Annual Meeting
WHC’s Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 31 will begin at
7:00 pm and will feature a special Congregational Conversation Keynote from Israel’s Ambassador to the United
States, Ron Dermer. Born and raised in Miami Beach,
Florida, Ambassador Dermer earned a degree in Finance
and Management from the Wharton School of Business at
the University of Pennsylvania and a degree in Philosophy,
Politics and Economics (PPE) from Oxford University. In
2004, the ambassador co-authored with Natan Sharansky
Ambassador Ron Dermer
the best-selling book, The Case for Democracy: The Power
of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror. From 2005-2008, he served as Israel's
Minister of Economic Affairs in the United States, and from 2009-2013, he
served as senior advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

About Carrie Simon House
Carrie Simon House, a nonprofit transitional housing program
in northwest Washington, DC, provides young, homeless
mothers and their children a stable, nurturing group living
environment and the time and support to get their lives on
track. With individualized counseling, mentoring and day-today guidance, Carrie Simon House makes it possible for single
mothers age 18-25 to advance or complete their schooling,
attain steady employment and develop sound lifemanagement and parenting skills.
Since 1988, Carrie Simon House has provided more than 100
vulnerable young mothers with stability, structure, support
and time to pursue a brighter future for themselves and their
children.

WHC members, Elizabeth & Bob Margolis, generously made
possible the 2013-2014 renovations to the Carrie Simon
House. Their donation provided muchneeded renovations including: installing a
new roof, gutters, windows, doors and
insulation; finishing two screened porches
with heat/AC to create bedrooms; and
buying a new washer/dryer. These
renovations make the home more energy
efficient and pleasant for the residents. In
addition, Elizabeth & Bob secured gift-inkind donations for the kitchen renovation
including: new
appliances, vinyl

cabinetry, sink and
laminate countertops. Thanks to these
improvements, many evenings the
residents are now in the kitchen
together preparing healthy meals for
themselves and their children. Of
course, to make a kitchen fully

