The weight was taking a toll on both Wendy and Don and the quality of their
lives. Wendy suffered from serious weight-related health conditions including
high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and pre-diabetes. Don was on high blood
pressure medication and was having a hard time even playing with his kids.
Together, since having surgery in 2007, they have lost over
400 pounds and have gained a new lease on life. “We’re both able
to wake up and feel rested – no more sleep apnea,” Wendy says. “Neither of us
takes blood pressure medication now, and I’m no longer pre-diabetic.”

Hello Readers,
This is our annual beauty issue and a personal favorite of mine. This is the issue where each year we, along
with other local businesses who volunteer their time,
and a nonprofit organization that helps local women
achieve their personal best, work together to provide
one young lady with a total makeover, helping her to
see both her outer and inner beauty. Sometimes that
can be so crucial to achieving self confidence and self
esteem. Some of us, myself included, are so concerned
with not looking as good as we would like on the outside that we feel we are not at our best on the inside
either. It takes that eye opening moment — when these young women can see that they
are truly beautiful — for them to realize it actually started on the inside all along. I am
so grateful to have the opportunity to facilitate this project. I believe it is so important
that people, women especially, have the opportunity to achieve their goals because
in the end they bring more to society as a whole; and as their children see them succeed, they in turn are motivated to become goal-oriented members of society also. I am
pleased that I can do my small part to participate in the process and I applaud those
organizations that see the potential in these women and help them to achieve it. Okay,
off the soapbox. Read on to find out what else we have in store for you in this issue.
Samantha Arroyo has written a fabulous article with beauty tips, trends and information. Find out about the new pill to get rid of gray hair, how to keep long hair healthy,
vitamin therapy, what to do with those puffy eyes, acne, anti-aging tips, and much
more. I’m sure there is something here for everyone. We also have a great article on correct bra fitting; Dr. Jennifer Warren’s article on Hunger Triggers-The Diet Food Effect;
the latest in my weight loss battle and our Best in Beauty winners. Plus, my very own
makeup makeover with Kriss Soterion who shows us how we can look younger just by
using the right makeup. She did a fabulous job on my face!!! Make sure you check out
the articles that our regular columnists have written about both inner and outer beauty.
We have more exciting new writers starting with this issue: Alexandra Morrill writing in the Parenting section about Children and Reading; Peggy Nolan who shares advice for Step Moms; and Christine Davis writing about being a Single (Again) Mom in
our Dating section. I have also started a new We Tried It project with Dr. Holly Ruocco
of Advanced Allergy Centers of NE. Dr. Ruocco offers a breakthrough technology for
patients with allergies. This technology and the information that I have gleaned from
AAC of NE is fascinating. We also have a fantastic article for those of you who are providing long-term care for a family member. Read these tips on managing and creating
balance. Finally, we have an article for those of you are interested in learning about
Flower Essences and how they are used in the wellness process.

I met this amazing woman a few years ago. She was a business colleague whose
energy and bright smile just complimented her intelligence in the world of marketing. Somehow, we clicked personally as well. I don’t remember what exactly
made us click but I do know “who” made it happen. I’m a firm believer that people come into your life for a reason…she is one of them. We shared some lunches…even met for breakfast one morning so her twin girls could meet an “author”.
Oh, they were delightful…so excited to sit with me. I can’t begin to tell you how
excited I was and honored that she would think me important enough to allow
me to meet her precious daughters. Our “business” paths have since shifted, but
we have remained connected and I am truly grateful for that. I wrote this poem
to her before that shift to help her through some challenging moments in her life.

ORANGE ROSEMARY CHICKEN

Infused with fresh herb and citrus flavors, this Orange Rosemary Chicken
recipe will be perfect for your next
family dinner. It’s easy enough to
make on a weeknight, or enjoy over
the weekend and use the leftovers in
salads, sandwiches, or pasta dishes.
The carcass can also be used in making a delicious homemade stock.
Orange Rosemary
Chicken
Serves 5-6
Ingredients:
1 whole chicken, 6-8 lbs,
thawed
1 large orange, cut into
quarters
2-3 sprigs fresh rosemary
1 ½ cups Chicken broth
2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 tbsp dried rosemary
Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Remove
gizzards and rinse and pat dry chicken; place on oven rack in deep baking dish, breast side up. Stuff chicken
with whole rosemary sprigs and orange segments. Add broth to pan.
Drizzle oil and massage into top of
chicken; season with remaining ingredients.

Bake chicken for 30 minutes, covered
with aluminum foil. Remove foil and
bake an additional 1 ½ - 2 hours, until top is browned, plastic meat thermometer has popped out (if one came
with the bird, that is) and juices run
clear. Let chicken rest for at least 20
minutes before carving; remove orange segments and rosemary sprigs
from the cavity and discard.
While meat rests, transfer liquid from
baking dish to saucepan, and simmer over medium heat until sauce is
reduced by about half, 15-20 minutes
(use a splash of chicken broth or orange juice to thin sauce if it becomes
too thick). Serve alongside carved
chicken.

One Saturday in February after
yet another New Hampshire snow
storm, I went for lunch with some
girlfriends to the Bavaria Restaurant
in Hooksett, NH. I had trained in
Switzerland as part of my Culinary
Arts degree and enjoyed the dishes
prepared in Switzerland, Germany,
and Austria. At heart, it is real peasant fare. That isn’t a bad thing. It just
means good, hearty food that doesn’t
need fancy garnishes, sauces or extravagant ingredients. Even though
I haven’t been to Bavaria, when I
walked in the door, there was an immediate feeling of recognition. It was
like an elegant Bier Keller without
the noise and smoke I remembered
from my student days. The walls are
plain but decorated with old cooking utensils, beautiful spoons, and
copper pans. Near the entry is a 3-4
foot long, hand-carved wooden, crucified Christ. I had seen many carvings like this in Austria and Switzerland in both homes and churches.
Dark wood tables and chairs reflect
the wood around the walls and windows. A flag of Bavaria was mounted
behind the bar. Ceramic steins (beer
mugs) are arranged on shelves. And
if you are waiting to eat, spend the
time to take a good look at the old
black and white photos on the walls.
It wasn’t crowded at lunchtime, but
enough people were there so you
didn’t feel you were rattling around
on your own. They do advise making
reservations for Friday and Saturday
night.

German Restaurant

home to my husband. A major advantage is that all the sausages tasted ‘real’
unlike too many German sausages in
a supermarket. The sausages all tasted different, two were more of the hot
dog texture but with flavor, one was
crisply grilled and one was definitely
s p i c y.
We always check out the menu in
advance and start deciding what to
choose. Plus we try to order a variety
of dishes to share, so we can experience even more taste sensations. The
online menu has photos of some of
the dishes, but none that we tried.
The soup of the day ‘Tagesuppe’
was a rich, creamy leek soup ($4.50)
that Connie and Allyson chose. I had
made leek soup recently so I wanted
to try some of the sausages. Of course,
I did get to taste the leek soup and it
was wonderful, but definitely made
with cream, none of that non-fat milk
here.
I chose Münchner Wurstplatte
($13.90) – literally Munich sausage
plate. It is described as a variety of
Bavarian sausages, served with sauerkraut or Bavarian potato salad.
The very friendly, knowledgeable
waitress told us it was one of each of
the sausages on the German sausage
specialties list: Nürnberger Rostbratwürstl, Bratwurst, Wienerwürstl, and
Regensburger. They are all listed just
as sausages so you have no idea what
you are getting, but I wanted to try a
variety, share with Allyson and Connie, and still have some left to take
I asked for Bavarian potato salad
rather than sauerkraut. I was told that
Bavarian potato salad was not like the
German potato salad we are used to
here, with vinegar, onions and bacon.
You can see it in the photo the four
sausages with the potato salad. The
salad looked a bit like over cooked
mashed potatoes, but it was cold,
with a tang from some vinegar and
just a little bit of onion. Quite different but with the mustard, everything
married well together.
For our entrées, I looked forward to a
real Wiener Schnitzel. This is normally a thin piece of veal, breaded and
fried until crisp and golden. Apart
from eating a lot of these in Switzerland and Austria, the last time I had a
really good schnitzel was in London.

made from pork. That day, veal was
offered as an alternative to some of
the pork dishes. They charge $5.50 to
substitute veal for pork. I chose Jägerschnitzel ($21.80 +$5.50), a lean boneless piece of veal, coated in breadcrumbs, topped with a mushroom
cream sauce and served with homemade spätzle (fresh noodles that
look like a mis-shapen coffee bean).
Allyson had the same dish but with
breaded pork and Connie was good
and had the pork without breading.
You had the option of roast potatoes,
which might sound quite boring.
However, while we were waiting, we
of course were looking at the other
customers’ meals as they were served.
The roast potatoes were like massive,
crunchy, obviously pan fried, home
fries, not just thrown in a deep fryer.
They’ll do for next time.
In case you think this is expensive
for a lunch, the portions are the same
at lunch as dinner and so are the
same price. I didn’t take a photo of
our entrées as they arrived. The portions were so big, we were rendered
speechless, and smelt so good that we
just started eating straight away. The
men would be quite happy with that
amount of food, but we all took home
half of our entrée. Silence fell while
we mmm’d our way through lunch:
the meat was tender and juicy; the
light crispy breadcrumb crust wasn’t
overcooked; our really indulgent,
creamy mushroom sauce was made
from fresh mushrooms, no canned
mushrooms here. Plus the pleasure
of home made spätzle we hadn’t cooked
ourselves. And a silly
thing that ladies would
notice, we really liked
the white china with a
raised white pattern;
the soup bowls were an
attractive shape as well.
There are a variety of
traditional German dishes on the
menu – potato pancakes ($7.00), cucumber salad in a sour cream dressing
($4.50), spätzle ($13.80) with cheese
gratin, topped with roasted onions,
fresh mushrooms in a cream sauce
($12.80), served with a bread dumpling, Sauerbraten ($19.90) which is
marinated, roasted beef, boiled in a
wine based sauce, with a special gravy and served with a bread dumpling
and red cabbage. Allyson had just
left beef in a sauerbraten marinade
for dinner and I had the ingredients
ready to make it as well, so we didn’t
choose that. OK, we should have tried
it to see how ours compared but then
it would have been the same taste
two days running. I was also curious
to try their Rinderroulade ($21.90)
which is rolled slices of tender beef,
filled with mustard, onions, bacon
and pickles, braised in its own juice
and served with homemade mashed
potatoes and red cabbage. Yet another dish that Allyson and I both make.
And my husband loves my red cabbage made from scratch.
I said we always check the menu out
in advance, so we knew what we
were going to have dessert: Apfelstrudel ($7.50). This is a traditional
Bavarian apple strudel (think apple

