n March 20, 1911, 13-year-old
Andrei Yushchinsky was found
stabbed to death in a cave on the
outskirts of Kiev. Four months later,
Russian police arrested Mendel Beilis, a
37-year-old father of five who worked
as a clerk in a brick factory nearby, and
charged him not only with Andrei’s
murder, but also with the Jewish ritual
murder of a Christian child. Despite
the fact that there was no evidence
linking him to the crime and that he
had a solid alibi, Beilis was imprisoned
for more than two years before being
brought to trial.
The Beilis case aroused furor and exposed rabid anti-Semitism at the highest levels of Tsarist Russia. It will be the
focus Edmund Levin’s Amram Scholar
Series lecture at Temple on Sunday,
March 1 at 10:30 am, when he joins us
to discuss his book, A Child of Christian
Blood. Described as the most sensational court case of its time, the Beilis trial
attracted worldwide attention, with
Arthur Conan Doyle, Thomas Hardy,
H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw,
Thomas Mann, and the archbishops of
York and Canterbury publicly protesting the actions of the Russian government. The story ultimately served as the

identity through the study and discussion of Ari Shavit’s My Promised Land.
With more than 300 congregants
engaged in our Conversations, many
have asked if we could take our discussion “on the road” and continue it in
Israel. We are delighted to announce
an adult opportunity to embrace Israel
from June 13 - June 24 with Rabbi

European Coordinator for the
Foundation for Ethnic Understanding
(FFEU), will speak at Temple on Tuesday, February 24 at 7:00 pm as part
of an important community program
focused on how Jews and Muslims in
Europe can move forward together after the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.

that Muslims and Jews in France and
Europe are not destined to be enemies,
but instead must build solid ties of
communication and cooperation. She
will share her recent experience leading
an inspirational Muslim-Jewish delegation at the Paris Unity March following

Mah Jongg Tournament Returns to JBSC March 15
WHC Sisterhood and the Parents Committee of the Rabbi Joseph Weinberg ECC &
Kindergarten are co-sponsoring their annual
spring Mah Jongg Tournament on Sunday,
March 15 at JBSC. Doors open at 9:30 am
and game play begins at 10:00 am. The cost
is $50 per person which includes lunch and
six rounds of play. We welcome anyone with
enough experience to comfortably play at
least four games per hour and follow the National Mah Jongg League rules. The

Alexander Vinogradov

An Update on Our Efforts to Support Abram Simon
Elementary School
There is so much happening at
Abram Simon Elementary School. The
school underwent a renovation in 2013
and now has larger classrooms, brightly
painted walls, and a recently completed
state-of-the-art playground. There is
also a new principal this year, Kim
Spence (see below), who is passionate
about her professional learning communities—weekly meetings to discuss
what’s working in the classroom, and
what’s not. She says, “we look at the
academic condition of each student,
one at a time, and discuss how to support them.”
WHC’s volunteer projects continue
at the school, and we are grateful to everyone who gives their time, resources,
and attention to the children at the
Southeast D.C. public school named
for WHC’s second senior rabbi. Below
are some of the efforts our energy and
resources support.
Book Buddies: This year we are
working with nearly half of the second
grade students, many of whom were
among our book buddies last year as
first graders.
Thanksgiving Baskets: WHC
congregants generously donated time
and funding on Mitzvah Monday so
that every Simon family — there
are over 200 of them — could
enjoy a lovely Thanksgiving
dinner.
MLK Day of Service: The weather
outside is freezing but our little
Head Start students at Simon
have brand new cozy blankets,
lovingly made by MLK Day of
Service volunteers, for use during
nap time.
Van Ness Knitters: Handmade hats and
sweaters from the WHC women who
call themselves the Van Ness Knitters
arrived at the school just in time for this
winter’s arctic blasts. These ladies have
been knitting for the Simon students
for 10 years!
Winter Camp: That’s right, winter
camp! We were excited to provide
funding that enabled 14 Simon alumni
to attend this new teen program at
Camp Moss Hollow over winter break
where students learned study skills and
received special mentoring. The cost of
winter camp is approximately $300 per
student.
Summer Camp: And of course there is
summertime at Camp Moss Hollow.
Last year, WHC sponsored 43 students,
who each spent a week at this beautiful
camp in the Shenendoah Valley. It costs
$350 per student, and we are hopeful
that your generous contributions will
once again enable many children to
have this experience.
Dayeinu!! Any of the above projects
on its own would have brought joy to
the students and families. However,
WHC is blessed with a congregation
that consistently remembers the Abram
Simon School, which enables the
committee and its volunteers to do so
much more. We thank you so much for
all you have done and continue to do.

I’m writing to introduce myself to you and your congregants at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. I am Kim Spence,
the new Principal at the Abram Simon School, and in my first few months here, I’ve been delighted to learn about the wonderful partnership your congregation has fostered over the years with my new school.
What a blessing it is to have such a reliable community partner, your congregation’s thoughtfulness and commitment has
been evident from the day I arrived here, from the flowers which unexpectedly arrived here our first day of school, the Book
“Buddies” who show up weekly to work with our second grade students, the Thanksgiving baskets so generously donated to
all of our families, the winter camp and the cozy handmade sweaters...the list just keeps on growing!
So I want to thank you and all of my new friends at Washington Hebrew Congregation, both personally and on behalf of

Triumph and Tragedy of Israel,” we
will engage face-to-face with authors,
artists, social activists, and scholars
who all struggle, just as we do, with
the complexities and wonders of Israel. This is a trip focusing not on siteseeing but on insight building, a trip
which will look at the difficult questions and how divergent narratives
challenge us and our assumptions.
Our carefully crafted itinerary will
follow the themes of My Promised
Land and has been developed in conjunction with Julian Resnick, a gifted
educator and one time WHC scholarin-residence, who is the current
international leader of the Habonim
Zionist movement. This engaging
opportunity to continue our conversation will be accompanied by cultural
and culinary experiences that are far
from the ordinary: lunch at one of
Israel’s best boutique wineries, overnights at Israel’s most celebrated spas,
an afternoon at Jerusalem’s colorful
marketplace Machaneh Yehudah, and
the opportunity to purchase ingredients for a cooking class and dinner
feast with one of Israel’s most creative
culinary artists.

Grieving a Recent Loss?
WHC Bereavement Group Offers Support
Grief can be devastating. Basic beliefs are challenged, emotions
can feel out of control, and energy is depleted. We know that
shared experience and education can be helpful during bereavement. WHC’s Bereavement Support Group, facilitated by Erica
Berger, LICSW, provides mutual support and education to those
who have experienced a loss during the last 18 months.
Limited in size to eight participants, the program, sponsored by
the Edlavtich-Tyser Family Relations Forum, will be held at Temple at 7:00 pm on Tuesdays, from April 7– May 12. It recognizes
each person’s unique way of grieving and provides a confidential
and respectful environment for the bereaved to explore his or her
feelings, begin working through complex issues of loss, and start to
heal. If you would like to participate, please contact Layne Weiss,
