They Missed It
Pay attention! Watch this wonder
that God is going to perform before
you now! (1 Samuel 12:16, MSG)
Every year around the beginning of
October, I take a break from my work
and travel to Laity Lodge Retreat
Center near Leakey, Texas, to meet
with a group of pastors I have been
with every year since graduating seminary. For five
days we nestle ourselves along the Frio River, deep in
the heart of the Texas Hill Country, to check in with
one another, discuss biblical concepts and support
each other in ministry. It has become an annual Sabbath. I do not miss it for anything.
This year, one night in particular became a memorable moment. We were all sitting outside on a crystalclear night, the kind of night where you could count
satellites steadily strolling across the Milky Way. Some
in the group were tired and decided to call it quits
early, against our requests for them to stay up. The
rest of us stayed. Less than ten minutes after they
went inside, the brightest most dazzling shooting star
I’ve ever seen in my life started at one end of the sky
and trailed all the way over to the other side before
petering out. It was incredible. In the silence of our
amazement, a friend of mine jumped up and exclaimed, “They missed it! They missed it! This is exactly
why we come out here at night, but they went in early and missed it!”
There is always a great deal of activity going on
at Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church. Each
event, each gathering, each planned thing
that we do is there for the sole purpose of helping you not miss the shooting stars in your life.
As disciples of Jesus Christ, the eyes we are given are the eyes of faith geared towards looking
out at a world filled with the possibilities of
God’s work in us and in those around us. So
don’t miss it:
Don’t miss knowing what’s happening in our
community nights, where we welcome groups
from the community that are reaching out to
help people dealing with issues of family and
finance and mental health.
Don’t miss being part of a small group in the
life of the church, the place where we do life
together.
Don’t miss Operation Christmas Child or the
Angel Tree.
Don’t miss the music of the December Messiah
concert that will fill your spirit with joy.
Don’t miss the many things mentioned in this
publication that are there to help you grow as a
follower of Jesus Christ.
I am always eager to see what God has in store
for us next in the life of this great church. May
our eyes be open and our hearts be receptive
to Christ, who streams across a starry sky with a
trail as bright as the sun.

C
elp Our Deacons
Our Deacons provide care for the many members of our church who are ill, in care facilities,
facing loss, or recovering from surgery. Join the
Deacons in brightening the day and lives of others! Here are some ways you can help:


Our freezer always needs meals, desserts and
soups. Please prepare an entrée. Store in servings of four in disposable containers, label and
date them. Place them in the Caring Kitchen
freezer outside the main kitchen on the first
floor. For other freezer needs, please contact
Ann Partin at [email protected] or 972-6997645.
Let us know if someone is ill or facing surgery or
could use a visit. Contact Chandra at 972-2388103, ext. 306 or www.canyoncreekpres.org with
any information or questions.
Deacons on Duty
Each Sunday, three Deacons are stationed at the
Welcome Center. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to stop by. Deacons
on Duty also take flower deliveries every Sunday. If
you know of someone that could use a flower delivery and visit to brighten their day, please contact
Chandra in the church office at 972-238-8103, ext.
306, or [email protected].
In-Home Communion
Every Communion Sunday after church, groups of
Deacons take communion to those who are ill, or
home-bound. This is a wonderful way to extend
God’s love to those who cannot make it to church on
Sunday Morning.
If you would like to receive communion, or if you
know someone we should contact, please let us
know. Contact Chandra at 972-238-8103, ext. 306 or
[email protected].
CPC has an active prayer ministry that offers
the following opportunities for participation:
Prayer Partners
Prayer Partners is a group of CCPC women who
commit to pray for their assigned partner every day.
Partners are reassigned bi-monthly. They meet for
breakfast and fellowship on the first Saturday of
each month. If you have an interest in becoming a
Prayer Partner or want more information, contact Pat Markell at 972-235-3295
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Wednesdays, 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm, 102
Are you a knitter or want to be a knitter? We can
teach you! There is a group of devoted members and friends of
CCPC who support both the Prayer and Pastoral Care ministries by
making “prayer shawls”. As each
shawl is made, the knitter prays for
peace, healing and comfort for
the person who will receive it. The
Pastors and Deacons continually
share how these shawls provide comfort to their recipients. Shawls are simple to make and can be
knitted or crocheted.
For more information, please contact Nancy Progelhof at 469-360-4059 or [email protected].
Open Hearts Prayer Bulletin
A Prayer Bulletin is sent every
week to members of CCPC
who would like to pray for
those in need. Names of
church members and friends
with all kinds of needs are
listed on this e-mail bulletin. If
you want to receive this weekly e-mail or be included for prayer, please contact Chandra at
[email protected].
Prayer Cards
Prayer cards are available in the pews in the
Sanctuary. If you have a prayer need, fill out a card
and place it in the prayer box located in the Atrium
or Narthex. These requests will be included in the
prayer bulletin.

