Volume 55, Issue 18 October 20, 2014 Hidden During Holocaust, Dori Katz to Speak at Kristallnacht Service W e are honored to have Holocaust survivor Dori Katz share her story with us at the annual Interfaith Kristallnacht Commemoration Service at St. Albans Parish (3001 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC) on Tuesday, November 11 at 7:30 pm. Professor Katz’s talk is presented by WHC’s Amram Scholar Series in memory of the night in 1938 that the Nazis unleashed their first violent assault against Jews in Germany. Professor Katz was only two years old in 1942 when her father was arrested and sent to Auschwitz, and just three when her mother sent her to live, first for a year and a half with a Catholic family under a Christian identity, and then after a brief reunion, in an orphanage for nearly two years. She survived the horrors of the Holocaust hidden in plain sight. “For you, it was nothing; you were only a child. You didn’t suffer. You don’t even remember.” Those were the words, Dori Katz says, she heard all the time from her mother when she referred to their experience in Belgium during World War II. But Katz did remember fragments, and she had questions. Questions that her mother wouldn’t answer; requests for stories that were too painful for her mother to share. Continued on page 6. Hand in Hand for a Sustainable Future: Introducing the Yad B’Yad Annual Fund W ith a new Jewish year underway, Washington Hebrew Congregation is pleased to introduce Yad B’Yad: The WHC Annual Fund. Yad b’yad is Hebrew for “hand in hand,” an apt name for a call to members of all ages and interests to sustain our financial future. Co-chaired by Past Presidents John Nannes and Bob Shapiro, Yad B’Yad will support the Congregation’s exceptional range of programming, including the worship, social action, and educational experiences that make membership meaningful to you. True to the values of our ancestors, the An- nual Fund will also help us maintain an “open tent,” welcoming families regardless of means. With membership revenues and fees supporting only 77 percent of our annual operating costs, Yad B’Yad will help secure our financial future by bridging the gap between membership-based income and ongoing expenses. “When I recently learned that many synagogues across the country are now relying on annual giving to support their needs, it made me think that WHC should look to an annual giving program as well. We are well-positioned to launch a successful Continued on page 2. Amram Opens Season on October 26 with Exposé: The Nazis Next Door P ulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalist Eric Lichtblau will open the Amram Scholar Series on Sunday, October 26 at 10:30 am at Temple with his shocking exposé of how post-war America became a safe haven for Hitler’s men. “Thousands of Nazis — from concentration camp guards to SS officers and high-level leaders in the Third Reich — came to the United States after World War II and easily settled into new lives, with their pasts easily disguised and their war crimes soon forgotten,” he reveals. “Some had help: from the American government. The CIA, the FBI, and the military all put Hitler’s minions to work as spies, intelligence ‘assets’ and leading scien- Amram tists and engineers, whitewashing their histories.” Even now some remain on American soil. Using once-secret government records and interviews, Mr. Lichtblau tells their story for the first time. An investigative reporter in Washington who won the Pulitzer in 2006 for stories on the National Security Agency’s secret wiretapping operations, Mr. Lichtblau has appeared as a frequent guest on CNN, MSBC, PBS, NPR, CSPAN, ABC, and elsewhere. He is the author Continued on page 8. WHC News Yad B’Yad (continued from page 1) Annual Fund, which would allow us to continue the commitment we have to our membership and the community,” said Co-Chair Bob Shapiro. “WHC has so much to offer,” added Co-Chair John Nannes, “and we need to find ways that families can afford and enjoy that experience. The Annual Fund is an opportunity for members to help us do that and, at the same time, continue the programs and services that have made WHC so special.” There are many convenient ways to participate, including giving by check, credit card, stock, or billing your WHC account. To pledge your support, please contact Development Director Miriam Feffer at 202-8956312 or [email protected]. Every gift to Yad B’Yad counts as a generous investment in our continued strength, so please extend your hand in partnership, and be counted! Compounding this particular type of loss is that there is little communal support to mourn and acknowledge the grief that ensues. On Thursday, October 23 at 7:00 pm, WHC will host a community service, conducted by clergy of all denominations, to give a voice to the grief that families endure. We hope that this coming together will create community, promote the sharing of experiences, and provide the support of a caring network as we move forward into a new year. If you or someone you know has experienced this type of loss, we welcome you will join us. Help us prepare for Mitzvah Monday* on November 24! *last year’s Tuesday Trimmings We invite you to experience — here at Washington Hebrew Congregation — the Jewish Shabbat phenomenon that attracts hundreds to Tel Aviv Port each week during the summer. On Friday, November 14, Beit Tefila Israeli of Tel Aviv will bring their unique spiritual and cultural Kabbalat Shabbat to our 6:00 pm service through the generosity of the Abe & Irene Pollin Music Program Initiative. During the summer, nearly 1,000 traditional and secular Israelis gather on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea every Friday evening for Beit Tefila Israeli’s (BTI) unique spiritual and cultural Shabbat experience. On November 14, Rabbi Esteban Gottfried, Beit Tefila Israeli’s founder and director, and three BTI musicians will be joined by Cantors Mikhail Manevich and Susan Bortnick