Nominees for WHC Board of Directors
Ellen R. Berlow
Ellen, her late husband, Ralph F. Berlow, her children, and grandchildren have been members of Washington
Hebrew Congregation for four decades. She has served on many WHC committees including Community
Issues/Social Action, learning retreats with EmptyNesters, adult education courses, and travel to Israel with
Rabbi Joseph Weinberg. She attended the 2007 Union for Reform Judaism biennial conference in San Diego
as a WHC delegate. Ellen is the co-founder of WHC Books, a library discussion group that meets quarterly to
share books and poetry on Jewish themes.
Ellen is a freelance journalist and has written for The Washington Post, The Wall St. Journal, and United
Features Syndicate. She was a columnist on health and aging for The Washington Times from 1993-98. She was communications
director for the Maryland Presidential campaign for Jimmy Carter and served as information director of President Carter's
Advisory Committee for Women. Ellen is currently deputy editor of the Cosmos Club monthly bulletin.
Brian Friedman
Brian has been a member of Washington Hebrew Congregation for several years. Originally from suburban
Detroit, Brian came to D.C. as a founder of a successful tech company. He holds BS, MA, and MBA degrees
from the Kogod School at The American University and is a real estate developer, specializing in boutique
hotel development. Brian also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University’s graduate
commercial real estate program.
Brian is the founder of two investment companies: Friedman Capital, an investment management
company, and Foxhall Partners, a commercial real estate development firm. After graduating from Kogod,
Brian was a senior associate at KPMG in its Audit and Risk Advisory department. He also served as vice president and Chief
Investment Officer at First Management Group, a Maryland-based pension fund, real estate asset management, development, and
private equity advisory firm.
Brian is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, the Urban Land Institute, and the International Council of
Shopping Centers. He is a founding board member of the Adams Morgan Youth Leadership Academy, serves on WHC’s Minds
Matter committee, and volunteers with Iona Senior Services. Brian and his wife, Robin Miller Friedman, have two children,
Lawson and Stella. The family lives with their dog, Bo, in Wesley Heights in Washington, D.C.
Deborah Goldman
Deborah has been a member of Washington Hebrew Congregation for more than 30 years; she attended
religious school, became a Bat Mitzvah, was confirmed, and was married at WHC. Her parents, Marjory and
Fred Goldman, have also been longtime, active members of the Congregation; her father served on the WHC
Board, and her mother taught in the religious school for 18 years. Deborah is the immediate Past President of
WHC Sisterhood.
Deborah graduated with distinction from the Honors Program at the University of Michigan, received a
JD cum laude from Cornell Law School and worked at Arent Fox before “retiring” from law practice when
her oldest son was born. When her children were in preschool, Deborah served as co-chair of the Silent Auction Committee at the
Rabbi Joseph Weinberg Early Childhood Center. Deborah also served on WHC’s Religious School Committee. Before becoming
Sisterhood President, Deborah served as the co-chair of Sisterhood’s Religion, Youth, and Education Committee and co-chaired
Sisterhood’s Women’s Seder.
In the wider community, she also served as the Whitman Cluster Coordinator for two terms, and currently serves as Pyle
Cluster Representative, and on the Merrimack Park Pool Board. Deborah is married to Howard Levine and has two sons, Jared
(15) and Joshua (12).
Jessica Isen
Jessica is a lifelong member of Washington Hebrew Congregation. She is chair of the Youth Committee
and a past co-chair of Mitzvah Day. Jessica has celebrated all of her significant life cycle events with the
Congregation: Bat Mitzvah, Confirmation, and her marriage to Michael Isen, who is also a lifelong member of
Washington Hebrew.
Jessica attended the University of Maryland and is a health coach in Rockville, Maryland with BodyTech,
Inc. She also serves on the Board of Governors at Woodmont Country Club. Jessica and Michael are the
parents of Sam and Molly, who attend the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School.

