Wallingford Garden Club will be designing and planting the gardens early September. 3. The Dog Park off of Quinnipiac St has been cleared for the Wallingford Dog Lovers Association to begin maintaining the site and fundraising is now in full swing to purchase fencing and other park amenities the group has proposed to include at the site. Public Works in the coming months will be repaving and striping the parking area. 4. Our building here at 6 Fairfield Blvd. will be receiving in late August all new concrete sidewalks, curbing and patios. A long awaited repair. 5. We all are working on Westside Eagles Memorial Park Improvements to the baseball/football field slated to begin September 2015. 6. The Kendrick Park Project including Meghan’s Walk will be finally taking shape this September after a year of planning with a memorial walk way installation, new basketball court pad and goals, new playground apparatus for ages 5 and under with fall zone and border installation protection and pergola. In addition, Jason Michaels and disc golf gang completed the back nine holes to make a complete 18 hole course for the FLYING ACE Frisbee disc golf course located at Lufbery Park off of Cheshire Rd. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the South West Conservation District and Roman Mrozinski for the installation of Kayak/Canoe Ramps at Community Lake and Fireworks Island. The project was funded by the Greater New Haven Community Foundation and designed by Mike Rosado USDA, NRCS and constructed by Hazelwood Excavating. Finally, I hope your visits to the David Doherty Center have been positive experiences. Our staff works hard in providing you with quality programming. Our office is always open for suggestions and ideas. CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide. It is also being implemented in nursing homes, pre-schools and physical therapy…..if you fit somewhere in between it can probably help you. Our program delivers a fitness by design, broad, general and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and on average, NEW! punish the specialist. The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs. The need of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind. Our soldiers, skiers, mountain bike riders and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen. – Courtesy of CrossFit Inc. 5078.400 Getting Started – CrossFit On Ramp Ages 18+ The On-Ramp program is required for ALL new clients prior to entering regular classes.
