Clinton Years with Scholar

ith the potential White House
return of Hillary and Bill Clinton after next fall’s Presidential election, the Amram Scholar Series will
examine The Age of Clinton: America
in the 1990s with a lecture by political historian Gil Troy on Wednesday,
December 16 at 7:00 pm at Temple.
A professor of history at McGill
University and a visiting scholar at
the Brookings Institution, Dr. Troy is
the author of 11 books and of weekly
columns in The Daily Beast and The
Jerusalem Post.
In assessing the 1990s, Dr. Troy says
the Clinton Presidency personified the
decade’s “noble aspirations, notable
achievements, missed opportunities,
and embarrassing excesses.” And in
exploring Bill Clinton’s quest for peace
in the Middle East, he depicts the
President’s love for Israel and fury at
Yasir Arafat for undermining the Oslo
Peace Process.
Dr. Troy joins our Amram lineup at this timely political moment
in cooperation with the Jewish Book
Council.

on the role of religion in contemporary life, Bruce Feiler
will join us at Temple on Wednesday, December 2 at
7:00 pm for a Congregational Conversations Keynote
focusing on “What I Have Learned from the Abrahamic
Journey.”
An advocate of Abrahamic dialogue, Mr. Feiler held
the first “Abraham Summit” at Washington Hebrew
Congregation in the fall of 2002. In the aftermath of the
attacks on September 11, he created a dialogue program called Abraham Salons, informal discussion groups that are a safe space for
interfaith dialogue and are designed to build trust between members of different
religious groups. More than 5,000 of Mr. Feiler's Abraham Salons have been held
around the world.
During his Keynote, Mr. Feiler will walk us through the history of Abraham,
the shared ancestor of Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and the defining and divisive role he plays for all three faith communities. In his search for understanding,

Extraordinary Year at WHC
As you saw in our recent
Annual Report, last year
was an extraordinary time
of connection and innovation for our Congregation.

dynamic new initiatives that
enabled us to learn, give

of Yad B’Yad, the WHC Annual Fund, co-chaired by Past Presidents Sherry
Bindeman Kahn and Bob Shapiro. Membership revenues and fees support only
77 percent of our annual operating costs, so Yad B’Yad helps bridge that gap.

Friendship Place has requested new or gently used winter coats and new long
underwear (large sizes XL and XXL are a priority) for men and women. WHC is a
charter member of Friendship Place, which addresses homelessness through innovative programs that empower participants to rebuild their lives.
Blanket and Coat Drive for Syrian Refugees – through 12/5
Nearly 12 million people have been displaced by the current conflict in Syria.
We are collecting blankets and coats to help some of them stay warm this winter.
Organized by Help Syrian Refugees, the blankets and coats we donate will be sent
to refugee camps in Turkey.

Moses Leff will speak about her newly
published book, The Archive Thief, at
the next gathering of the Sisterhood
Literary Group on Friday, December
4 at 10:00 am at JBSC.
The Archive Thief is the true story of
Jewish historian Zosa Szajkowski, who,
in the aftermath of the Holocaust,
gathered up tens of thousands of docu-
ments from Nazi buildings in Berlin,
and later, public archives and private
synagogues in France, and moved them
all, illicitly, to New York. Part detective
story, part analysis of the construction of history, The Archive Thief offers
a window into the debates over the
rightful ownership of contested Jewish
archives and the powerful ideological,
economic, and psychological forces
that have made Jewish scholars care so
deeply about preserving the remnants
of their past.
