Evangelize? Why me?
Catholics and 14.7% identify as mainline Protestant. 22.8%
= 47 million people in our country, which is the highest it has
ever been and it is trending upwards. Many of the 22.8% of
“nones” used to identify as Catholics and now claim no religion. Of the US Adults who were baptized Catholic, 38% are
not practicing. We can see the effects as parishes close or
are joined. Sacramental records in Detroit and Lansing show
an alarming trend: Only 30% of Catholics attend Mass regularly, 33% drop in baptisms, 44% drop in Marriages, 58%
drop in RCIA, 59% drop in children receiving Catholic instruction. When asked if spreading the faith (evangelizing) is a
priority for you/your parish only 6% of Catholics responded
yes.
The numbers paint a disturbing picture. If these trends
keep up and nothing is done about it, there will no longer be
a priest shortage but a people shortage. The temptation for
us can often be to think: “it isn’t really a problem yet” or “I
don’t have to worry about it because somebody else will” or
“there is nothing I can do about it”. The statistics show the
disastrous effects of only thinking inwardly, of looking at the
situation with tunnel vision. We can no longer sit idly by and
hope this problem will get better by itself, or somebody else
will handle it. We have to approach the situation as members
of the Kingdom of God. As people filled with the Holy Spirit
and armed for battle. It needs to be our mission!

Recapping last article: The New Evangelization spreads
the Kerygma, the Good News of Jesus Christ; but is new in
its ardor, method and expression. Today our focus will be on
why we need this New Evangelization.
The short answer is; evangelization is our mission as
Catholics. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and, I am with you always, even to the end of
the age” Matthew 28:19-20. Jesus’ life was about evangelizing, so we must be about evangelizing. However, the New
Evangelization is unquestionably needed because of the
state of our Church in so many places. The New Evangelization is needed because we as Catholics can no longer afford
to be about maintenance, we need to be about mission! Our
focus needs to be about “going out into the vineyard” and
bringing people into the Church, both people who never
heard the Gospel and those who have left the Church. Let’s
take a quick look at some statistics that will help define the
problem. These statistics will be localized to the US population for brevity’s sake, but Europe is in a far worse state than

Dementia is not a disease. It is an umbrella term to describe a group of symptoms that impair cognitive function,
memory, and behavior. Dementia symptoms include
memory loss, confusion, and personality and behavioral
changes that impact the person’s social and working life.
This presentation will look at the most common types of
dementia and the characteristics of each. Then we will look
at building a support team of professionals and service providers to help you and your loved one on this journey.
Nearly 50% of caregivers die before the person with
dementia because they don’t have the proper support and
help. Learn about who needs to be on your team and the
role they will play: medical, legal, financial, care support.
During the rest of the series you will meet and hear from
representatives from each of these categories and how they
can help ease the journey for all.

Patience and Humility
Words of St. Francis of Assisi Where there is patience
and humility there is neither anger nor worry.
Scripture Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or
conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than oneself. Philippians 2:3
Prayer Lord God, your own Son patiently endured suffering and humbly submitted to your will for the sake of all he
came to save. I too want to seek your will. Let me also work
for the good of others as I interact with them, so that they
will have no cause to worry over their well-being in relationship to me. Please help me to practice such patience in my
daily dealings so that no one perceives impatience from me
or is provoked to impatience by me. Amen
Practice If I am struggling to be patient with someone, I will
examine my thoughts to discover if selfishness or a superior
attitude is impeding my good care of them. (from Thirty
Days with St. Francis of Assisi,)

