Getting Wet
It’s difficult to imagine a destination that offers divers, snorkellers and those who simply
love the water, more to see and do than the Cayman Islands. Below the tranquil, azure
waters that line Grand Cayman and her two sister islands, Little Cayman and Cayman
Brac, a world of magic awaits. For divers, it’s the opportunity to experience first-hand
the legendary walls, reefs and wrecks that have made our islands famous the world
over. For snorkellers and swimmers, the chance to mingle with Stingrays, turtles, tropical
fish and corals in every colour of the rainbow.
Guests enjoy all this in bathtub-like temperatures (79 to 83-degrees) with a visibility
that often exceeds 100 feet. With an abundance of experienced, highly professional
dive operators, state-of-the-art live aboards and numerous snorkel sites accessible by
boat or straight from shore, the Cayman Islands is the ideal setting in which to explore
the underwater realm. Even children can get in on the fun (with the proper adult
supervision). SASY (Supplied Air Snorkelling For Youth) is available at many operators
on the islands and can provide an exciting introduction to the marine world.
Additionally, kids between the ages of eight and twelve can participate in the PADI
Bubblemaker or the Scuba Rangers programmes – where they are introduced to scuba
under an Instructor’s guidance and can experience the underwater breathing sensation
in depths up to 12 feet.
Unlike many underwater hot spots, which require exhausting travel to lonely outposts,
the Cayman Islands is only a 75-minute flight from Miami. Many international airlines
have direct flight service to Grand Cayman from major U.S. gateways (Atlanta,
Charlotte, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale, Houston, Memphis, Miami, Newark, Philadelphia,
Tampa), as well as from Toronto, Canada, London (Heathrow), UK, Havana, Cuba and
Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica. Some, like our national carrier, Cayman Airways,
offer discount packages for divers and dive groups. The airline’s diver-friendly service
includes a variety of accommodations such as easy equipment check-in and a dedicated team of specialists to help dive groups plan the ultimate trip. Once you’ve arrived
on Grand Cayman, making the jump to either Little Cayman or Cayman Brac couldn’t
be easier. Cayman Airways jets fly to Cayman Brac, and Island Air offers daily flights to
both Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.
Check our web site at www.divecayman.ky for a list of all carriers serving the islands.

Snorkel Away
Learn To Dive or Dive To Learn
Whether you’re interested in a resort program, referral course, open water certification,
advanced specialty or Divemaster and Instructor training, our dive operators offer it all. If
you’re a diver or snorkeller in need of equipment, there are a number of on-island retailers
who can outfit you from head to toe. Just bring your smile and let the folks here hook you
up with some top-notch gear.
If you’re not a diver, and are currently not interested in
becoming one, no worries. Some of the very best sites
the Cayman Islands has to offer are in shallow waters,
tailor-made for snorkelling. If this is your first snorkelling
trip, there are some things you should be aware of,
particularly when it comes to equipment.
Resort Courses/Discover Scuba – Anyone interested
in diving can experience the thrill of the underwater
world without making the full commitment to a complete
certification programme. All it takes is a couple of hours
learning the basic skills in a pool and you’re ready to enjoy
diving in Cayman’s beautiful waters with your Instructor.
#1 Mask – Perhaps the single most important piece of equipment you’ll need. Ideally, you’ll
want a high quality mask with a tight-fitting seal. The easiest way to test the fit of a mask is
to lift the strap over the top of the mask and press the mask to your face (being sure not to
capture any strands of hair) without breathing in. If it creates a slight vacuum and stays tight
to your face, you’ve got the right fit.
Open Water Referrals – Referrals are an excellent option
for visiting divers who have completed the classroom and
pool portions of an open water certification course and
want to make the requisite open water dives in Cayman’s
warm, clear waters. Getting started on this process can be
made easier if the new divers get in touch with their local
dive shops in their hometowns.
#2 Snorkel – A snorkel is a snorkel is a snorkel. Not true!
There are varying bore sizes, different designs, alternating
internal air pockets, etc., The best advice is to find a snorkel
that is comfortable, delivers air easily and breathes as dry
as possible.
Open Water Certification and Refresher Courses –
Once you’re in the Cayman Islands, your entire open
water certification can be completed in as little as three
days. For travellers who haven’t been diving in a while,
quick and easy refresher courses are available through
most on-island operators.
#3 Fins – Fins give you mobility and speed. You have a
choice between full-foot fins (that fit like a slipper around
your heel) or open-heel fins. The latter are usually worn
with some kind of neoprene "booties" with flexible rubber
soles. No matter what type of fins you choose, make sure
they fit snugly, but not too tight.
Specialty and Technical Courses – From underwater photography and wreck diving to navigation and night diving,
the Cayman Islands offers a complete menu of specialty
training options. If you’re interested in something more
technical, such as nitrox, tri mix, rebreather and extended
range diving, our on-island professionals can assist you in
learning these disciplines as well.
#4 Outerwear – You may want to use a nylon dive skin or a thin wetsuit, both for warmth
and for protection from little stinging things and the sun. If you choose not to wear one, at
least don a T-shirt for sun protection. While many of the Cayman Islands’ snorkel sites are
found just off the beach, a great many more are found off a rocky shoreline called ironshore.
It’s best to patrol these sites in reef shoes or some other type of protective footwear. It’s also
against the law to wear gloves when snorkelling or diving in Cayman waters.
Picture This…
One of the biggest thrills of visiting the underwater realm
is capturing the beauty and magic for friends and family
back home. Because the marine laws governing our three
islands are so strictly enforced (what’s found underwater
stays underwater), you’ll need to try your hand at underwater
photography if you want to bring the experience home.
Fortunately, you will find any number of on-island
providers who can help. Many operators also video tape
diving or snorkelling activities – a perfect keepsake, great for bragging rights!
Divemaster and Instructor Training – If you are ready
to take the plunge and join the ranks of the professional
dive community, the Cayman Islands provides the best
training available.
Safety – The Cayman Islands boasts state-of-the-art
medical facilities including a hyperbaric chamber (located
on Grand Cayman) and in the event of an emergency,
quality care can be provided in minutes. All dive boats
carry oxygen and have fully trained staff in emergency
first response & oxygen provision.

