THE FIRST 50 YEARS
Jerry Leen loved beautiful things and elegant buildings. Owner of the
acclaimed Dennis and Leen antiques store in Los Angeles, he owned
homes from San Francisco to Los Angeles—each of which was featured in
Architectural Digest. But his heart belonged to Santa Barbara. A good pal of
Ganna Walska, the late opera star and owner of Lotusland, he enjoyed walks
on the beach and the downtown Farmers Market.
Toward the end of his life, he made arrangements to bequeath $558,000
to the Santa Barbara Foundation, asking only that his gift be used where the
need is greatest.

Charlotte Doyle Davis loved books and children. She
combined these twin interests with an outgoing nature,
kindness and a fine sense of humor, and became the head of
the Santa Barbara County Education Office Student Library,
as it was known at the time. In 1954, Charlotte established Breakfast with the Authors,
which brought together local illustrators and authors of children’s books with teachers,
librarians and administrative staff. The event continues more than 50 years later. Charlotte
left $600,000 for a traveling librarian for three small school districts in northern Santa
Barbara County.

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together
is success.
Throughout its 78-year history, the Santa Barbara Foundation has certainly understood
this concept. With the help of individual donors, local foundations, area nonprofits and
local governments, we have nurtured hundreds of successful projects. Most recently, a
collaborative program with County Schools called Care & Share ensures that children learn
the value of volunteerism and philanthropy early in their lives. A long-standing relationship
with The James Irvine Foundation has allowed us to promote the arts throughout the
County. And a new partnership with The Orfalea Fund will result in more funding for
local nonprofits.
In addition, there is our Associates Program that now numbers more than 1,000 people
who support our work throughout the community; our Man and Woman of the Year event,
co-sponsored with KEYT Television; and the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara that makes
significant grants to agencies that work with children and families. None of these programs
and projects would be possible without partnerships.
In the pages that follow you will learn even more about the teamwork that exists
throughout our County in which resources are leveraged, services are enhanced and
economies of scale are realized. This is critically important work and we hope you are
inspired by it.

Care & Share ensures that
children learn the value of
volunteerism and philanthropy
early in their lives.
Working in partnership with the County Education Office,
the Foundation offers grants to teachers through the Care &
Share program. Under this program, elementary and secondary
teachers are awarded up to $1,000 to create projects that help
their students develop an understanding of philanthropy and
community service.

Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara
The Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara awarded grants totaling
$200,000 to four local nonprofit organizations. The funds were
used to provide young people with counseling, mentoring,
bilingual after-school programs, and in some cases, shelter. One
of the Fund’s grantees, Planned Parenthood’s Adelante Amigas
program, offers counseling, mentoring, tutoring, and peer
outreach for girls.

ike is 13 years old and in the seventh grade. He began drinking
at age 10. His mother was a drug addict; his dad lived at home
and, although rarely there, abused both mother and son. After
fifth grade, the boy stopped attending school on a regular basis. Mike and
his mother were referred to Fighting Back Santa Maria’s Parent Project by
a truancy program. Since completing the ten-week Parenting and Teen
course, things have been improving. Mike is going to school more often and
is asking for help. He has asked Big Brothers/Big Sisters for a mentor and for
counseling. He has not violated probation and has received positive feedback
from his teachers. Mike’s mother is now in recovery.
Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley was formed in 2003 as a result of Superior
Court Judge Barbara Beck’s concern about rising drug use and delinquent
behavior. With a staff of three and the help of cash donations and grants, the
organization’s Parent Project offers a variety of prevention and educational
services to help parents and adolescents who are at risk for substance abuse
and other injurious behavior. Eighty participating parents are experiencing
improvement in their parenting skills and their children’s behavior.

Culture & Recreation
The arts serve a most important function in society, especially for children
who benefit by learning that there are many different ways to gather and
process information. They do not have to be restricted to theatres and
galleries. In Santa Barbara County, the arts flourish in youth centers,
shopping malls and even probation camps.
Foundation grants in the area of culture and recreation help young and old
to have a variety of cultural experiences, and enjoy open spaces, recreation
programs, museums and community celebrations.

Bottoms to become a veterinarian. With the help of Santa Barbara
Foundation student loans, he reached his goal in 2004. After a year of
practicing his extensive equine knowledge, he volunteered for a marine turtle
research effort in the Monterey Bay. His vessel came upon a juvenile humpback whale
hopelessly entangled in fishing gear. In spite of six hours of effort on the part of the
researchers, the whale drowned. Benjamin was devastated. He realized that his life’s
work was to help the marine mammals who, despite their immense size, are quite
vulnerable. Last year he filmed southern humpback whales off Tonga and is now
creating a documentary about whale conservation.

Charles Jarvis had a passion for life and vocal chords that could charm
a client or penetrate live sports radio broadcasts. A former Foundation
trustee, Charles Jarvis was a respected attorney, a passionate supporter of
UCSB basketball teams, and a talented woodworker.
Charles attended Stanford University on a Hollowell Scholarship from the
United States Navy. He graduated from UC Berkley’s Boalt Hall School of Law
in 1958 and moved his family to Santa Barbara where he became known and
respected for the thoroughness and integrity of his work.
Charles generously shared his expertise with the Foundation. He was a
trustee in the 1980s and served on the Finance Committee from 1991-96.
COURTESY KORNTHEUER FAMILY
Otto Korntheuer was born in Byram, Connecticut, in 1914. In his 20s and
30s he worked as a recording engineer in New York City. He acquired an
insurance brokerage in Port Chester, N.Y., which he operated until his
retirement and move to Santa Barbara.
Soon after his arrival in Santa Barbara in 1983, Otto made good use of
his early work in radio by volunteering three days a week for Recording for
the Blind and Dyslexic (RFBD). He understood the problems of the blind
very well as his wife, Arleeta, had severely impaired vision. He contributed
time and experience at RFBD for 15 years and was honored as Volunteer of
the Year in 2005.
Otto remembered the Santa Barbara Foundation in his estate plans.