World Youth Day
Krakow, Poland 2016
In 1985, Pope John Paul II invited young people from
around the world to join him in Rome to observe the United
Nations International Year of the Youth. Ever since that momentous occasion, Catholic youth from around the globe
have continued to gather together and celebrate WYD.
“Blessed are the Merciful for they shall obtain Mercy”
was the theme of WYD 2016. This scripture verse will ring in
my ears forever as we heard it over and over this past year
during our preparation and through out the duration of the
WYD week through songs, reflections and messages from
the Pope, Bishops and others. This scripture has taken on a
new meaning in my life, it helped me to realize how truly
blessed I am and how badly God wants and needs me to
continue to share who I am and my gifts and talents with
others especially the youth of the church. No matter how
dark the world may seem at times the love and mercy of
Christ will prevail over all darkness.
Though the pilgrimage in Krakow has sadly come to and
end, our journey continues. But before I close I would like to
thank all the pilgrims for opening their hearts to God, myself
and one another. I would especially like to thank Tim Kozlo
and Peggy Durocher for all the support they provided me
personally and to our whole group before, during and after
the pilgrimage, their playfulness, leadership, compassion
and faith are a blessing to so many. Thank you to all the
parents and parishioners who supported this pilgrimage not
only financially but through lots of love and prayers what a
gift you gave so many. Thank you God for good health and
the gift of faith that made this pilgrimage possible for myself
and our whole group.
GOD IS SO GOOD……. ALL THE TIME!
Therese Tardiff
Below is a reflection from one of our participants, Phil
Trela. More reflections will follow in the weeks ahead.
WYD 2016 in Krakow was my first WYD experience. Before arriving, I did not know what to expect. I entered with
an open heart and an open mind. What I found was nothing short of inspiraonal! We walked through the streets of
Krakow in large crowds; crowds full of young people from
across the globe. The amazing thing was that all of the people we saw were excited. They were excited to be in Krakow; excited to hear the pope’s messages; excited to share
their faith with one another. Groups were channg and
cheering all week from the me we boarded our flight to
Krakow from Frankfort, unl we made it to our hotel the
final night. It was like being at a sporng event, that’s the
level of excitement that was in the air. The only thing is
that there was no compeon; no one trying to be be(er
than someone else. Everyone was there to cheer for Jesus
and one another. It was inspiraonal to see millions of
young people li.ing each other up and sharing their faith.
I came to find out that this is exactly what WYD is: an
opportunity to stand in solidarity, stand together in faith,
and bring more peace, joy and mercy into the world.

HOST AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT
St. Frances Cabrini High School is planning to recruit
through the council on Standards for International Educational Travel, CSIET, several international students for the next
school year. We have been approached by agencies interested in assisting us with the international students studying at
Cabrini High School in preparing for a college career at a U.S.
university.
In order to enroll international students, we need to identify Cabrini Catholic Parish or School families who would be
interested in providing home-stay housing.
As a host family, you will share your home and family life
with an international student as well as expose them to the
best of American history and culture. Together, you will celebrate cultural differences and discover similarities with regards to values and beliefs. Most importantly, your family
can make a difference in the life of an international student
by fulfilling the dream of an American private educational
experience and in providing a safe, Christian home away
from home.

Greetings to my sisters and brothers
at St. Frances Cabrini!
I am very happy and excited to begin
my pastoral internship here and minister
as a seminarian in the life of this incredible and vibrant parish faith community. I will be spending the
next year (August 2016- August 2017) living at the
parish and being lead by Fr. Tim, Fr. Dominic, the
staff, and all you, the parishioners of Cabrini. I completed three years of seminary formation at Sacred
Heart Seminary, just recently completing my first year
in the graduate School of Theology.
I am 27 years old and have one sister who is 25.
My parents are both from the Middle East, my mom
grew up in Baghdad, Iraq and my father is originally
from Syria. I was born and raised in Southfield, but
after the passing of my grandfather when I was 12, I
moved to Sterling Heights (Macomb County) where I
went to Stevenson High School and college at Oakland University, where I majored in History/ Political
Science. I worked for eight years before coming into
seminary in customer service related jobs. I enjoy
reading, watching movies, languages, traveling, and
spending time with others.
I am blessed and grateful to God for allowing
me to enter into your home and family here at Cabrini.
I am looking forward to meeting you all and through

my own experience of being involved in different liturgical functions, helping teach in the schools, and all
the other activities in the life of the parish. I know I
will gain a plentitude of valuable lessons and experiences that will help me grow in my own seminary formation. So what am I? You may be wondering what
to call me. I am not a Father yet, or Deacon, or religious brother, but just “Zaid”. The name Zaid is a
Middle Eastern name, which means assurance, it
rhymes with the word paid and my last name Chabaan
rhymes with Cinnabon (I hope that makes it easy!)
I am humbled and grateful to God to be at
Cabrini. I am excited to walk alongside each of you as
we journey towards our earthly pilgrimage to the
Heavenly Jerusalem. May you be blessed and be a
blessing.
In His peace,
Zaid Chabaan

as hurting couples, found hope.

on reaching out to hurting married couples longing for renewal and
hope. Metro Detroit has multiple English and Spanish programs
scheduled this year, each beginning with a weekend on the following dates:
