Log on to a e m p o w e r. c o m ! 3 A E M AEM—THE HISTORY BEHIND THE COMPANY H I S T O RY THE EARLY 90’S IT’S LIKE THEY KNEW WE WERE COMING S T I L L G O I N G O F F R O A D A N D T H E E M E R G E N C E O F S P O R T C O M PA C T It all started on October 1st, 1987, the same day the Whittier Narrows Earthquake rocked Southern California. AEM opened its doors as a dyno-equipped, custom tuning and fabrication shop at 303 West Artesia Boulevard in Compton, CA, and the industry hasn’t stopped shaking! It was a humble beginning for AEM, which “shared” about 3,000 square feet with Redline Distribution (it was Redline’s building), and housed its dyno in the Redline warehouse. The lobby, which was slightly larger than a jail cell, had Bosch fuel schematics on the wall and tech manuals on the coffee table—it was about pure performance. However, behind the counter loomed the “Wall of Shame,” a collection of photos and cut outs that would land us in the pokey in today’s politically correct world! In the early 90s, AEM began developing V6 Honda engines (Legend motors) for desert racers. The original program was for Bob Land’s Class 1 Baja car. AEM built the engines and designed and built the headers, exhaust and intake manifolds including the ITB set up. Lands’ original Baja car made 190 HP at the wheels from an engine that lasted about one race when we first got it, and left AEM putting down 260 at the wheels from an engine that would last the entire season. Cosworth performed the engine machine work for this engine program and this is when we began our relationship with them. In class 1600 the Toyota 4AG engine was dominant and AEM tuned about 70% of those cars. Our affiliation with Weber and later Mikuni allowed us to work on an enormous amount of off road vehicles. Recalls Concialdi, “At one time we had our hands on virtually every off road and stadium truck in competition.” It didn’t take long for AEM to build its reputation. Before long the garage was replete with all types of high performance vehicles including Ford GTs, Shelby Cobras, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Lotuses, Dolphin Can-Am cars, Baja rigs and Pro stadium trucks. We even had some unusual vehicles like Chenoweth’s US Army recon vehicle that was developed for duty in the Middle East, and a 1928 Studebaker Indy car. As company founder and Chief Engineer John Concialdi recalls, “These were the salad days, when we didn’t have any money but were having way more fun than should have been allowed!” Before long the next generation of Hot Rodders started making their way to AEM’s doors, only this time instead of Flatheads and small block Chevys, these cars were four cylinder front-drives with high compression, snotty cams, and nitrous or custom turbo systems. A street racer named E.T. Saffon who ended up working at AEM until he relocated out of state in 2001 created one of AEM’s first renowned Hondas. E.T.’s 1988 Integra had a fully-built B-series with individual carbs and a heavy load of nitrous, and he won so many street races The Late 80’S Log on to a e m p o w e r. c o m ! In addition to working with the racers mentioned above, AEM also began tuning more EFI vehicles, and during this period tuned engines for Cosworth, HKS, Motec, TRD and others. AEM was truly at the ground level of the emergence of sport compact drag racing. In addition to tuning and fabricating for many of the street racers of the time, when Frank Choi created the Battle of the Imports in 1990 AEM signed on as the Title Sponsor and continued its support of the series for several years until the sport compact series battles began between BOTI, the IDRC, NIRA and the NHRA. THE MID 90’S OFF ROAD & RACING ROOTS Some of the more memorable vehicles AEM worked on in the early days included the stadium trucks, Baja rigs, Bruce Ziegler’s Ford GT, Steve Murphy’s Cobra, a P3 Ferrari, Bob Glidden’s Pro Stock car and Chenoweth’s Middle East recon buggy. The stadium truck development represented the early days of AEM when the company was still the R&D department for Redline/Weber Carburetors, and AEM tuned the carburetors on Ivan Stewart’s and Spencer Low’s Pro Stadium trucks, Rick & Roger Mears’ Class 1 buggies, Rod and Steve Milllens’ Stadium Trucks and Jeff Huber’s and Walker Evans’s Pro Stadium trucks. The Chenoweth vehicle was being developed for Middle East duty and we developed the IDF