Jeremy London
Jeremy has been a member of Washington Hebrew Congregation for 30 years. He attended WHC Religious
School and has celebrated all major life events with WHC. His parents, Dr. Gary and the late Susan London,
have also been longtime and active members of the Congregation.
Jeremy graduated from the University of Michigan and received a JD from the George Washington
University Law School with highest honors. He began his legal career at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate,
Meagher & Flom LLP where he has been a partner since 2006, specializing in mergers and acquisitions and
corporate finance transactions. He has been named a leading M&A attorney in Washington by Chambers USA
each year since 2008. Jeremy is involved in numerous pro bono activities at Skadden, including having represented survivors
of the Holocaust in ghetto reparations programs. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Greater
Washington, an organization dedicated to youth financial literacy programs in the D.C. community.
Jeremy and his wife, Robin, have three children, Samantha, Casey, and Cooper, who all attended the Rabbi Joseph Weinberg
Early Childhood Center.
Kimberly Wachen
Kimberly has been a member of Washington Hebrew Congregation for more than 35 years. She attended
WHC Religious School as a child, became a Bat Mitzvah and was confirmed at WHC, was married by
WHC clergy, and has celebrated all major life cycle events with the Temple. Her parents, Rozelle and Barry
Grossman, have also been longtime members of the Congregation.
Kimberly graduated from Duke University with majors in history and accounting and became a Certified
Public Accountant. She received a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she was elected
president of her class. Kimberly is a partner in the Washington office of Arent Fox, where she has practiced
real estate and corporate law for 23 years. Kimberly is recognized as one of the top real estate lawyers in the country by Chambers
USA, Legal 500, Super Lawyers Magazine, and other leading industry publications. Kimberly and her husband, David, have two
children, Allison and Robert, who attended the Rabbi Joseph Weinberg Early Childhood Center and now attend Religious School
at the Julia Bindeman Suburban Center.
Lewis Wiener
Lew has been a member of Washington Hebrew Congregation for more than 25 years. He co-chaired the
Rabbinic Search Committee that resulted in the hiring of Rabbi Skloot, is the co-chair of the Board’s ECC
Committee and co-chaired the 2014 Board Retreat.
A partner with the international law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, Lew heads the firm’s financial
services litigation group and serves as its Washington, D.C. office’s pro bono partner. Prior to joining
Sutherland in 2000, Lew was a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. He is a 1984 graduate of
the State University of New York at Albany and received his law degree in 1987 from The American University,
Washington College of Law.
Lew is a member of the Board of Trustees/Board of Directors of the State University of New York at Albany and the University
at Albany Foundation. Lew is also co-chair and a longtime member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Lawyers
Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Norwood School, and since 2000, has
served as a court-appointed member of the United States Court of Claims Advisory Board. Lew and his wife, Alisa, have three
children, Zachary (16), Jillian (14), and Lindsay (12).
Dan Werner
Dan, a member of the Congregation for 25 years, is vice chair of the Amram Scholar Series, for which
he often serves as moderator. He has also participated as a discussion leader in this year’s Congregational
Conversations focused on Ari Shavit’s book My Promised Land and has organized numerous political-debate
style programs for the Congregation during election years. A former member of the Religious School
Committee, Dan volunteered as a Mitzvah Day team leader for more than 15 years.
Dan is an executive producer at Newshour Productions, LLC, where he created and produces the.News, a
weekly online youth news program that is distributed to schools. He also originated and serves as executive
producer of By the People, a project of public television and Stanford University’s Center for Deliberative Democracy that generates
civic engagement activities and television programs on controversial public issues in the United States and abroad.
Dan graduated with honors in political science from New York University before earning both law and journalism degrees from
Columbia University. In 1974, working as Fred Friendly’s teaching assistant at the Columbia University School of Journalism, he
assisted in the publication of the book, The Good Guys, the Bad Guys and the First Amendment. Dan’s wife, Leslie Maitland, served
as an officer of the Congregation and chairs the Amram Scholar Series. They have two children, Zachary and Ariel.

Nick Kotz, Pulitzer Prize-winning
journalist, author, historian, and
WHC member, will discuss his latest
book, The Harness Makers Dream:
Nathan Kallison and the Rise of South
Texas, at the Prime Timers monthly
luncheon at Temple on Monday, May
18 at 12:30 pm.
The Harness Maker’s Dream is a
story written “with well-researched
care and moving, superbly crafted
prose. The result is a marvelous history
lesson told with the lilt of a novel.”
(Jim Lehrer, PBS New Hour). Mr.
Kotz’s grandfather, Ukrainian immigrant Nathan Kallison, came to
the United States at the age of 17 to
escape anti-Semitic law and pursue a
better life. Faced with the challenges of
learning English and earning wages as
a harness maker in Chicago, Kallison
struggled. After moving to San Antonio, he found success in ranching and
the farm and ranch supply business.

years, the generosity
of Washington Hebrew Congregation
members has made
it possible for Abram
Simon Elementary
School students to
attend Camp Moss
Hollow, an overnight
camp in Virginia
at the edge of the
Shenandoah Mountains for children-atrisk. Many of these
children have never
left the District; most have never been
away from home; and for some, home
is a shelter. As many of our congregants
know from personal experience, camp
offers children so much more than a
summer activity — it is an extraordinary experience filled with possibility.
Providing the children with an opportunity to go to Camp Moss Hollow
depends on two things: the hard work
of a small group of devoted Abram
Simon Elementary School volunteers
who manage the paper work, coordinate free physicals, and arrange transportation for the children…and you.
The cost for a child to attend Camp
Moss Hollow is $350. Our goal is to
enable at least 50 children to experience this life-enhancing and possibly
life-changing summer program. Your
contribution to the Abram Simon Elementary School Camp Fund — of any
amount — is most welcome.
