We are now on our second Corvette, a 2001 customized with a louvered hood and wing as well as upgrades to the wheels, tires and brakes. We have also modified the engine, including AFR Heads, Headers, LS1 Ground Camshaft, Delphi Fuel Injectors, Racetronix Fuel System & Fuel Pump, New LS1 Water Pump, Dynatech Hi-Flow Power Cats and X-Pipe with Corsa Exhaust, Vigilante Torque Converter Custom Stall at 2800 RPM, A&A Oversized Radiator and Transmission Cooler. We have been members in several different Corvette Clubs, including Diablo Valley, Northern California, Simi Valley and Millennium in Southern California and Las Vegas. We look forward to our new membership in this club and getting to know all of you. We have moved 22 times since 1969 to present. This counts moving into an area then moving in the same area albeit a different home or apartment. My profession is a Tunnel Construction Engineer/ Manager. Therefore we have to move to the jobs. We have two daughters that moved with us most of the time. As they got older they settled into their own while my wife and I continued the “Fiorentino Tradition” of moving. They both were married in Oahu, Hawaii as I had an assignment there for 3 years as the Project Manager for the H3-Highway Tunnel. They now each have one child and live in Tacoma, Washington and Missoula, Montana. We have lived in Northern & Southern California including Brentwood, Woodland Hills, Corona, Petaluma, Pasadena and Pleasanton. In Nevada we lived in Elko and Las Vegas. We can add Oahu, Hawaii, Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, Cambridge, Mass, Somerville, Mass, Boise, Idaho and Singapore. Then there were several short term assignments for just myself without the family. These short terms included Chengdu, China, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Melbourne, Australia, Seoul, South Korea, and Mindanao & Manila in the Philippines. I know I married the right woman after 22 moves and 38 years as we are still together, that’s really one in a million as they say. We'll hook up with members of the Glass Odyssey Corvette Club at 5 pm at Tweeten's restaurant in Port Orchard then caravan to the Veterans Home in Port Orchard (Retsil). After a short car show display for the vets in front of their Home we'll give the vets, who want to and are able, 10-15 minute rides over a pre-selected route in our Vettes. They exemplify my Golden Rule philosophy, that being, “Who has the gold makes the rules”. These folks, who are identified in Woodcook’s article elsewhere in this newsletter do, indeed, “have the gold”. Thank you! Members who wanted a variety of Corvette events to choose from should be REAL HAPPY this month. See page 5 for no less than (7) opportunities during May...and these are just what we know about as we go to press! We’ll likely learn of several more in the coming days so be sure to check the club web site occasionally for late breaking event news. www.CorvetteMarqueClub.com . We’ll try to publish as much info as we have available on our own club events/activities as well as those of other clubs. Some of the more popular annual events this month such as, “Cruise into Summer” in Kelowna, BC and “Big Sky” in Montana, fill up quickly so you’ll need to get plans and reservations made ASAP if not done already. Other stuff for your consideration: Item...We’re having a trophy case constructed to display in one place our club collection of awards, event memorabilia and current club activity information. The case will be in the Chevrolet showroom of our major club sponsor, Seaview Chevrolet – Pontiac – GMC. Currently most of this stuff is scattered around in various members’ houses, garages, closets or who-knowswhere and is seldom seen by anyone. If you have such an item that belongs to CMCS stashed somewhere gathering dust, please contact and arrange to get it to Jim McDonnell (#’s & e-mail on page 3) who is spearheading this project. Item...On June 14th…that’s a Wednesday…we’re joining up with the Glass Odyssey Corvette Club in their “Vette Rides for Veterans” event. A few details are in the Upcoming Activities pages in this newsletter. More will appear next month, but for now, get it on your schedule of “must do” events. This one will be fun and rewarding for the veterans and for us. Plan on it. Item...Our club e-mailing database that we use to notify members of coming events and activities is undergoing a much needed overhaul. Some folks change their e-mail address like they change their socks and, just like they don’t tell us when they last changed their socks, we never hear of the fresh e-mail address either. On 4/15/06 