and whipped cream. The waitress
brought a single portion on a large
plate with 3 spoons arranged around
the edge so we could easily share it.
Frequently in America, strudel is
made with filo pastry. This was made
with traditional strudel pastry. It
was a bit thick on the bottom of the
pastry, but somehow the whole dessert vanished. And the coffee served
with it came in a good, large mug. We
were also considering ordering the
Pfannkuchen ($7.90) which is a freshbaked thin pancake (crèpe) filled with
vanilla ice cream and topped with
chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
But again, we all make crèpes.
And my husband had no problem
devouring the substantial leftovers
I brought home. He even offered to
stop on the way home one night since
it is so close to Manchester and pick
up take-out. So there’s a recommendation for you all.
Plus for the men (and yes the ladies as
well), there is a small bar where they
could sit and drink from the beer list.
This included German beer on draft,
plus at least 8 imported beers, - and
to real beer drinkers, Bud Light and
a non-alcoholic beer don’t count as
beer but at least they are available
for the others in your party. If you go
to the website they actually state the
flavor profile and alcohol content of
each beer so you can research them in
advance and do a beer tasting there.
They also offer a small selection of
German red and white wines, Italian
red wine, some liqueurs, sodas and
juice.

ASPARAGUS IN AN ORANGE VINAIGRETTE
The first day of Spring will have come
and gone by the time this issue is published. I know we have frequently had
sledding birthday parties even after
the first day of Spring, but let’s hope
that the snow will soon be over. Soon
the daffodils will be peaking through
the soil, followed by crocus, and then
it will be time for me to get the fresh
herbs onto my deck and fill the window boxes and containers with the
flowers that attract the humming
birds to our deck. We love sitting and
eating on the deck at night, as well as
weekend breakfasts. Nothing beats a
warm evening, a bottle of wine, and
even just plain bread and cheese. But
for something a bit more special try
out my recipes. None are that difficult
or expensive (except for the lobster of

course), but you can wow your
friends with a meal that tastes
wonderful and can be made in
advance, so that only the cream
for the dessert needs to be
done as your friends arrive.
This menu would be great
for part of a graduation party – I know the kids (of any
age) just want burgers and
chips; or for a Girls’ weekend, bridal
shower, wedding rehearsal dinner or
a small wedding.
I will be making these recipes as part
of a Royal Wedding Breakfast on
Wednesday 27 April (just 2 days before the Wedding of Prince William
and Kate Middleton) on WMUR’s
ABC’s Channel 9 Cooks Corner.
ASPARAGUS IN AN ORANGE
VINAIGRETTE
(6-8 portions) – naturally gluten free
Using orange zest as well as orange
juice concentrate makes a really tangy
orange vinaigrette that I love. Leave
out orange zest if you prefer vinaigrette to be less tangy.

Buy enough asparagus for 3-5 pieces
per person (or more) depending on
whether it is thick or thin stick spears
of asparagus.
1/3 cup olive oil - not extra virgin - it
is far too strong
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar or
champagne vinegar – make sure it
says made from grapes or wine on
the bottle, some wine vinegars are
now made from ethanol.
¼ c orange juice concentrate undiluted (I buy Tropicana or Kirkland
frozen concentrate and decant it into
a container in the fridge or freeze it
in an ice cube tray. It lasts for several
weeks in the fridge. Do taste it each
time you use it to check it hasn’t
started fermenting. I also use the
orange concentrate for the base of
hot orange sauce for duck and other
recipes.)
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey
Grated zest of ¼ or ½ orange
½ teaspoon salt or to taste; freshly
ground black pepper
2-4 tablespoons finely chopped fresh
parsley
1-2 tablespoons ends of green onions
or fresh chives
Chopped salted cashews - quantities
to taste - optional
1. In a small jug mix together oil, vinegar, orange juice concentrate, mustard, honey or maple syrup, orange
rind, salt and pepper. Stir well until
honey/maple and salt are dissolved.
Add fresh parsley and chives or green
onions.
2.
Alternatively
put dressing ingredients (except
parsley and green
onions/chives) in
small blender and run. Add herbs
and run just to chop. If you run the
blender too long then the dressing
will turn pale green. The dressing will
stay thick mixed in a blender. If you
just mix it in a jug it tends to separate
out on standing. The dressing stays a
more orange color if you don’t use the
immersion blender to chop the herbs.
Or, you can add some sour cream or
mayo to give both a creamier texture
and a lighter color.
3. Break asparagus at the bending
point, discard ends and cook in single
layer in a skillet of boiling water until
tender. Just keep taste-testing the asparagus to your preference, roughly
10 minutes, but keep testing.
4. Drain and rinse in cold water containing some ice, then drain again.
This helps keep the bright green color
of asparagus. You can cook the asparagus the day before.
5. Pour about half of dressing over
cooked asparagus in 9” pie plate or
similar size container where asparagus can lie flat in one layer. Refrigerate for about 2 hours. (Decant leftover dressing into jam jar or plastic
container. It will last in the fridge for
about 2 weeks. Stir well before use.)
6. Remove asparagus from fridge
about half an hour before arranging
on plates. Arrange asparagus spears

7. Top with sprinkling of chopped
cashews and serve with additional
vinaigrette for those that like plenty

You can also top asparagus with tiny,
cooked salad shrimp, smoked salmon, crab, lobster etc.
Note: Asparagus goes through the
body very rapidly and has a very
strong ammonia smell.
Don’t choose asparagus by how thick
or thin it is. The thickness difference
is due to different varieties of asparagus - consider Granny Smith v. Gala
apples. Choose based on how tight
the flower tips are (should be closed)
no wetness/sliminess visible on the
flower tips and firm stalks without
wrinkles.

white snow now turned dismal and
dirty slowly melts, and the chill of an
icy winter is lifted like a veil, life and
color return to New England. The
vibrant colors spring offers are a joy
to see as it puts an end to what can
sometimes turn out to be a dismal
winter.
I can’t wait to hear the sounds of life
awakening and to smell the fragrant
scent of spring’s sweet blossoms,
buds, leaves, and grass. It’s that time
of the year when we all come out of
hibernation!
Spring is a good time to plant your
gardens too. I’ve only just begun
down this road, but for an amateur
I do know a few things that are easy
to grow. In conjunction with my recipes, I’d like to encourage you to try
and grow a few things for yourself
this year. Whether it’s in a pot, garden
or hanging basket, you can have fresh
herbs and veggies at your fingertips.
There is nothing like using what you
have grown yourself, not to mention
it’s sometimes cheaper too.
Bush Green Beans I have found are
quite easy to grow. They are very
abundant and I can usually get them
to produce fresh green beans until the
end of summer. Try it! Plant them in
rows and see what happens. I always
grow my own fresh herbs. Did you
know that if you plant chives, scallions or parsley in your garden they’ll
come back year after year? It costs
pennies and it’s satisfying when it returns each year.
My recipe calls for horseradish which
I’ve yet to try and grow myself, although I hear it’s quite easy. So, you
may want to give it a whirl!
Typically, when you think turkey,
you think Thanksgiving. Turkey
doesn’t always have to be a heavy,
sleepy meal. Here’s a recipe with just
as many bright notes as spring itself.
Its clean, jazzy, horseradish awakens your palate and the sweet tangy
cranberries are a burst of flavor that is
then finished with cream, making the
sauce velvety smooth and luscious.
Turkey Cutlets with Cranberry
Currant Sauce-4 Servings
8-3 oz. Turkey cutlets
1 tablespoon oil
2/3 cup currant Jelly
½ cup heavy cream
1 cup turkey stock
¼ cup cranberries, dried
3 teaspoons horseradish, prepared
1 ½ teaspoons Dijon mustard
salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons chives, minced
Wash and dry turkey cutlets. If necessary, pound to 1/4 inch thick.
Heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat and add turkey cutlets in a single layer. Cook briefly on
each side, just until cooked through.
Remove from pan, place in containers
and cool in refrigerator.

currant jelly, cream, turkey stock,
and dried cranberries and cook un-

til thickened and syrupy. Then add the
horseradish and mustard and season
to taste with salt and pepper. Let cool.
Pour over turkey slices, and garnish with
minced chives.
When your green bean harvest comes
in, try out my recipe for roasted green
beans is a great way to jazz up the typical steamed method! They are baked in
the oven with onions and garlic making
them quite healthy and the tang of balsamic vinegar at the end is a nice touch.
Roasted Green Beans – 4 Servings
6 sups green beans, cleaned & trimmed
1 large onion, sliced
6 garlic cloves, sliced
3 tablespoons olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Combine the green beans with the onion,
garlic, and olive oil. Season to taste with
salt and pepper. Spread combined ingredients onto a foil-lined shallow roasting
pan. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring once or
twice. When done baking, toss with the
balsamic vinegar.

