PARISH LITURGY SCHEDULE MALLIA’S MOMENTS By Fr. Joe Mallia Weekend Masses I wanted to begin by thanking so many of you who expressed your feelings at the news that I will be reassigned at the end of June. I too am sad about leaving and I will miss many things about this parish, the school, the people and even the city, but I believe that this is an opportunity for all of us to grow and be challenged by the Spirit of God. I ask all of us not to be “chicken littles” and think that the sky is falling because I am moving. I have always said that you are the parish and the school. My role here was to pastor the parish for a time but that you will remain and you are the heart and soul of this parish, not me. Like parents who watch a child grow, they know at some point they are going to let the child go because they know that the child is capable of handling the future on his or her own. You are ready to do this without me as pastor. The parish is in a wonderful place spiritually. There are many great things happening and it will continue to grow. You are capable of making it happen. You have the tools, the education and the desire. Now do Saturday Evening 5:00pm Sunday 8:00am, 10:00am, 12:00noon & 7:00pm Daily Mass Monday - Saturday at 8:30am Confession Tuesday 7:30pm (see pg. 8) Saturday 4:00pm Mass Tuesday 7:00pm Holy Day Masses As scheduled in Bulletin Rectory Office Hours Monday thru Thursday 8:00am-7:00pm Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm (Closed for lunch 12 - 1pm) Saturday 9:00am - 2:00pm Sunday CLOSED it as God has called you to do through your baptism. You don’t need me; you need to trust in God. The school is not the same as it was when I arrived. Beyond the fact that the enrollment has doubled and is stable, weall of us- have worked to improve the education, the physical buildings, expanded the computer program, added the Dream Mentor Program, the Cabrini Community of Intentional Success, the Encourager Program, various clubs, classes and sports to mention just a few things. That was not me, but was all of us working together. The school will not decline because I am not here! The foundations are well in place to keep this school growing into the future if you want it to grow. You will have to support the school and you will have to encourage others to attend. The best years of recruiting have been when we had families recruiting other families. You know how and you are capable of making it happen. I look forward to hearing more great things in the future from the parish and the school. I am not so foolish as to think I am the best pastor or even the only pastor for this parish. Many others are capable and willing to love you, support you and serve here. Page 2 (continued) Be open to them. I do not want people to poison the water before he arrives by saying things like, Fr. Joe did this, or Fr. Joe did that. I am going to a new place and I would hate to spend the first part of my time there constantly being compared to the priest who just left- good or bad. Please pray for the new pastor even before he is named and for this parish and school to be open minded and open hearted. My time here has been a series of blessings. I am very proud of our parish in its desire to pray, serve and sacrifice for the sake of others. I am very proud of our schools. It was not easy to get our standards up, but the hard work has paid off. We have produced two National Merit Finalists in a row and a possible third next year. We have raised our average ACT score (nearly a 24) to be the highest of any Downriver School and competitive with all the “elite” schools in the state. I am proud that three 8th graders scored a perfect score on the IOWA tests this year. I am proud that we have done this by working hard and not breaking rules. We have never even bent a state, MHSAA or diocesan policy or rule during my time here. We have not given scholarships to athletes or discounts on their tuition because of ability or grades, but only for financial need to any student. We did not steal people from other churches by offering them a cheaper rate if they came to mass here and donated here. Our goal was always to keep the highest quality education at the most affordable price and with great sacrifice and we did it. Congratulations to all of you for your commitment to this parish and school the past 12 years. At the same time, I have regrets. I wish I could have done more to bring people to mass each week. I regret not doing more to reach out to those who feel separated from the church. I apologize if I said or did anything that hurt anyone. I wish I could have done more to help the parish out financially. We still have a large debt, though at least we are paying our bills and addressing every financial issue in a responsible way. Yes, we could use more money in the collection each week and maybe I should have done more to make that happen. I do not regret keeping tuition affordable though. I regret not raising the money to finish off the project at the high school. I would have loved to raise the money to put up lights so the kids could have night games for football and soccer. But those regrets mean that there is more to do and you can keep the work going. There is so much more to do but you are capable of it. I ask that if you want to show your gratitude to me that you contribute to the Friends of Cabrini or the Fr. Clare Murphy Scholarship Fund in my name. I would appreciate that more than anything else. Over these final four months, there is a lot of work to do, so the time for looking glum at this news is over. Look up and let’s get to work. There will be time to say goodbye later, but for now we will do what makes this parish so special and that is growing in faith together. God bless you and thank you. Please mark your calendars Stations of the Cross: This ancient prayer of the church which reflects on the final moments in the life of Jesus, are prayed in the church every Friday night at 7pm during the season of Lent. You are most welcome to join us each week or when