I sent a test message out to everyone currently on the “members only” group list that is used for this purpose. Did you get it? If you got that message and responded for confirmation, THANKS! If you did not get it, then it means that either the address we have for you is inaccurate, is no longer valid or never was there. You get the idea...but you probably don’t get any e mail from the club! If you find yourself in that category, and if you want to get back on the e mailing list, simply drop me a note at [email protected] and I’ll see that the correction is made. Still looks like the coming year’s going to be a wild ride, but you asked for it, so...DEAL WITH IT! Soon after he went for a drive at speeds up to 85 mph. He was enjoying the wind blowing his small amount of remaining hair until he saw flashing blue lights in the rear view mirror and heard the siren. I can get away, no problem, he thought, and floored the pedal. Having second thoughts, I am too old for this, he decided to pull over and wait for the officer to catch up. The officer pulled in behind and calmly walked up to the Corvette. “Sir”, he said, looking at his watch, “My shift ends in 20 minutes. If you can explain why you were speeding away from me with an excuse that I have not heard before, I’ll let you go.” The man looked at the officer with tears in his eyes and said, “Ten years ago my wife ran off with an officer from this town, and I thought you were bringing her back”. “Have a good day Sir” said the officer as he walked back to his cruiser. MyOtherCar™ Club Select Membership has been created with the members of the Corvette Marque Club of Seattle in mind. By Jari Kristensen, President of MyOtherCar™ Club MyOtherCar™ Select Sponsor Program is designed for individuals who would like to see a particular car, such as a the new Corvette C6-Z06, in the MyOtherCar™ Garage. As participants, you, together with up to three other Corvette connoisseurs, will enjoy your Z06 as drivers. But in addition, you will also benefit in the form of profit sharing when the car is driven by other members of the MyOtherCar™ club. Participation in the Select Sponsor Program is for a period of two years. You and each of the other co-sponsors make a contribution towards the purchase of the car based on a chosen percentage of the vehicle's value, up to a combined total of sixty percent. MyOtherCar™ Club covers the remaining share of the car's value. Participants in the Select Sponsor Program automatically become MyOtherCar™ Club members with access to the MyOtherCar™ Garage and receive an allotment of refundable miles they may use based on their contribution level. Participants share in the mileage profits when their selected car is driven by other members. To sign up for the MyOtherCar™ Select Sponsor Program, call 425-770-2832 or send an email to [email protected]. See you at www.MyOtherCar.com. What if instead of parking this 505 horsepower rocket for most of the year in the garage, you could share it with some of your best friends, forget about maintenance, and pay something more along the lines of sales tax instead of the full $75,000 price tag? Now if you and your friends could stand to gain from other folks driving this Z06 while you have a good time with another car, that would be quite a blast, right? We thought so, too. R eally Awesome D riving Event #5 by Kayla Main * * * REGISTRATION update * * * Your PRE-PAID RAD-gistration fee of $25 per car is due NLT 5/22/06 and gets you self-guided tour directions for both days, Things you may (2) commemorative wine glasses, (1) dash plaque, plus assorted entertainment goodies see on RAD throughout the weekend. Send your $25 check, payable to Kayla Main, to the club address: PO Box 534 Kirkland, WA 98083-0534. Late registrations (after 5/22) will be accepted but will NOT be guaranteed some of the listed event goodies due to required production lead time. Room prices may also be higher then, if they’re even available then, due to the block having been released. Avoid disappointment. Do it NOW… Event details… Our 5th and final RAD tour will take us to the Oregon coast on June 24 & 25, 2006. The event will officially launch on Saturday morning from a point TBD near Olympia, WA. Soon after the launch we’ll drop off of I-5 onto the back-roads and we won’t see the freeway again until sometime on Sunday afternoon. We’ll head off in a generally southwesterly direction and meander over hill and dale, around more than a few bends on genuine official Corvette roads and over at least one (maybe more) water crossing. This event is all about driving on some AWESOME roads. Eventually, we’ll