That doesn’t mean we won’t get a few April showers to complete the Winter soaking! The new Indian restaurant is now open. I look forward to trying it myself. Budgens has promised me next month news on their plans as a company and specifically in Hawkhurst. → Mike Appelbe Chairman Hawkhurst Parish Council is intending to make progress this year in the future definition of Village Halls or Community centre. We are very much aware that this subject has become very drawn out over many years without any substantial progress being evident. The Parish Council operates 2 facilities at Copt Hall in Copt Hall Avenue and the Sports Pavilion at the King George V playing ground at the Moor. Both of these are in poor condition and have received no serious maintenance or renovation for several years. The Copt Hall is very heavily used by local groups. The booking system is always quite full, which clearly demonstrates the need for a better facility in the village. The sports pavilion is used for football changing rooms and also for youth meetings. Although the changing rooms are adequate compared with other playing fields, the overall accommodation is very poor for general use as a village hall. Ownership of the Halls is a complicated subject. The Copt Hall is actually owned by a charity “Hawkhurst Community Trust”, the sole trustee of which is the Parish Council, who actually manages the hall. The Sports pavilion is owned by “Fields in Trust”, which is a national charity formally known as the National Playing Fields Association. This was founded by King George V back in 1925 and owns more than 2000 playing fields across the country. The playing field and the sports pavilion are managed by the Parish Council, but does not own them. Although the sports pavilion can be renovated or rebuilt, it has to provide sports facilities. You are probably aware that there has been a planning permission for a large 2 storey Community Centre on the site of the Sports pavilion at the Moor. This was approved in 2009, and extended in 2012. This planning permission expires this month and cannot be extended further. We would need to submit a new planning application. The Parish Council is funded by the precept it receives from the Council Tax and also has income it receives from, for example, use of the halls. It is not able to embark on independent fund raising. This is the reason why there was no progress towards raising the approximately £2M funds to build the Community Centre, and accordingly was not able to make any progress towards its development. Hawkhurst Village Magazine May 2015 Issue No.49 3 → The Parish Council is determined to find out what sort of facilities are required for the village. You are aware that we are going through the process of generating a Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) this year, and the provision of Village Halls or a Community Centre is a significant part of this. Towards finding out present feelings on this subject, we held a public fact-finding session on 16th February in Copt Hall. Although about 50 people attended, I was rather disappointed by the attendance. The notes from this meeting are public and have been uploaded to the Parish Council Website. The outcome of this meeting will be used in the NDP. There will be another opportunity to provide your opinions on the requirements for Village Halls or Community Centre in the 3 day public event starting on 26th May, as part of the NDP process. The first draft of the NDP will be available this summer, which will be our first sight of expectations for Village Halls. Please support the NDP and make sure your opinions are considered. The Parish Council will be making decisions based on the outcome of the NDP. In parallel with the NDP process this year, the Parish Council is setting up a new charity to manage a Village Hall or Community Centre within Hawkhurst. This will have trustees independent from the Parish Council, and accordingly will be able to embark on fund raising, to be able to develop a new facility as should become apparent through the NDP process. I have tried to outline the progress we are intent on making during the next few months, which I hope will be of long term benefit to the Village. Peter Dartnell, Chairman, Hawkhurst Parish Council → Dear friends So here we are in the Season of Easter. During the Easter Season as usual we will consider the post-resurrection experiences of Jesus and we will consider Jesus as the Good Shepherd. It is such a, “turn left NOW!” intrusion, that some traditions actually call the Sunday remembering Jesus as the Shepherd as Good Shepherd Sunday”. I wonder what the Good Shepherd could possibly have to do with the Resurrection? 