The Fine Art of Making
Whole Leaf Tea

We enjoy this incredible brew on a
daily basis, but do you really know
how the leaf gets from the field to the
cup? The story of tea has been clad
in mystery, since it was first discovered around 5000 years ago. Emperor
Shen Nong, while scouting the far
reaching lands of China for medicinal
herbs, came upon the tea leaf that just
happened to fall directly in his cup of
boiling water. His curiosity and delight in the taste of the brew led to the
cultivation of the tea plant Camellia
sinensis.
This plant is indigenous to China;
however, it is grown and harvested
in temperate climates all over the
world. Many are surprised to hear
that the tastes, textures and aromas of
the different varieties of tea all come
from the same plant. What gives us
these qualities is the unique terrain,
climate, culture, and taste preferences
that each country offers. However,
the magic begins to happen beginning with the cultivation and ending
with the processing of the leaf.
The Plucking of the Leaf: The tea
pluckers rise in the early morning
hours. They work incredibly hard,
plucking by hand the top two leaves
and a bud, placing them in bamboo
darker oolongs. They are then panfired and dried to stop the oxidation
process.

These top three leaves are the newest shoots and produce the healthiest
and best tasting teas.
Black teas undergo a rolling or cutting
process and are then sorted on a series of different screens and separated
into evenly sized grades. They undergo a full oxidation process which
can be anywhere between 30 minutes
to 8 hours, with each time producing
different flavor profiles, aromas and
caffeine content in the tea. When the
tea expert feels the exact aroma has
been reached, the tea is fired to stop
oxidation. The Estate Manager will
then determine through a cupping
process whether the leaves are perfect enough to leave his factory. After
production, the leaves are packed in
vacuum-sealed bags and transported
to the auction centers, where the tea
importers bring them to your favorite local tea
shops
for
you to appreciate.
The Sorting and Weighing: The tea
leaves are carried to the weighing
stations where they are sorted on
widespread plastic sheets and then
weighed. From here, the leaves are
brought by truckload down to the
factory.
Withering: The tea leaves are spread
out on screens in long ‘withering
troughs’ about 4 inches deep. Air
is blown under them, while the tea
leaves on top are being constantly
turned over to promote the drying
(withering) of the leaf. This 12-15
hour process reduces about 50% of
the moisture, making the leaf flexible
and limp.
From here, the process changes depending on the type of tea. White teas
are sent through a firing process to
immediately keep any oxidation from
occurring. This completes the White
tea processing. Green teas from China are pan-fired while the green teas
from Japan are steamed which stops
the oxidation of the leaf, allowing it
to keep its green color. The leaves are
then rolled and shaped, sometimes by
hand or more commonly by machine.

It had been a real dry spell – not a
date in weeks. There weren’t even any
offers for me to turn down. There had
not been a single possibility in sight
for weeks. I was feeling pretty vulnerable at this point. So when the handsome young man seated at the café
table next to me in the mall dining
area began to talk to me, I perked up.
To be honest though, I was not paying
much attention to what he was saying; rather, I was enjoying the visual
feast before my eyes, and the fact that
he was putting all his attention on me.

a handsome man!
already there. It was 7:25 – good thing
I left early.
He handed me a card with an address
written on it and asked me to meet
him at that address at 7:30 that evening. He had invited me to a singles
event that he said was very refreshing. Well, if most of the guests looked
anything like him, indeed that would
be refreshing. I smiled graciously, accepting the card and promised to see
him later that evening.
The look of dismay must have been
plastered all over my face, because a
cute thirty-something woman walked
up to me and asked if I was all right.
“Is this an event for singles?” I asked
her while desperately hoping she
would tell me that I was in the wrong
place.
I couldn’t wait to call Lindy, my best
friend in the whole world, who is
happily married to the best man ever,
and tell her the drought was over! I
rushed home to get ready for my big
night. Not wanting to be late, I made
sure to print out the directions to the
address he had given me, and left a
little early to allow for my usual mess
ups when driving.
When I arrived at the address he had
written, I was a little surprised at the
non-descript building. I guess I was
expecting something flashy situated
next to a big parking lot. This lot was
not large, yet there were several cars
I walked in to a rather small, unassuming space. There was a small
table with some bottled water, and
soda, chips, and plastic cups. So far
this was not getting my engines running. About ten people were seated in
metal folding chairs in a large circle.
My handsome hunk had not arrived
yet, and of the men who were, let me
assure you, they bore no resemblance
in age or looks to the stud muffin who
invited me here. I was beginning to
feel very disheartened.
“Yes, it is,” she said brightly. “Is this
your first time here?”
“It sure is,” I replied.
“Welcome! I’m Sandy! I come every
week. This group has helped me so
much. You’re in good hands here.”
Obviously we had different visions of
good hands. Just then, my handsome
maverick came in and announced,
“Welcome everyone! Let’s get started.
Oh Sadie, I see that you made it. This
is Sadie and it’s her first visit with us.”
Everyone looked up and said, “Hi Sadie!” I smiled, awkwardly wondering
whose dream I was in.
The handsome young man who invited me began to speak, and I again
was not listening to him. I was trying
to figure out where I was and why I
was here, when I heard someone say,
“Amen. I am so glad you helped me
find Jesus.”
Find Jesus? Are you kidding me? I
stood up, and announced very loudly,
“There must be some mistake. I know
right where Jesus is – in my heart. I
did not come here to look for Jesus. I
came here to find a man!”

Dating Single Again

If you had asked me back in 2003
when I was pregnant with my second
daughter what I thought the chances
were of my getting divorced, I would
have said less than zero. It’s true. I
was one of those people that truly
believed that it couldn’t happen to
me. Not because I didn’t understand
how tough marriage could be, that
was clear. It was because I thought
I was smarter than everyone else
who ended up divorced. Yup, I will
admit it now, I thought I knew better
and that I had made better decisions
than the other 50% who ended up
divorced. I didn’t get married too
young, we dated for four years and
we had both gotten our educations
taken care of. We waited another
five years before we had our first
child, Madeleine, and we had enough
money to not only pay the bills but I
was able to stay home with our new
baby. Life was good and I thought it
was because I made good decisions.
Now I’m not saying life was easy. No
ma’am. We lived in Georgia and our
families were in New Hampshire and
Florida. My husband traveled out
of state every week and I was alone
a lot. It was hard, often lonely and
sometimes scary but it was still good.
We laughed, had lots of friends and
a comfortable lifestyle. Emma, my
second child, was not planned. We
had said we would have a second baby
but weren’t thinking it would happen
so soon. I was really nervous about
the thought of raising two babies
alone but my ex seemed happy about
our second arrival and promised to

look for a job that didn’t require so
much travel. It didn’t happen.
I have another confession. It’s bad
too. I can still remember a time when
I was with my ex and talking about
divorced couples. I said (and I will
never forget it), “I feel so sorry for
single moms, their lives must be so
miserable. I am so happy that it won’t
ever happen to me.” Holy crap. It’s
true, I said those words and I believed
those words. I am still embarrassed
about that one. A lot of confessions in
this article, huh?
I could write a book just about my
divorce alone but this isn’t about the
divorce and the events that led up to
it. I’m not afraid to talk about it and
will continue to share bits and pieces
as they fit into my stories, however,
this is about life after the divorce. This
is about the fun, laughter, success
and happiness that I found after the
divorce. I never would have believed
that I could go through a divorce
and raise two girls alone and still be
happy. Life is still not easy. Actually
it is incredibly challenging and
sometimes it is miserable but it is good,
really good. I have had adventures
that never would have happened if
I had continued to live the life of a
stay at home mom in Alpharetta GA.
I have a whole new circle of friends
that I never would have met if I had
remained married. I have grown up
a lot too. I have learned not to be so
judgmental as I now know what it
feels like to be judged and labeled. I
have learned that I am a lot tougher

than I thought I could be. I have
learned to let other people help me.
Helping others makes you feel good
so I have learned to help other people
feel good.
Hmm, this dialogue seems to be
getting a bit too serious. I really want
to share the good stuff about being
“single again.” There is good stuff,
lots of it. Dating when you are older is
actually way better than dating when
you were young. I would prefer to
not have to shell out for a babysitter
every time I go out on a Saturday
night but other than that it is so much
preferable to dating in your twenties.
The men are more settled now and
less preoccupied with climbing the
corporate ladder. Another great thing
about dating older men is that you
don’t have to wonder if they are going
to lose their looks. If it was going to
happen it already did. If they were
going to get paunchy, they are there
now. If they are going to lose their
hair, it’s gone. No mysteries. You

How do you begin your day? Do you
jump out of bed, dash to the gym, and
then rush to work from there? When
the alarm wakes you from slumber,
do you give yourself a moment before
the mad rush of your day takes over?
You have so many responsibilities
between work and family. Most of
the time you are rushing from one
place to the next without stopping,
then fall into bed exhausted at the
end of the day, or lie awake with your
thoughts spinning with all you did
not get done. Who has time to find
Mr. Wrong, let alone Mr. Right?

you may be thinking. The answer is
simple. While you are breathing you
will be focusing your attention on
that which you are creating, in this
case a loving and healthy relationship
to enjoy. You will be feeling how
wonderful this is and expressing
gratitude for the opportunity to invite
love into your life. This will trigger
joy in your body, and you will begin
your day in a happier state. Over time
you will experience this happiness
through more of your day. Happy
people attract happy people.
I’d like to suggest that you try
something new. Let him find you. Put
the Law of Attraction to work for you.
Wake ten minutes earlier each day.
For those ten minutes, breathe slowly
and deeply. As you do this, smile and
feel the pleasure in your body and
mind. You are giving yourself several
gifts in these ten minutes.
More importantly, by deep breathing
and focusing on your breath, you quiet
your mind from the constant chatter
of thoughts that reside there. So your
mind is receptive to new thoughts,
which translates into a newer energy.
You are less resistant to holding onto
the old non-supporting thoughts that
go unnoticed most of the day, yet take
up residence in your energy body and
mind and create your experiences.
You are filling your body with
nourishing breath, releasing tension
and relaxing your body and mind. At
the same time, you are also energizing
your cells, bringing the deep fresh
oxygen in and taking toxins out. You
are also setting your day in a positive
way. You will be centered, relaxed,
and energized from a sense of calm
rather than a frenzied mad dash. You
are creating healthy cells for a healthy
body. You do want to feel great when
you meet Mr. Right, don’t you?
‘This is all well and good, but how is
breathing deeply at the start of my

at a church divorce
group,
and the people

be very grateful for this place.
At the first break, when everyone
went up for a drink, I took the opportunity to slip out. There are many
ways to cope with divorce and loneliness, and it was gratifying to know
that there are such groups available for those who wanted that support. Who knows, the day may come
when I go back and join them, yet for
now, I’ll keep plugging along in my
own way. It’s working well enough
for now.