end up in Seaside, OR at the Shilo Seaside Oceanfront Inn. (30 North Prom, Seaside, OR 97138 for those with GPS) At the Shilo we have nailed down a block of rooms starting at $119/night. Upgrades are available for those who so choose. Call (800) 222-2244 or (503) 738-9571 for reservations. Mention Corvette Marque Club to get our special discounted rate. Some people don’t relish the thought of getting up in the wee hours on a Saturday morning and driving a long distance before the event even starts. Your tour leaders are such people. For those of a similar mind set we’ll find a motel (TBD) near Olympia for Friday evening, have dinner somewhere, kick back, maybe play a little ‘31’ and get in the right frame of mind for the Saturday launch. As in all past RAD’s, you’re guaranteed to see stuff you’ve never seen before. As well as being the last one, this may just be the best RAD ever. Get your registration sent in and get your Seaside room reservation made while the room block is available. Plan for LOTS OF FUN. Keep watching this space for more previews… As with all past RAD events this event is open to all Corvette owners. Club membership is not required. You just need a Corvette, a sense of adventure, and a desire for Really Awesome Driving with like-minded folks. Questions? End of Summer Run to the Ocean by Corvettes de Olympia Saturday September 23, 2006 Each year in September we run to the ocean for our last official overnight event. This year we wish to invite more groups to join us. What do we do on this event? Absolutely nothing! That is correct, our goal is to relax and have some fun, so no car show, no detailing, no car wash, and no car prizes. The only thing we do as far as a contest is to do a dead bug count when we arrive at the hotel and the car with the most dead bugs wins a crisp $20. How cool is that? We will also be playing a few parking lot games when we arrive, so be ready to relive your youth. There is plenty to do at the ocean, you will have a few hours in the afternoon to go out and sight see and after the party there is plenty to do in town including a very nice Casino. So let us know if you would like to attend. Simply send me an e-mail to add you to our list. Be sure and reserve your room. Vince Punteney, CdeO President, (360) 491-7379, [email protected] Laps From the Past or “Marque in Time” A CMCS history feature by Ben Benninghoff 40 LAPS AGO: MAY ’66 Jack Goffette gets the meeting started at Alan Green Chevrolet. Due to Steve’s “Gay Nineties” tour in Tacoma the reading of the minutes was not ready to speed things up. Jack noted the club needs a committee to head up a future Tech and Safety Inspections and have emergency equipment at hand for any possible use while at PRI. Jack also said that Ed Baker recommends that every member should consider carrying a First Aid Kit and Fire Extinguisher in their Corvette. An updated members list and Constitution would be mailed out soon. The club gave a big hand to John Thomas and Sue Stanley for their great efforts they put into the club newsletter. Letters to prospective members were discussed at the Board meeting, and about creating a ‘kit’ for new members. Ed Baker is working on a club jacket. The N.G.T. and Tyee Triumph clubs are invited to our next general membership meeting and dinner in June. Passed, the resolution to purchase a trophy by the Program Chairperson to be given to visiting clubs as a way to thank them for coming to an event of ours. Jack also asked the members to think about what kind of activities and events they would like to participate in; Wally Arrowsmith noted he has some club questionnaires some members have filled out and will see they get turned in for review. Roger Orth asked about the club’s position with the Western Washington Sports Car Council; John Thomas said he would have more information by the next Boards Meeting. Robert & Norma Rhone were voted into membership by a majority vote. Upcoming events; Autocross at the Yakima Firing Center, another Autocross and Economy Run at University Village, and a race at OIR & PRI. 30 LAPS AGO: MAY ’76 President Dale Ellis presides over the meeting following dinner at the Buccaneer Restaurant. Former members Dave & Sandy Richards, along with new members voted in Steve & Linda Turner, and Tex Howick, and affiliate member Michelle Phelps, bring the total membership to 113 with another 20 ‘almost’ eligible in the wings. The question arose concerning membership status when two people co-own a Corvette; the Board agreed as long as both have a 50-50 investment in the Corvette there should not be a problem. An updated