andel’s Messiah
December 7, 5:00 pm
Every five years or so, the Sanctuary Choir presents
George Frideric Händel’s beloved oratorio, Messiah.
This year, the Sanctuary Choir will present Part I, the
Christmas portion, with soloists Kristen Shepard, soprano; Debra Scroggins, mezzo-soprano; Peter
Tiggelaar, tenor; and Alex Lagos, bass. Accompanied by chamber orchestra, the concert will be followed by a reception in the Atrium. Childcare is
provided.
orchestra have presented this music, and its famous
chorus, Hallelujah, has been sung in shopping malls
by random groups of singers. Choral music is often
called the most democratic art form, because it
truly is open to anyone with singing ability, regardless of training. For many volunteer church choristers, singing Messiah is their first foray into ‘classical’
music—music that is timeless—and is still being sung
350 years after it was written.
Written over the space of 24 days, Messiah has
been called the most famous Christian music ever
written. It is performed by massive choirs of 300 singers with the world’s great orchestras, but is also accessible to local congregations. Church choirs of all
sizes, accompanied by piano, organ, or chamber

The study is focused on bringing Christ

a rainbow, a heart, a star, etc. Come join us!
PYC High school bible study will meet in

Operation Christmas Child
Begins Sunday, October 19
On Sunday, November 9, CCPC’s high school students will partner with youth from St. Philip’s Presbyterian Church in Hurst to serve at the Church Under
the Bridge in Waco. Church Under the Bridge began with a Christian couple and a few Baylor students who started meeting with a small group of
Waco’s homeless under the Interstate 35 bridge in
1992. Since then, the church has grown to encompass a large multi-cultural population of Waco’s
homeless citizens, community members, and students.
Join the Live Wires Middle
School Youth Group for Operation Christmas Child! Gather
your family, friends, or small
group to put together plastic
shoeboxes for children all over the world!
High schoolers will meet from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on
November 8 to make sandwiches and
prepare food to take with us. We’ll leave
early the morning of the 9th to join members of Church Under the Bridge for worship and lunch. High Schoolers will not
meet for youth dinner or PYC youth
group on Sunday evening, November 9.
A shoebox can teach a child about the love of
God, lead him or her to faith in Christ, inspire pastors, and plant new churches. What goes into the
box is fun, but what comes out is eternal. Participating in Operation Christmas Child is a tangible
way to join Christians all over the world to spread
God’s good news.
The middle schoolers will be collecting filled shoeboxes at the Operation Christmas Child table in
the Atrium from Sunday, October 19 to Sunday,
November 9. Be a part of changing lives through
the power of a simple gift!

ews from North Star Learning Center
We are so excited to report that our first ever Parenting Seminar that was held in tandem with a kid’s
seminar was a HUGE success with over 50 parents in
attendance. An educational and fun time was had
by all!
Classes are full and our students are learning about
Fall, Community Helpers, Thankfulness and Manners.
As we get closer to the Holiday season we will begin
re-telling the story of Jesus’ birth during our chapel
time. Our annual Holiday Program will be December
19 at 12:30 pm and all of you are very invited to attend. You will be moved by the Nativity Story retold
with the help of our four year olds.
Thank you for the help in collecting “Box Tops”. There
is a collection box in the atrium or you can place
them into the wooden box located near the reception desk near the school. Each box top collected
yields 10 cents! That “extra” income is used for special purchases like our recent 8 seat stroller called
“The Gaggle” which
allows us to take our
youngest preschoolers out efficiently
and safely.
North Star Learning
Center again thanks
you for your support,
prayers and care.
We are blessed to
be a ministry of