you can, but you are encouraged to try to at least make it once during Lent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confessions are heard every Saturday at 4pm in the church and every other Tuesday after the 7 pm mass. Please see the schedule as well for the Vicariate reconciliation services for Lent or the letter that was sent home to all registered families. The confessional is near the Mother Cabrini statue in the back corner of the church. All School Auction: If you have not received an invitation to the auction but would like to attend, please call the high school office and ask for the auction office. Someone will return your call and get information to you as quickly as possible. The auction is a fun night even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend. Space is limited so get your tickets today! Donations are always accepted if you are unable to attend but want to help the schools in purchasing new windows for the grade school and more Chromebooks for the high school. Thank you for your support. On Saturday, February 20th I took the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics. My goal was to raise $1 more than last year. God is so good, and due to an outpouring of love, support and monetary donations I raised $2,500, which was $600 more than last year. I want to thank everyone that made donations to Special Olympics on my behalf. I plan on taking the plunge again next year for the Jo Brighton Special Athletes. Included in the tour is a new exhibit of calligraphic pain"ngs, “A la Memoire des Enfants Deportes,” honoring the memories of thousands of Parisian children who were murdered in the death camps. We’ll also tour, and learn the history of Temple Beth El, Michigan’s first Jewish congrega"on, established in Detroit in 1850 and now located in Bloomfield Hills. CRS Rice Bowl: Caring for our lives, and the lives of others With the help of our Rice Bowls and Lenten Calendars, this week we focus on the sacredness and dignity of the human person. We learn in today’s readings from Isaiah, Paul and Luke, how God created us in his image and likeness, and that we need to care for each other in order to be the people God calls us to be. This week’s leg of our Lenten journey takes us to Rwanda and the story of a woman who understands the importance of providing good nutrition in the first years of her child’s life. Some “food for thought” during this third week of Lent: How does God’s invitation of grace guide us in our relationships? How do we cultivate the Spirit at work in those around us? How do we work to protect life from conception to natural death? CRS Rice Bowl is a faith-in-action program of Catholic Relief Services, the official international development and humanitarian relief agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. During this Year of Mercy, the Rice Bowl helps us better understand Catholic social teachings and how they help us model Christ in our relationships with others. CRS Rice Bowl is a 40-year tradition, with 75 percent of your donations being used to carry out CRS efforts in 40 nations, while 25 percent remains in our local community to assist food and shelter programs for the hungry and homeless. Visit www.crs.org to learn more. For daily CRS reflections, you’ll find instructions at the website for downloading a new phone app. FranciscanFacts FranciscanFacts “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.” Luke6:37 Jesus reserved his harshest words in the Gospels forthose who thoughtthey werespirituallysuperior toothers.Francis, too, recognizedthatthisfailingthreatenedthose whohadgivenupeverythingtofollowhiminhisGospelcommitmenttoalifeofpoverty, prayer, andpenance. Are you interested in other cultures and languages? Would you like to share your culture with a young person from another country? Private & Public School F-1 Exchange (PSE) is currently seeking families to open their homes and lives to an international exchange student. PSE strives to bring people together from around the world to share ideas and foster cross-cultural relationships and understanding. Our exchange students are eager to share their culture, customs and values with you, as well as learn about American culture by participating in your daily life and attending high school. It is only through kindness and generosity of families like yours that enables PSE students and families to share in an experience of a lifetime. Help promote international understanding and goodwill by hosting with PSE! Benefits of Hosting: • Expose your family to a new culture and language • Form a lasting international relationship • Enrich your community • Receive a monthly stipend to help assist with the costs of hosting PSE Exchange Students: • Want to learn about American culture and values • Have proficient English language skills • Bring their own spending money & insurance For more information, contact Theresa Ledesma at (248) 6704030; [email protected] or www.pse-edu.org HOST AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT St. Frances Cabrini High School is planning to recruit through the council on Standards for International Educational Travel, CSIET, several international students for the next school year. We have been approached by agencies interested in assisting us with the international students studying at Cabrini High School in preparing for a college career at a U.S. university. In order to enroll international students, we need to identify Cabrini Catholic Parish or School families who would be interested in providing home-stay housing. As a host family, you will share your home and family life with an international student as well as expose them to the best of American history and culture. Together, you will celebrate cultural differences and discover similarities with regards to values and beliefs. Most importantly, your family can make a difference in the life of an international student by fulfilling the dream of an American private educational experience and in providing a safe, Christian home away from home.