Corvette and Owner list will be made in June/July. Around 200 Corvette’s took part in the Yakima Sun Weekend Yakima Sun Weekend tour starts from Issaquah VIP’s and meet up with other Corvette clubs in North Bend, Bremerton Concour and Autocross, WWSCC notes a Mini Mother’s Autoslalom and an Autopilot II Autoslalom. Frank O. passed out an organizational Chart for CMCS/NWACC events in August. Kevin explained what NWACC stood for, and rule books can be purchased from the Millens. Len talked about the past two parking sessions, thanking all who helped. Dale discussed prospective designs for wall mount trophies and dash plaques, and tossed around several names for the event. Dee McDuffie has additional club rosters. Frank O. mentioned a verbal battle ensued at the Buccaneer over the payment of meals; Buc’s 43, CMCS 39, which was the amount paid; replay clearly showed the Buc was out of bounds-ben. John Thomas resigns as Equipment Chairperson as the Board decides to have a ‘work day’ to inventory and clean up all the club’s equipment, and will be stored at Sam’s new garage. Dee will get a price list on the insignias for our name tags. Club jacket’s ‘86’ due to low interest. Our NWACC Events were discussed; suggested name was “Fiberglass Fever”, while Doug Fordham will prepare a menu for the party. 20 LAPS AGO: MAY '86 El Capitan Frank Brese gets things back to order after the feeding frenzy at Shakey’s in Totem Lake. All the Board Officers were present (of course, there was food to be eaten!- ben). Rick Stark hosted a Car Care Session in Kirkland prior to the General Membership meeting. NCRS successfully avoids last year’s pitfalls with the Annual Owner’s Picnic at Lake Sammamish State Park. Seems the previous year had some problems organizing parking areas for Corvette owners and their families following in the family steel cars, who had to park closer to Issaquah than the picnic area; hence the levels of irateness that coincided with the distance required to walk to the picnic; ‘hot coal’s’ were not needed to BBQ as most brought enough of their own heat sources. The Mountlake Terrace Community Fair Day’s Parade needed 6-7 Corvettes to carry hand wavers around. Anchorage, Alaska is conducting a raffle for a ’62 Corvette; tickets are $5 a piece or 5 for $20 as proceeds will go to the American Heart Association, Byron Crocker has tickets. Rose Eckenberg is voted into membership bring the total to 88 with 1 prospective in the wings. Pacific Corvette and Classical Glass Corvette Club pull their resources to host the very “1st Annual Corvette Wash & Shine” in Puyallup. V&T Tour XI “Memorial Day Massacre” is a 3 day event in Reno, Nevada, as perchance is also the sight for the NCRS National Convention at the “New” Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Sparks, while the “15th Annual Big Sky Corvette Convention” was going on, hosted by the infamous “Funseekers Corvette & Yacht Club” in Whitefish, Montana. A Richard Talline from Allentown, PA., writes to CMCS all the way across the country to ask the question; “water keeps getting into my gas tank when it rains, GM says I’m the only Corvette person to ever experience this, they don’t have any clue, and so, can anyone there that has a ’85 Corvette help?” You can call Richard at 215-767-9533, but after 6 PM please. (Think Richard is still waiting…?-Ben 10 LAPS AGO: MAY ’96 A tribute to Zora Arkus-Duntov, 1910-1996, the “Father of the Corvette” is featured on the newsletter cover with Zora sitting inside his famous Sebring SS Corvette numbered #1. Mr. Man…I mean, President Gary Main, calls the meeting to order in between hors D’oeuvres and entrée’s at the Original Oyster House on Discovery Bay following an all day outing to the Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade, where 17 members plus 2 prospective members; Vince & Chris Perriello, joined in to do some serious damage to the local hard shell aquatic wildlife. Membership standing at 133. Western Corvette Supply hosts another Show n Shine as folks from the north in B.C are coming down in force to try and walk off with some of our hardware, and, need 35 rooms for an overnighter. Cloyd notes he’ll have the club’s promo sheet ready prior to the Western show for our show on August 8th. State Bill 5250; “Clunker Bill” passes the state house thanks to everyone’s efforts from contacting your state legislators and NCCC’s assistance in getting the word out. Dues sent out to WCCC (who was also a major factor in getting State Bill 5250 passed) to continue our support of their organization. Congratulations to Kayla Main, Barbara Jackson, and Sandy Lazaroff for