ETSC … How the journey unfolded
The Enterprise & Technology Solutions Centre (ETSC) in Bangalore was
launched in May 2012. The Center was formally inaugurated by Unilever CEO,
Mr. Paul Polman in November 2012.
• Our unique hub employs >2100 Unilever and partner employees and is the first
Unilever centre to provide services for the entire globe from a single location.
• ETSC is a global hub with state-of-the-art technology and facilities.
• ETSC offers Unilever faster, better quality and more cost-effective support. It
draws on HUL’s rich heritage and strengths and inspires our people to drive
business growth.
• As well as being a cost-competitive model, Unilever can use the centre to pilot
innovations
Speed and scale:
The ETSC was built in four months and within 1.5 years, our employee base
doubled to 850, with Finance Services and Application Support teams being set
up from scratch.

AGILE WORKPLACE PRINCIPLES
Very few assigned desks – desk sharing allows for more meeting space.
Designed around activities – not individuals
Individual and team storage
Space allocated on need, not hierarchy.
Agile workplace zones
ETSC is an Agile Workplace designed with three specific zone types: Focus,
Connect, and Vitality.
Each of the zones serves a specific purpose.
17
Zones
First, the Focus zone.
Focus zones contain space for individual working and largely consist of
workstations that can be used flexibly by residents.
Connect zones are specifically designed for collaboration with colleagues—
either those physically present in the facility or those that are far away.
Connect zones contain both formal and informal conference spaces, as well as
huddle areas and VC & telepresence facilities.
Lastly, Vitality zones contain space for revitalization, health, and meeting
personal needs.
Such spaces might include Plaza Areas, Cafeteria, Ground floor kiosks,
amenities (such as banking, U-Shop etc.).

ARE THERE TRADE-OFFS?
• Yes…
• Less “personal space” in the office
• Less “face to face” time with colleagues
• Potentially harder to manage boundaries around personal
time
• But…the trade-offs can be worth it
