Chamber’s 29th Salute to Business & Industry
T
he Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce held its 29th annual
awards celebration that honors local businesses and business
and community leaders on Oct. 29 at Centerton Country Club in
Pittsgrove. Susan Jones, Chairperson of the Chamber opened the dinner
program saying “you will see that this year’s recipients are examples of
business and personal success achieved through hard work, creativity,
dedication, innovation, endurance, enthusiasm and excellence.” More
than 225 people including many state, county and local officials as well as
Chamber of Commerce leaders and members and family and friends of
award recipients attended.
Jessica Van Meter said most importantly, the family farm allows her and
her brother to spend quality time with their father and that is invaluable to
them. Doug Zirkle thanked his children and wife for running the farm while
he was recovering from a serious accident.

that certainly Jean and Al Scarani have demonstrated these traits in their
personal and business lives. In 1974 they started their businesses -- Jean’s first
preschool was operated in Centerton and Al took over his father’s service
station in Bridgeton.

Leadership Award to the Bridgeton Invitational Tournament Committee.
Debbie commented, “all of the key words in the award ceremony’s
theme, apply to the Bridgeton Invitational Tournament Committee.” Gary
Simmerman remarked, “when volunteers plan and run an event that puts
Bridgeton and the area in a positive light for 49 consecutive years, they
deserve the thanks and praise of a grateful community.” The tournament
traces its roots back to Bridgeton’s successful hosting of the Babe Ruth
League World Series in 1962. Jerry Alden, Ben Lynch, Mayor John Spoltore
and others helped convince Babe Ruth Baseball to hold the World Series at
Alden Field in Bridgeton and Bridgeton hosted the national event and did
so with great success.

New Jersey Assemblyman Louis Greenwald. The
meeting was sponsored by Century Savings Bank.
Bruce will take over the Chairman’s position
from Susan Jones who will complete two years as
the Chairperson of the Chamber on December
31. Susan was recognized and thanked for

the Chamber” by Tony Stanzione, Chamber
Executive Director. Susan expressed her thanks
to the many Chamber members who helped the
Chamber during her years as its volunteer leader.

Merchants Committee
The Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has
formed a special committee to bring community leaders and leaders of
the Hispanic business community together to increase understanding,
communication, interaction and commerce among the traditional
businesses and the Hispanic businesses in the Bridgeton area through
membership in the Chamber of Commerce and a number of meetings
and activities.
“The Chamber’s Hispanic Merchants Committee was formed at the
request of Gil Walter, Rev. David Rivera and others who have been working
over a few years to connect the Hispanic business community with other
area businesses, to get them to work together to increase business and
to improve the community,” explained Bruce Riley, Chairman of the
Chamber’s Business Services and Economic Development Committee
and the new Hispanic Merchants Committee.
The Hispanic Merchants Committee of the Chamber of Commerce
includes members and those assisting the committee. They include

Mr. Benton began his career in the coffee, water and

Inspira Health Network and Cooper University
Health Care celebrated the opening of a new multispecialty health care center in Glassboro at a ribbon
cutting recently. The new Inspira Health Center
Glassboro and Cooper Bone and Joint Institute at
Inspira Woodbury office will provide members of the
community and Rowan University students with easy
access to outpatient health services. Estimated to
cost approximately $1.9 million, the 27,500 squarefoot center is located within the newest building
constructed as part of the Rowan Boulevard
redevelopment project. Together, Inspira and Cooper
are working to bring co-located services, extended
hours, clinical expertise, and timely care all in one
convenient location. Inspira Health Center Glassboro
is located at 200 Rowan Boulevard across from the
Barnes & Noble Bookstore.

On Thursday, Nov. 12, at 5:30 PM, Cumberland Development Corp. and
Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Maurice River and
Lawrence Townships, held a free business information meeting at the Maurice
River Township Senior Center in Leesburg. Business owners, managers and public
officials from the Townships and representatives from The Chamber by the Bay
attended the meeting. The meeting was sponsored by South Jersey Gas Keep It
Simple program.
Deputy Mayor Patti Gross of Maurice River, Susan Jones, Chairperson of
Bridgeton Area Chamber and Lawrence Township Mayor Erwin Sheppard of
Lawrence opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. The business spotlight
section featured Aly Baker & Jessica Gibson of Kidstown Childcare located
in Maurice River and Tamara Cicioli, CEO of Bridgeton Onized Federal Union
that is opening a branch in Lawrence Township. Both provided informative
presentations about their businesses.
Dep. Mayor Patti Gross reported on business support and marketing programs
of the Maurice River Economic Development Committee. This includes a
new gateway sign program on Rt. 47 welcoming visitors and promoting local
businesses. Megan Wren from Chamber by the Bay talked about the activities on
the Chamber. Tony Riviera of Cumberland County Improvement Authority talked
about the new Adopt-a-Road Program which is replacing the old program.
Jody Hirata represented Cooperative Business Assistance Corporation explaining
the loan options available to area businesses including loans through US Rural
Development and US SBA. Tony Stanzione provided information about Bridgeton
Area Chamber of Commerce, CDC and www.ShopLocalCumberland.com.
Meeting sponsor South Jersey Gas provided information on its Keep It Simple
program and financial help for installation of energy–efficient equipment and
improvements. The evening concluded with a presentation about business
marketing tips for small businesses by Ken and Kevin Pustizzi of SNJ Today and its
related companies.
