You’re invited to participate in CRS Rice
Bowl!
Our parish is participating in CRS Rice Bowl,
Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program, as a way to
encounter Jesus through others, especially through the
most vulnerable in our world. Rice Bowls are available at
the church entrances. Please take one home and use the
easy and fun resources to deepen your family’s Lenten
experience. Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this
Lenten season will help Catholic Relief Services continue
to provide life-saving assistance in nearly 100 countries.
CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our
world and to end global poverty.
Getting Healthy in East Timor
CRS Rice Bowl invites us to learn about East Timor this
week, where tuberculosis is a major health crisis. CRS
works in communities where access to medical care is
limited. This week, we pray for families in East Timor and
give to CRS Rice Bowl to help people who are struggling
with illness.
Help for the Homeless - “The supplies that
were given are more than toothpaste and toilet
paper; they are a sign that the community cares. Thank
you.” –Thomas, Shelter Resident
After St. Gabe’s generous response to the hygiene drive last
year, we are again collecting NEW hygiene and cleaning
items for local homeless shelters and crisis agencies February
22 - March 17. Please place your donations in the Help for
the Homeless collection box located in the back of
church. Supplying these items to the shelters will help them
direct their limited resources to providing qualified staff,
counseling, food and shelter to those they serve. The most
requested items include laundry detergent, garbage bags,
dental and hair care items, diapers & baby care, tissue,
etc. Your donations will remain in this community. Thank
you! More info. www.thefamily.net or 800-236-9364.

Last week included some detail on the practice of
fasting, especially as it relates to fasting from food in the
traditional sense. And this isn’t a practice to be dismissed
lightly! Indeed, Jesus is our example for it in his original
“Lent,” going into the desert and fasting for 40 days.
Notice that the first thing, which Satan tempts him to do, is
to satisfy his hunger. It’s one of our most primal urges, and
learning to master it certainly requires discipline.
It’s also important to remember, though, that the practice
of fasting can and should be applied to other areas of our lives.
This is the concept of “giving something up” for Lent, and it’s
a great way to mark this season. All of us can stand to give
something up that isn’t essential to our lives. We are a culture
saturated with luxury and convenience, and it gives us endless
possibilities of things we could do without. What is it that
tends to distract me from God, or from others around me?
With all the technology at our disposal, we find that we are not
so good at focusing on other people. Could I give up video
games? What about texting or Facebook or my iPod? How
about no music or radio in the car? All of these things would
free up my attention to give it to other people or to God.
Certainly there are the tried-and-true practices of giving up
soda, or caffeine, or alcohol, or candy, or fast food, or junk
food. There’s no limit to the ways we can challenge ourselves.
Again, we have to remember why we would make these
sacrifices, though—to give us a sense of gratitude, perhaps,
or solidarity with the less fortunate, or to save up money to
donate to the poor, or to give us the discipline of saying
“No” to something. Self-denial is not a real popular
practice in this day and age. Yet as disciples of Jesus, it is
exactly what we are called to do on a daily basis.
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take
up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save
his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake
and that of the gospel will save it.” (Mark 8:34-35)
Clearly we should not be putting ourselves first all the
time. So Lent is also a good time to temper our bad habits, and
break them, with God’s help. We can give up being quick to
anger, or interrupting, or rushing to judgment or gossip. And
better still, we can concentrate on replacing these with positive
virtues, instead. Can we exercise patience, or appreciation, or
listening, or complimenting others more freely? Little steps
like these, throughout our forty-day journey, will lead us to a
very fruitful and glorious Easter!

Feminine Genius - Building upon Blessed
Pope John Paul II's writings about "the feminine
genius", Colleen Carroll Campbell discusses the uniqueness
of the makeup and vocation of women from God. She uses
the lives of several female saints to help women recognize
and use their gifts to live out their faith as Christians in the
modern world. Author and columnist Colleen Carroll
Campbell hosts EWTN's Faith and Culture program.
Parishioner Comments:
Colleen uses John Paul II's message to show us how to affect the
world with our true feminine genius. I'm going to share this with
my own girls!"

Anita and I have been attending St. Gabriel Parish since we
moved to Neenah in 1989. I am the youngest of 11 children and
was raised in the Catholic Church. Anita went through the
RCIA program at St. Gabriel almost 20 years ago. Being her
sponsor was a great learning experience for me as well. Over
the years, we have been involved with the parish in various
ways including our children’s school activities and many years
of working on the parish Round Up. I have always enjoyed the
sense of community from being engaged with parish activity
and joining the Parish Council and a small group has been the
best experience of all. I am very excited about the future of St.
Gabriel Parish and encourage everyone to participate in the
small group program. If I can ever be of assistance, feel free to
contact me at [email protected] or 920-727-0883.
Question of the Week
For the Second Sunday of Lent, February 24, 2013
“Master, it is good that we are here;…” Have you ever made
such a statement? When you make such a statement, do you feel
safe? Comfortable? Has comfort and safety ever been an excuse
not to change? Not to grow? Have you ever left one of those
“comfort zones” only to realize that it wasn’t such a good place
but you had stayed merely because you didn’t want to change?
Check out our “comfort zones” and see if you need to do a better
job of hearing God. What might Jesus be telling you when you
hear God say, “This is my chosen Son, listen to him.”
