Greetings Gator Families,
As we near the end of quarter 1, we can reflect on having
already accomplished many great things this year.
The
classrooms are a buzz with a greater integration of technology
and cooperative learning happening as a part of the daily routine.
Our Pro-Gator, Renaissance program has already recognized well
over 100 students. Homecoming was a week filled with dress-up days, class competitions, a win at
the football game, and culminated with the dance on Saturday evening. The month of October will
include retake testing opportunities for students to satisfy the Reading FCAT 2.0 requirement for
earning a Florida high school diploma.
I want to share a few reminders about opportunities for students while at school. Research
shows the best start to one’s day includes a nutritional meal. Each morning our cafeteria serves a hot
breakfast, free to all students. Encourage your child to take advantage of this when they arrive to
school in the morning. After school, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:45 – 4:45, we offer tutoring
in the Media Center to all students. These are two excellent opportunities for students to enhance
their success in school.
Our Fall sports teams are posting win after win. The athletes and coaches are working hard and
we are having a great time cheering them on. We are fortunate to have Katherine Godina new to our
volleyball program this year as head coach. Her experience and coaching technique have our team
on the way to a record setting season.
I encourage you to become more involved with the school by joining us for School Advisory Council
Meetings, Athletic Booster Club Meetings, student competitions, athletic events, and performances.

YOUTH ALIVE! Is a faith-based, student led, group of students
that meet at school. Ms. Meyer and Mr. Sunnarborg are the sponsers. Students get together to share everyday issues or concerns. It’s a great
way to make new and caring friends. We also have Youth Pastors from
local churches come to speak. Our aim is to empower every student
to live the best life possible at high school. Always yummy snacks and

devices) or the App Store (for Apple devices) to download
the application. This app will allow you to receive real-time

Lockers
Students may rent a hallway locker
and lock for a non-refundable fee of
$5.00 in the Student Services Office.
Physical Education lockers and locks are
available for $3.00. Students interested
in purchasing a P.E. locker should contact
their P.E. teacher. Lockers are subject to
be searched by an administrator or K9
unit at any time.

Athletics
Island Coast Athletics has a new program this year called
“The Gator Crazies”. The Gator Crazies is a new student
support group for ICHS athletics. We have dropped our price
to $35. This will get you a special T-shirt that will get you into
reserved seating at any regular season home athletic event all
year. Social events during the season and recognition as the
“Spirit of Island Coast”
Mark your calendars. The first two dates for the FHSAA
state football playoffs are 11/141 and 11/21.

Alumni News
History was made this year as Aaron Lynch became the
first ever Island Coast Gator to play in the NFL. Aaron is
currently a defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers.

The Lady Gator golfers are in the midst of an exciting
golf season!
We have three returning seniors this year: Denise Valdes,
Liexy Perez and Meghan Rivera. In addition, we have three new players: Seniors Jitia
Jones and Brittany Brown. Our new junior is Kyana Caballero.
Each week the golfers are showing exciting new progress
and lowering their scores.
The team has three more matches (September 23rd, 30th
and October 2nd).
We will finish the season with the Lee County
Athletic Conference tournament and the District
tournament in Port Charlotte.

Free Breakfast For All Students Every Day Studies have proven that students who consume a nutritious breakfast are more
attentive and receptive to learning than those who do not eat breakfast before
starting the school day. The District has surveyed students and developed a new tasty
and nutritious breakfast menu that is free for every student, make sure your student
takes advantage. Food and Nutrition Services will continue to offer breakfast “free of
charge” to all students for the 2014-2015 school year.
Performing Arts
The performing arts department is already in the midst of preparation
for the first semester performances.
ICHS choirs, under the direction of
Mrs. Koller, have multiplied and more than 130 Gator voices are learning
beginning and advanced vocal techniques. The first choir concert on October
9th will impress its audience with music of hope and inspiration. The choirs
will also welcome young singers from Trafalgar Middle School as our special
guests on the stage for the evening. Don’t miss it the free concert
beginning at 7 pm!
The Gator Bands, led by Mr. Deeter, have already filled the football field and pep
rallies with their impressive music this year. The band has more than doubled in size
since you’ve last seen them and they are working hard to bring a fascinating rock
show to the field for your halftime entertainment. Watch for the new Gator dance
team that will travel with the band and bring their dancing charisma to the field.

Art Department
During September, our Creative Photography department will begin an
afterschool Photography Club. We have procured equipment for a small traditional
darkroom that will allow students to explore photographing with film cameras,
processing film, and making black-and-white enlargements.
Should any parents/guardians have working film cameras they would be willing to
donate, the Photography Club would greatly appreciate it!

Parents who let their children miss a lot of school are
setting these students up for failure. This is a strong statement,
but it’s true!
It’s a fact: students who go to school everyday and are on time
do better in school. You can help your child do well in school by
making this a habit in your home. Here are a few things you can do
to help your child get to school everyday and on time:
• Set the same time each night for bedtime and the same
time each morning for getting up.
• Make sure your child has his/her book bag, papers, and
clothes ready to go before they go to bed at night.
• Limit after school activities.
• Take time to read to and with your child everyday.
By doing these simple things everyday you can help your child
do better in school. Isn’t that what we all want for our children?
How to Help Your Child with Homework
Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind when you help
your child with homework:
• Do make sure your child really needs help before offering
it. Remember, homework is for your child.
• Do help your child see the purpose of homework. Its
practice and it teaches him to be responsible and how to
manage time.
• Do mark due dates on the family calendar. This helps your
child plan ahead and budget his time.
• Don’t try to help if you are confused or don’t know
what is expected.
• Don’t assume your child has NO homework; check with
the school to learn the school or teacher homework policy.
• Don’t let out-of-school activities become more important
than homework. School comes first!