Surface Intervals
Deeper Still
Preposterous as it may sound, it is
possible to enjoy the sparkling waters of
the Cayman Islands without strapping a
mask on your face or a tank on your
back. Right from the beach, you can rent
a wave runner or sailboat, go parasailing,
windsurfing or water-skiing. For those
moments when you’re not frolicking in the
crystal clear waters, there are a host of
land-based attractions to immerse yourself
in as well, including more than 170 worldclass dining options, championship caliber
golf courses and a variety of full-service
spas designed to truly pamper.
It’s also possible to experience the exhilaration
of our underwater world without getting wet.
Simply book a tour with one of the Cayman
Islands’ submarine operators. For the more
adventurous, there’s the Atlantis Deep Explorer,
capable of taking two passengers on dives of
up to 1000 feet. Other operators include the
Seaworld Explorer, which can take 35 passengers
just five feet below the surface, and SEAmobile
Submarine Tours which offers two passengers a
panoramic 360-degree view at 60 feet. For
larger groups, the Atlantis XI and Nautilus semisubmarine can accommodate up to 48 and 60
passengers respectively on daily air-conditioned
excursions over Grand Cayman’s various reefs
and wrecks. They are also unique and exciting
venues for hosting children’s parties.
From luxury hotels to exquisitely furnished
conominiums, stately private houses and
of course, small and intimate dive lodges,
the Cayman Islands offers a wide range
of accomodations. For a complete list of
places to stay and things to see and do,
visit www.divecayman.ky.
If you are Tri mix certified, Cayman Walls are
waiting to be explored below the 130 foot depth
limit – pristine, untouched sponge belts that will
awe you in mass, color and size.

Grand Cayman
With over 250 dive sites to choose from, Grand Cayman offers some of the greatest underwater
diversity anywhere in the world. It’s all here: deep, dramatic walls adorned with sponges and
corals in a stunning array of colours; shallow reefs filled with schooling fish and small invertebrates;
and an assortment of wrecks, each with their own peculiar character and special inhabitants. There’s
also the world’s best 12-foot dive, the legendary Stingray City. Our local watersports association
has adopted the 130-foot depth limit in its Safety Guidelines, making so much more available to
divers.
Reefs & Marine Life
Grand Cayman’s reefs offer a variety of marine life encounters. Aware that strangely clad divers
and snorkellers pose no threat, the fish and critters are amazingly docile and welcoming. Large
silvery Tarpon hover motionless midwater, surrounded by glittery Silversides and magnificent
French Angelfish. Huge Barrel Sponges and swirling schools of fish are equally common.
Gorgonians and hard corals also thrive in the clear, warm waters.
There are so many dive sites that are teeming with marine life you won’t be disappointed no
matter where you go. Dive & snorkel operators visit different sites on a daily basis – so if it’s
variety that you are looking for – we have it! If there is a particular type of marine life that you’d
like to see or capture on film – mention it to your dive/snorkel operator and they will give you
the best advice on where to go. Best of all, no site is more than a few minutes offshore. Below are
just a few island favourites.

Walls & Wrecks
Among Grand Cayman’s more spectacular dive attractions are the walls that completely
surround it. There are two wall systems in Grand Cayman; the 60-foot drop off for those lazy
afternoon shallow dives, and the second drop-off to the deep wall into the abyss. All wear a
cloak of luxurious marine life. Orange Elephant Ear and Strawberry Vase Sponges form vibrant
underwater bouquets, while Spotted Eagle Rays, Green Turtles and other deep-water pelagics
cruise by for a look-see. Grand Cayman’s storied wrecks are equally impressive. Reefs in and of
themselves, each wreck has acquired its own family of eccentric residents, all too eager to pose
for passing photographers.

Snorkelling
For snorkellers, there are coral heads and shallow water wrecks galore and, of course, a
teeming abundance of marine life in every colour of the rainbow. The best snorkelling is where
you find “iron shore” as opposed to sand – iron shore is dry coral that used to be below the
water. Snorkellers should have buddies while in the water for fun and added safety.