Series carb for Off Road vehicles on it. This carb later became the IDFXE Plus and is still used today. At launch, the Chenoweth buggy had a 24v electrical system for communications equipment and a huge machine gun strapped to the roof for defense. in the car that he had to take the AEM logos off his windows so people would race him. AEM worked with many of the West Coast racers who put sport compact drag racing on the map, including Brian “Buddha” Kim and Tony Fuchs from Cyber Racing, Darren Ishitani, Abel Ibarra, Russ Matusevich, Adam Saruwatari, and Stephan Papadakis. Fuchs ran an Integra with AEM-tuned Weber carbs and nitrous, and would spend all nighters on our dyno (along with Kim and Ishitani) squeezing every pony out of the engine. Ibarra built what we believe to be the first PRO RWD car on the West Coast—a Mazda R100 running a 13B Wankel with a gigantic turbo and nitrous—and AEM did the EFI calibration. The R100 (“Flaco”) came off the trailer at a Battle of the Imports and ran an 8.60. This car would run into the sevens before its retirement. The Ford GT was one of the most impressive cars AEM had in the garage at that time, despite all of the Ferraris and Lambos on the floor. This car had four AEMtuned Weber carbs on top of a 289 cid engine. John Concialdi recalls, “We took the GT for a rip and hit 140 in no time…we’re lucky that helicopters weren’t around then! But what I remember most about this car was its balance…it was perfect.” Steve Murphy’s Shelby Cobra was another car that was impossible to forget. Murphy, the VP of IMPAC, raced the Cobra in Laguna Seca Vintage class and won his class that year. Concialdi was the crew chief for his team and tuned the carbs. This car didn’t lose a race all season. The #12 P3 Ferrari was another screamer. This car had a V6 motor running a triple-stack of AEM-tuned Weber carbs down the center of the intake manifold. AEM also did a lot of carb work on Lamborghinis because of our affiliation with Weber. The vintage traffic we saw back in this day would represent tens of millions of dollars in vintage cars today. M A N U FAC T U R I N G R O OT S Our manufacturing roots began in 1995, when Concialdi conceived the Cold Air intake design for sport compacts. States Concialdi, “The idea came to us when we were looking at an SAE horsepower equation. We noticed that heat played a major role in power production, which we confirmed with our own testing. Just lift the hood of any car after a few passes on the dyno and the extreme heat coming out just tells you that the air in there is thin!” But it wasn’t until testing different fitments that we realized the correct combination of length and diameter of inlet pipe also played a major role in making power. After several iterations, the 21-400 intake was born for 88-91 Honda CRXs. It wasn’t long before other companies began copying this design, and in 1997 Sport Compact Car did an air intake shootout. AEM’s Cold Air blew the competition away, and this line was off to the races. In 1996 AEM’s Honda engine building experience led to the creation of the TRU-TIME adjustable cam gear. Prior to its release, fully-built Honda engines with modified heads were using highly modified stock cam gears to advance and retard timing. “There were no indication marks on the gears and they would break all the time,” noted Concialdi. “Esslinger had just developed an adjustable cam gear for four-cylinder Ford engines and we approached them about making one for Hondas and Toyotas. They weren’t interested in making one for us, but they were an invaluable resource for us when we developed our own line. I can’t thank them enough.” Concialdi took this opportunity to fix all of the problems he had seen by adding precision laseretched marks, an OE belt tooth profile on the gear edge, and hard anodizing on the outer edge. AEM HISTORY AND TIMELINE AEM HISTORY AND TIMELINE 4 A E M H I S T O RY Log on to a e m p o w e r. c o m ! 