Tessa is very well mannered in a home environment.....she is very clean, well behaved, and mindful of her owner. She doesn't chew or get into things. Tessa is a Chow Chow mix. She exhibits typical Chow behavior in the sense that she bonds very strongly with her people......to the point that she doesn’t allow other dogs or animals around that person. She would thrive as an only dog where her people lavish all the attention on to her. She would also do best in a home with no children and where children visit infrequently. Have Snow All Year Long! So you don’t look forward to losing all of the beautiful white stuff on the ground come spring? Iowa County Humane Society —————————— 3207 Bennett Rd. Mitzy had a very loving home, but unfortunately her owner became ill and could no longer care for her. So, although Mitzy is in very good hands, she misses having her human companion to love and has become quite sad. Mitzy is an 8 year old female domestic short hair. Because her previous owner was an elderly person, and being the quiet kitty that she is, Mitzy requests an adult only household. She wants to have you all to herself—so she also asks that she be the only pet in the household. Her only other pre-requisite is her adopter have a great lap! o d A d e t p Spring Still in His Step Kato has been an ICHS canine guests since 12/22/04 —but he’s not complaining, he knows there’s a home out there for him. Kato is a male Border Collie mix. He may be small in stature, but he is all brain! He has figured out how to get out of his kennel on his own. He’s just anxious to get to the best part of his day —walking with the volunteers! Kato is a very friendly and affectionate guy and loves to go for walks, but he does need a home with no cats. Well, keep that cottony white look all year long with a big snowball of love curled up on your lap. Cotton is an all white, spayed, short haired female. She is a young adult, so she is out of the kitten stage and is very quiet. She enjoys just lounging around and being petted. She used to curl up with another of her all white buddies, but since he got adopted she’s looking for her home. I wanted an orange cat and I wanted to name him Cheddar. I had to ask my parents a few times before they said yes. Seymore Cutty Animals are such agreeable friends they ask no questions, they pass no criticisims. - George Eliot Cheddar asks to help save the ICHS money by receiving the ICHS newsletter electronically! Just remember to add [email protected] to your Email Address book. Thank you! I got my cat the day before my birthday, and I was excited. My dad found him at the Iowa County Humane Society near where he works. When we picked him up, he was nervous in the car and he made a weird meow. When we got home, we had to put our cocker spaniel, Riley, in the laundry room. The first time Cheddar met Riley, the cat hissed and the dog barked like mad. It only took two days before they got used to each other. Riley and Cheddar hangin’ out I thought Cheddar would be calm, but I was pretty wrong – he’s really frisky! He likes to attack Riley. Cheddar stalks him like a tiger and then pounces. Now, as I’m typing this, he’s lying down on a chair next to me. A couple weeks ago, my Aunt and Uncle brought their dog over. Even though Cheddar isn’t afraid of dogs, he was still hiding for a little bit. Now my cat and dog are friends. I think it was good that I got a cat, and you probably would, too. The End Gunnar & Cheddar (hanging out in the sink, one of his favorite perches) By Gunnar Morkri (Age 10) Silent Auction a Success Hadie Charlie Kaylee The Annual “Fun” Raising Benefit Auction was held on Sunday, November 13th. This is a Silent Auction containing baskets of goods—ranging from an iPod to wine to an oil change. The day was a great success! An Act of Kindness The fourth grade students at IowaGrant Elementary School made 200 dog biscuits for the shelter. They also donated money and various pet supplies. This act of kindness toward their four-legged friends was in place of the traditional classroom gift exchange. Cheri—ICHS Executive Director—also had the opportunity to speak with the students. My name is Billy (I look like a really tall beagle). I had been at the ICHS for the past year waiting and hoping for a family. About once a month over the past year, a couple from Barneveld (Bobby and Laurie) have been coming to help Bonnie (one of my favorite ICHS employees) walk dogs on Saturday afternoons. Kenya Bobby has always had a special bond with me, and I had hopes that someday he would take me home. However, I heard that they already had 5 dogs and 3 cats, so I was sad thinking there would not be room for me. Dalyla “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul has remained unawakened.” -Anatole France In December, Bobby and Laurie mourned the passing of one of their pack. Not sure if they were ready for another friend, they had me for a sleep over and I never went back. Life here is fun and there is always something going on. I have my own kennel, go for lots of walks, and have my own space on both the couch and the bed. I like the cats, and I want to play with them, but they don’t want to play with me!! I’m very happy to have my new home and