In the midst of the presidential primaries, one word on
everyone’s lips, no matter what their political affiliation, is
“leadership.” We are collectively searching out the candidate
who can provide gifted leadership. In the Church and in our
parishes we need servant leadership. And that doesn’t just
mean “leadership” that comes with a collar. We need leaders
in our parishes – young and old, male and female – who can guide and serve the
community. Look around you today for potential leaders. And think what you can
do to call them forward.

FROM THE PASTOR
THE WAY OF THE CROSS
From the introduction to the Mass for Passion [Palm] Sunday:
Since the beginning of Lent until now, we have prepared our hearts by penance and charitable works.
Today we gather together to herald with the whole Church the beginning of the celebration of our Lord’s
Paschal Mystery, that is to say, of his Passion and Resurrection. For it was to accomplish this mystery
that he entered his own city of Jerusalem. Therefore, with all faith and devotion, let us commemorate the
Lord’s entry into the city for our salvation, following in his footsteps, so that, being made by his grace
partakers of the Cross, we may have a share also in his Resurrection and in his life.
To follow Jesus is a matter of life and death, for all eternity. The God who created us for life and
love urgently desires that we should not be lost in our own sinful failures and futilities. To save us,
he revealed his divine love in human terms by giving us the Person of Jesus—who, in his
humanity, gave his life in obedience and love, even to the point of death on a cross. Jesus’
resurrection to a glorified body reveals the perfection of his humanity in eternal life.
Jesus summons you to follow him on the way of the cross, the way of death and resurrection. He
calls you to persevere in faith and love, no matter the grief or fear that afflict you. He invites you
to receive the joys and hopes of this world not as your own achievements or possessions, but as his
pledge of eternal life.
The observances of this Holy Week elaborate these mysteries:
 Today, Palm Sunday, we commemorate the Lord’s resolution to enter the city where he will be
arrested, tortured, and crucified. To follow Jesus requires our firm intention!
 Tuesday, we host our Lenten Penance Service at 7:00 p.m. As a community, we repent of our
past failures and beg God’s mercy, a new opportunity to follow Jesus. Bishop William Winter
and several priests will be available also for individual confession and absolution.
 Thursday we celebrate the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:00 p.m. The Mass commemorates
Jesus’ institution of the sacraments of the Eucharist and Holy Orders. Through the sacrament
of the Eucharist, Jesus renews his self-gift to us, and anew invites us to offer ourselves
alongside him in his eternal, divine love.
 Friday at 2:00 p.m. marks the Liturgy of the Passion and Death of the Lord. The distinctively
stark liturgy conveys the special solemnity and awe of Jesus’ victory over sin.
 Saturday at 8:30 p.m. (that is, after sunset) we begin the Easter Vigil—the most joyful
celebration of the bodily resurrection of the Lord, a revelation of the glory he intends for all
those who follow him in love. Thus the introduction to the Easter Vigil:
On this most sacred night in which our Lord Jesus Christ passed over from death to life, the Church
calls upon her sons and daughters, scattered throughout the world, to come together to watch and pray. If
we keep this memorial of the Lord’s paschal solemnity in this way, listening to his word and celebrating
his mysteries, then we shall have the sure hope of sharing his triumph over death and living with him in
God.

PRAYING FOR LIFE
At least 8 of our
parishioners
made it
downtown to
pray
‘against abortion
and for life’ on
our SEAS 40
Days for Life
Day, March 10,
2016. It was
rainy, chilly …
and peacefully prayerful! Hopefully many of you were
praying with us from your homes. The 40 Days for
Life - Lent 2016 Prayer Campaign continues until
March 20th - but the need for prayer for this issue,
unfortunately, will last much longer! Please continue
to keep the travesty of abortion, and all of the many
other issues that are contrary to dignity of life, in your
prayers!

SEAS
EVANGELIZES
HEARTS SPEAK TO HEARTS
Easter is coming!
Soon it will be Easter Sunday, 2016, and we'll have a church FULL of people whom we wish were with us
EVERY Sunday! Let's pray for those who will come to join us ... and for those who are CONSIDERING coming
to join us. And, hey, while we're at it, let's move to the CENTER of 'our' pew, and wear a smile, to provide a
welcoming atmosphere!
A Prayer for Return
Gracious God,
You are full of compassion
and mercy for your people.
Give us a heart of welcome
for those who feel alienated
and cut off from Your love. Amen.
Jesus, loving Shepherd,
You search out and gather those who are lost
and carry them home.
Give us the courage and faith
to reach out and invite home Catholics
who have lost touch with
Christ and the Christian community. Amen.
Holy Spirit, source of unity,
You drive out all fear and prejudice
through the light of your presence.
Give us an attentive and gracious spirit
that will encourage returning Catholics
to rejoin the worshiping community and
to grow in their faith. Amen.

On the cover: Pietà by Frank DeAndrea
Location: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, St. Maximilian Kolbe Room
Frank DeAndrea was born and raised in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He
served in the US Navy during World War II and graduated from the Art Institute of
Pittsburgh before studying painting and design at Carnegie Tech. He died in 2006, survived
by six sons, one of whom is St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parishioner Mark DeAndrea.
All depictions of the Pietà show the dead body of the Lord Jesus in the arms of
his mother. Usually, the figures are set against what the artist imagines to be
the historical Jerusalem, or in a landscape contemporary to the artist. Frank
DeAndrea’s version detaches this image from any earthly or historical setting
and instead fashions a context of nebulous lines and orbs, evocative of outer
space. The artist seems to suggest the cosmic importance of the image—that
the death of the Lord Jesus and the grief of his mother condition all time and
space, and perhaps transcend even these.