5 A E M THE SHIFT TO MANUFACTURING, NEW INNOVATIONS AND PRO COMPACT DRAG RACING By mid-1997, demand for AEM products was so great that the company was having difficulty managing the manufacturing, engine building and tuning ends of the business. Keep in mind that during this period when a customer called for an intake, the sales person would walk the order to manufacturing, which would then make the part and ship it to the customer. With little experience in stock flow, projections, bulk ordering, etc, the company was at a crossroads. Looking for advice, Concialdi contacted his former boss at Redline Peter Neuwirth. “I asked Peter how I should grow the company,” stated Concialdi. “He and his son Greg met with me asked me a bunch of questions and by the end of the discussion they offered to be partners in the business. This was a huge stroke of luck because we sorely needed their business expertise.” A couple weeks later on October 16, 1997, AEM changed ownership and Concialdi remained as Chief Engineer. Almost overnight, AEM shifted gears and dropped the hammer into full time manufacturing. The flurry of product development was about to begin. Shortly after the change of ownership, AEM released its line of TRU POWER pulleys. “I was never comfortable with swapping crank pulleys because it eliminates the harmonic dampener, and cars need those to reduce engine noise, vibration and harshness,” commented Concialdi. “While that’s not a big deal on a race engine, many of the racers at the time also drove their cars on the street, and we didn’t want to be shaking their engines down. I knew we could net the same results by under-driving the accessories, so we developed pulleys for alternators, power steering systems and water pumps.” Staying true to its racing roots, AEM stayed involved in sport compact drag racing by working with top racers like Abel Ibarra, Adam Saruwatari, Ed Bergenholtz and of course Stephan Papadakis. In 1999, Papadakis introduced a tube-frame frontdrive Honda Civic hatchback at Battle of the Imports, and not long after AEM became the title sponsor of the car. The car was built by Papadakis and Shaun Carlson of NuFormz (currently racing Pro Stock in the NHRA PowerAde Series), and was the first of its kind in the United States. Although Concialdi had worked on Papadakis’s car when it was a unibody, this sponsorship marked the beginning of a prosperous relationship between AEM and Papadakis Racing, as AEM grew its product line and Papadakis went on to dominate sport compact drag racing by setting records that were not only thought unattainable in frontdrive cars, but took his competition two years to eclipse once he moved on to Pro RWD competition. Papadakis was SEMA’s Import Racer of the Year in 1999. In 2002, on the heels of an ad campaign that had the industry buzzing with rumors over what the company was up to, AEM returned to its tuning roots with the introduction of its Plug & Play Programmable Engine Management System. The goal was to create a stand-alone engine management program that racers at any level would find attainable. At its launch, most comparable stand-alone systems cost two to three times as much and did not include all of the enabled features included in the AEM EMS. Much of the 2002 racing season was spent developing the Pro RWD Civic, an 1,800 HP, twin turbocharged, NSX-powered beast that debuted in 2003. In addition to the new drag car, the team was brought in house and Papadakis remained as driver, and eventually took over crew chief duty to manage the entire program. 2003 marked the introduction of AEM’s V2 intake and our BRUTE FORCE intake line for trucks and SUVs, and saw the new drag car begin to pile up records in NHRA Sport Compact’s Pro RWD class. The Drag Civic became the fifth car to join the NHRA’s Sport Compact 200 MPH Club, was the first drag Honda to break 200 MPH, and was the first Honda to eclipse the seven- and six-second E.T. barriers with a best of 6.90 @ 207.8 MPH. In 2004, AEM dramatically expanded its electronics program by adding ignition modules, UEGO controllers, a full sensor program, and factory training seminars for tuning shops (that are still held today), and became the first company to offer Hybrid intakes which are direct-fit intakes for Hondas with engine swaps. The Drag Civic came into its own after a crash in testing before the season. Although the car missed the first three NHRA events, Papadakis went on to pilot it to the number one qualifying spot in six of its next seven events, made 11 final round appearances with six victories, set the national Elapsed Time record in NHRA three times culminating in a 6.54 @ 211.73 MPH, and finished the season as runner-up in NHRA Pro RWD. As the industry evolved, AEM diversified with it. The company was looking to expand its engine breathing product line