Volume 56, Issue 1 “Inside the Issues” with WHC January 5, 2015 NAACP President and CEO to Address the Congregation at MLK Shabbat O T he WHC EmptyNesters and Community Issues-Social Action Committee are excited to present a new congregational program — “Inside the Issues,” a unique, in-depth discussion of a current issue led by WHC members with expert knowledge. Join us at Temple on Sunday, January 25 at 9:45 am for the inaugural discussion, “Our Immigration System — Myths and Realities.” Immigration is a subject that has garnered considerable attention in recent news. It is difficult to discern, however, if the information we see and hear is complete, accurate, and unbiased. Our speakers, retired United States immigration court judge Joan Churchill and Peter Levinson, who served on the staffs of both the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy and the Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees, and International Law in the House of Representatives, will deliver the facts, plain and simple, based on years of working with legislators, lawyers, judges, and immigrants. Come with questions, and bring your appetite: bagels, a selection of cheese, and coffee will be served. The cost is $5 per person, payable at the door. Space is limited and registration is required: whctemple.org/inside. For more information, contact Beth Donaldson, [email protected] or 202-895-6309. n the 60th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision on Brown v. Washington Hebrew Congregation will welcome Mr. Brooks and members of our neighbor churches to Temple on Friday, January 16 when we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The evening will begin with a dinner at 6:00 pm and continue at a special 7:30 pm Shabbat service. To join us for dinner or sponsor a table for our guests, please register online, whctemple.org/mlk_shabbat, or contact Layne Weiss, lweiss@whctemple. org or 202-895-6307. Mr. Brooks, who will address the congregation at the Shabbat service, is a pioneering lawyer, human rights activist, and fourth-generation ordained minister. A strong advocate for public education, affordable healthcare, and fiscal responsibility, Mr. Brooks has worked to pass legislation enabling preContinued on page 7. “Irresistible” Study of J.D. Salinger at Amram Lecture on January 11 T homas Beller, the engaging author of J.D. Salinger: The Escape Artist, a new biography that The New York Times hailed as “sensitive and irresistible,” “lyrical and precise,” will launch WHC’s Amram Scholar Series winter program on Sunday, January 11 at 10:30 am. Mr. Beller’s study of Salinger is the first to make a strong case for the central role of Jewishness in the novelist’s childhood: in the formation of his literary sensibility, in the tenor of his family life, and in the shaping of his worldview. Himself a humorous and insightful writer, Mr. Beller offers new understanding of Salinger’s predicaments of assimilation, including the irony of his father Solomon — the son of a rabbi — making his fortune as an importer of “picnic hams” and cheeses, a business in which he vainly hoped to Thomas Beller involve his son. According to The New York Times, “because Beller gets New York with all its nuances of class and money, he understands the Salinger family’s triumphant rise from Upper Broadway to Park Avenue and what it must have meant not just to the proud parents, Continued on page 7. Adult Education (continued from page 2) Despite years of religious school as children, are you unsure how to find meaning in our faith and culture as an adult? Issues that may not have been relevant decades ago suddenly are filled with new meaning. “12 Questions: A (Re)Introduction to Adult-Level Judaism” is a learning community for adults — Jewish and non-Jewish — who have questions about Jewish identity, beliefs, culture, and customs. It’s an environment to discover (and rediscover) the relevance of Judaism in our lives. Join us each week at Temple for dinner and discussion from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, beginning Monday, February 2. For more information or to register, visit whctemple.org/12_jewish_questions or contact Marsha Humphries, [email protected] or 202-895-6303. 