Communities Advancing
the Arts
Funding received from The James Irvine
Foundation allowed the Foundation to test a
different type of grantmaking. A total of $155,000
in mini-grants and venue subsidy grants were
awarded to area arts organizations. A campaign is
underway to encourage new, sustainable funding
sources for the arts by building awareness
throughout the County.
The Santa Barbara Trust for Historic
Preservation helps preserve and restore
important parts of Santa Barbara’s
history: the Presidio, Casa de la Guerra,
and Santa Ines Mission Mills. In addition
to archaeological excavations, historical
reconstructions, museum installations and
ongoing education programs, the Trust
presents free family craft events in the
courtyard of Casa de la Guerra. These are
centered around Mexican holidays such
as Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos.
During the latter, whimsical skulls and
skeletons abound, like the skeletal family
(left), created by Santa Barbara artist
Celina Amaya.

Do you want to be a partner in philanthropy? We do.
WE MAKE IT EASY. CALL US!
Santa Barbara Foundation is:
YOUR community foundation. We have grown
steadily over the past 78 years, thanks to thousands of
local donors who have partnered with the nonprofit
community to improve life for everyone in Santa
Barbara County.
Here are a few ways you can get involved.
Join the Foundation Family.
For $35 or more, become a member of the Santa
Barbara Foundation Associates. Your gift helps
support the endowment fund—a permanent fund
that allows the Foundation to make grants today and
plan for tomorrow. As an Associate, you’ll receive
our quarterly newsletter, the annual report, and
invitations to special events in one of Santa Barbara’s
oldest adobes. Place your gift in the enclosed
envelope and mail it today!
We make it easy to be
a philanthropist.
We are flexible and knowledgeable about community
needs. You make a lasting difference in your
community and enjoy maximum tax benefits…and we
take care of all the paperwork!
How do you wish to be remembered?
Include the Foundation in your estate plan. You can
leave real estate, stock, or cash and may designate the
funds to be used for general or specific purposes.
Do you have an interest in a specific area but
are not sure where to give your money?
Establish a Field of Interest Fund and the Foundation
will help you distribute the funds. We have five
funding cycles in the areas of education, health,
human services, culture and recreation, and
community enhancement. Through your fund, you
can help augment our grantmaking.
Want to be involved in making grants?
Create a Donor Advised Fund in your name and
establish a lasting legacy of support for your favorite
causes. This type of fund simplifies charitable giving,
allowing you to make a gift, take an immediate tax
deduction, choose when and where to donate to your
favorite organization—and leave all the details to us.
Interested in supporting local students?
Establish a scholarship in your area of interest or
designate your gift for our student loan program.
We help more than 1,000 students attend college
every year.
For more information on how to become involved
with the work of the Foundation, please contact
Tanya Gonzales, Vice President of Development,

Joyce Fahlman was a talented musician, a caring teacher, a loving parent,
and a philanthropist. She began playing the violin at age 10 and later toured
with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (above) in 1946, playing with some of the
best jazz instrumentalists of the time. She continued to play violin and viola
in local symphony orchestras and taught music in the LA school system for
many years.
In 1997, Joyce created the Joyce H. Fahlman Music Scholarships, donating
$20,000 a year to support and nurture talented young musicians. She took
a personal interest in the students and they responded in kind and filled
her mailbox with letters and cards. She will be remembered by all for her
generosity, her warm smile, and love of music.
Edica Mary Uccello was a native Santa Barbaran who lived most of her life
quietly on De la Vina Street. Her father, a strict and thrifty Italian immigrant,
would not hear of her attending UCSB after her graduation from Santa
Barbara High School. Undeterred, Edica worked part-time, took classes, and
eventually graduated with a BA in Economics from UCSB. She lived modestly
and never left town.
Her friend, Grace, persuaded her to visit Las Vegas. The trip was such
a success that Edica later agreed to go to Italy—an adventure that became
the highlight of her life. After retirement from the County she became good
friends with her stock broker. The pair made careful investments, which
gradually grew into a tidy sum allowing Edica to leave $270,000 to help young
people to receive an education.

Realize your passion for philanthropy with us…
We build permanent community capital.
We promote effective giving.
Above: A $27,240 grant to the Isla Vista Children’s Center
provides for scholarships for the children of low-income families
to benefit from being with caring adults who engage them and
stimulate them with age-appropriate activities.
Above: A Foundation grant of $26,768 to the South Coast
Community Aquatic Center has meant that 500 third-grade
students in the Goleta Union School District are learning to swim.
Students enjoy some after class fun with their instructor, Josh Usher.
Below: The Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens
is a 100-year-old farm. It feeds approximately 500 families and
offers guided and self-guided tours, outreach to schools, and
lectures and festivals. These freshly-harvested carrots are on their
way to the farm’s produce stand.