Sports Center during dinner. Ick.
So here we are, single again and it isn’t
all that bad. If you take advantage
of all the wisdom your years have
bestowed upon you it can actually
be pretty good. Oh yeah, are you
wondering where I got the idea for
“Single Again?” Maybe not but I will
share it anyway. When I was going
through the divorce I really hated the
term “divorced”. It sounded negative,
bitter and ugly and I didn’t want to
check that box when I was filling
out my personal information. My
church in Alpharetta had these little
cards you could fill out with prayer
requests at each service. It asked
for your name, if you had children
and your marital status. The options
were: single, married or single again.
I liked that, it’s much more positive
and optimistic. Yup, that’s me, single
again.

Your Child to Read

Children who are reluctant readers
typically struggle for two reasons;
either they experience difficulty
with one or more of the technical
aspects of reading (decoding, fluency,
comprehension, etc.) or they find it
boring. While each can seem daunting
for parents and children to overcome,
with a little planning, creativity and
perseverance, you can help jump start
your child’s interest.
5 Simple Suggestion to Get Your
Child Reading (Yes, your child!):
RECONSIDER YOUR DEFINITION
OF READING
Allow your child to base reading
choices on what captures his/her
interest - whether it is a friend’s
recommendation, an interesting
topic, a colorful cover or a catchy
title. Getting caught up in reading
levels will only succeed in squeezing
the fun out of reading! And consider
non-traditional reading sources.
Magazines, cookbooks, comics, books
on tape, and television with the
closed-captioning feature activated
and the volume off are great ways to
build interest in reading.
KEEP BOOKS EVERYWHERE!
Books
should
be
prominent
throughout your house! Keep a wellstocked bookcase in your child’s room,
their play area, near the living room
armchair, and beside the potty. Keep
a stack of books by your bedside table
to entertain early-risers while you try
for a few more minutes of shuteye.
Stuff the backseat of your car with
books for road trips and errands, and
your purse for trips to the doctor’s
office or restaurants.
TAILOR THE EXPERIENCE TO
YOUR CHILD
Allow your child’s interests to
inform their book choice. Do you
have a daughter who loves Disney’s
Cinderella? Use that as a springboard
to explore Cinderella stories from
other cultures and fractured fairy
tales based on Cinderella, as well as
other classic fairy tales. Encourage
your budding readers to explore
books in a way that is comfortable for
them. Do they choose to ask “why” at
every opportunity, flip through pages
in random order, focus solely on the
illustrations, or move around while
you are reading? Let them!
CREATE VALUE IN BOOKS
Give books and books become
desirable! Take every opportunity to
alter your child’s mindset so that they
begin to view books as a welcome
and coveted commodity. Subscribe
to a monthly magazine, join a Bookof-the-Month Club, and take regular
trips to the library and book store.
Use books as a reward or bribe!
Allow children to stay up a little later
as long as they are reading. Build
an association between reading and
coveted time with a parent.
LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Let your children see you enjoying
books! Read aloud to them at night,
giggle with the absurd rhymes of Dr.
Seuss, bring to life the voice of Eloise,
and revel in the magic of Harry Potter.
Build a fort of pillows to curl up in,

read under the sheets with a flashlight
or in a tent outside. And be sure to let
children see you enjoying reading.
Curl up with a novel in the evening
or flip through the newspaper after
breakfast. Enjoy a magazine article
about your favorite sports team,
share books with your friends, and

who will listen! Children who see
their parents derive enjoyment from
reading are more likely to pursue
reading themselves.
If you try all of these strategies
and are still faced with a reluctant
reader, don’t despair. Growing
lifelong readers is a marathon, not
a sprint. Keep at it and your child

Baseball, softball, track, tennis, golf,
and lacrosse… what do all these
things have in common? They are all
spring sports! No matter what sport
your child enjoys, everyone is happy
to get playing outdoors. But as you
prepare for the spring sports season
make sure your child is ready to play
safely.
Has your child had a physical lately?
If it has been a year or more, schedule a physical for your child. Many
schools or private sports leagues require a current physical or have a
form that requires your physician’s
signature stating your child is healthy
enough to play. The earlier you make
an appointment or get that form
signed, the earlier your child can participate.
Does your child have the right equipment to play? Cleats, batting gloves,
sliding shorts, helmets, eye protection, mouth guards – each sport has
specific safety equipment. Make sure
your child has the appropriate gear
that fits correctly. If the safety gear is

difficult, but make time for healthy
snacks and good meals. It can go a
long way in helping your child do
better in school and perform better on
the playing field.
Show your child how proud you are
of how they’re doing by attending
games or practices. Some days it may
not be practical for you to be there
due to work or other family activities.
But show your support for their activities by taking in a game or practice
when you can. Be supportive of your
child no matter whether they win or
lose. You are helping build their selfesteem and your positive attitude
teaches them good sportsmanship.
• SPF – this is the Sun Protection
Factor. The higher the number
the longer the amount of time
you can theoretically spend in the
sun. However, this length of time
is approximate. So a sunscreen
with an SPF of 20 means you
could stay out in the sun 20
times longer without incurring
sun damage (sunburn) than you
could if you were outside without
a sunscreen. Keep in mind that
everyone’s skin is different. If you
have fair skin, that time frame
may be shorter than for someone
who does not sunburn as quickly.
• You must apply sunscreen
at least 15-30 minutes BEFORE
going out in the sun for it to work

Five Easy Steps to Effective Change

Step 1: Be clear and specific about
what you want to accomplish.
Reducing stress and disengaging
from your stepchild’s turmoil should
be your first priority because the
resulting stress is damaging to your
physical body. By communicating
your concerns and needs to your
husband, together you can work out a
strategy to effectively deal with your
stepchild or stepchildren.
Step 2: Take baby steps. Research,
know that you are not alone.
Change doesn’t happen overnight
and there are no magic pills. Take
some time to research any health
or behavior problems that may be
affecting your stepchild. It’s also
important to understand the effects
of divorce on children. Suggested

Understand that things may get worse

with his dog. Suddenly, he sees his father storm out of the house, with his
mother right behind him screaming
and hollering angry words. The little
boy is experiencing a trauma. In a
matter of seconds, his nervous system
decided that dogs and ice cream and
even the Bermuda grass phenolics are
negative substances. Now, when the
child consumes dairy products, his
stomach rejects them. Bottom line?
A negative association commonly
causes allergies and other chronic
conditions.

Flower Essence Therapy for
Emotional Well Being

Flower Essences are a gentle, safe and
effective therapy that heal at an emotional, spiritual level. They are extremely diluted extracts from flowers
that fall under the umbrella of vibrational medicine and are related to the
use of acupuncture, aromatherapy,
and homeopathy. Rather than using
the herbal properties of flowers for
healing purposes, the process actually imbues a tincture with the energetic signature of the plant life. Working
on your emotions and mental state, it
can bring healing to all levels, just as
Homoeopathy does. Flower Essences
are very similar in theory to Homoeopathy and actually stemmed from
Dr Bach’s study of Homoeopathy.
History
Dr. Bach, the founder of the Bach
Flower Essences, studied medicine at
the University College Hospital, London, and obtained a Diploma in Public Health at Cambridge. He practiced
for over twenty years in London as a
Harley Street consultant and bacteriologist. While he found success in the
conventional medical world he began
to focus less on the diseases and more
on the people who had them. It was
the patient and their underlying emotions that held Dr. Bach’s true interest.
He observed that people had 38 different dysfunctional emotional patterns
and came to the conclusion that if
you fixed their emotional health then
their physical health would improve.

The story goes that Dr. Bach was naturally impatient and easily agitated if
he had to wait for anything. According to Julian Barnard, author of Bach
Flower Remedies: Form and Function,
‘Bach carried in himself the vibratory
pattern of the Impatiens mental state.
There was a natural resonance between Bach, the man, and Impatiens,
the plant. He recognized it.’ Bach then
went on to find the remedies from
flowers that resonated with the other
personality types he had categorized.
How are they
made?
Flower essences (or ‘remedies’ – the
terms are used interchangeably) are
the vibrational imprint, or energetic
pattern, of particular flowers or plants

We live in a society that dictates
how important physical beauty is.
Whether we are slim enough, pretty
enough, or match up to the standards
that are set by Hollywood: hair color,
styles of clothing, how much we
weigh, do we have wrinkles or grey
hair, what jewelry are we wearing
to go with what we are feeling? It
seems all around us we dress, look,
and go by what culture has brought
to our attention as what is ‘in style
or fashion’. This is a struggle which
I believe rests and sits deeply in the
hearts of all modern day women.
We have drifted away from the
importantance of grasping the most
significant aspect of why we’re here
on earth; to be happy, joyous and
free in the expression of whom and
what we really are. When we are
at peace and have arrived at the
serenity of acceptance of who we
are, there should be an exuberating
and exhilarating flow of it that shows
on our face and in our physical
expression of how we respond to life.
Our eyes should be sparkling with
vitality; we should have a permanent
smile on our faces. There should be
a glow that resonates what and how
we’re feeling. This is the foundation
of what should be going on in
our emotional makeup before we
become concerned with our physical
appearance. Are we at peace, happy,
content, and satisfied with our
lives and who we are? If we don’t
experience this core value of who
and what we are to ourselves, there
is no amount of money, makeup or
physical things that can give us the

feeling on the inside. Where are our
self-love, self-worth, and self-respect
registering in the importance of how
we live our lives?
Do we have enough self-respect
to not allow people, friends and
love ones to abuse us? Do we love
ourselves enough to place boundaries
up where they’re needed? Because
we teach people how to treat us. And
ultimately if we don’t know how to
love ourselves, we are incapable of
being able to love others.
I have been spending time meditating
on the second commandment which
clearly says ‘we are to love our
neighbor as ourselves.’ But if we are
at a loss on ‘what’ loving ourselves
means, we aren’t capable of loving
another person. As I have grown to
love and respect myself, the capacity
and ability to love my friends and
loved ones has grown also. When we
intimately come to this inner core of
peace, serenity, and beauty within
ourselves, it shows on the outside.
Our insides finally match the outside.
We are told that we are ‘pretty,
glowing, rich in substance, and
exceedingly beautiful’. It takes more
work to take care of our souls than it
does our physical appearances. Ten
times out of ten, if we feel good on
the inside, we are more willing to take
care of the outside.
Our behavior reflects what we are
truly feeling. How do we respond
to negative and stressful situations?
What do we do when we are faced
with complications and uncertainty?
Do we collapse or lash out? Do we

become reclusive and unreasonable?
What is our initial reaction to life
when we can’t cope? Do we act out
and do things that ultimately hurt
us? Over eating, drinking, shopping,

Walking, praying, reaching out to
a loved one are new behaviors that
help me teach myself that I love
myself and don’t want to hurt or
sabotage what’s important to my core
value of my self-love. I have been told
by childhood friends that I’m more
beautiful now at 54 than they have
ever seen me….. I know I‘m on the
right track!

