Letter from the Editor
Dear Graduating Class of 2015,
I know a simple “Congratulations” will
not suffice for the amount of hardwork and
dedication this grade has provided year after year
to H. Frank Carey High School. Whether it was in
academics or extracurricular activities, the Class
of 2015 has gone above and beyond, standing out
to all and leaving our mark on Carey. Over the
years, this grade has learned and grown together,
becoming leaders that Carey High School will
truly miss. We all entered this building with the
same goals: to survive high school and to try to
become better as a result from it. Now we are
going our separate ways; many are going off to
college, many are decided about their majors
and future careers, but a great portion of us don’t
know yet. If you are one of the many that don’t
know what you want to do for a living, know
you are not alone and that everything will work
out in time. It has taken me much time to realize
that we are only teenagers and it’s great to have
a plan, but that only goes so far. We need to
remember to live so that we are able to make our
own mistakes and learn from those mistakes.
We are a talented grade, one that has achieved
so much already and will continue to make
positive impacts on the world. Good luck on
pursuing your dreams and congratulations to us,
the H. Frank Carey High School Class of 2015!
many opportunities for you to take advantage of
and you shouldn’t pass those up. Take APs, but
don’t overwhelm yourself. Go to teachers for
help and make the time to go to review classes.
Join clubs and try out for sport teams. It truly is
never too late to become involved at Carey. Every
grade has a class board that, and I know from
personal experience, is always open to additional
help. Join clubs that sound somewhat intriguing
to you; worst comes to worst, you move on from
that club and experiment with a different one.
There really is a club for everyone at Carey, and
in many cases, several clubs. If you look hard
enough, you will be able to find a productive
and meaningful way to spend your time at this
school, outside of the classroom. Also, go to your
guidance counselors, they are here for you and
want to help. Finally, become your own leaders.
Make your own changes to the world. Know that
one person truly can make a difference and good
luck; it’s now time to make Carey your own.
Dear students and faculty of H. Frank Carey
High School that we leave behind,
Carey has allowed me to truly grow as
a person every single year since seventh grade.
When I entered this school, I had no idea of the
extent to which H. Frank Carey High School
would impact me. To the faculty, thank you so
much for all you have done over the years. Not
only have you engaged your students and taught
them the curriculum, but also taught life lessons
that we will cherish and remember forever. I
would especially like to thank Mrs. Bergbom for
being the heart and soul of H. Frank Carey High
School. You have always been there for the
students of Carey and, trust me, we notice and
appreciate all you do. To the underclassmen, do
not waste your time at this school. I can honestly
say that it goes by too quickly and before you Sincerely,
know it, you are a few short weeks away from Deanna Brusca
graduation. H. Frank Carey High School has
Carey Announces Class of 2015 Valedictorian and Salutatorian
By Dr. Schnepf
H. Frank Carey School is pleased to
announce Kacie Candela as Valedictorian and
Maria Gargiulo as Salutatorian for the Class of 2015.
Kacie Candela, is an outstanding
student, leader, and person who possesses a keen
intellect, indomitable spirit and unwavering
smile. Faculty and students alike recognize
Kacie’s empathetic, nurturing demeanor that
shines through in every class, club, and activity
in which she is involved. Kacie has showcased
her leadership abilities as Vice President of
Model UN, where she has earned several “Best
Delegate” and “Outstanding Delegate” Awards,
and as Executive Director of Sewanhaka’s
District Model UN. In addition, Kacie is Drum
Major of the Marching Band, Treasurer of Stage
Crew, and Secretary of Senior Band. Kacie’s
dedication has earned her many honors, such as:
National and Music Honor Societies where she
serves as Treasurer for both; as well as inductions
into the Math, Science, and Foreign Language
Honor Societies. This bright young lady was also
recently named a National Merit Semi-Finalist!
This young dynamo has also contributed
literary pieces to Poseidon, is in the Pit
Orchestra for the past 3 musicals, runs track in
both the winter and spring, and has helped to
coordinate Model UN fundraisers for several
Non-Governmental Organizations. Outside of
H. Frank Carey HS, Kacie has single-handedly
spearheaded and started up a Model UN
Club for our elementary school students, is a
classically trained pianist, and has volunteered
at the Long Island Marathon. This remarkable
young lady even manages to work part-time
as a tutor, babysitter, and camp counselor.

During her time at H. Frank Carey
High School, Maria Gargiulo has also done
much more than excel academically. These
achievements have been recognized by
her membership in the National, Science,
Foreign Language and Mu Alpha Theta Honor
Societies. Her academic prowess has been
mirrored by her accomplishment on the ACT
achieving a near perfect super score of 35.
Currently, she can be found balancing
her scholastic responsibilities with her role as
President of Model UN, SIDMUN Secretary
General, Swim Captain, National Honor Society
Secretary and her role as a student representative
of the Student Government and as a member
of the Class of 2015. In conjunction with our
Kacie, she has been integral in the writing
of curriculum and implementation of the
elementary school Model UN club. In addition,
Maria balances her time as a swim instructor at
the Long Island Swim School and as a volunteer.

Childhood Is...
By Mrs. Bergbom’s Creative Writing Class 2015
Childhood is the scrapes on your knees and immediately getting back up again to learn how to ride your bicycle.
Childhood is a sunny day with no clouds in the sky and dinner time isn’t for hours.
Childhood is sticking a straw up your nose and pretending you’re a walrus.
Childhood is having no worries and the freedom to use your imagination.
Childhood is like a story that has just begun, waiting to be finished.
It is something we value as being a kid right before adulthood.
Childhood is the best moment that we remember as a child.
Childhood is a full day of sunshine and a long night of sleep.
Childhood is a chance to be yourself and get away with it.
Childhood is full of imagination and wonders.
Childhood is innocence with no secrets kept.
Childhood is not having a care in the world.
Childhood is like one big crazy adventure.
Childhood is playing tag with friends.
Childhood is the nucleus of an atom.
Childhood is a limited freedom.
Childhood is laughter.
Childhood is lost fun.
Childhood is easy.
