2008 - Enfield Loaves and Fishes
How Can You Help? Enfield Loaves and Fishes is solely dependent upon donations and volunteer help from individuals, churches, organizations, corporations and local businesses in North Central Connecticut throughout the year. The soup kitchen does not receive monetary support from local, state or federal governments. There is a constant need for volunteers and donations since “hunger has no season.” Monetary donations support food purchases, rent, insurance, supplies, equipment purchases, and maintenance. Volunteers are needed to help with the transportation of food and supplies, stocking, food preparation, serving, and clean-up. St. Andrew’s Church Hargrave Hall Annex Enfield Loaves and Fishes Thank you Volunteers, Contributors, and Enfield HUNGER HAS NO SEASON Enfield Loaves and Fishes, Inc. P.O. Box 544 F Enfield, CT 06083-0544 www.enfieldloavesandfishes.com Our goal at Enfield Loaves and Fishes is to serve “fresh foods” to improve the health of each Guest. This is extremely important, since many of our Guests have only one meal a day. Offering hot, well balanced nutritious meals, Enfield Loaves and Fishes was honored to serve 52,589 meals, about 5,000 more than last year. This includes 18,505 meals, or 35%, served to children. Additionally, 27,393 snacks were prepared for Educational Resources for Children (ERfC) in after school programs at (5) schools housed at (3) locations, an increase of 3,430 more than last year. Food to prepare 6,846 meals at home was also provided to assist families in emergency situations. These statistics seem contradictory to the American Dream – in a nation fondly known as the “Land of Plenty.” 2008 proved extremely sobering for many Americans, with a globally weakening market. Many are losing savings, homes, retirement, and need the Soup Kitchen to survive. Some jobs became part-time without insurance benefits, or eliminated altogether due to businesses collapsing. Our Guests can use the Soup Kitchen to save for rent, heat, lights, medicine, and clothing for their children. Guests are always welcome to warm meals seven days a week, and find resources regarding job opportunities, social services, rents, household appliances, furnishings, utilities and medical assistance. With the number of meals increasing, we kindly thank friends, schools, churches, organizations and businesses that generously partner with the Soup Kitchen to ensure “no one goes hungry.” The Enfield Women’s Club GFWC/CT played a major role in helping Enfield Loaves and Fishes acquire a new Sprinter van. Now we can transport large quantities of foodstuffs necessary to continue feeding the hungry poor. Christmas for young people of all ages was celebrated on 12/22/08. Students and youth groups from as far away as Somers and Granby added decorations and lights. Some assisted adults with food preparation, then participated as waiters and waitresses. Two volunteers led Christmas songs, adding instrumental accompaniment. Following dinner, other student Elves helped Santa distribute gifts to over 300 Guests. A few families were adopted by the community to receive Christmas gifts. The support of volunteers and the community at large is tremendous. Our volunteers graciously donate their time, talent, and love—key ingredients in each colorful, nutritious and delicious serving of food. Without their kindness and generosity, this valuable mission to end hunger could not be sustained. Guests frequently smile, offer genuine thanks, and often help us without being asked. On behalf of the Board of Directors and all our Guests, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who share in this worthwhile effort. Know that your kindness is much appreciated. May your generosity be multiplied many fold and returned to you. Priscilla Brayson, Director Enfield Loaves and Fishes DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS Mission Statement Loaves and Fishes is committed to providing meals and fellowship to the poor, hungry, and disenfranchised within our community. GRATEFUL SMILES After School Program 2 Annual 0 Report 0 of Caring 8 Benny’s Story Benny has been coming to Enfield Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen for more than two years. He says he comes to the Soup Kitchen for the good company, especially Priscilla and Murray, and all the good food. “They are good to you and everyone, and the food there is great. I always try to volunteer and I get along good with everybody. I love to be with my friends here. If it weren’t for the Soup Kitchen, I would be out in the streets and hungry as hell. I come for my health and their help. At about age forty, I have early onset of Multiple Sclerosis (M/S). When M/S struck, I had to give up my beverage truck driving job. I became homeless and you helped me get into the Open Hearth Shelter in Hartford. I walk a little funny and I shake a lot. I have fallen many times, but I am a survivor. You guys took care of me before I was sick. You even helped me get my first wheelchair. Since my apartment was on the second floor, I had to drop my wheelchair down two flights of stairs to get to the Soup Kitchen. This was my only way to get it down to the first floor. After the meal, I had to drag myself and the wheelchair back up the stairs, one step at a time, taking up to an hour and a half to make it back into the apartment. My friends tried to make a ramp, but I have fallen several times from going down the ramp too fast. Sometimes the steepness of the ramp was the problem, and other times I couldn’t grab anything to turn or slow myself down. Most days I come to the Soup Kitchen alone. I go to all the Holiday Celebration Dinners each year. They give so much: great food, clothes, sheets, pillows, flowers, Christmas gifts, door prizes, beverages, and best of all their love and time. One day I went to Loaves and Fishes and one of my two main wheels fell off. “She, Priscilla, didn’t have any tools and asked the guests to help me. There was no response. Then she stated, “We are all family here, and this is your brother. Either you fix his wheelchair, or you can carry Bennie home on your back!” Many guests responded by getting tools and supplies. They repaired it and I made it home safely. Priscilla then started to work on getting me down to the first floor. She contacted Social Services and showed them my desperate situation. She made my worker aware of the conditions and even had him check out my apartment. She was able to make arrangements so that I could move down to the first floor. Priscilla even went a step further and was able to get me an electric wheelchair. “I got my freedom back! Now I can go to the grocery store or anywhere. They even let me recharge my wheels at the Soup Kitchen. The great folks, Priscilla and Murray, along with Attorney Debra Curry, helped me to apply for housing from Enfield. My first application was rejected. Debra started the appeals process and petitioned for a hearing to review my application. She made sure all necessary documents were provided. The wait was long and I was worried. Then, the best of news: I was accepted! I will be moving to Enfield Terrace. January 14th will be my first day there. It will be a real day of celebration!” Tribute to June Thibodeau Since preschool, almost everyone is familiar with the phrase “SHOW and TELL.” We at the Enfield Loaves and Fishes want to SHOW our appreciation and TELL you about our veteran volunteer of 25 years, June Thibodeau. While grocery shopping 25 years ago, June was greeted by Victor Scussel, who was asking for donations for the Soup Kitchen, of which his wife Gloria was the Director. June expressed interest in volunteering there and began shortly thereafter. Following retirement from Mt. Sinai Hospital as a pediatric nurse, June focused on supporting volunteer programs that helped those in need. Once on board at the soup kitchen, she extended her volunteering to the SPLASH swim program at JFK, which assisted physically challenged adults in water therapy. For years, June has volunteered on Monday, Wednesday, and occasionally Fridays. Presently serving every Tuesday, June exclaimed, “I plan to continue at the Enfield Loaves and Fishes. Age has no bearing…if you can get up, you go! I am very lucky I can be of service. I would recommend volunteering to everyone, especially our young people.” Although June will celebrate her 80th birthday this year, volunteering at the Enfield Loaves and Fishes and the SPLASH program does not affect her active lifestyle of weekly swimming and walking. Her two sons and two grandchildren are thrilled and inspired by her spirit. We are deeply appreciative of her commitment and dedication and we look forward to the coming years of her beautiful smile, loving compassion, and service to those in need! Who are we? In addition, another 27,393 snacks were prepared for children in ERfC (Educational Resources for Children) after school programs encompassing five schools.