to include headers and exhaust systems but was reluctant to begin development from ground zero. Fortunately, during a conversation between Concialdi and DC Sports co-founder H I S T O RY Darrell Contreras in late 2004, Concialdi casually inquired whether DC Sports was open to a merger, and to Concialdi’s surprise, Contreras said to make him an offer. Those who have followed the growth of the SpoCom industry know that DC Sports is the brand of choice for headers and exhausts, and the chance to combine these two companies meant the ability to deliver the best engine breathing products from air filter to exhaust tip. In 2005, AEM acquired the business of DC Sports and since has expanded the brand to include more manufacturers while adding turbo performance products to its cache. AEM Racing finished fourth in NHRA Pro RWD competition and retained the World’s Quickest Honda title with a personal best of 6.52 @ 215 MPH, and campaigned its first Drift car, which Papadakis also drove. Like the Pro RWD Civic, the AEM Drift Honda S2000 was built in house at AEM using off the shelf parts. In a breakout season, Papadakis qualified in five of the seven events he entered and had a best Finish in the “Great 8” in Chicago while notching Co-Rookie of the Year Honors in the FormulaD Drift series and earning a coveted D1 GP driver’s license. Two thousand and six marked another year of revolutionary product development for AEM with the introduction of the DRYFLOW air filter—the first aftermarket air filter that does not require filter oil to trap dirt and filters at an average of 99.4% efficiency, and the release of its Universal Programmable Engine Management System for all vehicles. With an uncertain future surrounding the Pro classes in sport compact drag racing, AEM Racing retired the Pro RWD drag car and elected to campaign a two-car drift team. Along with Papadakis’s S2000, we added a Drift 350Z to the stable and hired top-five driver Tanner Foust to pilot it. Foust is currently in third place in FormulaD behind the GM and Mopar factory-backed teams. Also, after setting two Bonneville Land Speed records in the 1.5L and 1.8L engine class in 2004, the AEM Bonneville Civic, under the control of Lead Electronics Engineer John Romero, continued to set records in the 1.5L blown engine class with a 195 MPH official top speed. Y2K AND BEYOND SPOCOM DRAG EXPLOSION AND A RETURN TO TUNING ROOTS AEM HISTORY AND TIMELINE AEM HISTORY AND TIMELINE THE LATE 90’S The turn of the century marked a major shift in AEM product development, as the company expanded its hard parts to include fuel delivery components, developed the Air Bypass Valve for its Cold Air intake systems and was beginning development on its Plug & Play programmable engine management system. Once again, our work with racers led to the development of fuel delivery parts. At any given race, there were hundreds of high horsepower cars in the pits trying to force large amounts of fuel through factory components that were incapable of supplying the volume of fuel needed. Noted Concialdi, “The problem was obvious at the track, and we jumped on the opportunity to make parts that would eliminate the fuel delivery issues that were hindering the advancement of these cars’ elapsed times.” The air bypass valve was another product that was met with great enthusiasm from the tuning 6 A E M H I S T O RY community because it allows users to keep a full cold air system installed without worrying about hydro-locking the engine if the filter became submerged in water. By the end of 2001, AEM earned U.S. patents for its adjustable fuel pressure regulator design and air bypass valve. Briefly described, Drifting is maintaining a slide at a high rate of speed and transitioning through a course while maintaining the slide, clipping apexes along the way. Competition is done in tandem, often with competitors sliding through the course about a foot away from one another. Drifting is judged on technical merits such as approach angle and entry speed, and subjective merits such as style and crowd response. Since its formal introduction in the U.S. in 2001, it has taken the industry by storm. In addition to our drag racing, road racing, rallying, off road and land-speed sponsorships, AEM Racing’s in-house Drift team provides us with an opportunity to test our products in one of the harshest Motorsports environments. These