and WHC’s Kol Rinah as they transform our Shabbat service with their uplifting combination of traditional prayers, modern Hebrew poetry and songs, dancing, music, and meditation. We hope you will join us! Volunteer now to bake 4–6 loaves of pumpkin bread or 4–6 dozen cookies. Contact Janet Katz, 301-299-3612 or katzfam3@yahoo. com for more information. After a chance viewing of a documentary in 1982 about hidden children in German-occupied Belgium, however, she realized 6 there were other children who shared her experience. She said, “The film brought validation for those hazy, buried memories. What I half remembered had really happened; I hadn’t simply imagined those terrible years.” The result of this effort is Katz’s memoir, the National Jewish Book Award Finalist Looking for Strangers: The True Story of My Hidden Wartime Childhood. We hope you will join us and members of our Confirmation class for this meaningful service, co-sponsored by WHC, Annunciation Catholic Church, and St. Albans Parish. WHC News Filmmaker to Screen Award-Winning Story of Holocaust Rescue at Temple officials in their effort to carry out their bold rescue plan. That spring, Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus sailed for Europe and into the heart of darkness. 50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus tells, for the first time, the incredible story of an American couple who, against all odds, brought the single largest group of children during the Holocaust out of Nazi Germany and into the United States. Steven Pressman, worked for many years as a newspaper and magazine journalist in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco. 50 Children, nominated for a 2014 Emmy for Outstanding Historical Programming; winner of the Charlotte Jewish Film Festival Audience Award, Best Film; and distributed by Seventh Arts Releasing is his first documentary. RSVP to Marsha Humphries, [email protected] or 202-895-6303. This program is sponsored by the Edlavitch-Tyser Family Relations Forum. On Tuesday, October 28 at 7:00 pm at Temple, Steven Pressman, director, producer, and writer, will screen and discuss his film, 50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus. Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus never intended to become heroes. But in early 1939, as conditions were worsening for Jews living inside Nazi Germany, the Philadelphia couple embarked on a risky and improbable mission: an effort to rescue fifty Jewish children and bring them to safety in the United States. The couple faced imposing obstacles. The United States government — not to mention a vast majority of the American public — was largely indifferent to the plight of Jewish refugees seeking to escape from Adolf Hitler’s increasing persecution. America’s rigid immigration laws also made it nearly impossible to bring refugees, even children, into this country. The Krauses, who were Jewish, also had to face the risks of traveling into Nazi Germany and dealing with the Gestapo and other Nazi Prime Timers Philadelphia Day Trip Fabulous Holiday Boutique & Silent Auction is Less Than a Month Away! Perkins 10 Tributes in this WHC Journal reflect contributions received through September 30. Washington Hebrew Congregation founded the Carrie Simon House (CSH) in 1988 to provide transitional housing, counseling, and mentoring in basic life skills management and parenting skills to young, single, homeless mothers and their children. The home can house, at any given time, up to three mothers and their children. Over the past two decades, Carrie Simon House has helped over 100 homeless mothers take important first steps toward self-sufficiency. Carrie Simon House serves young mothers, ages 18 – 25. As a condition of residency, they agree to stay in school, pursue job training or hold down a job. The women and their children live together in a supportive, cooperative group home with a house manager who provides daily structure and guidance. The residents share household responsibilities, must adhere to strict curfews and follow other house rules. By providing them with a healthy, positive, stable home setting, we try to help them get their lives back on track. A licensed counselor/social worker meets with the residents in weekly group and individual sessions. Coun- seling sessions focus on practical skills, such as budgeting and childhood nutrition, helping the young women plan their next steps, and identifying and treating any issues their children may have as well. In addition, each resident is paired with a volunteer from the WHC Committee who provides informal mentoring, friendship, and support. Religious School Fundraiser Our Religious School students are currently holding a fundraiser for Carrie Simon House. Each child received a blue CSH tzedakah box to fill. If a child you know is filling a CSH tzedakah box, we hope you will help! Your donations to support the CSH program help in many ways. $50 pays for public transportation for one resident to and from work or school for one week; $25 stocks our new puzzle and book corner; $10 buys paper towels, toilet tissue and laundry and/or cleaning supplies. All contributions go directly to CSH — there are no administrative costs! Don’t know a Religious School student? You can still help! This moving work shares the voices of those whose lives were lost or forever changed during the Holocaust. The Reston Chorale, joined by Cantor Mikhail Manevich and Cantor Susan Bortnick, will remember them and share their songs and their stories, their sorrows and their strength with a special performance at Temple. Under the direction of David B. Lang, The Reston Chorale is a mixed-voice ensemble that performs music across the genres. At the invitation of the composer, members of The Chorale will join in the New York premiere of the fully orchestrated version of the cantata, In the Shadow of the Holocaust, at Lincoln Center on November 9, the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht.
