Montessori in Redlands
Montessori in Redlands 2010-2011 Annual Report Education for Life REFLECTIONS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL “Education should no longer be mostly imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentialities.” —Maria Montessori “Education is all a matter of building bridges.” —novelist Ralph Ellison 2010-2011 MIR ANNUAL REPORT MONTESSORI IN REDLANDS Throughout her lifetime Maria Montessori made several references to “gardening” when describing her work with children. She felt that her job was to “plant seeds” and let nature takes its course. She was always amazed at what “grew”: “I started my work like a peasant who had put aside good seeds of wheat, and to whom a fertile piece of land had been offered so he could sow it according to his wish. But it was not to be. As soon as I moved the sod of that earth, I found gold, rather than wheat. The sods were hiding a precious treasure.” As in previous years at Montessori in Redlands(MIR), we watched the children grow into themselves, and like Montessori, we also found treasure. Their achievements were great indeed and they surprised us at every turn with their physical growth, intellectual strides, social awareness, and developmental progress. Along with the children, the school grew in the 2010-11 year. Our “garden” with the most growth was the Elementary program, which housed 116 students by year-end. This is the largest Elementary group in the school’s history and this growth is attributed to seeds we planted several years back, educating parents and the community about the benefits of the Montessori Elementary program. In a touch-and-go economy, our families are investing in the education of their children -- an investment that yields invaluable returns. Children at MIR got to witness our real gardens on campus grow to greatness. Our community garden, filled with native and drought resistant plants, was tended by all the children in the school, as each class took a turn weeding and watering and adding a new feature. Elementary students planted vegetables and strawberries thanks to the grant they received from the Redlands Horticultural Society. What a wonderful experience for them and a wonderful metaphor for their own individual growth. As in previous years, the support and commitment of MIR parents are vital to the life of the school and the ability for us to provide the rich and fertile environment in which your children grow. Thank you for sharing your children with us. FOCUS ON MIR FACILITIES UPDATE Toddler teacher Aedín Artigue celebrated her 30th year at Montessori in Redlands. Aedín began her Montessori journey as a child, attending Sion Hill Montessori School in Dublin, Ireland. On the same campus for her high school years, Aedín visited and volunteered as much as possible in the Primary classrooms, returning as a young adult to take her Montessori training. It was here she met her husband Michael and upon graduation in 1977 they both headed to his native California. Michael was hired at MIR first and Aedín soon after in 1980. In 1985 Aedín was offered the opportunity to take over the fledgling Toddler class and she has been there ever since, sharing her spirit with the children ages 18 months through 3 years. She is proud that the Toddler community has grown to three thriving classrooms providing a wonderful opportunity for so many little ones to begin their Montessori journeys. All four of Aedín and Michael’s children attended MIR. They are all grown and living their lives pursuing their dreams. Aedín and her husband Michael worked at MIR when it was on the Esri campus on New York Street. He began the first Elementary class and she was hired as a Primary Directress teaching children ages 3 to 6. After a year and expecting their third child, Aedín began an in-home infant-toddler program at MIR eventually returning to the Primary classroom at MIR with her now of-age Toddler students. In 2011, along with celebrating 30 years at MIR, Aedín became a grandmother. Thanks to generous donations from the 2009-10 MIR Spring Gala and Auction, MIR was able to upgrade the Elementary playground and build a new track for our students. With the track came more improvements to the Elementary playgrounds. New boulders were added for climbing and sitting and the ball court was given a coat of new paint. The work to the Toddler playground shown here was done by Dan Hudson (father to Elementary student Sunny Hudson) of Palm Canyon Contractors, at a generous discount to MIR. The Toddler playground was also given a facelift: re-grading of the yard and the installation of a circular tricycle path allows for the full use of the outdoor environment for our youngest students. Speed bumps and signs were added to both parking lots in an effort to increase the safety of our students. Cars must travel at 5 mph at all times and do not have the ability to speed up between bumps. As part of MIR’s Green School Initiative, some small changes have been made to lighting around the campus to reduce our energy usage. MIR also saw a significant decrease in energy consumption as a result of the new HVAC system on the Main Building. MIR welcomed new Facilities and Maintenance Technician Rick Campa. Rick joined us in July 2010 with the eye and energy to see all that needed to be done to keep the grounds and buildings functional and beautiful. STATEMENT FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Leela MadhavaRau President, Board of Trustees The primary responsibility of any board is a fiduciary one. For the past two years, the MIR Board of Trustees has been doing its best to forecast and budget for all possible scenarios. By steering a very intentional, fiscally conservative course, we ended this academic year in a strong position for 2011-2012. The strength of the school’s Finance Committee was once again proven by our continued ability to put money into a cash reserve to maintain MIR’s building repair and replacement fund while working with severe fiscal constraints. We begin the 2011-2012 school year with great confidence. In spite of the economic situation, our enrollment and retention rates are strong and our strong fiscal management will allow us to maintain the highest quality Montessori education. It is a testament to our teachers, staff, and Head of School that our elementary enrollment numbers have reached their highest level in our history. The Board now runs most business through its active committee structure. One example of this has been the Green School Initiative, run under the auspices of the Long Range Planning Committee. Working with students, parents, teachers, staff, members of the community as well as the Board, MIR has made further commitments to becoming a Green School from the classroom through to purchasing. This past year was the final year in the six-year terms for three Board members (myself, Ed Murphy, and Karen Oliver). We are proud of all that has been accomplished in our time on the Board, acknowledging that the hard work of others has made our successes possible. All that the Board has completed in this past year could not have been done without the dedication of the staff and administrators at MIR. Their whole-hearted commitment to the school allows us to rise to greater heights each year. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Leela MadhavaRau, President Pam Ford, Vice President Leon Garcia, Treasurer Dean Silliman, Secretary Robert Dawes Walt Johnson Ed Murphy Trevor Norton Karen Oliver Working with students, parents, teachers, staff, members of the community as well as the Board, MIR has made further commitments to becoming a Green School from the classroom through to purchasing. GIVING REPORT Ryan and Angela Brenchley Jeffrey and Kristin DeVito Deane and Lisa Kensok Leonid and Anna Mikhailova Bryan and Shawnda Zook - in honor of Gavin and Travis Zook The MIR Annual Fund continues to grow, reaching total schoolwide participation of 95% in the 2010-11 school year. This is a tremendous show of support for the school, one rarely matched by even the most elite schools around the country. The MIR community and friends of the school were generous in their giving. Total funds raised came to $40,516. We offer our sincere gratitude to all MIR Annual Fund donors. Your generous support helped us to maintain our beautiful learning environments, enhance our programs, and provide staff training and development without raising tuition. We would especially like to acknowledge members of the “100 club”—classrooms and groups that achieved 100% participation this year: MIR Board of Trustees MIR Staff Maria’s Primary class Nikki’s Primary Class Sara’s Primary Class Kelly’s Elementary Class Annual Fund Contributions & Participation over the past 3 Years. 2010-2011 MIR ANNUAL FUND Patron $2,000-$4,999 Babak and Leila Khazaeni Lincoln Financial John and Karen Oliver Benefactor $1,000-$1,999 Roberto Argentina and Maura Joyce Contributor $500-$999 Anonymous (1) - in honor of Abbey Umali Damon and Stephanie Bogan Charles and Ellen Camarillo Doug and Amber Claflin Michael Cummings and Faye Owen-Cummings Emad and Ireny Ibrahim Michael Larrance and Jo Lynn Lambert - in honor of MIR’s gifted teachers Mohsen Mabudian and Michele Vercoski - in honor of Kamron, Ava, and Kevan Mabudian Edward Murphy and Karen Derris James Stewart and Christina Bennett-Stewart - in honor of James Stewart Associate $250-$499 Anonymous (4) Ken and Pam Alford Julio Andrade and Sabine Barrera Wesley and Elizabeth Bernardini Robert and Suzanne Blee Michael Burke and Valerie Seabaugh-Burke David Carter and Leela MadhavaRau Wen-Yang Cheng and Wacharapan (Cherry) Boonsaeng - in honor of Abigail Cheng Ismael Chivite and Alejandra Merino Matt Crowder and Jennifer Cadkin - in honor of Josie and Bodie Crowder Kristin Goodfellow Marten Hogeweg and Saskia de Jong Kara Holzinger John and Dinesh Imbriani Walter and Adele Johnson Frank Kish and Edie Punt Julia Lambson Walter Noon and Darlene Rae - in memory of Jennifer Wilson Sanjay Patel and Lily Chung Paul Rice and Rena Dahl-Rice Issa and Samineh Sam Rick and Kathryn Simon Sivabalan and Sentha Sivabalan Ifeany Ugochuku Jeff and Teresa Wickstrom David and Cindy Wong Berj Zakarian and Nairy Sarkis Friend $1-$249 Anonymous(23) Anonymous (1) - in honor of George M. We believe this effort should encompass parents, teachers, staff, and members of the community. PTM includes volunteer room representatives from each classroom to help facilitate communication between parents and staff, the PTM Board of officers, and a teacher liaison. The PTM Board and Room Representatives meet regularly to organize events and create a network of parent support. All parents, staff, and friends are encouraged to attend. PTM is dedicated to bringing the MIR community together. In 2010-2011, PTM sponsored Back to School Night, the Fall Carnival, the Spring Carnival, the fall and spring Camp Montessori’s, Back to School Night, two Parent Work Days, two Family Skate Nights, and the Bluebird Running Club. Money for these events is raised through the Innisbrook Gift Wrap fall program, Art Cards spring program, ticket sales at the spring carnival, food sales at both carnivals, and the BoxTops for Education program. All PTM events were arranged and supported by parent and staff volunteers. Part of PTM’s mission is to provide volunteer and financial support to the school. This year PTM representatives used their creative efforts to encourage parents to participate in the Annual Fund, resulting in increased participation. PTM also donated an auction item for the MIR Spring Gala & Auction that raised $2,700 for MIR. PTM supported and recognized MIR staff by catering lunch for one in-service day, acknowledging all staff birthdays, and sponsoring Gala tickets for MIR teachers Gala tickets. We helped fulfill our goal to educate parents about Montessori education by providing free copies of the Association Montessori Internationale newsletter to parents, which covers the Montessori curriculum and parenting topics. In support of our local community, PTM held a fall food drive for Joseph’s Store House in Redlands and a toy drive in April to support Birthday Bags 4 Kids. We also supported students, parents, and staff who participated in the annual Run through Redlands. The PTM Board thanks the room representatives, parents, and staff who support MIR through their volunteer work and donations. We recognize the importance of their efforts in following through with our mission and wish to express our sincere appreciation for these efforts. The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. “Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You never again will pass this way; You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build this bridge at evening tide?” The builder lifted his old gray head; “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followed after me to-day A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been as naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!” The mission of Montessori in Redlands is to guide children in reaching their full potential. Our role is to provide carefully prepared environments in which the academic, social, and spiritual needs of children are fulfilled. Through purposeful activity, the children are free to follow their inner rhythms, enhancing a limitless capacity for white exploration and learning. With this experience, they become individuals who are responsible, caring, and respectful. Will Allen Dromgoole