4 Hawkhurst Village Magazine I begin by musing on the after-tomb experiences the disciples had with Jesus. How he appeared mysteriously and almost magically in locked rooms, on the road, on the beach; always encountering the disciples. I wonder if you were Jesus, would you really have wanted to go back and hang out with the people who had betrayed, denied and deserted you as a crucified criminal. People who, apart for the women, left you for dead! We are not sure that being with one’s fickle followers would have made our “after the bucket” list. But, that is just us musing of course. I am sure more forgiving people would do as Jesus did. Parents probably. Don’t you just love how as parents we never quit on our children no matter what they do to us? We may make a list that could include other forgivers like teachers, social workers, nurses, firemen? Lawyers? Shepherds? Ah! At last I understood why Shepherd Sunday falls right in the middle of the Easter season! If Jesus wasn’t the Good Shepherd he wouldn’t have hung around to heal, reconcile and commission a community of failures into an ecclesia. He would have headed straight for heaven like so many of his followers these days seem hell bent on doing, if you know what I mean? Not the Good Shepherd though, the Good Shepherd who has “the power to lay down his life and the power to take it up again” picks up loving and caring, cajoling and commissioning just where he left off before they strung him up and left him for dead. Jesus the Good Shepherd won’t go home to rest until he knows all the flock have entered into their rest. A shepherd, who even when he is dead tired or just plain dead, gets up and continues seeking and calling until the sheep are all home. To make this even more profound, our Good Shepherd has more than one flock. He said so. He also said that his work wasn’t done until he had also brought them in. All the flocks. A blessed Eastertide to you. Fr. Thank you for your support. Bees don’t have a voice Remember the toxic pesticides that wipe out bees? An influential group of scientists has just concluded that they don’t just kill bees - they wreak “havoc” with other insects and plants in the countryside too. Campaigners across Europe managed to get these pesticides banned in the EU. But the ban could be lifted in December. By the time you read this the election will be over and any promises made by the next government in any further protection of our bees will need to be judged. Bees pollinate apples, cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, cauliflowers, onions, cabbages, broccoli, carrots and many, many more of our fruit and veg. Without bees, we wouldn’t last very long! We are lucky that some of our Council allotment holders keep bees which all the other growers then benefit from. By LOOKING at a series of remarkable paintings by Dinah Roe Kendall (who now lives in retirement in Folkestone), and entering these pictures; by READING the Biblical stories of the journeys and encounters of characters from Abraham through to Jesus; by WAITING on the Holy Spirit to speak through the bible text and picture; by LISTENING in prayerful anticipation and by RESPONDING in our Christian calling to the Spirit’s prompting, we will be nourished to continue our journeys of faith. To support us further on our journey, Food for the Journey, the Lent course which we followed, the Novena Team have also prepared a series of short DAILY WAITING services and reflections on the same pictures and stories. This will take place at St Laurence Church daily starting Friday 15th to Saturday 23rd May. Please see the St Laurence Church Calendar in the magazine for details. Everyone is welcome to attend. Summer’s just around the corner, country gardens are bursting into colour and Hospice in the Weald Open Gardens is here once again to help you find some of the most delightful in our region. Sadly there are no gardens in Hawkhurst as part of the scheme this year. Our Open Gardens scheme raised just over £11,000 for the hospice last year and, with some exciting additions for 2015, lots more visitors are likely to fancy a stroll around gardens of all shapes and sizes - small ones to inspire creativity, larger areas to explore, gardens for wildlife enthusiasts and interesting ideas for fruit and vegetable plots. And in several villages, neighbours are opening a chain of gardens so that visitors can wander from one to another. To request a brochure please contact Pam Coleman on 01892 820502 or email [email protected] or please visitwww.hospiceintheweald.org.uk where you can view each individual garden. Hawkhurst Village Magazine May 2015 Issue No.49 9 Our school newspaper, The Hawkhurst Times, has been published in time for Easter. The editorial team is composed of pupils in Key Stage 2 under the guidance and direction of Mr Stuart Fifield who is teaching in Year 4. This edition of the newspaper includes much information about school life this term. I hope you enjoy reading the extracts that have been published here in this magazine. E. This is a game in which large round flat stones are slid across a smooth surface towards a target. In curling, this surface is of course ice. The school’s first ever team won their first competition! Hockey and netball are now being played and we hope to see more teams being successful. There are many strong swimmers in the school and Year 4 and Year 5 are now having weekly swimming lessons. A story of Ancient Greece Hawkhurst Village Magazine → In the empty world there were four gods and one day Zeus told the two brother Epimetheus and Prometheus to create some kind and gentle creatures. Epimetheus created the raccoon with black and white grey stripes. “It is beautiful,” he said and then he made the monkey and the panda and all the lovely, kind, nice animals he could think of. But his brother was watching over him and he thought “I am better and cleverer than him,” and he made the last of every animal, mankind. Then Prometheus didn’t know what to give to mankind. But Epimetheus said, “What about giving man a tail or fur?” But his brother said, “That’s where you’re wrong because we’ve run out of fur also tails.” But then he had an idea and he secretly said to himself, “I know, I will give him the gift of