going where no man has ever gone before, well, for about 30 years anywhere; they brought the club Constitution’s language up to modern terminology, a feat no one else wanted to tackle…well done, girls! A new sponsor, Sports Car International of Lake City Way, made their first sponsorship dues payment to the club beginning with the June issue. Membership is at 135 with two perspectives eligible next month. John Bell is organizing an overnight wine tour of Western Washington in July. Newsletter editor Cloyd Jackson produces a color cover at his expense, but the club agrees to cover the finances for this and future newsletters as it represents a significant portion of our club’s awareness to the community and other car clubs in and out of state. John Thomas, our club representative to NWACC notes lots of activities to get involved in all summer long. President Gary Main suggests getting more participation from the membership to “chair or organize” a CMCS event was, each time someone hosts an event a ‘chit’ with their name drops into a hat. At the end of a year a ‘chit’ is drawn and the person whose name is on the chit wins a free 1 year membership. 5 LAPS AGO: MAY ’01 AND the cover goes to…Wayne ‘If you can’t remember the sixties you weren’t there’ Kanaby and his yellow 1966 327-300 HP 4 speed…and it got chrome bumpers! President Jan Cockrum calls a halt to all the buttered fingers and seafood consumption going on at the Original Oyster House on Discovery Bay after the 106th Annual Sequim Parade that saw 59 club members and 5 guests partook in, all prearranged by the ever comparable Jim & Linda Micus, just like last year(s). New members voted in at the meeting were; Jeff & Penny Evans, Gene & Gail Haubrich, Art Winn & Pam Ducolon, and, Doug & Marlene Houser, bringing the total to 255. Jane Shimanek is collecting old cell phones for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Cassie Black is beginning to look for locations for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner and the Holiday Bake Auction where proceeds go to the Dee Ann Esping Memorial Charity Committee. Fred Waits is looking for club equipment to bring the inventory list up to date. Newsletter editor Cloyd has a computer drive go-south where a significant amount of club history was stored, the data will be tried to be recovered and the club will help out with the expenses. Western Corvette Supply hosts another Show n Shine at the Edmonds Community College while Willamette Valley Corvettes in Salem, Oregon, runs their Loyalty Days Celebration event. Jane and Verlene puts on ‘another’ hat organizing the first CMCS Lady’s Spring Tea “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party” where a $5 ‘Tea Tariff’ is imposed. The ‘boys’ sensing another Boston Tea Party uprising favors a side trip to Hooters to commune with the local wildlife. Well, that’s about it kids wrapping up another session of your Laps From The Past, oh, wait…what’s that, Jan…you say the President’s Trophy is missing? How did that happen...well, OK, I’ll ask…auh, if anyone has seen or knows the whereabouts of our club’s President’s Trophy is that’s been part of our club’s heritage for…well, I don’t exactly know for how long, Jan sure would like to get it back…someday. Stay tuned for more updates on this grand event! Highway Cleanup Report - April 15th by Dave Woodcook The first scheduled cleanup in a year brought yet another gloomy, rainy forecast for the determined trash hunters of CMCS. Even as we met in the parking lot to carefully lay out our plan of attack, mother nature brought another bought of her recent waves of wind, rain and seemingly never ending gloom. Not to be discouraged, the eight dedicated warriors who so generously donated their coveted Saturday morning faced the forces of nature with courage and determination. Donned with pride in orange vests and hard hats, boots and gloves we set out to do battle with whatever lay waiting in the dreaded ditches of North Seattle. As we approached our would-be nemesis I-5, the heavens parted, laying way to dry and sun as though mother nature conceded to our quest for supremacy of the litter laden byways. 90 minutes of hand to hand battle with styrofoam, cardboard and hubcaps left us victorious once again over the litter lined shoulders of North Seattle. Riding into the sunset in our dirty boots and muddy SUV's we scoffed at Adopt-Trash stretch knowing we again bested our formidable adversary I-5. Many thanks to Rachelle Woodcook, Gary Main, Jim McDonnell, Mona Cox, Bill Benn, Nancy Benn and Dan Roupe. (And Thank You Dave Woodcook, from the Board and Editor).