4 January 2015 Sunday Monday Key: Tuesday Wednesday Thursday (CON-CONV) Congregational Conversations (ECC) Early Childhood Centers (ET) Edlavitch-Tyser Family Relations Forum (HS) Hebrew School (OUT) Out of the Building (PMP) Pollin Music Program (PT) Prime Timers (RS) Religious School (SIS) Sisterhood (M) Macomb (B) Julia Bindeman Suburban Center (AS) Amram Scholar Series (B to B) Back to Basics (BRO) Brotherhood (CSH) Carrie Simon House (CISA) Community Issues/Social Action (CC) Couples Club 1 Offices Closed (M&B) Friday Saturday 2 ECC Winter Break (M&B) 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) ECC Winter Break (M&B) 3 9:00am Early Torah (M) 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 5:30pm Lay-Led Service (M) 6:00pm Shabbat Service (M) New Years Day Religious School Winter Break (M&B) 4 ECCs Back in Session (M&B) 5 6 Hebrew School Back in Session (B) 11 7:00pm SIS Board Mtg (B) 7:00pm CON-CONV Keynote with Nurit Shein (M) 6:00pm Shabbat Service led by WHC Teens (M) 7:00pm WHECTY “Clash of the Classes” (B) 7:00pm The Red Stone (M) 6:00pm Tot Shabbat (B) 5:30pm Havdalah (M) 7:00pm CON-CONV “Pray & Stay” Dinner (M) 12 7:00pm WHC Academy (M) 13 7:00pm CON-CONV (B) 7:00pm 9th Grade Parent Meeting (B) 7:30pm B to B (M) 14 9:30am B to B (B) 10:00am SIS Bridge (B) 10:00am Conversational Hebrew (B) 15 6:30pm CSH Vol. Mtg (M) 5:00pm Couples Club (OUT) 7:30pm B to B (B) 19 7:30pm B to B (M) 20 ECCs Closed (M&B) 9:30am B to B (B) 21 12:00pm SIS Lunch Mtg (OUT) 10:00am MLK Day of Service (M) 7:30pm MLK Shabbat Svc with Cornell William Brooks, NAACP President (M) 10:00am Conversational Hebrew (B) 22 7:30pm B to B (B) 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 9:45am “Inside the Issues: Our Immigration System — Myths and Realities” (M) 9th Gr Retreat 26 9:00am Early Torah (M) 17 23 7:00pm NFTY’s 75th Anniversary – Alumni Reunion Concert (M) 9:00am Early Torah (M) 24 5:30pm Lay-Led Service (M) 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 6:00pm Shirei Shabbat Service (M) 5:30pm Havdalah (M) 7:00pm 2239 Metro Minyan (OUT) 7:00pm Boomers Event (OUT) MLK Jr. Holiday 7:00pm WHC Academy (M) 16 Dinner (M) 7:30pm CISA Mtg (M) Offices Closed (M&B) 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 5:30pm Lay-Led Svc (M) 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 6:00pm MLK Shabbat 10:00am SIS program (B) 2:00pm CON-CONV (M) 25 10 10:30am Shabbat Service (M) 12:00pm CON-CONV (OUT) 9:45am Divorcing with Dignity (M) 9:00am Early Torah (M) 5:30pm Lay-Led Service (M) 12:30pm Jr. ETY (B) 18 9 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 9:00am SIS Cooking for Homeless (B) 10:30am Amram Lecture with Thomas Beller No Religious School (M&B) 8 6:00pm WHECTY Board Mtg (B) 7:00pm WHC Academy (M) 9:45am Divorcing with Dignity (M) 7 Hebrew School Back in Session (M) 9th Gr Retreat 27 7:00pm WHC Mobile (8th & 9th Grades) and Confirmation Program – optional dinner at 6:30pm (B) 7:30pm B to B (M) 9:30am B to B (B) 7:30pm B to B (B) 28 10:00am Conversational Hebrew (B) 29 10:30am SIS Mah Jongg (B) 30 9:00am Early Torah (M) 31 5:00pm Tot Shabbat (M) 10:30am 5:30pm Shabbat Service (M) Lay-Led Service (M) 5:30pm 6:00pm Shabbat Havdalah (M) Service (M) Confirmation Retreat NFTY-MAR MAJYK (through Sunday) WHC Thanks Its Generous Contributors H.