hope some of my friends that I left at the ICHS—like Charlie—will find new homes soon. -Billy Boy ICHS could use a chest freezer in good working condition. Please call the ICHS at (608)935-1381 if you have one available to donate. We would also need help in hauling the freezer to the ICHS premises. Thank you! Get to know your new ICHS Executive Director…. Cheri Phillmore Daisy As the new Executive Director at ICHS, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Cheri Phillmore and I am very excited to be a member of the ICHS team. I live with my very senior Greyhound mix “Jazz” and my 4 year old Whippet “Oliver”. I have had a lifelong love affair with animals starting with dogs and cats and progressing to horses. I was the kid in the family who brought every stray, hurt and lonesome animal home and played nurse to them. After high school I completed the Veterinary Technician program at MATC, as well as obtaining my state Vet Tech license. I worked as a vet tech for several years before moving to California. While living in the Central Valley area, I spent six years as a Senior Animal Control Officer for a countyrun animal shelter. I found that, even through the most heart wrenching of situations, this was the job that gave me the most satisfaction. I returned back home to Wisconsin where I worked for several bio-tech companies in management positions but found that my heart kept returning to the animals. Pierre Fritz I am a firm believer in the no-kill philosophy, as I believe that the solution to pet over-population is through education, spay/neuter assistance programs and being advocates for a better way rather than just destroying the lives of unwanted pets. When I found out that the ICHS was looking for a new Director, I decided to send in my resume and keep my fingers crossed. I am certainly glad that the Board of Directors has given me the chance to be a part of such a great organization. We have a super team of staff and volunteers who truly love the animals entrusted to our care. We also have some exciting ideas for new programs that will help our organization continue to be an important part of helping better the lives of Iowa County animals. I look forward to meeting everyone and welcome ideas on how we can help make sure that there are no more homeless, abused animals in our communities. -Cheri Cats don’t like change without their consent. - Roger A. Pets of Iowa County & Neighboring Communities 2007 Calendar Your pet has what it takes to be a calendar star! This is a great opportunity to enter your pet in a calendar contest and also help the Iowa County Humane Society. Send us a silly, serious, or sensitive photo of your pet to be judged by area supporters of the ICHS. It is our goal to include as many entered photos as possible. Your pet does NOT have to be a former ICHS resident—all pets are eligible! Pets can be any shape or size: dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, ferrets, guinea pigs, rats, horses, or gerbils. Entry Guidelines: 1. Only amateur photos of companion animals will be judged. (Professional photos cannot be used) Say “Cheese” Keep taking pictures of your pets for the ICHS 2007 Calendar. Entries due May 1, 2006 2. 4X6 colored, gloss finish photos preferred, but we will also accept 3x5 or 5x7 photos. (Black and white photos and high quality digital camera images are OK. Please no Polaroid pictures.) 3. Clearly print your name, pet’s name, your phone number, and your address on the back of the photo. Please use a felt tip marker as a ball point pen causes dents in the photo. (A return address label works great!) 4. Photos with humans will not be included in the judging. 5. With each photo entered there is a $10.00 non-refundable fee. Make checks payable to “ICHS.” 6. All entries must be received by the ICHS by May 1, 2006. 7. The ICHS 2007 Calendar will be available in the fall of 2006! “Dogs remember faces, cats places.” - English Proverb Alex Charlet Oreo Zelda Dear Animal Lover and ICHS Supporter, Hello and Happy New Year, from the dogs and cats at ICHS! We want to remind you what great companions we ADULT dogs and cats can be for YOUR family. Puppies and kittens can be the cutest little things at the ICHS shelter, but adult pets like us have just as much love and companionship to give to YOU! Physical and mental maturity can be a big plus! Adopting an adult cat or dog is the perfect solution for families who are very busy and cannot devote the full-time attention that young pets need. We adults are much easier to housebreak, and many of us are housebroken already. Just imagine… no newspapers in the kitchen, no chewing your carpet, molding, or shoes – and still a happy face or wagging tail to greet you when you come home. We want to assure that you CAN ‘teach an old dog new tricks.’ Adults can learn to fit into your household faster than a young puppy or kitten. Obedience class is an excellent place for you and your new dog to learn to understand each other. And the most important reason to adopt an adult pet is that you’ll be saving a life! We’ll take as much love as you have to give us, and return it right back – Promise! Yours truly, The Dogs and Cats at ICHS P.S. Stop in for a visit some time!!