the fire element.” So he went to heaven and got a piece of the sun. “I will just get a little bit of fire.” So he put the small bit of fire inside a small heap of grass but the secret was not held for long. Then, when Zeus was on Mount Olympus, he saw a piece of yellow, orange and red flaming fire under a great big column of smoke. TEDDY H (Y3) Hawkhurst Tennis Club is launching a new Junior Coaching Scheme Let’s play tennis...... Did you know that there has been a tennis club in Hawkhurst since 1881? Over time it has evolved into a friendly club of around 170 members, a quarter of whom are juniors. The club features 3 floodlit courts and a clubhouse with views across the weald. There are opportunities for all ages and standards to play at the club with senior and junior coaching, May 2015 Issue No.49 11 Please be aware these cameras are state of the art, once they have locked onto a speeding vehicle there is no argument as they take photographic evidence which is accepted by courts. If you are caught by these Camera Vans it is going to result in much more than a warning letter. Please Take Care! Hopefully the potential for points and a fine will be a reminder to all of the need to slow down and obey the speed limits. → regular fun tournaments, league matches and social play, to all of which new members are warmly welcomed. This spring Hawkhurst tennis club is launching a new, subsidised coaching scheme to encourage children to learn to play tennis. This coaching will be held on Friday afternoons, during term time, from 3.30pm until 7pm, starting on Friday 1st May. The cost per session will be just £1 and is open to all our junior members - membership costs from just £25 per year! We want to encourage young people to learn how to play tennis and enjoy being a member of a club. The coaching will be run by SPIN4SERVE, a highly qualified coaching team, which will introduce children to a new sport and encourage their progress by providing fun lessons and activities. For more information please visit our website hawkhursttennisclub.co.uk or simply come along on Fridays and meet the coaches at the club. TENNIS COACHING FOR JUST £1! Nicki Allen, Captain, United Lawn Tennis Club - Hawkhurst The other news is that the problem of rural speeding – not just a Hawkhurst problem – is also getting serious attention from a higher level. Whilst there are Speedwatch groups in many villages across Kent, (Cranbrook, Sissinghurst, Sandhurst and Benenden to name just a few), there is now a newly formed Rural Speeding Working Group which has been set up. This follows the February meeting hosted By Commissioner Mrs Anne Barnes and orchestrated by KCC Councillor Sean Holden. Chief Inspector Dave Paté, of Kent Police, and Maidstone MP, Helen Grant, are jointly chairing the group which is made up of Police, KCC staff, Local Parish Councillors, including our own Parish Chairman Peter Dartnell, along with Speedwatch volunteers. Whilst in its infancy this group will be working to try to find solutions to rural speeding across the county and hopefully the results will help to reduce speeding, and therefore accidents, as a whole. Information on progress will follow as and when available. We are delighted to welcome a new member to the Speedwatch team and if anyone else could spare a few hours from time to time they would be made most welcome, so do please contact the Parish Magazine (752367) for further details. Hawkhurst Community Speedwatch Team → Speeding Offenders Update After all the hard work of the last, nearly, 2 years The Hawkhurst Community Speedwatch Group is delighted to be able to announce that at last something concrete and positive is happening; as Hawkhurst is now on the rota for regular visits from the Mobile Speed Camera Vans! These fantastic vehicles are brimming full of clever 21st century technology which will bring enforcement to the roads into and out of Hawkhurst. 12 Hawkhurst Village Magazine May 2015 Issue No.49 →Marlborough House School Red Nose Day in March seen raising money for Comic Relief. The school raised over £1,000 with cake sales, face painting. The children and staff each paid £1 to wear as much red as possible. So what kind of things do we do? There are Men’s Breakfasts at the Royal Oak, and coffee mornings held at local venues such as the Sandhurst tearooms, the Etchingham Station bistro, the Orchard Farm Shop and the Lime Tree tea-room in Burwash. If pub lunches are your thing, delicious two-course lunches are held monthly at pubs such as the Cherry Tree in Ticehurst, the Black Pig, the Oak and Ivy and the Royal Oak. Don’t we do a lot to support local businesses! We also have wonderful outings, usually by coach, to places as far flung as Portsmouth (to see the Mary Rose), Chichester (Weald & Downland Museum), RHS Garden Wisley – and some nearer home, for example Blue Badge guided walks around Tunbridge Wells, Tenterden and Rye. → Of course the U3A is about sharing one’s knowledge and learning new skills through our many Interest Groups – but it’s also about meeting people, spending time together and seeing life from a new perspective. This is where the many and varied social events that we organise really come into their own. Our website www.hawkhurstu3a.org.uk will tell you about our monthly meetings with great speakers, social events, fascinating outings and our many interest groups. He taught French and English at Marlborough House School and one of his many talents was in writing poetry. The photo taken in White Lodge garden shows him with his sister Imelda; Chris never married but he had a great affection for Freda Davenport-Jones who taught the piano at the school. Chris loved Freda’s garden at White Lodge. He presented this poem in dedication to Freda and her beautiful garden at White Lodge, it was illustrated by Chris’ sister Imelda. Many readers will remember Freda shown with her dogs (she was a faithful member of St Laurence Church). Some readers will also remember the garden and certainly the next door nursery garden which specialised in hellebores. Thank you to Christine Pardoe (who also worked at the school), for showing us this beautiful illustrated poem (shown on the next page) and for providing the memories in this article. 