In the movie version of Cinderella, the
Prince asks, “Do I love you because
you’re beautiful, or are you beautiful
because I love you?” He continues,
“Do I want you because you’re wonderful, or are you wonderful because
I want you?” Cinderella asked the
same of him. Both characters recognized the dimensions of beauty. Aside
from what each lover saw when they
looked at the other, they saw signs of
inner beauty.
Right after the Oscars beauty is a hot
topic, as the stars were on display at
their glamorous best with 37 million
of us watching the broadcast. The
Hollywood brand of glamour has
come to help define beauty in our
society. Even if you don’t care about
movie stars, you may react to how
they look. The question is, however,
“Is physical beauty enough?”
Without judging anyone who happens to be gorgeous and famous, you
may wonder about the truth of the old
cliché “beauty is only skin deep.” Do
people who are beautiful always exhibit qualities you want to see in your
friends or in yourself? Do they live
happier lives? Based on the scandals,
the divorces, the bad behavior reported in the media, your answer would
probably be “no” on both counts.
When we approach the subject of inner beauty, most of us freely admit
that externals are not enough. Just because you have a pretty face does not
mean you are beautiful on the inside.
However, what is internal goes out.
A kind person who is not necessarily
beautiful externally, can appear more
attractive. An ill-tempered beauty
won’t seem kind just because of how
she looks!
Fortunately, you don’t have to make
a choice between being attractive
and being the type of caring, generous, goal-directed person you strive
to be. Attending to your body and
your appearance can actually affect
how you feel about yourself. Feeling
that you look your best can give you
confidence and self esteem. As you
apply the creams and the makeup to
enhance your outward appearance,
remember to work on your inner
qualities.
So, what are the aspects of inner
beauty and how do you achieve it?

1. First, you need to define the concept. What are the characteristics you
want in yourself? You may see your
“best you” as non-judgmental, willing to help others, and generous. Or
you may value honesty, self-direction,
and enthusiasm. Once you have defined what you value, strive to cultivate those characteristics in yourself
so you become more like the person
you want to be every day.
2. As you are becoming that person,
learn to value yourself as someone
who is successful. Like yourself. Empower yourself. See your own true
beauty. Just like you might look approvingly in the mirror when you
know you’re looking good, give yourself permission to acknowledge and
embrace your unique beauty.
3. As we said before, what’s inside will
surface eventually. Ever try to wear a
mask? After a while, your face gets
hot and off it comes. It’s hard to project that you are someone you aren’t
for very long. While you are working
on the good qualities you want to see
in yourself, be conscious of how you
come across to other people. Aim to
be a positive force that sees the good
in others and acknowledges them,
versus someone who adds an element
of negativity to the room.
4. Look for the beauty in others, and
whether you think you see it or not,
embrace and promote it. Think back
to the Prince and Cinderella. If you

believe in the goodness of other people, you can influence them to be better people. In return, they will seem

5. As you work on yourself, don’t forget to give back. If you have a spouse
and children at home, start the giving
at home and enjoy it. Reach out and
do something for others. Do more
than you are paid for at work. Mother
Theresa may never have won a beauty contest, but she enriched the lives
of others.

Karen Girardo, Entrepreneur

When she and her son began falling
victim to a variety of illnesses, compromised by the exposure to toxins in
household products, Karen Girardo
decided that enough was enough.
After years of searching relentlessly
and failing to find a line of holistic
products to meet her needs, Girardo
determined to open her own business. With more than 20 years of experience in the corporate world, she
was ready to use her research and
connections within the holistic community to bring New Hampshire a
line of naturally derived products—
products that worked.
“It was extremely challenging to find
products that were truly natural,”
said Girardo, who opened her first
retail location in Amherst, N.H. 3 1⁄2
years ago. The business owner spent
a number of years in banking, new
product development, and marketing, to which she credits her success
today.
“That’s really where I gleaned a lot of
my background,” she said.
Girardo began Just Naturals & Co.
from her Bedford, N.H. home nearly
six years ago and in 2010, moved to a
permanent location in Bedford.
“From the time I started this business
we have made five
different
moves,”
she said. “We went
from running a
business out of my
home, to a small
spot in Salzburg
(Square), to a bigger spot in Salzburg
to an even bigger
spot, to here.” The
many
transitions
have been one of the
greatest challenges
for the entrepreneur. But it has also
lead to some of her
greatest successes.
“The fact that we
have grown considerably each and
every year since we
started—even in a
down economy—
has been very notable,” she said. “We
are also starting to bring in holistic
practitioners such as massage, Reiki,
a number of different of healing arts
that people are now practicing on a
part time basis in our therapy room.”
Girardo, both a wife and a mother to
a 17-year-old son, says the key to her
success is balance.
“It is so easy to kind of let the busi-

is always so much to be done, so the
biggest challenge is keeping myself
in check so I have a nice balance between my personal life and my work

for that really shaped and formulated the way that I run the business today,” she said. “I learned a lot

the foresight to look and understand
what the business needs, and being
creative and finding ways to bring
those needs into the business.”

practitioner, was also instrumental in
guiding her in the healing arts and in
the natural direction over the course
of many years.

have an amazing team of co-workers.

As Girardo was putting the holistic,

she often looked to other women in
the field. Whether she needed guidance or hard advice, Girardo said she
was impressed by the outpouring
of support from women she hardly
knew.
“You are part of all that you have
met,” she said. “No one or any situation is perfect, but you take the best
of what you have learned over the
years and work it into something that
is you.”
Since establishing her line of natural
products, Girardo has seen more of
her ideas and concepts come to life.

As a young girl, Jill Cartwright
watched her father climb the ladder of success. Having worked with
the same company for 38 years as a
nuclear engineer, Cartwright knew
what it took to be successful; however, she had not been exposed to entrepreneurial ventures or non-corporate
enterprises.
Cartwright enrolled at Duke University as an undergraduate student
to pursue environmental law and
regulation policy with the drive to
“save the world and every tree in it.”
Though it was initially what she had
set out to do, the eager student was
disappointed by the politics of it all.
“It really is a bureaucracy,” she said. “I
became frustrated that jobs I was doing as an intern I couldn’t be hired for

up my sleeves and figuring out how
to make it happen.”
The experience she gained from the
opportunity gave her a “thing” for
marketing and strategizing images
and words to make a product sell.
But after a number of years in the corporate world, Cartwright realized the
environment wasn’t a good fit.
“I was selling products that I didn’t
necessarily believe in, or I didn’t
agree with the way they were being
positioned,” she said. “I decided that
I wanted to make a go of starting my
own business and creating products
that I felt good about and that were
having a good impact on people’s
lives.”
And then the Go GaGa Bag happened—a fully functional, stylish and
ergonomic baby bag for moms on the
go. What started as a sketch on the
back of a cocktail napkin, erupted
into a global name with more than
200 boutiques and online retailers
selling her products.

Since launching the line in 2007, Cartwright has attracted a Hollywood following, moved her warehouse from
her third-floor apartment to a facility
just north of Seattle, and has worked
with designers of the highest caliber.
The idea for a baby bag came forward when she learned the plight of
many of her friends who were new to
parenting.
She often heard her friends say things
like: “One day I was carrying a Louise Vuitton bag and now I’m carrying this denim Winnie the Pooh bag
around filled with diapers.” The loss
of self, in combination with the lack
of style and functionality in parenting
products, gave Cartwright the idea
for a multi-purpose product that parents would enjoy carrying.
“A lot of these folks were actually
getting hurt,” Cartwright said of the
products and bags parents had been
using. “The products are geared to
the safety of the child, but without
regard to the safety of the caregiver.”
Cartwright investigated these stories
through the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a database
that catalogs every hospital emergency visit involving an injury associated
with consumer products. According
to Cartwright, parents were suffering
from hearing loss, dislocated shoulders, torn ACLs, and carpal tunnel
syndrome, simply by using products
designed specifically for the safety of
the child without regard to the needs
of the parent.
“If I could create a really stylish bag
that would be durable and safe for