Stingray City
Marine Parks
Laws and regulations have been established by
the Cayman government for a complete and
comprehensive system of Marine Park Zones
strategically placed throughout Grand Cayman,
Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Working in
conjunction with local watersports operators, the
government maintains a system of permanent
moorings at all popular dive sites. The purpose
of these moorings is to prevent coral and sponge
damage by the continual daily anchoring of boats.
It’s an exhilarating, one-of-a-kind adventure.
The world’s best 12-foot dive on a sandy
seafloor in Grand Cayman’s North Sound
where Southern Stingrays congregate in
numbers is a must-do! Accustomed to the
human interaction, these gentle creatures
waste no time surrounding both divers and
snorkellers alike. In and around they glide
honing in on their favourite delicacy, the
morsels of squid that your dive or snorkel
guide will bring along. Joining the Stingrays
are Yellowtail Snapper, always eager to gulp
up what the rays miss. Whether you’re an
experienced diver or a family of first-time
snorkellers, the memories of swimming
amongst these graceful giants will stay with
you long after you surface. Be forewarned,
however, one trip to Stingray City is but a
prelude to another. And another. And another.
The Cayman Islands government has divided
the reefs into: 1) Marine Park Zones;
2) Replenishment Zones; and 3) Environmental
Zones. Each carries its own restrictions and
regulations. The Marine Park Zones encompass
a large number of wall diving sites and
shallow coral reefs where much of the diving
is done. The Replenishment Zones are mostly
shallow water lagoons, sounds and fisheries
where stocks of conch and lobster are allowed
to breed and reproduce undisturbed. The
Islands’ lone Environmental Zone was
established to ensure the preservation of the
mangrove fringed North Sound – See maps
on page 20.
As an added measure of protection for the
islands’ fragile eco-system, diving with gloves
is prohibited, so that divers and snorkellers are
not tempted to touch any of the marine life.

Cayman Brac
Walls & Wrecks
Long known as one of Grand Cayman’s quieter sisters the tiny island of Cayman Brac
screams to underwater enthusiasts the world over. At the top of any must-do list for visitors
to ‘the Brac’ is the MV Capt. Keith Tibbetts. A 330-foot Russian destroyer intentionally sunk
off Cayman Brac’s west end in 1996, she remains the only divable Russian warship in the
Western Hemisphere. Joining the Tibbetts as part of the Brac’s unique underwater world is
Oceanic Voyagers, a 7-foot tall bronze statue created by world-renowned marine sculptor
Dale Evers. The sculpture, which depicts a pair of Spotted Dolphins cavorting with the
Cayman Islands’ famous Southern Stingrays, was sunk off the Brac’s coast at Radar Reef in
January 2003 as part of a year long celebration commemorating the Cayman Islands’
Quincentennial anniversary. These large pelagics literally come to life in and around the
multitude of dive sites on this stunning island. Other attractions to be found in the waters
off the Brac include two other wrecks, an ancient anchor embedded in a wall, numerous
healthy shallow reefs and miles of colourful sponge and coral laden drop-offs. The majestic
walls of Cayman Brac showcase a labyrinth of tunnels and swim-throughs in what is the
Caribbean’s very own underwater Grand Canyon.

Reefs & Marine Life
Cayman Brac’s laid-back topside lifestyle has been adopted below the ocean’s surface as
well. The island’s miles of shallow reefs are inhabited by a multitude of marine critters, all of
which possess the same laissez faire attitude. You’ll be amazed at how little attention these
denizens of the deep pay divers and snorkellers who intermingle among them. Swim freely
with giant Tarpon; take a Queen Angelfish’s majestic portrait; even watch as cleaner fish ply
their trade on fiercesome-looking Tiger Grouper. A world of awe and opportunity awaits
you in the warm, clear waters of Cayman Brac.

Little Cayman
Don’t let the name fool you. There’s nothing "little" about the adventures divers
and snorkellers will find off the shores of Little Cayman. Bloody Bay Wall, the
island’s most famous attraction, offers the finest drop-offs in the Caribbean.
Plunging to mind-boggling depths, Little Cayman’s exhilarating walls are covered
with brightly hued sponges and corals. There are spectacular formations of Yellow
Tube, Strawberry and Orange Vase Sponges and tangled masses of scarlet Rope
Sponges. Eagle Rays, dolphin and other large pelagics join would-be explorers
as they traverse the walls. For snorkellers, there’s the thrill of swimming amidst
silversides, jacks, bonefish and conch along the leading edge of these dramatic
6,000 ft. drop-offs.

Reefs & Marine Life
Little Cayman is a tropical wilderness above and below the sea. The least
developed of the three Cayman Islands, her human inhabitants number just
over 100. Though famous for her walls, the island also offers pristine shallow
reefs hosting an incredibly abundant and diverse collection of marine life, both
large and small. Since the underwater citizens barely notice the human presence,
even barracuda and groupers have no qualms about posing for photographs.
Night dives off Little Cayman are delightful. Octopus can be found roaming the
reefs, looking for dinner. Squid dart to and fro, flashing their vibrant colours at
unsuspecting onlookers.