MISSION
A
Word from Gwen Berner, Moderator
The Mission Committee continues to be grateful for the
generosity of our CCPC congregation. Thank you to
those of you who earned and collected "Community
Bucks" by shopping at Tom Thumb. These were given
to New Beginnings, a local domestic violence program.
We are excited about CCPC's external focus for mission and outreach. We look forward to a successful
Stewardship season with this theme in mind.
As we approach the holidays we hope that our Mission activities again demonstrate a concern and love
for those here and abroad who need our help and
support.
A
ssisting the Refugee Children
This fall, Mission assembled and delivered 230 hygiene
and activity kits to be given to the children who are
coming into the Fort Worth Catholic Charities Children’s Center. Every month FWCC receives about sixty
children who are coming into the country with almost
literally nothing. We were able to accomplish this with
generous contributions from you and the hands of
about twenty volunteers. Every child receives a Bible,
a toy, and numerous other necessary and play items
to welcome them and demonstrate the love of Christ
in action. Thank you for your support and participation!
F
Throughout this coming year, we are looking for
ways to connect you and engage your participation in the foreign mission work of CCPC.
C
hristmas Mission Opportunities
Angel Tree
We have a great opportunity for leadership development for Angel Tree. Sylvia
Cornette has led the charge
for this Christmas ministry to
the children of incarcerated
individuals. She is wanting to
“train up” a new leader this
year, who can “shadow” her
and learn the ropes. Then
that person would take the lead next year with Sylvia
as “back up.”
There are many opportunities to participate besides
leadership. By now, callers have been contacting
families and getting pertinent information. Help is
needed for publicity, setting up the trees (midNovember), choosing angels to sponsor, and help
with the wrapping party.
Christmas Eve Austin Street Dinner
Kelle Plummer is also looking for an apprentice leader
she can train to take over this fulfilling Christmas ministry. Many hands make light work! Shoppers, cooks,
delivery people, and servers are needed for the annual Christmas Eve dinner. For more information, contact Kelle at kplum1956@aol.
ocus on Foreign Mission
If you didn’t get a chance to attend the Sunday
School presentation in late August by John Nelson,
Bryan Stockton, and Ashley Dantzler, we hope you will
stay tuned for further “full length” presentations to inform you of what is going on with our partnership work
(Villages in Partnership in Malawi) and also with Ashley’s missionary work in Kenya.

Nebraska Wesleyan Concert
Thursday, January 8, 2015
7:30 pm
On Wednesday evening, January, William
A. Wyman, professor of Music and Director of Choral
Activities at Nebraska Wesleyan University (and son
of CCPC member Marian Wyman and the late Harp
Wyman) brings his University Choir for a concert here
in the sanctuary.
The Emmy-nominated select 48-voice ensemble will
present a concert while on their Winter 2015 Tour.
The choir is recognized throughout the country and
internationally for performing excellence and regularly presents a varied repertoire rich in global diversity. Since 1977, the Wesleyan choir has undertaken
seven foreign concert tours and two choral residencies in Hawaii in addition to annual concert tours
throughout the United States.
The University choir has appeared as the featured
collegiate ensemble at the NMEA Convention and
the Nebraska Choral Directors Association Convention. In 1986, 1988 and 1990 the choir appeared on
the program of the American Choral Directors North
Central Convention.
The choir has performed at CCPC two previous times
through the years and always brings awe and
amazement to concert-goers. This year’s music on
January 8 is an exciting and eclectic mix of pieces
from around the world and from many cultures. Invite your friends and neighbors to enjoy a wonderful

Exciting Events Ahead
for the Children’s Choirs
As the Children’s Choirs kicked off the year in
September it was clear from their joyful enthusiasm and dedication that we were embarking on
another wonderful year of praise-making. After sharing their music in worship in September and October,
both choirs look forward to the upcoming events of
the fall and Advent. Covenant Choir is preparing to
sing with the Adult Choir for the meeting of Grace
Presbytery which will be held at CCPC on November
21 and 22. The Adult and Covenant Choirs will be part
of the worship service, Saturday morning, November
22.
Advent begins on November 30
Cherub and Covenant Choirs along with our
Celebration Ringers will be preparing seasonal anthems for the Lessons and Carols 11:05
service the morning of December 14. There
will be Lessons and Carols at both the 9:00 and 11:05
services, which will also include the Revelation Youth
Choir and Jubilation Ringers.
6.
Children's choirs take a holiday break
The children will be looking forward to January 11 when our schedule resumes. The first
Sunday back the children find out what the
Spring Musical will be—a well-kept secret until then. If
you missed being a part of the choirs in September,
January is the perfect time to jump in and join us as
we gear up for the Spring Musical and prepare songs
for Palm Sunday. If you have questions, contact Marsha Ray at [email protected] or call her at
the church (972) 238-8103, ext. 318.
