Weekend at Birney’s
On May 30, 1998, I was ordained a
priest by Cardinal Adam Maida, at Blessed
Sacrament Cathedral. While the calendar
says it was 18 years ago, it seems like only
yesterday I was walking down the aisle of
the cathedral with my six classmates, completing what was a nine year formation program at Sacred Heart Seminary.
Prior to entering the seminary, I was
born to Jim and Grace Birney in 1971, the
sixth of eight children (7 boys and 1 girl). I
attended Our Lady Queen of Martyrs parish
(Beverly Hills) and elementary school, then
Brother Rice high school. After graduation
in 1989, I made my way to Sacred Heart
Seminary, for 4 years of college and 5
years of graduate school.
My parish assignments have included:
Associate Pastor- St. Lawrence, Utica
(1998 – 2001); Divine Child, Dearborn
(2001-2003); Pastor- Our Lady on the River
[former: Holy Cross, Marine City, St. Catherine, Algonac, St. Mark, Harsens Island].
This assignment also included Cardinal
Mooney High School, Marine City (20032007). For the past 9 years, I was the Direc-
tor of Priestly Vocations for the Archdiocese
of Detroit. In many ways, I was a traveling
salesman for the priesthood. I both promoted the priesthood through a variety of programs, and worked with the candidates who
were seeking to apply to the Seminary. It
was a ministry I had always desired and
was blessed to have for almost a decade. I
love being a priest, and very much enjoyed
promoting it and helping young men better
discern their vocation.
With every assignment, I have always
experienced the kindness and support of
the people of God. While each one posed
its own set of challenges, and while each
change was always somewhat bittersweet, I
have never had a ‘bad’ assignment.
I now look forward to serving as your
pastor, along with the help of Fr. Dominic
and the pastoral staff. I look forward to helping our parish schools continue to grow and
provide a quality catholic education for the
students. Please pray for all of us, that we
may serve you well, and help Christ become more visible in your life. St. Frances
Cabrini, pray for us!
God bless,
Fr. Tim

Thoughts of an Ordained Seminarian
By: Fr. Dom
It seems like only yesterday I was walking the pewabic tiled
halls of Sacred Heart Seminary as a seminarian, balancing
prayer time and classroom time. Now my first two weeks of
parish ministry are behind me. It is amazing how quickly time
can fly! I want to thank everyone for being so hospitable and
welcoming me into your parish family. I very much appreciate your generous and friendly hearts. As I continue to transition into the parish I look forward to meeting you all (maybe
sharing a meal or two…I am Italian after all ☺), spending lots
of time at the schools and doing all I can to help form and
deepen a relationship with Jesus!
I thought I would share some details about who I am so we
can come to know each other a little better. I was raised
Catholic in Sterling Heights and my home parish is St. Jane
Frances De Chantal. I am a product of public schooling,
(Stevenson High School) and also graduated from Oakland
University with a Bachelors of Science in Marketing. My vocation was discovered and developed while I was at Oakland.
If I had to describe in one sentence what moved me into the
priesthood it would be; a deep desire to know Jesus and
share Him with others. I spent six years at Sacred Heart
Seminary and was ordained 2 months ago. I am very excited
to be assigned to St. Frances Cabrini; a parish that I hear is
very active and has great opportunities for ministry.
Cabrini CSA Goal 2016:
Pledged to date:
$150,000.00
$108,657.00
Remaining to meet target:
$ 41,343.00
Thank you to those who have donated and to
those yet to donate. Please fill out the yellow
pledge sheet, place the pledge sheet and donation
in an envelope, and put it in the Sunday collection
or drop it off at the Rectory.
Thank you!
There is a saying; “a priest is a seminarian ordained”. That is
to say, the seminarian you are is the priest that you will be.
Sacred Heart impressed on me a deep commitment to
spread the Gospel message. Namely: Jesus Christ, the Son
of the Living God was born, lived, died and rose from the
dead to save us from our sinfulness! It is a message of mercy. However, this mercy is experienced in the context of a
relationship. My goal as a seminarian was to grow in relationship with Jesus and now as a priest my goal is to continue to grow while helping others do the same.
Know that you are all in my prayers and I am looking forward
to the years ahead. Peace!

Christian Service and More
Franciscan Facts
Rewards That Last
Words of St. Francis of Assisi
For although people lose everything they leave behind in this
world, they, nevertheless, carry with them the rewards of charity.
Scripture
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and
rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:20-21
Prayer
Jesus, you taught that worldly gratifications of power, prestige,
and money are gone when I leave this life, but loving and generous acts become treasures in heaven. Help me to live without the
distraction of always wanting more. I want to cultivate a simple life
and be more giving to others. Amen
Practice
I will ask the Holy Spirit to help me discern one way I can live
more simply and one way I can give more generously. (from Thirty
Days with St. Francis of Assisi)
For Info on Secular Franciscan Order , call Pat (313)381-1916.

(a personal journey through eight Holy Door Stations inside
and outside the Cathedral, offered during this Jubilee Year
of Mercy in union with basilicas in Rome and cathedrals
throughout the world), and guided tours of Old St. Mary’s

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus affirms that
to be a disciple we must also sit at his feet
and listen to Him. St. Vincent de Paul taught
that it is only in prayer that we can give selfless loving service to those who are poor.
This week, please say a special prayer each day for
the poor and forgotten in our parish.

HOST AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
St. Frances Cabrini High School is planning to recruit
through the council on Standards for International Educational Travel, CSIET, several international students for the next
school year. We have been approached by agencies interested in assisting us with the international students studying at
Cabrini High School in preparing for a college career at a U.S.
university.
In order to enroll international students, we need to identify Cabrini Catholic Parish or School families who would be
interested in providing home-stay housing.
As a host family, you will share your home and family life
with an international student as well as expose them to the
best of American history and culture. Together, you will celebrate cultural differences and discover similarities with regards to values and beliefs. Most importantly, your family
can make a difference in the life of an international student
by fulfilling the dream of an American private educational
experience and in providing a safe, Christian home away
from home.

summer camp!
We have openings for camp counselors, camp
activity specialists, team leaders, health officers, and

located near Lexington, Michigan on the beautiful shores of Lake
Huron.
Working at a summer camp is the most meaningful job you’ll

make a huge difference in the lives of children that need the Gospel
message.
Put your faith into action this summer at Camps Connect. More

PRAYERS FOR THOSE
IN MILITARY SERVICE
Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and
their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our
time of need. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Please God, grant them
courage when times are bleak. Grant them strength when they
feel weak. Grant them comfort, when they feel all alone. And
most of all, God, please…..BRING THEM ALL HOME!!!