14 Hawkhurst Village Magazine May 2015 Issue No.49 Hawkhurst Village Magazine May 2015 Issue No.49 15 →Police The shocking news of the most recent robbery at Sandhurst has quickly spread, having had conversations with various members of this community. It would appear that the offenders have targeted vulnerable business people! Hawkhurst is, by far, a much larger village, with many more business people living locally. Pat was interviewed by Woman’s Hour, whilst in Canton, and she wrote an article for the New York Times. They visited family in Canada, Vienna and the Isle of Man. Pat and Leslie Clark-Wilson moved to Hawkhurst from Luton, Bedfordshire, in 2005, to be closer to their daughter, Jo. They both felt at home immediately and appreciated the warmth and friendliness of the local community. →PATRICIA BUIK CLARK-WILSON - TRIBUTE Patricia (known as Pat) was born in Hampstead, London in 1928 and was evacuated with her sister, Jean, to the Isle of Wight during the war. Pat later went to boarding school at St Denis, Edinburgh, which had been evacuated to Drumlanrig Castle, Dumfries. On completing her education there, Pat moved back to Hampstead and started an English course at University College London. She was distracted in her studies by Leslie Clark-Wilson, whom she met in their local church youth group. Leslie Clark-Wilson had been in the Palestine Police for 10 years and on returning to London, was studying medicine at Bart’s Medical School. They married on 29th July 1948. After qualifying as a doctor, Leslie and Pat moved to Luton, Bedfordshire. Leslie was a General Practitioner and Pat looked after their four children and became the phone sitter for incoming calls for the doctor. In her free time, Pat enjoyed writing poetry (many of which have been published in magazines), plays (Three Mad Monkeys, The Dorado and The Scythe and the Stone) and prose. She created, produced and acted in an amateur drama group called the Presbyn Players and established groups like the Debating Society. She was actively involved in arts scene of Luton and, in 1974, organised the Supa Luton Arts Festival. After Leslie’s retirement in 1975 Pat and Leslie travelled extensively, including travelling overland on local bus and trains to India and then on to see family in Australia. They went on a train from London Hawkhurst Village Magazine Stan Acland commented, “In 2005, there was a change in Oaklands Road when the Clark-Wilsons graced us with their presence. Number 2 became ‘Quirky’ and Leslie and Pat began to make their mark. They shared their lives and experiences and it was impossible to knock on the door or ring the bell without being invited in to a beverage and biscuits depending on the time of day. Conversation was never wanting as their hospitality was such that one found drawn into which ever subject happened to be in discussion when you entered but could quickly change at the drop of a hat”. Leslie and Pat thoroughly enjoyed their new lives in Hawkhurst and every weekend visited different places of interest and/or socialised with family and friends. Leslie was known to travel around the streets of Hawkhurst on his scooter wearing a beret, with his Scottish flag waving in the wind. In October 2010, Leslie died at the ripe age of 94. In the past four years she has provided a legacy, as she prepared three books of poems, called Out of Chaos, Dancing with Dodos and Familiar Ghosts. Familiar Ghosts was only published two weeks before her death on March 15th 2015 but Pat appreciated the feedback she received. Merryn Williams wrote a review for the London Grip: Pat Buik’s slim booklet is a celebration of friendship, dedicated to ‘past and present friends’, and is written from the country of old age, when so many of the people you valued are not around. The first, and one of the best poems, ‘Bring out your dead’, sets the tone: Who is clamouring to come out? Grandfather, mother, child next door? Who sits at the back of your throat? Judy, who won’t be here for Christmas? Is it the hooded child in the dream? Jeremy? Fair-haired Nicholas? Pat’s carer/companion for the past 15 months, Ruth Gordine commented, “Over the months I have seen her body diminish but, oh boy, the fire remained burning in her belly and her brain as razor sharp as ever”. I, Jo Clark-Wilson, their daughter, cannot express in words how much I miss both my parents, but take pleasure in the time and experiences I have been able to share with them over the past few years, especially since their move to Hawkhurst. I would like to thank the Hawkhurst community for making my parents so welcome and for those that have supported them, especially Pat, in the last couple of years. into conditions affecting babies and children.
