THE
It is well known that female survivors of domestic violence face diverse
challenges after they step away from abusive situations. Often, these women
become isolated and devastation sets in, and this negative reality occurs both
personally as well as financially. Finding the path to self-sufficiency and
financial independence can be difficult and often overwhelming.
Introduction
For social providers committed to assisting these women, the challenge then
becomes not only providing services to help victims break the cycle of
violence, but also providing additional services to assist survivors. In order to
successfully provide holistic services to victims, there are certainly questions
that demand answers: How can organizations help survivors of violence
beyond breaking the cycle of violence? How can organizations support an
initiative oriented to develop self-esteem in survivors? How can organizations
develop a strategy to help survivors become successfully integrated into their
communities?.
Our 2013 Annual Conference strives to answer the above questions and to
specifically highlight how important it is for organizations to take the
necessary steps to move beyond the traditional services provided to survivors
of violence in order to help them to heal and to guide them to becoming
self-sufficient, successful women.
This establishment of new and/or increased services in order to meet the
complicated needs of survivors can often be accomplished through
collaborative partnerships and through innovative programming. To help
visualize the need for holistic programming and to demonstrate the successes
that partnerships can accomplish, we will present two highly successful
women with compelling first-hand knowledge as our Keynote Speakers:
Mallory Hagan, Miss America 2013 and founder of Prevent Child Abuse
Foundation, and Dr. Yasmin Davidds, an international best-selling author
and founder of Empowering Women Foundation. We will have the Honorable
Ms. Karen Pence, First Lady of Indiana, joining the Conference as a guest
speaker
In addition to these noteworthy speakers, seven powerful, influential and
highly successful Indiana women will be sharing their experiences at a round
table discussion. As women are often in the best position to help other women,
these inspirational females will share their personal stories and their thoughts
on success. They will also talk about what steps women, particularly survivors
of violence, need to take in order to become self-sufficient and financially
independent.
And, in order to directly assist service providers, six workshops will be
conducted and have been specifically designed to help service providers
acquire knowledge and develop the necessary skills so that they will have
major planning and intervention tools available when helping survivors to
move beyond breaking the cycle of violence and on to the path toward
self-sufficiency and success.
We welcome professionals, service providers, students, domestic violence
victims, community leaders and others to gather with us at our Annual
Conference in order to explore these crucial topics, develop new skills and
perspectives and enhance the daily work dedicated to helping those in need.
Please join us at the conference and become part of the vision, and part of the
solution.

Mallory Hagan, Miss America 2013
Yasmin Davidds, International Best-Selling Author
As she sat by the side of the freeway—suicidal and utterly without hope—Yasmin Davidds had no
idea that the pain she was experiencing would lead her to a life of empowering and healing others.
Today, the memory is still fresh, but the pain is gone, replaced by hope, strength, love and courage.
Recognized and highlighted as one of the top Leading Latinas by Hispanic Magazine (June, 2003),
Yasmin Davidds, CEO and founder of Empowering Latinas, Inc., has empowered and motivated
tens of thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds by teaching them to discover their inner
strength and potential. As author of the internationally best-selling book Empowering Latinas:
Breaking Boundaries, Freeing Lives (Penmarin), she has appeared on hundreds of radio and
television shows and has been featured in numerous publications, focusing on her expertise in
community outreach and Latino empowerment. Yasmin carries a degree in Business
Entrepreneurship from the University of Southern California, has received her Masters Degree in
Women Studies – specializing in Latina Issues – from San Diego State University and also
attended the University of Cambridge in Great Britain.
Karen Pence has been a school teacher for more than 25 years. As First lady, Karen continues her
passion for educating children by traveling the state visiting schools. She thoroughly enjoys shining
the spotlight on our amazing schools in Indiana. Mrs. Pence is an artist and small business owner.
Her specialty is watercolors of homes and historical buildings. Mrs. Pence is honorary chair of the
Art Therapy Initiative at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis and is a board member of Tracy's
Kids, an art therapy program for several children's hospitals in Washington, D.C. She is excited to
be filling her office with art work created by students from all over the state. In addition to traveling
the state, Mrs. Pence is honored to have been named the official Bicentennial Ambassador by the
Indiana Bicentennial Commission. In this position, she will play a key role in the planning and
execution of a statewide celebration of Indiana’s 200th birthday in 2016. Mrs. Pence earned a B.S.
and M.S. in Elementary Education from Butler University. She and Governor Mike Pence have
been married since 1985 and have three grown children: Michael, Charlotte, and Audrey.
8 th Annual Statewide Conference / Empowering Women: Building Healthy Communities
Guest Speaker
Karen Pence, Indiana First Lady
Keynote Speakers
Mallory Hagan is a twenty-four year-old student at The Fashion Institute of Technology working
toward a Bachelors Degree in Communications. A native of Alabama, Mallory moved to New York
five years ago and, this past year, became the first Miss New York to win Miss America since
Vanessa Williams. With the job of Miss America 2013, Mallory traveled the United States and
Canada wearing many “hats.” As the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle
Network Hospitals, Ms. Hagan helped raise funds and awareness for the 170 Children’s Hospitals
across the U.S. and Canada. In addition, Mallory worked with the Department of Education and
Secretary Arne Duncan to promote STEM career fields across the nation with worldwide conventions
and activities such as “Let’s Read. Let’s Move.” where she was partnered with NASA. Mallory’s
greatest passion, however, lies in being an advocate for her personal platform, Stop it Now: Child
Sexual Abuse, an issue that thoroughly affected the women in her family. This year, Ms. Hagan had
the opportunity to work with several organizations across America in order to raise awareness and
champion for prevention. Her greatest accomplishment as Miss America 2013 has been the ability to
lobby on Capitol Hill with the National Children’s Alliance and fight to restore our Federal
Government’s funding to the Victims of Child Abuse Act (VOCAA).
Session 1 (10:25 - 11:25 am)
Track 1
(Presenter: Allison Melangton, President, Indiana Sports Corporation)
Each and every day, women continue to break the glass ceiling and are taking on more leadership roles in our society. As
gender roles evolve, female leaders can and will impact and inspire others to be bold and effective, especially victims and
survivors of violence. At this workshop, social providers will receive insights and tips on leadership styles and techniques
that can make a difference, helping providers to be better prepared as they work to lead victims into their futures and to
become leaders themselves.
Educate Girls, Change the World
Track 2
(Presenter: Lonni Gill, PhD, Professor, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis)
Education empowers women and girls in ways that impact their development and identities while simultaneously
providing them with the potential for economic well-being and stability. This workshop will provide a systemic
understanding of the importance of investing in education for females and how this directly relates to developing
healthy communities and even reducing violence. Learn more about how education empowers females, not just in our
city or nation, but all over the world.
Female Immigrant Victims of Violence Can Become Successful Women

Female Leadership in our Society

available to female victims of violence from underserved populations.

Service providers and nonprofit groups can empower victims to protect themselves from harm not only by providing
information that help women escape the terror of violence, such as by assisting with temporary or permanent shelter,

as through financial support, workforce development training and by providing legal advocacy. This workshop will focus