high-horsepower, high-boost racecars live in the upper RPM range and are tossed violently into turns and transitions that would yank out the underpinnings of normal cars. Legendary SpoCom drag racer Stephan Papadakis pilots the Drift S2000 and is AEM Racing’s Crew Chief, overseeing development of both Drift cars and all team logistics. The 2005 FormulaD Drift Series Co-Rookie of the Year has had a great season, qualifying in three of the five events entered to date, while also managing team operations and developing the Drift 350Z that is driven by Tanner Foust. AEM Racing driver Tanner Foust has had a banner year to date, and at the time of this writing is 3rd overall in the FormulaD Drift Series (80 points out of first) and is second overall in FormulaD’s Triple Crown Series (13 points out of first). In addition to the features found in our Plug & Play EMS, AEM’s Universal EMS also includes 10 independent, built-in peak & hold injector driver channels, direct drive ignition and dual wideband UEGO controllers. AEM’s Serial Gauge plugs into the company’s Programmable EMS and has the ability to read 19 channels simultaneously to provide reference for all outputs, including boost, AFR, EGT, H2O, IAT, knock, volts, RPM, vehicle speed, and more! Since it can read all channels at once, AEM’s Serial Gauge eliminates the need to buy a cluster of gauges, or you can link multiple Serial Gauges together to monitor additional channels or to divide your readouts across a few gauges. The Serial Gauge includes a user-selectable LED display allowing users to set vehicle specific limits, warnings, display ranges and operating ranges. This unit runs the standard EMS datastream by default, and includes 12 preset channels and seven user-selectable channels that are custom-configurable through the PC interface, allowing you to monitor practically anything attached to a sensor. AEM’s Serial Gauge includes user-programmable MIN/MAX storage for EVERY channel and records MIN/MAX values even if you are not using the function—if it’s in the stream the gauge records it. Red, yellow and green LEDs and the center threedigit display are fully user-programmable, making this a truly custom configurable unit. Users can set alarms for each channel so that when the signal exceeds a value the Gauge Part No. 30-4300 notifies you by flashing all LEDs and switching to the channel where that triggered the alarm. Userselectable qualifiers eliminate false warning lights, and the unit includes two outputs to trigger ancillary warning lights based on user selectable conditions. The Serial Gauge also includes user-selectable alarm priority in the event multiple alarms sound, allowing you to set alarm readouts in your order of priority. AEM Racing does this by utilizing the unit’s 5v output signal for feedback control to the AEM EMS, although AEM’s UEGO sensor controllers work with almost any stand-alone engine management system. The Twin-Fire is available in four- and eight-channel configurations, works with O.E.M. coil-on-plug and distributed spark systems, and is ideal for applications that utilize aftermarket stand-alone engine management systems. AEM’s FIC is the perfect solution for eliminating outdated FMU’s and “boost hiding” electronics and is ideal for newer cars with knock detection that have non-factory forced induction systems. The FIC is PC programmable and allows users to retard timing and add fuel to virtually any engine, even on variable cam timing engines (VTEC, iVTEC, VVTi, MiVEC, etc.). Since the FIC modifies the factory timing patterns it is not necessary to know them in advance. The FIC can also recalibrate sensors so users can add a MAP sensor for boost without affecting the signal to the ECU. The FIC uses a vehicle’s factory base map to create calibrations, so drivability and cold start are not affected. Since it is a trim device it will not affect the factory ECU and does not throw a “check engine” light because it allows the user to intercept the cam and crank inputs and modify them. Additional injector drivers allow users to control up to six additional injectors for high-horsepower vehicles. Our Twin Fire ignition module is the only capacitive discharge ignition system available with independently-firing dual capacitors, enabling it to produce more spark energy and voltage per spark than any other available capacitive discharge ignition.