“That’s one of the things that I love
most about what I do,” Cartwright
says. “Our products have really
struck a chord with people and they
have really have made our products
their own.”
Though the journey has been worthwhile, it has had of a number of ups
and downs. Just last year, Cartwright
began paying herself—a mere $1,000
per month. Prior to that, she went unpaid, relying on credit card purchases
and scaling back her living expenses.
“I know where you can get 10 packs
of Ramen Noodles for $3,” she said.
“I knew it was going to be hard, but
I didn’t know it was going to be that
hard for that long.”
The entrepreneur continued to press
forward though, eventually hauling over 3,000 bags up three flights
of stairs to her apartment where she
initially housed her products. What is
her one piece of advice? Rent a first
floor apartment.
All joking aside though, she does recommend that individuals pace themselves when starting a new business.
The first 18 months of launching Go
GaGa, Cartwright was relentless—
until she landed in the hospital.
“I worked myself to the point that I
landed in the hospital,” she said. “I
was really lucky; it was nothing too
severe, but it was a good wake-up
call—I needed to go about this in a
way that was more sustainable financially, emotionally, and physically.”
Since her bout in the hospital, Cartwright has learned to seek advice
from the professionals around her.
“It really took me a while to look to
other people and to have the confidence to build those relationships and
realize that they wanted to help, that
it wasn’t an imposition,” she said. She
now has a network of professionals
and CEOs to which she turns to for
advice and direction.
Starting this business on her own
has both enlightened Cartwright and
challenged her as well. A perfectionist through and through, she says that
she often is so focused on where she
wants to be that she forgets where she
came from.
For Cartwright, making a mistake is
often difficult to cope with as she sees
it as a personal reflection or as if she is
letting down the company.
But she holds onto the advice of her
father: if you aren’t making mistakes,
than you aren’t making enough decisions. It’s something she has always
clung to and will continue to fall back
on during the challenging moments
of entrepreneurship.
“Something that my parents always
taught me is that you really can do
anything that you want to, you just
have to break it down into small
pieces,” she said. “Be honest with
yourself and to be realistic. The biggest challenge for women facing an
entrepreneurial opportunity is being
honest with themselves. Understand
your strengths and your weaknesses.
I think that’s really hard for women
because we don’t want to be seen as
(weak); we take great pride in doing
it all, but we can become our biggest
obstacle.”
Cartwright is a living testimony that
dreams are possible. In June 2009, the
company created a firm foundation
in one market, and has in turn, grown
substantially. This year, she will be
venturing further into the global market and making “Go GaGa” a household name.
“I am not a mom-prenuer, I have
never had kids, and I’m single,” Cartwright said laughing, “I like to think
I have a maternal instinct, but the fact
that I am in this industry is an oxymoron.”
It just goes to show that all you need
is a whole lot of drive, a willingness
to learn, and little bit of humor to
make an idea go from cocktail napkin
to diaper bag.

I Need My Sleep!

You used to love crawling into your
bed after a hard day’s work and sleeping like a baby; but, not anymore.
Actually you have no trouble falling
asleep; in fact you can barely stay
awake past 9pm. It’s staying asleep
that’s the problem. At about 2 or 3am
you wake up and that’s it; you’re
awake for the rest of the night.
If the above scenario sounds like you,
you are probably a woman and you
have probably gone through menopause.
Research has looked at the relationship between sleep and aging, and
experts find that individuals who
sleep an average of 7 to 9 hours a
night have the longest life expectancy.
Basically we are designed to spend a
third of our lives sound asleep. Sadly,
however, nearly half of us are not getting enough sleep, and this can lead
to attention and memory problems,
muscle soreness, and can exacerbate
psychological stress.
There are several contributing factors to why older adults tend to have
trouble sleeping. Many older adults
take medications that can affect sleep
habits. Stress, depression and anxiety
are other things that can play a role
in sleep patterns. A sedentary lifestyle
and illness also can contribute to poor
sleep habits.
While over-the-counter sleep aids can
help for short-term problems, many
experts have agreed that a better solution is to incorporate lifestyle changes
to help you sleep better. Some of the
following suggestions have proven
helpful in getting a better night’s
sleep:
Change your sleep schedule – If you
find you are falling asleep earlier,
allow yourself to do just that. Don’t
fight your new natural patterns. Also
avoid napping in the middle of the
day. this will make you less tired during the night.

Relax before bed, and incorporate
some relaxing rituals – drink warm
milk or non-caffeinated tea, listen to

Change your eating and drinking
habits – If you are hungry at night after dinner, eat only a light snack. Also,
try to eliminate caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and excess sugars in your diet.

the 29.2 million family members in
the U.S. providing personal care to an
elder relative? Almost 80% of people
that are receiving their long-term care
at home depend exclusively on family and friends for their care needs.
If the services provided by families
were replaced with paid services, it
would cost an estimated $257 billion
annually.
Caregivers are often overwhelmed
with their responsibilities and face
challenges of being burnt out, stressed,
and overwhelmed. Frustration, guilt
and financial limitations can add to
the stress. Up to 50% of caregivers
report depression and many are at
greater risk for high blood pressure,
cardiovascular disease, elevated insulin levels, and an impaired immune

Business Card Basics

Most business owners seem to treat
business cards as an afterthought.
They hand them out hoping they are
kept in mind for at least a few days.
But, secretly, they suspect that the
cards are just tossed out anyway...
Why bother with them then?
In fact, business cards are key to an
overall marketing strategy. Make
them a powerful walking mini billboard for you. On the front, your
name, business name, tag line if you
have one, and telephone number are
important…but, if you don’t have
your picture there also, you are really
reducing your card’s effectiveness.
People only buy from someone they
“know like and trust.” Your business
card should support that goal. For example, at the next networking event
you meet someone who is perfect for
your business. You hand her your
card (with your picture) and agree to
keep in touch.
When you follow up the one thing
she will remember will be your face
because of your picture. It will be easy
for her to say, “Oh I remember her…”
The “know, like, and trust” factor
created in the first meeting is carried
through. If the picture was not there,
she might not remember who you are.
Make sure your logo doesn’t overwhelm your contact information either. Making cards such a work of art
that no one can read them is counterproductive. Also ensure that the
font size is readable by most people. I
have received some cards where I had
to use a microscope to see the phone
number.
Always include your mailing address. (If you do not want to give that
out, get a postbox.) Also include your
email address, website address, and
all the major social media sites you
are a member of. You want to make
it possible for anyone who wants to
connect with you able to so as easily
as possible.
Now the back side… I turn so many
cards over and I see blank space. What
a waste. The backside is the most important side of your business card,
believe it or not. I actually got one of
my best customers on the spot when
I handed her my card. She immediately turned it over, read my “call to
action” statement written there and
said “I need that!” She signed up for
my biggest program the next day.
The “call to action” statement gives
your potential customer a strong inducement to contact you immediately. It should be in the form of a question that restates the major struggle
that you are an expert in solving. The
statement should be followed by all
your direct contact information. For
example: “Are you worried about
‘this major problem’ and need to fix
it right now? Then call me at ‘phone
number’ or email me at ‘email address’ or go to my website ‘www.mywebsite.com’ for more information on
how you can get help.”
Even though you have to put a lot of
information on the back of your card,
make sure there is still some white
space below for people to write in.
Do not make the backside a color or
glossy for the same reason. Glossy no
longer signals quality anymore. You

stock than paying the price for a shiny
thin card. People will want to write information about you on your card and
will do so on both sides.

well-being. So pay attention to what makes you feel sluggish and bloated. Those foods are usually harder for your
body to digest, causing food to not be broken down properly. If this happens, you become tired and your skin looks
the way you feel. So swap out the refined sugars and stock
up on some salmon, blueberries, carrots, and green tea to
give your skin that youthful glow.
6. Skiing. Okay, I just wanted to get your attention. I don’t
just mean skiing, I mean snowboarding, cross country skiing, sledding, snow tubing, skating, and walking outside.

And finally, facial implants are an option for women looking for the most permanent treatment available.
ACNE:
Though often considered a “teen disease,” acne can follow
men and women well into adulthood. Yes, hormones have
a bit to do with it which may cause excess oil to form on the
surface of the skin, but acne is primarily caused by clogged
pores. Each pore contains a hair and an oil gland meant to
hydrate the face and remove old skin cells, but when they
produce too much oil, they become blocked. This produces
swelling and inflammation causing red bumps to form.
The most natural response to acne is to cleanse often. But
this can actually exacerbate the problem because the pH
levels of the skin are thrown off balance. Cleansing is imperative, but don’t overdo it. Use a mild, non-drying soap
product one to two times a day and avoid over exfoliation
which can irritate the skin. Keep exfoliation to a minimum:
one to two times per week. Since oil forms over the rest of
your skin, avoid touching and rubbing your face with your
hands. Taking vitamins and minerals that have antioxidant
benefits will help detox the skin and ward off inflammation. And finally, use a spot treatment for problematic areas or for individual breakouts with a product containing
benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

Professional options include chemical peels, laser treatments, light treatments, and photodynamic therapy. A
health care provider may discuss further treatment and
stronger medication if breakouts are still a problem.
While we’re on the topic, let’s address some of those common myths:
1. Myth: Popping pimples make them go away.
Fact: Though it may, temporarily, make a pimple less noticeable, the action of popping a pimple pushes bacteria
further into the pore. Dab on some benzoyl peroxide to dry
it out instead.
2. Myth: Wearing makeup makes acne worse.
Fact: Today, there are cosmetic products labeled noncomedogenic or nonacnegenic, which prevent acne. Some
concealers even contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid,
which help to fight acne. You don’t have to forego wearing
makeup, just make sure you choose the right products.
3. Myth: Acne is caused by poor hygiene.
Fact: In a word? False.
4. Myth: Acne is caused by certain foods.
Fact: There is not enough scientific evidence that there is a
connection between food and diet. However, a deficiency
of riboflavin—found in meat, eggs and green vegetables—
can cause the skin to produce excess oil.

harsh gray? It can be quite a predicament. A good hair stylist will know that gray hair is notoriously more difficult

get older, the pigment cells in the hair follicle slowly fade away. With less melanin
in each strand of hair, it is replaced with
a more transparent color such as gray or
white or silver. With fewer and fewer pigment cells to create melanin, your hair will

Otherwise known as “spider veins,” the purple-colored
veins often show up on the inner and outer thighs. And
yes, they are about as thrilling as a toothache. Varicose
veins are often the result of pregnancy, hormone changes,
or genetic makeup and are nothing more than enlarged
veins. That being said, there is not much that can be done
to prevent them; however, there are a few treatment options to erase them.
Most women have them—the small, unsightly dimples
that form on the upper part of the legs. Ah yes, the lovely
cottage cheese mess that can be kept undercover most of
the winter, but must make its appearance once beach season arrives.
Sclerotherapy is a treatment that shrinks the veins, often
hailed as the most effective treatment by some doctors and
is usually a very quick procedure: a solution is injected
directly into the vein which irritates the lining of the blood
vessel causing the blood to eventually clot. Over time, the
vessel forms into scar tissue that eventually fades away.
Surface laser treatments can often treat varicose veins by
sending strong bursts of light through the skin and onto
the vein. This causes the vein to disappear in time; however, it often takes two to five treatments for it to be effective.
Though there is no injection site, the laser can be painful
for many patients.
Radiofrequency and surgery are often processes used on
patients with more severe cases and deeper veins.
Exercising and a healthy diet can contribute to prevention.

