For financial fitness, develop a budget
FORT BLISS BUGLE • September 3, 2015 • 9B For financial fitness, develop a budget Karen’s Corner Special to the Fort Bliss Bugle Hello Fort Bliss spouses and friends! With all the talk shows, books, magazine articles, advice columns, and even infomercials about how to manage money, there’s one thing I know for certain: We don’t need another lecture. We’ve been inundated with the same conversation for years. Yet, many people are still living paycheck to paycheck, racking up credit card debt, and struggling to make ends meet with no plan for the future such as buying a home, car, vacation and sending children off to college. What we need is an action plan to accumulate wealth to assist us in achieving our financial goals. What makes me an expert, you ask? In brief, years ago when I first entered the work force and started out on my own, I received the shock of my life when I realized that after paying my rent, car note, and a few other small bills, I only had $6 to my name until the next month’s payday. I’ll share more details of those dark days another time. For now, let’s suffice it to say I had to figure out how to handle money (or rather my lack of money) in a hurry. The action plan that follows is how I did it. I went from beyond broke to accumulating wealth in 36 months. If you are struggling, or know someone who is, give this plan a try. I hope it helps. I also hope you will leave comments, tweak my plan and add any ideas I might have missed. Step one: Make a realistic budget and stick to it. Let’s look at the most important truth we all should live by when it comes to money. Notice, I said, “live by,” not just “know or understand.” Live by it. This simple yet imperative truth is: Spend less than you earn. Whether you earn $1,200 per month (or less, as I did) or thousands more, you should not spend more than whatever you bring home after taxes. You can do it if you make a budget. Do you remember learning about Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the difference between wants and needs? Needs are the basic things in life we must have or we will die. We’re not talking about our cell phones here, people! We’re talking about things we would literally die without. Now stop grumbling. I get it. We love our phones and at a minimum would be inconvenienced without them, but again, that’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking survival. Don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you to get rid of your phones. That’s a personal call (no pun intended). Let’s move on. Get a piece of paper and write down how much you bring home after taxes at the top. Make a column on the left of the expenditures you have each month. Next, slide to the right and write the amount of the expenditure. Think about the basic physical survival needs: food, shelter, water, sleep and oxygen. These are the lowest level needs on Maslow’s hierarchy. They should be at the top of your list. It should look something like this: What we need is an action plan to accumulate wealth to assist us in achieving our financial goals. Sept. take home pay $1,200 Food$XXX Rent/Mortgage$XXX Water$XX Utilities$XX Transportation/Car payment $XXX $XX Auto insurance Childcare$XX Clothing$XX Cable$XX $XX Phone bill $XX Credit cards Total: $XXXX Once you have all of your expenditures listed, add them up. Your total should be less than your take-home amount. If you have at least $150 left over once all of your responsibilities are taken care of, you are ready to move to step two. Please note that’s a minimum amount in my opinion. If you have less, you must find somewhere to either cut back or bring in more money. I did both. The action for you to take this week is to sit down with your spouse and set a realistic budget. See what you can trim and how you can add on to your take home pay this week to create a surplus in your funds. Next week I will show you how I created a surplus. Then we’ll move on to step two together as I share what I did with the excess funds I created. See you back here next week! If you try this and have trouble, my friend, Ana Hernandez from Army Community Service, Bldg. 2494 Ricker Road, would love to help you. Don’t hesitate to make an appointment with her at 569-4227, option two. She runs the financial programs designed to assist Soldiers and spouses. Thank you to Hernandez for helping me get this discussion started. I’ve always wanted a forum to share my story with the hope of helping others. Thank you, too, to my uncle, Claude Wilson, for helping me word the steps. They are short, but sweet. Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of four articles on financial fitness. Fort Bliss Army Ten-Miler Team roster announced By Wendy Brown Fort Bliss Bugle Editor It’s official. The 16 runners who have been training together since May for the Fort Bliss Army Ten-Miler Team are now a team. The first tryout for the team was the Fort Bliss Ten-Miler Qualifier in May, but candidates could still make it on the team with a good time at the TenMiler in the Heat in August, said Brandon Gangstad, the team’s coach. A couple of runners did qualify, but because of previous engagements, could not run in the Oct. 11 Army Ten-Miler in Washington, D.C., so the roster remained the same, Gangstad said. This is the race’s 31st year, and it starts and ends at the Pentagon. Since May, the Soldiers have been training five, and often six, days a week to improve their times, Gangstad said. “Most of them have improved their times greatly since their first tryout,” Gangstad said. The runners meet at 5:30 a.m. weekdays to work on speed, strength and endurance, and often get together on Saturday mornings for long runs, Gangstad said. Two members of the team are also members of the Army Marathon Team, so for them, a long See TEAM Page 11B High Ropes Challenge Course Days: Take on the high ropes challenge course at the Soldier Activity Center Sept. 26 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost: $10 per person. Second Lt. Alana Bergstrom, assigned to 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, said Gangstad has helped her focus on her form and become more efficient. “I have great confidence that my time will have a significant increase at the Army TenMiler due to his training and my dedication,” Bergstrom said. Bergstrom said the only race she had run before the Ten-Miler Qualifier was a 5K, but she plans to continue running competitively. She looks forward to the race in October, she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing so many other Soldiers out there running on the capital. It should be an amazing experience,” Bergstrom said. Spc. Eden Kebede, assigned to William Beaumont Army Medical Center, said she also was not a competitive runner before making the team. “I enjoy running by itself, but when I found out that I could possibly make the team I decided to give it my best effort,” Kebede said. “So this will be my first competition.” Since joining the team, she has improved her speed and endurance, Kebede said, and has also learned how to pace herself. “I am looking forward to representing my unit and Fort Bliss at the (Army) Ten-Miler. I’m also excited to meet other Soldiers competing, and the overall experience,” Kebede said. Capt. Jes Barron, assigned to 16th Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, said he ran competitively when he was in college at the the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, and completed a few ultramarathons recreationally after graduating. He started competing again after arriving at here in January 2014. This will be his second time on the Fort Bliss team, and he finished third on the team last year with a time of 56 minutes, 21 seconds, Barron said. He finished 97th overall. Gangstad, who works as a civilian here as the installation’s troops schools manager, said he looks forward to working his team and is confident they’ll do well. Coming Soon Splash & Dog Parks!
