ANNUAL REPORT 2008 Making a difference …one life at a time. Longmont Humane Society 2008 Board of Directors Andy Fritz, President Michael Mundt, Vice President Heathe Cooper, Secretary Board Members: Jennifer Hargrove Matthew Rooney, DVM, MA, DACVS Laura Schafer Marilyn Uilk TO OUR SUPPORTERS I arrived at Longmont Humane Society in October amid interesting times indeed. An economic storm continued to brew, affecting every business and nonprofit, presenting unique challenges to animal shelters. As more families lost their homes to foreclosure, were laid off or had to downsize, many had to surrender beloved pets they could no longer care for. Our adoption numbers in 2008 increased slightly, but by year’s end surrenders were outstripping even that encouraging growth. Most shelters faced the same kind of difficulties, but LHS faced additional trials in a year of enormous transition. The state-of-the-art Longmont Humane Society Allen Center, completed in August after 15 months of construction, is nearly four times the size of the dome that served LHS for a quarter of a century. Our wonderful new facility allowed us to provide better care for more animals than ever. But providing that care cost more, as well. In addition, we had our first change in administration in more than a decade. But I am proud to say that our dedicated staff, volunteers and board of directors really showed their mettle during this time of upheaval. Everyone rallied and remained focused on our mission of caring for voiceless animals in need. We didn’t just maintain our excellent standard of animal care – we raised the bar. In fact, our adoption rate increased by 7 percent in the last year, and we are proud to report that our euthanasia rate decreased by more than 18 percent. And as we look into 2009, we’re not planning to stand still. We spent the final quarter of the year evaluating potential new programs that will better serve the pets and people of our community. Look for LHS to open the community’s first low-cost spay and neuter clinic for the public, expand its menu of dog training classes and open a satellite thrift store. We also plan to offer evening adoption hours for the first time; studies have shown that adoption rates increase when shelters stay open later. The past year’s many accomplishments and our bright future are possible thanks to your generous support. Together, we are saving more animals than ever. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Neil Trent Executive Director PROGRAMS & SERVICES Longmont Humane Society is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of animals. We provide temporary shelter to more than 5,000 animals every year: dogs, cats, small mammals and birds who are lost, abandoned or surrendered. Loving attention, nutritious food, meticulous health care and daily exercise are included in the high-quality care provided to each animal. We are open seven days a week. Pet Lost and Found LHS receives lost pets brought to the facility by private citizens and animal-control officers serving the City of Longmont, the towns of Frederick, Lyons, Mead, Platteville and Dacono, and northern Boulder County. Every effort is made to reunite these animals with their families. Pet Adoption The LHS adoption program seeks to place animals into permanent, caring homes. Each adoption includes temperament testing, spaying or neutering, a distemper vaccination, a veterinary examination, extensive care information, and discount on training classes for dogs. Adoption fees vary according to age and size (dogs only) of the animal. We offer reduced rates to seniors. Subsidized Spay and Neuter Services for the Public In January 2009, LHS plans to offer the community’s first dedicated low-cost spay-and-neuter clinic for the public. Flat fees for cat and dog spay and neuter procedures were developed through research of area clinic and shelter prices to ensure affordability. We also will provide vaccinations for clinic clients not current on their shots and rabies vaccinations to owners of impounded or stray animals that are not current. Foster Care Program We work with some 70 dedicated foster families and utilize our in-house foster-care department to provide care in their homes to incoming animals who would not thrive in a