Teeth shift around for a number of reasons: grinding, age,
genetics, removing teeth, cavities, and decay. But there are

braces are almost a standard in orthodontic treatment. If
there is severe misalignment, traditional, metal brackets
connected with flexible wire is the best treatment. Though
there is initial soreness and discomfort, it is the best way
to steadily correct the positioning of your teeth. Ceramic
braces are also an option for those who do not like the cosmetic look of metal. However, you should take into consideration that although they work like traditional braces,
they are less durable and often take longer to see results.
4. Pick the Right Lipstick Shade: Certain lipstick shades

Is Loosing Weight a Challenge
for You? It is for ME.

Most of us have seen the Nutri System commercials featuring Jennifer Hudson and
Valerie Bertinelli. It looks
so easy to go from heavy to
looking fabulous. We don’t
see the personal, individual
struggles that they undergo
in their journey. We just see
the fantastic results. I know for myself that it is so frustrating. When the weight doesn’t come off quick enough
or I slide off the ‘diet wagon’ I really beat myself up and
think I’m the only one who has these problems. I’m sure
I’m really not, but it feels that way in the moment. When
I used to go to Weight Watchers, I would dread the scale
and when the results were not positive, there was no one
there to really make me feel any more positive. I guess
the atmosphere just wasn’t conducive for me. What I’ve
experienced in Dr. Warren’s office is so different. Everyone in the office works together with one goal in mind
and the phrase that I think best describes this is “Positive
Reinforcement.”
At Dr. Warren’s they work very hard to circumvent problems before they happen and to question me to determine
what the issues were each month. They share suggestions
that make me look at things differently, definitely not beat
up on myself, and share ideas that can help in the future.
The last three months have been unusually crazy for me
with situations that I had not realized would be a problem for my diet. I took part in four separate expos, each
of which created problems with my diet. Most shared the
problem of not having access to good, protein enriched
food, and also not having the time to eat. When you’re
on your feet all day or all afternoon greeting people, it’s
difficult to find time to eat. I did bring South Beach bars
which are my mainstay for high protein, low carbohydrate snacks, but a couple of bars don’t really provide
the energy to stand on your feet all day. Being tired and
stressed are often triggers for overeating or eating those
things (for me carbs) that really are not conducive to losing weight.
Another challenge has been attending networking meet-

ings which involve meals. Dr. Warren is very good about
providing suggestions and in a perfect world, these would
also provide solutions. However, often food selections at
such meetings are limited, and offering pork, salads with
rich dressings to eat, and amazing desserts, with a totally
delicious dessert placed right in front of my face—chocolate no less. Could I say take it away? NO, but I did try to
leave some on the plate and succeeded.
So I cannot speak for Valerie Bertinelli or Jennifer Hudson. Perhaps they did not suffer any challenges. Certainly
they can afford personal trainers and the time to spend
hours exercising. For me each day is a challenge; most
of them are met with success but some are not and I am
grateful that the people I work with at Physicians Healthy
Weight Center provide an atmosphere of support and
tons of ideas to make the next month easier. Without that
support — I know I would not have lost so much weight.
And the count continues with the weight (and clothing
sizes) dropping.

Cinderella Makeover - 2011

Everyone has a story of who they are.
They tell this story and believe this story based on their experiences. Many
also believe that their story defines
them or confines them to repeat their
story over and over again. Sierra could
have believed her past would determine her future, and yet she chose to write a new story.
Sierra had no idea that when she began to design a life
that was rooted in love for herself and her children, that
she would be the inspiration for several women who did
not know each other to gather together in a collective effort of love.
That is the magic of planting seeds of intention. When
you water and fertilized them, the garden that grows is
reflective of those thoughts and energy. Sierra’s garden
includes an unlikely support system, new job, another
level of education, children who are blossoming like their
mother, and a makeover. Here’s the story that Sierra has
begun to create.
About a year ago, Sierra went to Marguerite’s Place in
Nashua, NH where she met with Patty Joseph, one of the
case managers for the women who come there for support in reaching their goals. Marguerite’s Place offers
safe living arrangements, childcare, a structured environment, and support on many levels. You cannot show up
there with no goals and no means of income. The women
who are welcomed and nurtured there are motivated and
self-sufficient but in need of stability and reinforcement
while they are designing their new stories and creating a
stable life for themselves and their children.
Sierra is one such young woman. Her story began in
Vermont in a very unstructured and abusive family life.
She was bounced around between parents, stepparents,
grandparents and foster parents. At 16 she became pregnant. She stayed in school and graduated, living on her
own with the father of her child, and with no support
from her family. She ended this relationship after three
years of emotional abuse.
Sierra went into another relationship and in the fall of
2006 went to Nashua with this man. They had a son together. He also had a son from another woman, and Sierra took him in and is raising him as her own. Although
this relationship was initially positive, after several years
Sierra realized that it was not a healthy relationship. She
asked him to leave but it took him a year to do so, and
when he finally did, he took everything including the financial support, leaving his sons with Sierra.
On her own without warning left Sierra in a bind. She did
her best to keep it together and make it work, but in the
end she could not afford the rent and expenses and she
found herself without a home. This powerhouse had already gone back to school when her second son, Andrew,
was a year old and knew it was time to continue with
her education. That is when she heard about Marguerite’s
Place.
Patty Joseph says, “Sierra knew what she wanted, and
had already enrolled at Hesser College to become a medical assistant. She graduated with honors in nine months
and then pursued additional certification.” Marguerite’s
Place provided support to Sierra with an apartment,
childcare, occasional rides to school, as well as weekly
meetings to check in with her goals.
When Patty was asked to recommend a woman for this
makeover, she immediately thought of Sierra. “She does
everything for her children and never puts attention on
herself,” said Patty. Because her funds are so limited, all
money goes into providing the necessities of daily life for

Hair & Beauty Salon to complete
the makeover that began with
her clothes. She arrived with two
new outfits to showcase after her
hair and makeup is complete.
There is an excitement in the salon as several women
have come together to give of themselves to this
project and this amazing young woman.

Anita Poulin has fifteen years of experience as
a hair stylist and has been at Sheer Elegance for
nine years. She generously donated her time to
color, cut, and style Sierra’s beautiful long locks.
She used Schwarzkopf products, adding summer
blonde highlights, which added depth as well as
brightness around Sierra’s face, blending nicely
with her warm, medium brown hair color. Anita
explained, “The maintenance will be easy and she
won’t see strong roots as her hair grows.” She cut
several long layers into Sierra’s hair, taking only
a few inches from the length. She dried her hair
then flat ironed it straight, and the results were
stunning. Sierra loved it, and when I asked if she
would be able to maintain the style she told me,
“Yes, I dry my hair and style it for work.”

First Maria spackles the blemishes then uses
a brush to add a neutral liquid foundation by
Lancôme’. For eye color, Maria applied purple
to the lids and dotted on silver to soften the effect. Rather than using pencil, she dipped an
artist signature brush into water, and then used
the same purple shadow color to line the lash
line. It produced a much softer effect. She applied light strokes using a glimmer stick from
Avon under the eye. Maria likes to use this because it is soft and forgiving with eye tissue

color as long as you stick with your
tone and can match it to your clothes.
“Tap the brush on your hand to get
out excess before applying. Begin in
the center of the cheek under the pupil of your eye, and feather outward,”
Maria explained as she demonstrated
on Sierra’s lovely face. To apply the
mascara, Maria first held the wand
vertically to get all the lashes, and
then horizontally.
Sierra does not like lipstick, so Maria used Maybelline Super Stay in
rosy mauve, letting the first coat dry,
then added the gloss. It was subtle
and finished the natural look perfectly. “Wow, it looks beautiful. It does n;t look
heavy,” Sierra exclaimed when her look was
revealed to her.

generously allowed her shop to be taken over by a bevy
of characters participating in this chapter of Sierra’s story, was busy with her clients, she was a visible part of
the whole scenario. My initial impression walking into
the salon located at 15 Congress Street in Nashua, NH
(off Northeastern Blvd, and next to Citizens Bank) was,
“Wow. The energy in here is great! It is open, bright, inviting, approachable, and very welcoming.” My first impression was confirmed throughout the entire morning.
Guylian and the three stylists who work there all agree
that they want to contribute to Marguerite’s Place. Patty
Joseph, Sierra’s case manager, often brings the moms and
their children into the salon for haircuts. As Guylian expressed, “when your hair looks good, you feel good, and
this helps with their confidence for interviews. After 24
years in the business I still love what I do!”
Sierra could not have known when she decided to create
a new story for her life and especially for her children,
that she would be experiencing the generosity, creativity,
and inspiration from so many characters, and yet we all
agreed there was no where else we would have wanted to
be that day! Susan Caldwell expressed, “when you invest
in the right people the investment grows exponentially
and affects the world.”
Sharon Ward (sharonwardphotogrpahy.com) was on hand
all day capturing the visual story of Sierra’s makeover.
With the completed look, she took several shots from all
angles of Sierra until she finally relaxed. Sierra is not one
for having the attention on her, so she was completely
outside her comfort zone having a camera snapping and
flashing, all eyes on her.
Last year, another young woman from Marguerite’s Place
was the recipient of the makeover. I asked Patty how she
was doing and it was so gratifying to hear that she is doing well. “Stacy graduated from the program and is now
living in one of the condos, saving money for her own
home. She is still working at her job of nine years, and
doing very well and doing it on her own.”
Sharon was at ease standing on chairs to take some pictures from a higher vantage point. “Using a bounce flash
adds full and subtle light, although my preference is to
use the ambient lighting in its natural environment,”
Sharon explained as she clicked away capturing Sierra in
several expressions.
After two years of living in Marguerite’s Place apartments, the women graduate, yet those who are truly motivated and financially capable can rent 1 of 10 condos for
5 years. This gives them time to put some solid things in
place for their families – most are saving for a home of
their own.
Sierra changed into an outfit of black pants with a black
cardigan worn over a lovely deep purple and black
blouse edged in black. Again, the outfit was completed
with jewelry created by Wendy dePenasse, and Sharon
captured the look in several shots.
We all have no doubt that Sierra and her boys will be
following in this track. She started as an LNA, is now a
certified medical assistant, and would love to earn her
bachelor’s degree to be an RN. Ideally, her dream is to
be a Nurse Practitioner and own her own home. In the
meantime, all her spare time is spent with her boys, Taylib – 3 years old, Andrew – 8 years old, and Xavyer – 9

years old. Taylib and Xavyer’s father has begun to be a presence and some help
in their lives – a testament, no doubt, to the power of Sierra’s love.

crafts projects too. “In the nice weather, we play ball and go to the park. I
now have weekends off from work,
and I love it because I have more
time with my kids,” Sierra beams. “I
wouldn’t be where I am without Marguerite’s Place,” she tells me appreciatively. Marguerite’s Place supports
those who support themselves, and no
doubt it was Sierra’s determination to
write her own script that brought that
support in view
I asked Sierra what she thought her
sons would think of her new look, and
she beamed, “My older son will be
very excited! He always tells me I am
beautiful.” Her son is absolutely right
and I am sure as do all of that meet Sierra, that beauty runs very deep. A.

Hunger Triggers Part 3: The Diet Food Effect

This is part #3 of Dr. Warren’s
answers for Allure Magazine’s
“Hunger Triggers” April, 2010 article.
Studies show that “lite” or “low
cal” on the label can lead to people overeating these items, probably because they are fooling
themselves into thinking these are
“free” foods they can eat in unlimited quantities. It’s important
to look at the calories, and very
importantly the PORTION SIZE
on the nutrition label, which can be deceptively small for
many items. People can easily fool themselves into thinking they are eating 50 calories of something, when they
may actually be eating a 200 calorie portion size. A few
mistakes like this really add up by the end of the day.
People often make the same mistakes with “healthy” restaurant meals such as salads or wraps. Certain salad items
and many “healthy” wraps are very high calorie, sometimes very high in saturated fat, and may be very high in
refined carbohydrates. Caesar salad can have 600 calories
if it is covered with buttered croutons and high-fat dressing. Make it a Chicken Caesar Salad Wrap, and it could be
even worse - 1200 calories, depending on how it’s made.
People should check the calories, which they can often do
at home ahead of time by looking up a menu of a particular
restaurant online. They can use websites of chain restaurants, or a calorie counting website such as Calorie King,
Sparkpeople, Dotti’s Weight Loss Zone (great for restaurants), or The Daily Plate. They should also plan ahead; if
they go often to a certain type of restaurant, say Mexican,
Italian, or Indian, using one of the websites to get an idea
of the best choices ahead of time lets them go in knowing
pretty much what they are going to do. It can give people a
sense of control; knowledge is power.
Hunger Triggers Part 4: Can Exercise Make You Hungry?
The Gym Effect This is part #4 of Dr. Warren’s answers for
Allure Magazine’s “Hunger Triggers” April, 2010 article.
Exercise is great for us - it really is a “magic pill.” We know
that exercise burns calories, keeps our bodies healthy and
fit, slows the aging process, and is extremely important
during weight loss (to help keep metabolism and muscle
mass high) and for weight maintenance (over 90% of people who *keep* weight off long term exercise almost every

day.) So given all these benefits, how could exercise work
against us? The simple answer: if we do not plan carefully,
exercise can lead to overeating.
How can exercise lead to overeating?
1) People may give themselves permission to overeat after
a gym workout, thinking they’ve “earned it.” They forget
that walking on a treadmill only burns about 70 calories
a mile (a little more than one Oreo cookie). Exercise machines at the gym are notorious for reporting that you’ve
burned *more* calories than you actually have - don’t believe them! To burn off 500 calories on the treadmill, you’d
have to walk about 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 miles! People unfortunately often eat more than they’ve burned off, and don’t
realize it. Don’t ruin a good workout with a bag of chips
afterwards!
2) Really intense workouts can lead to increased appetite
if you don’t plan ahead. It is important to have a snack
(containing protein and carbohydrates) 1-4 hours *before*
a workout, so you are not “starving.” A snack will help
prevent you from becoming “hypoglycemic” (having low
blood sugar) during the workout, so you’ll feel better and
have a more effective session.
After an intense workout, it is a good idea to have another
small, balanced snack (containing both protein and carbohydrate), for two reasons. First, you need some carbohydrate to “restock” your muscles with glycogen (stored
energy in your muscles). You need this so you’ll have a
good workout tomorrow! It is also important to have some
protein, so your muscles can repair the tiny tears that occur
during a workout - this is how you build muscle.
Besides the muscle benefits, a balanced snack will also help
calm your appetite later. If you skip it, you will feel ravenously hungry. But remember - watch the calories, so you
don’t eat too much of a good thing!

Girl Meets Bra, the Saga of Ill Fit

The classic girl meets bra story: One day
you outgrew a training bra and put on a
bra that seemed to fit. As an impressionable
young woman, you read that tag and carried
on through life thinking “This is my size, I
am a 36C.”
You may have heard this before but there is more than an
80% chance that your bra size is incorrect and professional
bra sizing may not be the easy answer. Each bra company’s
sizes run differently and finding a brassiere expert well
trained enough to know this (especially in a department
store or one of the bra giant retailers) is next to impossible.
After learning the ins and outs of bras, I was shocked to
find that I not only had been wearing the wrong bra but my
real standard size doesn’t exist in the United States. This
is not uncommon and can be seriously frustrating. I have
met with countless women who have been turned away
from the go-to bra stores. Some went home, and in their
anguished state, chopped up two bras and sewed them together to create “frankenbras.” Others have tried to learn
enough Japanese so they could order a bra from a country
that actually carries their size. However, most give up.
There is no need to go to extremes, you are not alone. Poor
bra fit happens to women of all sizes and shapes as the
combinations of breast, back, shoulder, and ribcage dimensions are endless and standard sizing cannot account for
every permutation. Yet all women are lumped into a few
size categories that assume “if your breasts are this big,
your shoulders and ribcage are this big.”
The key is to focus on what a bra is doing on your body, not
what the tag says. Ask yourself these questions and find
out if your bra is fitting like it should:
-Does the back of your bra ride up or move when
you move?
The back should be horizontal to the floor and stay in
place, at the smallest part of your back.
-Can you pull the back of your bra out more than 2”?
You shouldn’t have any more give than that.
-Does the underwire on your side
sit in the spot exactly where your
breast tissue ends
and your ribcage
starts?
This is a crucial and
rarely
addressed
point of fit. You
shouldn’t be able to
feel the underwire.
-Do your straps
dig into your
shoulders?
This generally means
that your band is too big. It’s the band that should be holding your girls up, not your straps.

-Does the bridge (the piece between your breasts) sit flat
against your breast bone?
This is a hallmark of a good fit.
A well-built bra is like a well-built building. There has to
be a perfect combination of support points to maintain
suspension. Add on the task of finding comfort with good
structure, and good bra fit becomes a momentous challenge — but a rewarding one when you do succeed.
Bras are an article of clothing worth investing a bit of time
and money into because a great fitting bra not only makes
your clothes look better and improves posture, it can help
circulation and remedy everyday aches and pains. Oh, and
did I mention it can make you look 10 lbs. lighter? Maybe
it’s time to reevaluate what your bra is doing for you.

warming with bronzer. Focus your application of bronzer

Part 3 The Eyes:
Eye makeup can create the look of a surgical eye lift! Use four quick steps to
brighten your eyes.
1. Kriss applied the black curling mascara first. With mascara first in the lineup
you can easily clean up any messes before the rest of your eye artwork. Black
mascara opens the eyes regardless of hair color, power lashes are like a morning cup of coffee for your eyes. This curling lash formula gives a power lift to
the upper lash line.
2. Avoid bright colors or overly glittery eye shadows. Combine textures by
adding light reflecting mineral shadows to the lid to give the illusion of a more
open eye. Combine with natural matte shadows in the crease. Blending up
toward the brow bone for maximum lift.

3. Choose color liners to brighten tired eyes. Always apply more liner to the
top lash line to add lift to the eye area. A thin line on the bottom to enhance the appearance of lashes will make eyes look
bigger. Be careful not to create heavy liner on the bottom lash line which can create a drooping effect.
4. Dramatically change the appearance of the eye
area by creating a well-shaped and defined eyebrow.

Makeup application is a powerful transformational journey of beauty, self-confidence and
special effects that can turn back the wear and
tear of time. Women do not need to choose invasive procedures to get powerful results.

Pam has beautifully balanced features. The goal was to bring some
color into her complexion and to brighten up her eyes. Kriss used
“Kiss of Sun” tanning powder to sculpt and warm Pam’s complexion, with a dab of “spirit” blush on her apples to add glow
and lift. Her eyes were really opened by extra coats of “curling
lash mascara” in black and defined with marcasite gel eyeliner. A
subtle brow fill with “blonde” pencil gives the look of an eyelift!
Diva has divine bone structure. Makeup focus is on brightening eyes and finding the
perfect lip color to bring balance into her
look. We focused on creating a flawless glowing canvas with the “miracle canvas kit.”
Eyes were enhanced with the golden glow
of “heading south” eye shadow all over and
accented with “Spluge” in the crease. To top
off her look Diva is wearing “firefly” lipstick,
glossed over with “Ruby Slipper” to create
full and luscious lips!
