ising 8th – 12th graders are invited
to spend part of their summer
learning about hunger, food stability,
and the environment through WHC’s
The Motzi Fellowship. This special
program brings teens to One Acre
Farm where they will plant and harvest
a variety of vegetables. Evening programs at Temple and JBSC will help
teens learn about hunger in the D.C.
area and beyond.
The Motzi Fellowship is offered
twice during the summer: Monday,
June 15 – Friday, June 19 and
Monday, July 20 – Friday, July
24. The cost for each week is $500
for WHC members and $600 for

that is once again making headlines.
Anti-Semitic acts, which are being seen
more frequently in the news, affect the
Jewish community — both here and
around the world. Many of us are asking Why now? Are we hearing echoes of
the past? Is this different from what we’ve
previously experienced?
Find out at “Inside the Issues,” on
Sunday, June 14 at 9:45 am at Temple,
when Alan Ronkin, regional director of
AJC — American Jewish Committee,
will join us to discuss what is happening in Europe, what can be done now,
and what the future holds. Len Biegel,

Elaborate Festival Unites Jewish
and Korean Cultures
M
arriage is the uniting of
two people, and in Korean
culture, a deeper merging of
two extended families into one.
Through the lens of a wedding
ceremony — featuring traditional
wedding clothing and a glimpse
into Korea’s unique marriage
customs — the Shalom Yerushalayim
Cultural Festival on Monday, June
22 at 7:30 pm at Temple will tell
the story of the merger of our two
peoples — Jewish and Korean.
This festive evening of togetherness
is organized by the Korean Christians
for Shalom Jerusalem (KCSJ), a coalition of Korean Christians who believe
in the biblical importance of the Jewish
people and peace in Jerusalem. The
Shalom Yerushalayim Cultural Festival
commemorates the growing bonds
between the Jewish community and
Korean Christians.

“If You Build It” — Providing a Shelter
at Bread for the City Orchard
What do you do when a 2.75 acre
non-profit organic fruit orchard in
Beltsville, Maryland needs shelter from
the elements for its volunteers? Build
one, of course! This year, WHC expanded its relationship with Bread for the
City (BFTC), a local organization that
provides food, clothing, health care, legal
care, and social services to D.C.’s neediest
residents, by constructing a pavilion with
tables and benches for their fruit orchard.
The City Orchard, with its 2,500
fruit-bearing trees and bushes, yields
upwards of 45,000 pounds of fresh fruit
each year for BFTC’s two pantry locations. Two years ago, volunteers from
Washington Hebrew Congregation planted some of those trees, and they now bear
fresh fruit for some of the nearly 8,500
people BFTC feeds every month. The success of City Orchard brought about a
new need: storage for gleaned produce, shelter for volunteers, and space for community educational programs.
With generous funding from TOV, SmithGroupJJR, and Sandy Spring Builders, WHC
volunteers had the resources and tools they
needed to construct not only a beautiful pavilion
at City Orchard, but also plenty of picnic tables,
benches, and chairs. For the first time, City
Orchard now has a space to teach clients — and
volunteers — about the importance of healthy, local, and sustainable food through nutrition programs, gardening classes, food sourcing lectures,
cooking demonstrations, and harvesting efforts.

Summer Havdalah Celebration to Feature
Award-Winning Musician
Everyone is welcome at the
EmptyNesters annual summer
Havdalah service on Saturday, July
18 at the Julia Bindeman Suburban
Center. The evening beings with a
reception at 6:00 pm with wine, cold
drinks, and nibbles — it’s a wonderful opportunity to mix and mingle.
We will have our Havdalah service
and then sit down to a scrumptious
dinner.
Seth Kibel, one of the midAtlantic’s premier woodwind
specialists, will entertain us for the
evening. Working with some of the
best bands in klezmer, jazz, swing, and
more, Mr. Kibel, has made a name for
himself in our region and beyond. He
has won 28 Washington Area Music
Awards (Wammies), including Best
World Music Instrumentalist and Best
Jazz Instrumentalist
And we’re not just having fun, we’re
doing good! For the last three years,
we’ve had a successful tradition of
asking Havdalah attendees to write a
voluntary check to a worthy charity.

The year
is 1985.

obeys, though he does not understand.

and Become is screened at their Temple
luncheon.
In Live and Become, when one Jewish boy, marked for a rescue flight to
Israel, dies, a Christian boy secretly
takes his place with the tacit cooperation of both the dead boy’s mother,
and his own. At nine years of age,
Schlomo is too young to realize his life
is being saved. He knows only that he
is being cruelly separated from his real
mother and that he must never ever
reveal his true identity to anyone.
