Volume 56, Issue 13 August 3, 2015 Selichot, a Service to Reflect, Remember, and Forgive B Fighting Hunger, One Hairnet at a Time N umbers tell a story. Numbers like 12.5 — the percentage of D.C.-area households that cannot afford or do not have access to nutritionally adequate and safe food. And 163,944 — the number of meals packed by over 800 WHC Hunger Project volunteers this past fiscal year in an effort to help close the food gap. Numbers aren’t everything, however. Hunger and food scarcity also have a face. Many of those faces we never see, like the four-year-old child standing in line with her mother at Manna Food Center to pick up their monthly allotment of food. Other faces enter our homes and lives through the screens of our televisions, tablets, and phones. Such was the case in late April, when protests and civil disobedience forced citywide curfews in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray. Businesses were forced to close early, workers lost wages, and access to public transportation was limited — a near perfect storm for hunger. The WHC Hunger Project realized that with some outreach and coordination, their efforts could have a wider Continued on page 3. egin the process of asking forgiveness from God and loved ones by joining us for Selichot on Saturday, September 5 at Temple. The prayers of Selichot, recited the week before Rosh Hashanah on Saturday evening, focus on the theme of forgiveness and spiritually prepare us to enter the High Holy Day season. Tradition tells us that Selichot emerged after King David foresaw the destruction of the Temple. He reached out to God asking how to avert this devastation. God replied, “When suffering will befall the Jews because of their sins, they should gather before me in complete unity. Together, they shall confess their sins and recite the order of selichot, and I will answer their prayers.” Led by Cantors Manevich and Bortnick, our candlelit service will include poetry and musical prayers that will inspire to you to reflect on the past year. All are welcome to start the evening with us at 5:30 pm for a delicious dinner hosted by the EmptyNesters auxiliary. The cost is $30 per person, and payment is required in advance. You can register for dinner online and pay with a credit card Continued on page 4. “Attend” Friday Night Services — From Anywhere W hether you’re feeling under the weather or are traveling on the other side of the globe, if you have an internet connection, you can connect to Shabbat at WHC. Mazel tov to the amazing Brotherhood softball team, the Washington Hebrew Nationals, for winning the 2015 Suburban Maryland Synagogue Softball League championship — their third title in a row and their fourth in five years! The team compiled a 19-1 record and avenged their only regular season loss, winning the championship game against B’nai Shalom of Olney. They put the final “W” in the record books when shortstop Brian Lustig hit the game-winning RBI in walk-off fashion, scoring pitcher Adam Weber. At a barbecue hosted by Brotherhood at the Julia Bindeman Suburban Center in July, the players and their families celebrated the camaraderie and talents of the 2015 “H-Nats” team: co-captains Ron Winson and Rob Bindeman; and Jon Barr, Jason Cohen, Danny Cole, Kevin Dinallo, Marc Goldberg, Bob London, Brian Lustig, Roger Mermelstein, Jay Samuels, Dan Smith, Jon Walsh, Adam Washeka, Adam Weber, and Jonathan Young. The Hebrew Nats may have a few roster spots available next season. We invite experienced players to contact Rob Bindeman, [email protected]. Tov Corner: WHC Hunger Project (continued from page 1) impact. We now have a partnership with Maryland Food Bank, and are able to have our meals distributed throughout much of Maryland. For three years, WHC Hunger Project volunteers have taken their place on our assembly lines — in hairnets, gloves, and aprons — in times of crisis and to ensure a regular source of nourishment for the residents who rely upon our food partners, including the Capital Area Food Bank, SOME, Manna Food Center, and the Maryland Food Bank. We are at 442,368 meals and counting. There is a space — and a hairnet — for you to help. Visit whctemple.org/HungerProject to learn more and participate. WHC’s Tikkun Olam Values Fund (TOV) provides funding for programs and opportunities that support the prophetic vision of social justice: to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and care for the disenfranchised. TOV’s programs offer our entire membership opportunities to serve and volunteer, and do their own part to repair the world. For further information, please contact Naomi Abelson, [email protected] or 202-895-6328. 9:00 am Rabbi Lustig Morning Service Rabbi Lustig, Cantor Manevich 10:30 am ¡¡ Bar Mitzvah of Micah Kriesberg Friday, August 21 Shabbat Service Rabbi Lustig, Cantor Manevich Saturday, August 22 Early Torah Study Cantor Manevich Morning Service Cantor Manevich 6:00 pm 9:00 am 10:30 am Upcoming Events Below is a sample of upcoming events at WHC. New Class Prepares Juniors and Seniors for Life at College WHC is thrilled to announce Post Confirmation, a new program for all 11th and 12th graders (whether or not they have been Confirmed). Designed to equip students with information and knowledge that will help them in college, the program will include discussions about what is going on socially and politically in Israel; the BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) movement and current conversations about it on college campuses; and the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe and how to appropriately engage (or disengage from) those who may share these views. We will also discuss Jewish attitudes toward gender identity, sexuality, and relationships and how the values of respect and kindness might play out in a college dorm room. Creating a sense of community while also being respectful of busy schedules, Post Confirmation connects students with clergy and educators and gives them the opportunity to serve as role models for younger teens on retreats and trips. For more information or to register your junior or senior, contact Ira Miller, [email protected] or 301354-3209. No RSVP is needed for the service and dessert. 4 Those old, no longer used, and yes, even broken eyeglasses in your drawer can mean the gift of better vision for someone in need. Earlier this year, the Prime Timers announced their support of Lions Clubs International’s Lions Recycle for Sights program and began collecting eyeglasses you no longer wear: prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses, and plastic and metal frames. Children’s glasses are especially needed. The reception areas of both Temple and JBSC have Lions Recycle for Sight boxes for you to place donated eyewear. The Prime Timers thank you for your continued support of their efforts to bring the gift of sight to children and adults in low- and middle-income communities who lack access to vision services. For more information, please contact Dotty or Lou Kornhauser, 301-718-2524.
