Susan Jones, Chairperson of the Chamber opened the dinner program saying “you will see that this year’s recipients are examples of business and personal success achieved through hard work, creativity, dedication, innovation, endurance, enthusiasm and excellence.” More than 225 people including many state, county and local officials as well as Chamber of Commerce leaders and members and family and friends of award recipients attended. Jessica Van Meter said most importantly, the family farm allows her and her brother to spend quality time with their father and that is invaluable to them. Doug Zirkle thanked his children and wife for running the farm while he was recovering from a serious accident. Cosmo Terrigno praised his family for the endurance and success of the business. Chamber Board member Wayne Sabota quoted Patricia Ireland, an attorney and nationally known social activist in his introduction saying “I don’t think you lead by pessimism and cynicism. I think you lead by optimism and enthusiasm and energy.” He added that certainly Jean and Al Scarani have demonstrated these traits in their personal and business lives. In 1974 they started their businesses -- Jean’s first preschool was operated in Centerton and Al took over his father’s service station in Bridgeton. Simmerman Community Leadership Award “When volunteers put a community in a positive light for 49 consecutive years, they deserve the thanks and praise of a grateful community.” Honorary Chamber Board member Gary Simmerman and Chamber Board member Debbie Arno presented the Gary F. Simmerman Community Leadership Award to the Bridgeton Invitational Tournament Committee. Debbie commented, “all of the key words in the award ceremony’s theme, apply to the Bridgeton Invitational Tournament Committee.” Gary Simmerman remarked, “when volunteers plan and run an event that puts Bridgeton and the area in a positive light for 49 consecutive years, they deserve the thanks and praise of a grateful community.” The tournament traces its roots back to Bridgeton’s successful hosting of the Babe Ruth League World Series in 1962. Jerry Alden, Ben Lynch, Mayor John Spoltore and others helped convince Babe Ruth Baseball to hold the World Series at Alden Field in Bridgeton and Bridgeton hosted the national event and did so with great success. Francis “Binks” Sharp Lifetime Achievement Award “A man of high character, who cares deeply about family, friends and community.” The Chamber’s most prestigious award, the Francis “Binks” Sharp Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Paul J. Ritter, III. Chamber Board Member and Awards Committee Chairperson Laurie LaTorre led the presentation of this award. According to Laurie, “Paul Ritter was honored for many reasons but paramount among them was being a person who Paul Ritter received the strives for and achieves excellence.” Lifetime Achievement Award Paul Ritter’s success in life and business was from Susan Jones. described to the audience including many community and business leadership roles. He accepted the award acknowledging his relationship with the award’s namesake and naming many of the past recipients who were present at the event. He thanked his co-workers at Cumberland Insurance Group, his wife Wendy and his family for their support over the years and thanked the Chamber for the award. 8 Page 6 • Business News • Winter 2015-2016 Bruce Riley to Chair the Chamber in January Board Members and Officers for 2016 Elected The Chamber held its annual meeting on Dec. 1 at Centerton Country Club which included the election of Bruce Riley of Ultra Clean Technologies as the 2016 Chairman of the Chamber, election and installation of other officers and directors and a presentation by New Jersey Assemblyman Louis Greenwald. The meeting was sponsored by Century Savings Bank. Bruce will take over the Chairman’s position from Susan Jones who will complete two years as the Chairperson of the Chamber on December 31. Susan was recognized and thanked for “extraordinary leadership of and service to the Chamber” by Tony Stanzione, Chamber Executive Director. Susan expressed her thanks to the many Chamber members who helped the Chamber during her years as its volunteer leader. She thanked Garry Hill and Tony Stanzione for the work they do in assisting the officers, board members and Chamber members. She also thanked outgoing board members Wayne Sabota and Ed Kay for their years of service to the Chamber. The Chamber of Commerce presented a mini golf event at Landis Links in Upper Deerfield on Friday, Oct. 23 featuring mini golf in the dark with players and volunteers in Halloween costumes. Business owners, managers and public officials from the Townships and representatives from The Chamber by the Bay attended the meeting. The meeting was sponsored by South Jersey Gas Keep It Simple program. Deputy Mayor Patti Gross of Maurice River, Susan Jones, Chairperson of Bridgeton Area Chamber and Lawrence Township Mayor Erwin Sheppard of Lawrence opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. The business spotlight section featured Aly Baker & Jessica Gibson of Kidstown Childcare located in Maurice River and Tamara Cicioli, CEO of Bridgeton Onized Federal Union that is opening a branch in Lawrence Township. Both provided informative presentations about their businesses. Dep. Mayor Patti Gross reported on business support and marketing programs of the Maurice River Economic Development Committee. This includes a new gateway sign program on Rt. 47 welcoming visitors and promoting local businesses. Megan Wren from Chamber by the Bay talked about the activities on the Chamber. Tony Riviera of Cumberland County Improvement Authority talked about the new Adopt-a-Road Program which is replacing the old program.