shelter environment. These pets are not yet ready for adoption due to illness, age or lack of socialization. Humane Education Through educational presentations and tours of the shelter, Longmont Humane Society increases community awareness regarding our mission, pet overpopulation, the joys and responsibilities of caring for a pet, the humane treatment of animals and the link between domestic violence and animal abuse. We also offer week-long Kids & Critters day camps for children ages 7-12 in the summer. Through our Paws to Listen program, LHS takes therapy-trained dogs into schools to serve as friendly, fun, non-judgmental reading companions for students. Canine Behavior Department Using the tools of a three-person behavior staff, trained volunteers and a separate kennel area, we provide concentrated training for dogs presenting issues such as resource guarding, on-leash reactivity and other behaviors that can reduce their chances of finding a new home. Many of these animals come to us after their owners have been informed by other facilities that their dogs are not adoptable. 2 Annual Report LHS Dog Training Classes Longmont Humane Society offers a broad menu of some 20 dog-training classes for humans and their companion dogs and puppies under the supervision of nationally renowned canine behavior expert Aimee Sadler. Classes include basic obedience, puppy classes, AKC Canine Good Citizen certification, on-leash reactivity work, agility and one-on-one training at the shelter or in clients’ homes. Information Services Through newsletters, brochures and news articles, Longmont Humane Society helps local citizens learn more about animals. Our lending library has a large collection of videos, magazines and books on pet care and training. Skilled shelter staff are available to answer questions regarding many specific pet concerns and the LHS Web site at www.longmonthumane.org offers extensive information about the humane society and a “virtual kennel” with photos of pets currently available for adoption. Volunteer Opportunities We work with more than 350 active volunteers, who assist us in every aspect of the work we do. Volunteers walk and train dogs, groom and socialize cats and small mammals, help with events, assist with adoptions and kennel cleaning, do administrative work and assist with our education programs. All volunteers must attend an orientation, offered monthly, and in the case of animal-care positions, must attend further training sessions. Pet Loss Support Longmont Humane Society offers support for people facing the death of a pet. We provide a gentle and dignified death for sick and elderly animals, cremation services and a pet cemetery. Our new building includes a quiet room for families of pets undergoing euthanasia. City Pet Licensing Longmont Humane Society contracts with the City of Longmont to provide licenses to all residents for dogs, cats and potbellied pigs. Safe Keep Program Longmont Humane Society offers temporary shelter for pets of families who are victims of domestic violence. Thrift Store The Longmont Humane Society Second Chance Thrift Store offers a wide variety of gently used household items, appliances, furniture, clothing, books and more for affordable prices. Proceeds from the thrift store benefit lost, abandoned and homeless animals at the shelter. MISSION, VISION STATEMENTS & OPERATING PRINCIPLES MISSION The mission of the Longmont Humane Society is to provide for the welfare of animals and to promote and nourish the fundamental bonds between people and animals. VISION STATEMENTS Envision our community when: • Every animal has a loving home with the medical care, training, shelter, human companionship and basic care they need. • All people have the opportunity to benefit from the love and companionship of animals. • All people have a heartfelt, lifelong commitment to their animals. • All citizens, whether they have animals or not, understand the importance of animal welfare. • The population of pets is maintained at an appropriate level. • Every lost pet is reunited with its family. • Laws and ordinances that protect animals and that strengthen the connection between people and animals are in place and enforced. OPERATING PRINCIPLES • Everything we do will be guided by our Mission Statement and Vision Statements. • We will seek out opportunities to enrich the lives of people in our community by promoting companionship with animals. • Every effort will be made to reunite stray animals with their companions or to place them in appropriate homes. • There will be no limits on an animal’s length of stay. • When euthanasia is unavoidable, it will always be performed in a humane way. Staff and volunteers will be trained to provide the highest standards of animal welfare. • LHS will always strive to have adequate resources and facilities to accomplish our mission. 4 Annual Report LHS FUNDRAISING 2008 Through a variety of fundraisers, we build relationships in the community and raise funds for the care of shelter animals. As soon as the dome was empty, crews from Golden Triangle Construction, Inc. sealed it off and began a complete renovation of the building that had been LHS’ home since 1984. Meanwhile, we were just learning how to use all that new space and learning the ins and outs of our new, state-of-the-art shelter. Dogs barked and cats meowed in spacious new kennels, while members of the public strolled open, airy, bright promenades as they viewed adoptable animals. Because the LHS Allen Center was carefully designed to function as a single, integrated facility, we had to be creative with our use of space while the dome was under renovation. But we were used to that: In our final days in the dome, we had kittens in the lunchroom, cats in the bathroom and birds lining hallways. In August, we were able to spread out and use the whole building, which allowed us to take better care of more animals and find permanent, loving homes for more than ever. In fact, adoptions were up by more than 7 percent for the year. Thanks to you and your generosity, LHS is fast becoming a model for what a progressive animal shelter can be. But we’re not standing still. We’re looking forward to an exciting 2009, including the launch of the community’s first dedicated, low-cost spay and neuter clinic, a new thrift store, and an expanded menu of dog-training classes. 6 Annual Report LHS 2008 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORS Ronald Ackerman Ahlberg Funeral Chapel Vicky & Rod Ahlberg Amgen Maryellen & JC Ancell Anonymous Donors Laura Appelhans Kaye Bache-Snyder & Howard Snyder Virginia Baksa Holly Barrett Libby Barstow Belinda & Randall Bauck Deb & Hoag Baumgartner George & Evelyn Beal Brianna Beauvait Joanne Becker Sue Beggs William & Nancy Berry Tom & Jackie Bilan Steve Bingham Jan, Brian & Chris Bittel Kevin Blankenship Susan & John Blunt Myron Bosch Sharon Boyd Steve Boyd Diane Boyers Kevin Brandt Jane Brenneman Leon & Saibon Marie Brunnemer Mike, Linda & Emily Bryan Rae & Darin Buchanan Donna Callow Jean Cannella Anne & Elbert Chapman First Main Street Insurance Laurel Chrisman Diana Cinnamon City of Longmont Beverly Clancy Sharon & James Clark Barbara & Carl Clausen Sarah & Ray Clusman Daily Times Call Connie Coffield Susan Coit Dorothy Colagiovanni Charlene Cummingham Town of Dacono Janine D'Anniballe Mike,Cyndy & Christina Dennison Richard & Elizabeth Donnelly Kathleen Donovan Barbara Downing Margie Drake & JJ Fenstermaker Linda Drake Bitner Dennis & Carol Duffy Kathey & Thomas Durdin Mark & Sue Ehlbert Jeff & Marcia Elgar Carey & Sharon Emerson Clay & Jody Evans James & Suzanne Eyerman Nancy Farmer Jeanine Figur De & Chuck Fowler Rich & Connie Friedman Michelle Friedrich Wendy Fulks & Susan Nickerson Annette & James Gaskill Gina Geisel Jake & Lisa Gesner Bryan & Natalie Gilbert Janie Gillies New Frontier Bank Susan Goldsmith Marjorie Grant Carol Grossman Gina Gumina Barbara Halpin Patricia & Joseph Harper Douglass Hawes Melinda Helmick Julee Herdt Lee & Dwight Hill Faleesha & Brad Hindman Cathy & Danny Hirsch Linda Holmes Ballard David & Suzanne Hoover Paul Hopkins Peggy Horst Jerry & Pat Hozempa Cheri & Paul Humphrey Greenfield Foundation Janice James and Dottie Rooke Chris Jehn Robert Johnson & Eileen Milton Dennis & Betti Jones Charlotte & Alexander Jordan Dan,Cheryle & Codie Kapsak Shari Karmen Ulla & Jim Kauffman James Kerrins & Elizabeth Chlipala Joan & Ken Kinzig Dave & Ellen Kisker Ron, Nicki & Fawn Knopp Julie Kunkel & Tom Drysdale Thomas LaFollette Catherine Lambert Debbie Lane Kim Lane Amber & Josh Law Bruce Leaf Janet Leap Ed & Connie Lehman Garth, Cheryl & Travis Lenberg Gordon Leonard David & Dawn Lewallen Carol Linn Howard & Karla Lipp Valerie Longfellow Rosanne & Dean Loukonen Elise Lovell & Kyle Strong-Novak Town of Lyons Deborah & Mark Magaldi Theresa Mallon & Ward Van Driest Don Martin Elizabeth Matsch Mrs. Frances McCarty Lydia McCoy Jaime McKee Town of Mead Collins Foundation Trust John & Garda Meyer Dr. Stephen Miller & Maria Wasson Esther Mills Kathy Miyasaki Jacquelyne Mohn Gerry Moorhead Nanette Morelli Michael & Heather Mundt Brownie Troop 29 The Murphy Families Caroly Murray Deb Nastaj and Scott Bell Momentum Lee Netzler Marianne Nick Longmont Community Foundation Jennifer & Marta Oakley Kate O'Brien Julie Palm Michael & Jane Parenteau Anne Park Kathy Peterson Pam Pierce Nancy Eletto & Bruce Pizzimenti Linda Powers Chris & Renee Price Gayle & Frank Rainey Rhonda Rankin Dixie Robbins Robert & Ingrid Rochester Candace Rork & Sue McSwain Sam Weideman & Jen Ryan Aimee & Lee Sadler Peter & Gail Sawchuk Laura & Paul Schafer Sarah & Tad Scheiblich Diane Schell & Marilyn Allan Marti Schmauss & Rick Metzger Vicki & Dean Schooler Karen Schwartz Charmaine Settle Robert Nonemaker Foundation for Small Animals Anthony and Sara Spensieri Pat Spetz Leslie Stoner & Justin Benedetti Judith Straffin Luke & Jolene Stromquist Sunset Middle School Trish Swaney Patsy & Norman Tate Jonathan & Sheryl Thomas Susan & Robert Thompson Deborah & David Turunjian Linda & Patrick Tyler Marilyn & Steve Uilk Anne Uwins & Janet Ellern Rebecca Velthoen Steve Wack Linda Wagner Ann Waite Marie Warren Jillian Weems Kim & Brittany Wehde Jane Weitzel Alice & David Whitehead Anne Whitehurst Willard Eccles Charitable Trust Don & Jerilyn Wilson Jane Wilson Michael & Laurel Wilson Jolie Wolf Janiece Woodland & Tammy Shannon Wells Fargo Rita Yaroush Stacy Young LHS Annual Report 7 MEREDITH HOPE EMERSON MEMORIAL FUND In January 2008, Longmont resident and Niwot High School graduate Meredith Emerson was tragically killed while hiking in Georgia with her dog Ella. Because of Meredith’s great love for animals, her parents asked that memorial donations be sent to Longmont Humane Society. Shelter staff set up a memorial Web site for Meredith and within two weeks hundreds of people from around the world had given more than $37,000 in her memory. Meredith’s family chose the beautiful “mid-point lobby” in the new Longmont Humane Society Allen Center to memorialize her. A hand-made wooden bench and a moving portrait are now on display in what has become “Meredith’s Lobby.” In addition, in November, with the family’s blessing, LHS rechristened its spring fundraising walk in recognition of Meredith’s compassion, love and care for Ella – who now lives with the family in Longmont – and all living things. The event,in its 16th year in 2009, will be called “Ella’s Walk in Memory of Meredith Hope Emerson.” 2008 MEREDITH HOPE EMERSON MEMORIAL FUND DONORS Allison Aichinger Beverly Allen Donald & Kathleen Center in California to address the unfortunate historical friction between groups with differing philosophies. The conferees agreed on common principles and goals, consistent language and standards for the classification and collection of animal statistics. Until recently, Longmont Humane Society was unable to provide the detailed statistics required under the Asilomar Accords. But last year, thanks to new software and help from the Metro Denver Shelter Alliance and Maddie’s Fund, LHS is now able to report Asilomar statistics. Using this data, shelters are able to calculate a “live release rate” – the percentage of cats and dogs that leave a shelter alive. The live-release rate helps shelters measure their annual progress in saving animals. Open-admission shelters such as LHS, which take every animal without regard to age, health, breed or any other factor, typically have lower live-release rates. “Limited-admission” shelters and sanctuaries often report higher numbers because they accept limited numbers of animals and often only those likely to be adopted. Longmont Humane Society’s animal statistics for 2008 demonstrate a commitment to excellence in animal care and placement. The shelter’s annual live-release rate of 74 percent more than doubles the national average of 36 percent, according to the most recent data from the National Council on Pet Population Study & Policy Shelter Statistics Survey. Collection of animal statistics information and other LHS activities on behalf of lost, stray and homeless dogs and cats are generously supported by a grant from Maddie’s Fund. Maddie was a beloved miniature schnauzer who inspired her guardians to create this charitable foundation to help animals. Please visit www.maddiesfund.org for more information. For more information on the Asilomar Accords, visit www.asilomaraccords.org 10 Annual Report LHS WAYS OF GIVING Longmont Humane Society is not a government agency, nor does it receive funding from national humane organizations. The essential services provided to you, your family, your companion animals and your community depend on the generosity of private citizens. Annual Gifts Donations from generous individuals are Longmont Humane Society’s most important source of funding. Estate Planning Gift planning is a great way to make a lasting contribution to the Longmont Humane Society while taking advantage of federal and state tax laws. Foundation Gifts The Longmont Humane Society receives many grants from corporate, private and community foundations. Corporate Support Support from the corporate community is invaluable to our organization. Our business partners make a real difference in so many ways while receiving benefits that highlight their support for the community. Material Donations We always welcome donations of cat litter, pet food, office supplies, paper products and many other items. Consider holding a drive or collection in your neighborhood, school or business. Donations of gently used household and clothing items are also gratefully accepted at the Longmont Humane Society Thrift Store. Event Donations LHS holds major events in the spring and fall. Donations of auction items, food, equipment and other items are crucial to making these events a success. Event Sponsorship Longmont Humane Society relies on its many community business partners to help sponsor Ella’s Walk and the Furry Friends Festival and The Animal Affair, which raise donations to help homeless animals. Other in-kind Donations Longmont Humane Society has ongoing partnerships with businesses and individuals who provide such services as information technology, legal, accounting and mechanical. Memorials/Honoraria Few tributes are more lasting than a gift that supports the thousands of animals receiving temporary shelter from us each year. Give a donation in tribute to or in memory of a loved one and you both will be mentioned on our Web site. Stock Gifts A gift of stock that you have owned for at least one year can be beneficial to you, tax-wise. If you sell shares of stock, you will pay a capital gains tax on the increase in value. By making a gift of the stock to LHS, you avoid tax on this gain. Vehicle Donations Longmont Humane Society accepts tax-deductible donations of cars, trucks, boats and RVs. All vehicles are accepted and will be towed at no expense. Workplace Giving Many employers allow payroll deductions for charitable giving; please ask about this option at your place of business. In addition, Longmont Humane Society is a member of Community Shares of Colorado, a coalition of more than 100 local non-profit agencies cooperating to raise funds through payroll deductions. VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Longmont Humane Society could not provide shelter and find homes for thousands of animals a year if it weren’t for our dedicated corps of more than 350 volunteers. Whether they are interacting with the animals – walking dogs, grooming cats or playing with small mammals – providing foster care for animals in need of care or rehabilitation, assisting with adoptions and kennel maintenance, serving on our board of directors, or helping with special events, our volunteers give generously of their time and energy to help us achieve our mission. In 2008, LHS volunteers gave an amazing 28,832 hours of service, which translates to the equivalent of almost 14 full-time employees and a value of nearly $250,000. Thanks to the help of our volunteers, those resources can be used in many other ways to directly help the animals.
